Dr. Brandy Cummings Dr. Brandy Cummings, DCN, is not your typical nutritionist—she's a former blackjack dealer who routinely chooses steak over quinoa, roasted veggies over kale chips, and, most importantly, she understands. Her passion for root cause-focused nutrition stems from her own struggles with illness, infertility, and feeling forgotten by conventional medicine. After overcoming severe mold exposure that triggered the loss of her first pregnancy as well as countless other debilitating symptoms, Dr. B explored every corner of improving cellular health; she researched overlooked causes of chronic illness, such as mold, parasites, reactivated viral infections, and a dysregulated nervous system and was alarmed at the lack of continuous care offered by the conventional model. Dr. Cummings holds an impressive list of qualifications, with her Doctorate of Clinical Nutrition from the University of Western States in Portland, OR. Most people take the light in their life for granted. People wear dark glasses to block light during the daytime and nothing on their eyes at night. This gives the retina in the eye the signal that night time when its really daytime and that its daytime when its really night time. This small example illustrates how disconnected humans have become with their environment and this circadian mismatch coincides with the rise in neolithic diseases. Dr Alexander Wunsch has been studying the science of photobiology for decades and joins us to share his thoughts on how we can improve our relationship with light, both natural and artificial. I ask him about incandescent versus LED lights, he explains why darker skinned people do not have more melanin, which types of skin cancer come from overexposure to sunlight, how to determine your tolerance to sunlight, his thoughts on photosensitizers, which wavelengths of light window panes block, his thoughts on sauna therapy, vitamin D, why he doesn't like narrowband UV light devices, why red light panels are not quasi-monochromatic and why he's concerned with them, and more.  Dr Alexander's lectures: https://vimeo.com/AlexanderWunsch My website: www.matt-blackburn.com Mitolife products: www.mitolife.co Music by Nicholas Jimenez: https://open.spotify.com/track/5uLO7Q8r8wwLRAtChMYKNs?si=X4rUrsHdQJqzSYYh7bURmw&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A10s9uTJOw0BQiQnk1Rz09e https://music.apple.com/us/album/crystal-water-etude/1778142441?i=1778142442

In 1552, a lexicographer gave us the word “noctivagation” which means walking around at night. The word itself was a legal term for Shakespeare's lifetime, used to describe someone that wandered around at night without any particular purpose. Vagrancy, on the whole, was frowned upon for Shakespeare's lifetime, but vagrancy at night was viewed with extreme suspicion. In fact, walking around at night illegitimately was so bad that in his play King Lear, Shakespeare implies that the poster boy for night walkers is Satan himself. This negative understanding of nightwalkers gets confusing though, when we consider Falstaff in Henry IV talks about walking from tavern to tavern at night with Bardolph, and mentions it as fun, certainly not anything they were worried about, and other period references from the 16th century talk about Link Boys, who were young boys paid to escort travelers as night while carrying a torch to light the way. What does this mean about travelling at night in a city like London? Were there legitimate reasons to be out after dark, and what options were available for creating artificial light prior to the advent of the light bulb? Here today to answer these questions and introduce us to the concept of night walkers, and night lights, for Shakespeare's lifetime is our guest, Matthew Beaumont.   Get bonus episodes on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In this episode we focus on disrupted sleep, the process of natural  melatonin and cortisol to support and regulate the sleep pattern and the wake pattern in correlation with the circadian rhythm. We talk about natural light vs artificial light to support people who are bed bound or light sensitive, meeting the person where they are with their chronic illness. Rachel and I discuss the benefits of introducing light during sunrise to release the natural cortisol triggering the healthy cortisol awakening response. Rachel explains how having mobile phones and wearing smart watches during the night causes sleep disruption, this is because they are all connected to the wifi and emit electromagnetic frequencies, these can destabilise electrons, she explains how if you have MCAS the electrons are already destabilised. We discuss the importance of food for energy and the cortisol levels and avoid low blood sugar levels which takes the body into "fight or flight". He'll explore the key components of sunlight - visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation - and unpack the numerous benefits they provide, from regulating our circadian rhythms and vitamin D production to improving cardiovascular health and boosting mood. Dr. Odell will also contrast the advantages of natural light with the drawbacks of artificial light, particularly the blue-light-heavy LEDs and fluorescent bulbs that have become ubiquitous in modern indoor environments. He'll discuss how this artificial light can disrupt our sleep-wake cycles, cause eye strain, and deprive us of the full-spectrum benefits we get from the sun. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the science-backed benefits of natural light, and the bioregulatory medicine perspective, which emphasizes the body's innate wisdom and our deep connection with the natural world - including the sun itself.

