Dr. Jay Calvert & Dr. Jason Berkley chat with former NHL coach, general manager, team president, and sportscaster Doug MacLean about his new book "Draft Day: How Hockey Teams Pick Winners Or Get Left Behind", releasing October 3rd! Pull up a chair and grab a cup of joe, Doug is telling stories - from how he acquired Kris Draper for $1, working for Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, Scotty Bowman's odd ways of motivating Stevie Y, the process of writing the book, his regret over the Kopitar draft, the Eric Lindros trade - the biggest draft trade ever, why the Sharks took Patrick Marleau over Olli Jokinen, the Sidney Crosby lottery, tanking, thoughts on the last two expansion drafts with Vegas & Seattle, and so much more!
Dan and Shawn are joined by Brady Tkachuk (16:04) and Matthew Tkachuk (40:30). Brady talks about his summer wedding, his excitement going into this season, the growth of his team and what he learned watching Matthew and the Panthers go on their run to the Stanley Cup Final last season. Matthew discussed the injury he sustained in the Stanley Cup Final and the pain he was in, the help he got from his brother in that time, but also Brady's bachelor party in Miami, and feeling a different vibe in the South Florida market after last season. Rosen and Roarke talked about the positive impact of the recently completed 2023 NHL Global Series -- Melbourne (2:00). They talked about the Senators and Panthers, and if the Tkachuk teams have what it takes to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season (9:00). They also gave opinions on Sidney Crosby's take that Connor McDavid could score 170 points in a season, and why that might not be a good thing for the Edmonton Oilers (32:00). And they offered some thoughts on the contract stalemate between the Anaheim Ducks and their two remaining restricted free agents, center Trevor Zegras and defenseman Jamie Drysdale (55:21).
Preseason NHL hockey brings about a ton of excitement and intrigue when it comes to the potential impact on your fantasy hockey team. With fantasy hockey drafts rapidly approaching, it's important as a fantasy hockey GM to know what is happening during the NHL preseason. The Pittsburgh Penguins seem to be ready to roll out both Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang on the top power-play unit alongside the likes of Sidney Crosby and others. Another interesting trend to watch is the batch of young talent the Calgary Flames are set to give a solid look, including Matt Coronato. Lastly, Flip and Steele take a look into what's been happening with the much-talked about Toronto Maple Leafs and their recent lineup shuffles due to a number of key pieces leaving during the offseason. Which is why Auston Matthews will be getting a serious look on the penalty-kill unit and William Nylander at the centre position. Thanks for making Locked On Fantasy Hockey your 1st listen, every day. We are free and available on all platforms and make sure to subscribe and follow us for the latest episodes every day! Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Training camp is finally here, which means Pat and Hunter have live hockey to react to. They first discuss some of the lines that stood out to them on Thursday, even though Mike Sullivan says to not read into them...too much! Hey, they read into the "duos" if you will. They especially look at Vinnie Hinostroza and how he was skating with Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust and if we could see that in a preseason game soon. They then look at how the defensive pairings seem to be playing out as expected, especially in the top four. After that, they get to the big news on Jake Guentzel as he's back on the ice. Pat and Hunter analyze what that means for the Penguins and how his absence will be shortlived after all the panic was out there during the offseason. Finally, they look at how the mood of the team is for camp and how everyone seems to have a massive chip on their shoulders after how last season ended. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
It's a mailbag Friday edition of the Locked On Penguins podcast as Hunter and Pat answer your questions! They first look at who will score more points between Erik Karlsson and Sidney Crosby this season before looking at whether Letang and Karlsson will be on the power play together. They also answer a question about who could be dealt at the deadline for help since the Penguins are up against the salary cap. They then discuss a possible Phil Kessel reunion and why it would be a lot of fun, but in terms of on-ice play, it's probably too late. They even take a question about the Penguins potentially selling at one point during a season with the big three before answering some fun questions, such as the best jersey in franchise history, plus which players post 1990-on would you want to have in the top six (Penguins-specific, which Hunter almost forgot). They even have a great conversation about Ryan Mill and how he's been amazing since taking over for John Barbero. All that, plus much more is on this special edition of the podcast. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Happy Wednesday! Hunter and Pat are back for another episode of the podcast as the two start out with whether Sidney Crosby will hit 100 points this season or not. They look at what he did this past season and how he stayed relatively healthy, though he finished with 93 points. How can he get 7 extra points for this season? The two look at how Erik Karlsson will be a big factor in getting him to 100 and how Jake Guentzel could also be a big factor if he's able to play at a higher level once he comes back from his injury. They also discuss his production on the PP and at 5v5, before moving on to which player in the bottom six will score the most goals this season. Hunter gives his answer (it's a newcomer) while Pat goes with someone a bit on the younger side. Finally, they end the show with some international hockey talk as Bill Daly and the league look set on firing up some best-on-best events for the first time in nearly a decade. