After John Robert found a dragon's egg down by the swamp, he and his Grandpa Riley kept it a secret from Aunt Bess whose life was too hard to care about such things. That is until it hatched, grew to 14 feet in two months and drank all the coal oil in the barn. Well, something had to be done. Lucky for John Robert and Grandpa Riley it was the flyin' kind…
As Sade darns socks, Rush points out a Christmas card order book. Since Sade didn't bring it home, maybe Vic did? It seems like a simple thing to buy a few cards from his co-worker, but soon the competition, and pressure is on. Aunt Bess, and the landlord are each in the Christmas card business as well. Sade lists all the folks in the neighborhood who expect getting card sales, and Rush reads a few of the greetings in the card samples. What's a good neighbor to do? You just can't buy from everybody.Read More →

Me and Cousin Ed made a rare field trip over to Judd Apatow's production office. The prolific filmmaker and comedian generously opened up about the loss of his mentor Garry Shandling, filming his new movie on Staten Island with Pete Davidson, and his Grandma Molly who used to play Mojong with my Aunt Bess. We also tackle some “Touchy Subjects” such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudueau's blackface debacle, Sean Spicer's appearance on “Dancing With The Stars” and the recent Global Climate Strike. It all wraps up with a “Roast In Peace” tribute to the Cars' Rick Ocasek. Life is hard. Let's get through it together. At the conclusion of a channeling session held by Pat Sisson, Jerry notices something unusual and inexplicable about an elderly woman.
Sade enjoys the weather on the back porch as Vic comes home. She has a letter from her sister Bess, and gives it to Vic to read. Russell arrives home, offering a distraction for Vic in telling about Bluetooth Johnson finding money, having an itchy knee, and other trivial details. Vic reads the letter to himself, claiming he read it all, but Sade doesn’t believe he did more than skim through the news. Russell takes over to read the letter, out loud this time. He makes a mistake and reads Bess’s interjection of “ha ha” as “ham ham”. Can her handwriting be so poor? AsRead More →
Today's Guest: Filmmaker Lloyd Handwerker, director of the documentary Famous Nathan, about his grandfather Nathan Handwerker, founder of the Coney Island landmark, Nathan's. Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Lloyd Handwerker by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of Famous Nathan’s countermen who won’t be putting up with any bullsh*t from the likes of you, fella… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Growing up in New Jersey, my grandparents frequently took me by bus and train out to Brooklyn to visit my Great-Aunt Bess and Great-Uncle Max. Sometimes, we stayed in their tiny apartment and Aunt Bess cooked. But sometimes, my grandfather and I went off and spent the day at Coney Island, riding the rides and eating a hot dog and fries at the block-long Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand right on the boardwalk. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. LLOYD HANDWERKER podcast excerpt: "There was no semblance of a line at Nathan's. There were one area where you could only buy the hot dogs, one area where you could only get the drinks, and one area where you could only get the hamburgers -- unlike most fast food places, and what Nathan's does today. It might seem chaotic, but workers had a method of looking at the crowd and figuring out who they were going to serve next." You can LISTEN to this interview with filmmaker LLOYD HANDWERKER, director of the documentary of FAMOUS NATHAN, by clicking the audio player above! Last night, I watched Lloyd Handwerker’s documentary film, Famous Nathan, and it brought all the memories – the tastes, the smells and the sights – rushing back to me. Handwerker is the grandson of the founder of Nathan’s, Nathan Handwerker. And while he himself never worked in the family business, he has put together a movie packed with old film, pictures and interviews that immediately took me back in time to a place I treasured visiting with my own grandfather. Or, as I told my wife, it took me to a place I had recalled hundreds of times in dreams and never thought I’d see that way again. LLOYD HANDWERKER podcast excerpt: "My grandfather was the first to integrate the counter, around 1949. Coney Island was pretty segregated at that time." To quote the film’s description of Nathan Handwerker: “There was one Babe Ruth in baseball, one Einstein in science, and one Nathan in the food business.” Famous Nathan captures a moment – and a salty, kosher taste – in time, replete with enough dirty family laundry – this brother hated that one! Mama never loved Papa! So-and-so was cheap! -- to give anyone a delicious nosh, whether you’ve ever been to Coney Island or not. Key interview moments: • 6:10 Making sense of the chaos that also made Nathan's of Coney Island famous (besides the hot dogs); • 14:40 Why there is no biography of Nathan Handwerker; • 27:25 How the founder of Nathan's integrated his food counter. You might think an episode on the importance of language would be an easy topic to conquer for three people who speak on a weekly podcast. This, however, is not entirely the case. Jeff, Mona and Allen get meta as they discuss the importance of language and tackle the issues of rhetoric, political correctness, cronuts, the Bible, and new attempts on metaphors for God. All that, plus the brand new segment Fill in the Blanks: Etiquette Edition.