Dr. Allison Brager is an Army neuroscientist, CrossFit Games athlete, and sleep specialist. Her career bridges the gap between rigorous scientific research and high-level athletic performance.Dr. Brager is currently a GHOST fellow at the US Special Operations Command headquarters. Prior to that, she served as the Deputy Chief Science Officer at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, where she worked on evaluation and R&D projects focused on the assessment and selection courses for Special Forces, Civil Affairs, and Psy Ops. She has received two NIH National Research Service Awards and a National Academies of Sciences fellowship, which recognize her groundbreaking work on physiological resilience to extreme stress. Her PhD focus was around sleep science, and she now sits on fatigue management and neuroenhancement working groups through NATO, US Special Operations Command, the Office of the Army Surgeon General, and inter-government (DoD, NASA, FAA, NHTSA, NIH) collaborations. Allison's expertise in sleep, particularly under extreme conditions, and her unique ability to apply her scientific knowledge to enhance athletic performance make her a valuable asset to the military and the broader scientific community. She is also the author of Meathead: Unraveling the Athletic Brain, which explores the intersection of neuroscience and athleticism. As a final note, Allison squeezed in this call between a two-day human performance conference and a trip to NASA, and she works all day in a highly secure building where she can't do phone calls, so we had to do this call with her outside. Summary Have you ever wondered why you feel so groggy and tired after spending hours scrolling on your phone or laptop at night? The blue light emitted from our electronic devices and LED lights is disrupting our natural circadian rhythms, leading to sleep issues, increased disease risks, and other adverse health effects. This episode explores practical solutions to reduce blue light exposure and improve overall well-being. Listen now to this eye-opening conversation with The Light Doctor, Dr. Martin Moore-Ede and take the first step towards reclaiming your natural sleep-wake cycle and overall health. Takeaways LED lights emit blue light in the evening, which can disrupt our sleep, and immune system, and increase the risk of various health problems. Sunlight and outdoor exposure are crucial for our health, and spending time outside in the morning can have significant benefits. Blue blocking glasses can be effective in reducing the harmful effects of blue light, but it's important to choose glasses that block the right type of blue light. Daylight saving time and time zones can have negative effects on our health, and living on our natural sun cycle would be ideal. Simple solutions to mitigate the effects of artificial light include getting outside during the day, using zero-blue light bulbs at night, and avoiding exposure to blue light from screens. The problem is when this map of reality is not consistent with your goals, then you need to evaluate your beliefs and then start to change them subconsciously. ·       The inductive mind is the creative mind that imprints information into the subconscious mind and looks for coincidences with the idea. ·       The inductive mind is the creative mind, and the subconscious mind is the set goal. The reticular activating system is an area in our mind that opens up when we focus on something, allowing us to see things that were not there before. [22:29] The Impact of Food Consumption on Our Conscious and Subconscious Mind. ·       Social influences on food intake refer to the impact that one or more persons have on the eating behavior of others, either direct (buying food) or indirect (learning from peer's behavior), either conscious (transfer of beliefs) or subconscious. ·       Observation and food consumption elicit positive affective responses, stimulating food intake. It revealed that the observation and consumption of food activate brain regions related to affective processing. ·       When we have enough energy, conscious deliberation enables us to make good decisions. The unconscious, on the other hand, seems to operate fine with low energy. [28:35] Fix Your Circadian Rhythm to Lose Weight ·       A nucleus is an area in the brain behind the eyes responsible for telling the time. When the sun releases blue light, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters, such as melatonin, which is the one that leads to going to sleep. Melatonin is produced during the morning and used later at night. ·       Light produces endorphins in the eyes, which synchronize the system to get BC and do physical exercise. This is due to the rhythm in cortisol that starts to go up whenever you see the first hours of the morning and the light, which is why we don't use fasting glucose anymore as a valid test. ·       When exposed to sunlight, you produce the vitamin D necessary to gain muscle mass. However, if you avoid sunlight, for whatever reason, you are more inclined to lose muscle mass due to the missing part of vitamin D.  ·   Vitamin D is an antioxidant. If you consume a lot of ultra-processed carbohydrates, you are using your firehose with carbohydrates instead of getting this vitamin, getting the processes to lower other general inflammation.   [40:08] Natural Light vs Artificial Light; How This Influences Weight Loss ·       When people take sunshine, their anxiety goes down, but when they are anxious, they crave sweets and salty foods. ·       When they are sleep deprived, they start their day with higher-than-normal glucose levels, and if they exercise, they will have a glucose spike. Insulin can remove the excess glucose and put them back on the level where they start with cravings. ·       Any lifestyle promoting insulin resistance will worsen matters, and food stimuli are only four to 5% of the brain's ability to change eating patterns. To move forward, starting with the water flow and sleeping at the correct time is important. ·       Light significantly influences our eating patterns and behavior, with 46% of neurons in our brain being stimulated by light. ·       The brain is programmed to adapt to longer days during the summertime and shorter days during the wintertime, which means that we need to prepare ourselves and accumulate energy in terms of fat being brought to our system. In this journal club episode, my guest is Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., a Stanford and Johns Hopkins-trained physician focusing on healthspan and lifespan and the host of The Drive podcast. We each present a peer-reviewed scientific paper chosen because it contains novel, interesting, and actionable data. First, we discuss a paper on how bright light exposure at sunrise and throughout the day and dark exposure at night independently improve mental health and can offset some of the major symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Then, we discuss an article that explores a novel class of immunotherapy treatments to combat cancer. We also discuss some of the new data on low-calorie sweeteners and if they are safe. This episode should be of interest to listeners curious about maximizing their vitality and longevity and to anyone seeking science-supported ways to improve mental health and lifespan. Today, I am blessed to have here with me James Swanwick. He is an Australian-American entrepreneur who helps casual drinkers reduce or quit alcohol. He is also an investor, speaker, journalist, and former ESPN SportsCenter anchor and Hollywood correspondent.  He has coached thousands of people to improve their lives and performance by adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle. He is the author of The 30-Day No-Alcohol Challenge: Your Simple Guide to Easily Reduce or Quit Alcohol and the creator of Project 90, an online program providing support and coaching for individuals eliminating alcohol from their lives. He is also the host of the Alcohol-Free Lifestyle Podcast, launched in June 2020, with 22 episodes currently featured on iTunes and Spotify. And the James Swanwick Show, with 330 episodes and 2 million downloads. A sleep evangelist, James is the co-founder (with his brother Tristan Swanwick) of the popular health brand Swanwick Sleep, which produces blue light-blocking glasses to improve well-being and sleep quality. The company has sold more than 150,000 pairs of its “Swannies” glasses, which are worn by pro-athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. The product has been featured on the Kelly Ripa Show, the Today Show, and in Forbes and are recommended by some of America's top sleep doctors. In his early career as a journalist, Swanwick was a reporter for Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd, reporting on worldwide news, politics, business, and entertainment for newspapers, including The Courier-Mail and News of the World. His journalistic work has been featured in media, including the New York Times, Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph, The Sun, and The Courier-Mail. From 2010 to 2012, James was an ESPN SportsCenter anchor. Prior to that, he spent eight years working as a Hollywood correspondent, interviewing celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and world leaders, including former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. In 2015, Forbes Magazine included James in its 25 Professional Networking Experts To Watch. In this episode, James dives into why he decided to stop drinking alcohol. He speaks about all the health benefits he experienced when he quit drinking and how it has changed his life forever. James talks about navigating peer pressure when it comes to alcohol consumption and how easy it can be to live a life without alcohol. Plus, James gives all sorts of tips and tricks on getting a better night's sleep. Tune in as we chat about the importance of gratitude, why you should ditch artificial light at night, and the reasons you need light-blocking glasses for both day and nighttime wear.  