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Welcome to a Fun Friday edition of the Locked On Penguins podcast as Pat and Hunter bring you the Multiverse Of Madness. They look at a few "What If" scenarios in Penguins' history and start with Sidney Crosby not getting a concussion during the 2010-11 season. They look at how much time he missed and how we were all robbed of "Prime Sidney Crosby." They discuss how many more points he would have right now if he didn't miss that time, plus if the Penguins would have had another Stanley Cup during the 2010s had he not missed all that time. After that, they shift gears to a "What If" for the Penguins-Rangers series in 2014 and how the Penguins blew that one. Had they won the series, would they have won the Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017? What about Dan Byslma and Ray Shero? Finally, they end the show with a big "What If" surrounding Mario Lemieux and what could've happened if he stayed healthy throughout his career. On today's Western Conference Tuesday edition of Locked on NHL, Seth Toupal and Nick Morgan start by discussing the Erik Karlsson trade. They try to determine which team got the better end of the deal, when in reality the Sharks got what they wanted by mostly getting out from under the contract, and the Penguins got another piece to help extend Sidney Crosby's playoff window for another couple of seasons. We move to the Matt Dumba signing and the chances the Arizona Coyotes could make the playoffs in 2023-24. Seth and Nick both like the moves the Coyotes have made, but also note their chances of the postseason are going to be small considering the number of teams they would have to leapfrog. We finish by ranking the top 10 goalies in the Western Conference! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! FanDuel Make Every Moment More. It's been quite the last 24 hours for the Pittsburgh Penguins with the Erik Karlsson deal. After doing an emergency show on Sunday, Pat and Hunter are back for a normal show on Monday as they continue to discuss the Erik Karlsson deal. They look at why the naysayers are looking at this deal all wrong considering that the Penguins have won three Stanley Cups during this era and how this trade sets the Penguins up to not be irrelevant sooner rather than later. They also look at what this deal means for the rest of the defense, specifically that No. 6 spot now that Jan Rutta is no longer with the team. Is Chad Ruhwedel the favorite for the job? What about Mark Friedman? After that, they look at what Kyle Dubas could have in store next. Is Tomas Tatar on the team's radar? Will they have the space for him? They also look at a couple of other options at forward while also discussing whether this was truly it for the offseason before ending the show by celebrating Sidney Crosby's 36th birthday. The Philadelphia Flyers are heading into the 2023-24 NHL Season with incredibly low expectations. After an unexpectedly busy offseason, the Flyers were able to sign a few really good low-key signings in Garnet Hathaway and Marc Staal, who can be very good locker room guys. They can also help take this franchise to the next level. On the injury side, Sean Couturier and Cam Atkinson will both hopefully be 100% for Training Camp, beginning September 21st. Gaining those two guys back will not only be huge for the morale but also the offense. Coots will be returning as one of the best two-way players in the game. So not only will he help the offense, he will play well on the defensive side and in the faceoff circle. GM Danny Briere also went out there and was able to sign a few important RFAs in Noah Cates, Cam York, and Ronnie Attard, who will play big parts in the future success of this team. With another year under John Tortorella, it wouldn't be too surprising to see this team take another step forward. Where will the Flyers finish in the Metro Division? In this segment, the New Jersey Devils will have their time. The Devils finished last season in second place in the Metro Division with a 52-22-8 record, which was good for 112 points. Not a super busy offseason for the Devils, but they were able to lock down their major acquisition from last year in Timo Meier. He signed on the dotted line of an eight-year contract with a cap hit of 8.8 million per year. They were also able to re-sign winger Jesper Bratt to an eight-year contract as well, worth 7.8 million a year. The Devils are a fairly young team overall, and because of that, they have assets that some teams would want. Well, the Calgary Flames were able to pull off a trade where they acquired Yegor Sharangovich with a pick for winger Tyler Toffoli. This deal has a lot of intrigue due to his good year in 2022-23 statistically, but he also has a ton of playoff experience as well as a Stanley Cup Championship. His leadership could be huge in that young locker room. Are the Devils the favorite to win the Metro? There are a lot of questions surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. One of those questions is, how long can they keep the playoff window open with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang? The Pens finished outside the playoffs looking in for the first time since 2005-2006. From the looks of their offseason, they will try to make another push at realistically a Wild-Card berth. Their biggest priority this offseason was getting goaltender Tristan Jarry to re-sign. The Pens were able to do that, agreeing to a five-year deal worth 5.3 million a year. They brought in some veteran talent in Matt Nieto and Lars Eller, signed as UFAs to two-year deals, and newly crowned Stanley Cup Champion Reilly Smith via trade before the draft. Head Coach Mike Sullivan could potentially find himself in the hot seat early on if this team gets off to a slow start. This Penguins team very well has the depth to compete for a playoff spot, but could the age of this team be problematic come the second half of the season?

