Did you know that each evening we experience THREE twilights? Each one with distinctive features and that during this period we respond in physiological ways. Similarly, our ancestors appeared to have taken advantage of these liminal periods of transition in ways that we might do well to remember. We finish the episode with a lovely passage from Tom Rolt's Narrow Boat and there is also some sad news from the moorings.   Journal entry:“1st July, Thursday The day dawns with a silver light that presages a beautiful July day. The hay in the meadow above us has been cut and baled.A heron breaks cover from the little cove umbrellaed with bushes. Around the corner glide the swans. The cob effortlessly swims, one cygnet tucked close to his side. There is a gentle dignity about him. His reflection casts a ghostly figure ‘5' in the barely stirred water. It is a message I had no heart to read." Episode InformationIn this episode I finish with a reading from LTC (Tom) Rolt's (1944) Narrow Boat first published by Eire and Spottiswoode. It is a book that has been viewed by many as saving the British waterways.I also read RL Stevenson's poem ‘Bed in Summer' published in his volume of children's verse, Child's Garden of Verse (1885). You can read the poem here: ‘Bed in Summer'.Extracts are also read from:A Roger Ekirch (2005) At Day's Close: A history of night time. Norton. Paul Bogard (ed.) Who gets to give names to specific celebratory months? Have you ever wondered? For example, April is National Humor Month, National Internship Awareness Month, Inventors’ Month, Jazz Appreciation Month, Cannabis Month, National Alcohol Month, and the list goes on and on. I would like to focus on April as National Financial Literacy Month. Why? Because Tax Day is just around the corner! It’s important to talk to young people about financial literacy. The most valuable thing that young people have on their side is TIME. Just putting away small amounts of money—and starting while you’re still young—will yield amazing results! Show Highlights: Money invested over the long-term will DOUBLE on average every 7 years Diversified mutual funds are best, and it’s essential to get a good financial advisor It doesn’t take a LOT of money—the important thing is to just GET STARTED Delaying by just a few years can make a difference of MILLIONS  Why? Because of the power of compound interest As an illustration, would you rather have $1 million right now OR a penny now that doubles every day for 30 days? At Day 20, you would have $5,242.88 At Day 24, you would have $83,886.08 At Day 26, you would have $335,554.32 At Day 27, you would have $671,088.64 At Day 28, you would have $1,342,177.28 At Day 30, you would have $5,368,709.12 If you invest $100/month from age 20 to age 34, and then no more, you would have invested $16,800, which would grow to $731,822.31 at age 65 If you invest $100/month from age 34 to age 65, you would have only $241,365.32 It’s essential to understand the numbers for financial literacy and get serious about saving money ASAP Find a good financial advisor who helps you invest in a solid portfolio of diversified funds and DON’T watch the market daily. Keep adding to it and watch it over time Albert Einstein said: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it, and he who doesn’t, pays it. Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.” Resources mentioned in the episode: Resources mentioned in the episode: "I'm Gonna Need Ice, with Matt" - https://youtu.be/Mnt-Oah8W6k  https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/221320/old-fashioned-cocktail/ Starting Young – The Miracle of Compound Interest https://www.earlytorise.com/starting-young-the-miracle-of-compound-interest/ If You Still Don’t Believe In The Power Of Compound Interest, You Have To See This https://www.moneyunder30.com/power-of-compound-interest Compound Interest Calculator https://www.investor.gov/additional-resources/free-financial-planning-tools/compound-interest-calculator

Nights are getting brighter and most of us no longer experience true darkness. Paul Bogard (James Madison University), author of The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in the Age of Artificial Light, says the lack of darkness at night is affecting our physical, mental, and spiritual health. And: Centuries ago, nighttime was a scary and dangerous time. A moonless evening could be filled with perils. In his book, At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past, historian Roger Ekirch (Virginia Tech) sheds light on how pre-Industrial Revolution farmers, tradesmen, and laborers spent their nights. Later in the show: When women compare themselves to other people, they actually lose IQ points. Read Montague (Virginia Tech) completed a study that suggests being in groups can temporarily lower our IQ. Plus: Classical guitar music was a constant in the Renaissance and Baroque eras of England, France, and Italy. Music professor and guitarist Tim Olbrych (The College of William and Mary) offers a brief history of this instrument and plays selections from his CD, 500 Years of the Spanish Guitar.