Get Swanwick Sleep glasses and products here: https://www.bn10strk.com/B26MC9C8S/55M6S/?uid=255 use the coupon code ketokamp for a nice discount on your entire order!  Join Ben Azadi's 90 day heavy metal detox program (9 spots available): https://ketokamp.clickfunnels.com/order-page-a  Reserve your FREE spot to our upcoming 5 day Keto Kickstart Challenge with Dr Eric Berg, Cynthia Thurlow, Ben Azadi & The Keto Kamp Team: https://www.ketokamp.com/keto-challenge  Message me on Instagram www.instagram.com/thebenazadi with the word ENERGY to learn more about coaching from me. / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. [00:55] How James Swanwick Helps People Feel Better By Quitting Alcohol In 30 days of not drinking, James lost 13 pounds, slept better, looked better, and got a job on ESPN.  After 30 days, James decided to stop drinking altogether; that was 12 years ago. Now that he doesn't drink, he has created a business to help people sleep better and to help people stop drinking. Even a seemingly innocent glass of alcohol each night has detrimental effects on your life.  Any amount of alcohol each night is enough to cause brain damage.  [07:10] Saying No To Peer Pressure and Alcohol Consumption The social pressure to drink is high. However, it is becoming lower. There is a worldwide movement of people becoming alcohol conscious. Millennials have never drunk less in their entire life. In fact, alcohol has a real image problem at the moment.  Remember, 93% of all communication is body language. Go through life being open and relaxed; that way, people don't harass you to drink. [15:05] Do You Struggle With Instant Gratification? Get Rid of Temptations  An alcohol buzz is a short-term pleasure. We should look at our life and make long-term choices.  Long-term pleasure is so much more pleasurable and rewarding. We all have to sacrifice something; should we sacrifice short-term rewards for long-term enjoyment?  James will sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain. The choices that you made six years ago can pay off today.  [19:20] Is It Possible To Drink Alcohol and Get A Good Night's Sleep?  Any amount of alcohol close to bedtime is going to disrupt your sleep. When you're tired, you tend to seek out sugary foods to give yourself an energy spike.  You are better off having alcohol for breakfast than at nighttime. That way, your body can work on getting rid of toxins during the day. There is a direct correlation between alcohol drinking and weight gain.  Also, alcohol will destroy energy levels.  [23:40] What A Lack of Sleep Is Doing To Your Body and Mind  When you are tired, you are miserable.  While on the other hand, when you sleep well, everything feels so much better. If you want to feel better, you need to put a premium on your sleep. Don't drink alcohol at night, don't eat before bedtime, and don't look at screens before bedtime.  Sleeping above 69 degrees is compromising your sleep.  When we have compromised sleep, we are not repairing and restoring.  Putting a high focus and premium on optimizing your sleep is critical. [29:30] Ditch Artificial Light and Live By Candlelight During The Night Any artificial light at night compromises your sleep.  Light will suppress your body's melatonin release. Blocking artificial light is imperative to ensure you have a good night's sleep.  The best thing you can do at night is to live by candlelight.  Flame does not suppress your body's melatonin production.  [35:40] Why You Need Both Clear Lens Glasses and Orange Lens Glasses  Clear lens blue light-blocking glasses will filter blue light and are recommended for daytime computer use. At nighttime, you should switch to orange lens blue light-blocking glasses to ensure you block all the blue light responsible for suppressing melatonin production. Orange lens glasses will help you sleep better for nighttime use. You need both daytime glasses and orange lens glasses.  [39:25] Gratitude Changes Your Brain: Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier James will write down twenty things he is grateful for each morning.  Science shows that living a life of appreciation instead of expectation will result in lower stress and anxiety levels.  It can be challenging to think of 20 things each morning. However, you will realize how many things you must be grateful for.  What you feed energy to will expand.  AND MUCH MORE!