The guests continue to roll in as we are now in the late stages of summer. Joining Wednesday's edition of the show is Matt Gajtka, formerly of DK Pittsburgh Sports, and they first discuss which Penguin players are under the most pressure heading into the season. They look at a player like Jeff Petry, who didn't perform up to expectations this season, along with Bryan Rust, before Matt brings up an obvious candidate in Sidney Crosby as he tries to defy time. They also look at Mike Sullivan and how he's under pressure to adjust before moving on to realistic expectations for Reilly Smith heading into this season. What sort of production should fans expect out of him? Is he going to get the team a few extra points due to his elite play on the PK? How different of a scorer is he, compared to Jason Zucker? The two jump into that before ending the show on a fun "What If?" note regarding what would've happened if the Penguins had drafted Patrice Bergeron in the 2003 NHL Draft? The two go into all kinds of scenarios, especially about future lotteries, before looking back at how great of a career Bergeron had. All that, plus much more, is on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! FanDuel Make Every Moment More. Happy Friday! Hunter is back with more Penguins content and starts the show by discussing some of the best goals of this past season. Where does Evgeni Malkin's goal against Darcy Kuemper rank? What about his goal against the Calgary Flames in the shootout after he had his 1,000th game against the Chicago Blackhawks recently? Hunter also discusses Sidney Crosby's brilliant goal against the Colorado Avalanche in late March while he was at the Steel Panther show. He showed off once again why he has the best backhand in all of hockey. He also analyzes Crosby's OT winner against the Columbus Blue Jackets late in the season when the Penguins came from four goals down, along with Jake Guentzel's OT winner against the Ducks when it looked like the team was about to lose. After that, Hunter looks at the latest updates on Erik Karlsson courtesy of Rob Rossi and gives his thoughts on the continued stalemate. Finally, Hunter discusses the NHL hopefully returning to the Olympics in 2026 and how it will be the final hurrah for Crosby and Malkin when it comes to winning gold medals. Friday's brand-new episode features a look across the NHL and fantasy hockey world to break down some of the smaller happenings that will still have fantasy hockey impacts on your squad and on the upcoming draft. Flip rides solo to discuss the PIttsburgh Penguins and the developing pursuit of Jan Jose Sharks Norris winner Erik Karlsson. According to reports, both Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang have given Kyle Dubas their blessing to add the perennial All-Star blue-liner. Speaking of Dubas, the Maple Leafs current goaltending situation seems to be a tipping point with goalie Ilya Samsonov and the club being far apart in arbitration requests. Friday's show also dives into the signing of Winnipeg forward Gab Vilardi and what his future could hold fantasy hockey-wise with more opportunities to succeed in the Jets' lineup as well as if Tony DeAngelo still holds fantasy hockey value following his buyout by the Philadelphia Flyers. Welcome to the dead zone! Hunter starts the show by discussing Ty Smith's contract and what it means for the Penguins this upcoming season. Is he going to be able to take a spot in the lineup every night? Is the battle against PO Joseph going to be that much more interesting? Hunter also looks at how the Penguins need to be careful with Smithy because he is no longer waivers exempt. He will now have to go through waivers in order to be sent down to WBS this upcoming season. He also dives into his numbers from this past season and analyzes what makes him stand out more than POJ and vice versa. After that, Hunter looks at how Sidney Crosby is looking at a couple of significant milestones this upcoming season. Hunter analyzes Sid's chances at getting into the NHL's all-time points leaders this season and how many points he needs, despite him about to be 36. He then looks at how he's approaching the 1,000-assist mark and how it's going to be a special night when he gets that milestone. Finally, he ends the show with a full list of games that should be must-watch/must-sees for fans this upcoming season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! FanDuel Make Every Moment More. Hunter wraps up the mailbag discussion during today's episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast and is joined by first-time guest Patrick Damp to also wrap up Season 4 of the show. They discuss questions regarding backup plans for the Penguins if they're not able to get Erik Karlsson, and that's where Hunter brings up Troy Terry, even though he's an RFA. He's exactly the type of player that Kyle Dubas would go after, even though he's not another defenseman. Hunter also takes questions regarding if this is still a playoff team if Karlsson doesn't get dealt to them, and even takes a question about a hypothetical Jake Guentzel for William Nylander swap. They also get into what their favorite Penguins games that they've attended, plus which is the best goal of the Sidney Crosby era to date before ending the show with some Tristan Jarry talk. NHL insider Sean Gentille from The Athletic joined the show. Sean guessed that Erik Karlsson will be on the Penguins roster by opening night. He wanted to reiterate that it was only a guess because that's where we are at this point. Sean speculated where the Sharks could be at right now viewing the potential offers for Karlsson. Sean said Karlsson would make the Pens “significantly” better and help the other older stars carry the load. Sean added that Sidney Crosby is still this team's best player even if Karlsson is acquired, but he can be a tremendous asset if Crosby would miss time.
