A quote from Hamlet is how Kitty felt when getting her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.  Kitty was going through a difficult time dealing with her father's illness, a friend in the hospital, so much going on at one time.  It felt like the whole army was marching down on her.  How does someone diagnosed with pancreatic cancer feel like they are the luckist person in the world?  Kitty is very open in sharing her journey with us.  Kitty shares advice given to her husband from her Dr "Your wife is not a statistic, she is a person."  As well as her own advice, "Dont' lose hope, don't lose hope, be here while you're here." "As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever." This episode is dedicated to Charlotte Rae, a great inspiration and the woman who introduced us.  We love you Charlotte! It has blessed her with many great friends, not the least of which is her adopted mom, Charlotte Rae. Her career began in commercials, regional theatre and off Broadway. But he's also known for mentoring rising stars, such as with Lena Dunham for Girls, Pete Holmes  for Crashing, Amy Schumer for Trainwreck, and Pete Davidson for The King of Staten Island. Somehow, between all these projects, he's also created documentaries about George Carlin, Garry Shandling, Darryl Strawberry, and The Avett Brothers and published books of interviews called Sick in the Head. The thread through all of these avenues, however, is comedic storytelling. “It's like a tuning fork, where it's fun, it also services all of my other writing and all of my other projects,” he said about stand-up, specifically in regards to his 2017 special, The Return. “You really feel like you understand the audience and you're taking in information on an unconscious level of how to be funny.” In this interview, Apatow talks about writing comedy movies today, how to make voice-driven films, lessons from making documentaries, audience validation, and his new book Sicker in the Head.

George Carlin’s American Dream is a new, two-part, nearly-four-hour HBO documentary directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio. At 225 minutes, it actually runs 45 minutes shorter than Apatow’s previous HBO doc, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling. And: Brigsby Bear is a 2017 comedy-drama written by Kevin Costello and Kyle Mooney from a story by Mooney and directed by Dave McCary. Mooney is one of four major departures from the cast of Saturday Night Live last weekend. Brigsby Bear stars Mooney, Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Andy Samberg, and Matt Walsh. What to do when in the midst of unfathomable national tragedy, and your guest is 5 x Emmy Winner, Alan Zweibel, one of the funniest humans on the planet? Face the elephant in the room head-on. We discussed how comics and monologists deliver on a day like this, and what is verboten? From there we moved into personal, current COVID crisis, where listener Julie Warner, Billy Crystal's co-star in the film, Mr. Saturday Night, informed us we were depressing (she was playing… Alan is never is anything less than hysterical), and then we segued into his latest co-creation with Billy, Here Today, about an aging comedy writer whose memory is fading due to dementia. Har har har dee har har. Well, the story that inspired the film is crazy funny, as is Alan's telling of it. It was all comedy gold from there, covering Alan's many of Alan's most memorable collaborations, more on Billy from the early 70s standup days to their Tony-winning Broadway smash, 700 Sundays. The first sold joke to Morty Gunty (still a winner today), and other Borscht Belt favorites, to Larry David bombing at The Improv, Lorne Michaels recognizing his gift and hiring him in the very first wave of Saturday Night Live, where Alan's collaboration and friendship with Gilda Radner yielded iconic characters and moments, week after week, year after year, the trajectory of their relationship thru till her untimely end, where he wrote for her, yet again… his collab with Garry Shandling and their multiple Ace Award-Winning co-creation, It's The Garry Shandling Show, and the evolution of them… to writing Lunatics with Dave Barry and then For This We Left Egypt with Dave and Ada Mansbach, the definitive Haggadah in my house, to Alan's Bunny Bunny, his love letter to Gilda from page to stage, and his latest, Laugh Lines, My life Helping Funny People Be Funnier, which spans 50 years of fab stories, one after another… my favorite tonight, and it's such a Sophie's Choice with the wealth presented, is Alan's college poetry “recital.” I was crying. In the good way. This time with Alan was chicken soup with noodles, matzah balls, and latkes, for the pandemic, crazy-world weary soul. Make yourself a better human being by enjoying this fun chin wag I had with Judd Apatow about comedy and the George Carlin documentary he just made that premieres on HBO May 20th. Come get some laughter all over your face! I'll be honest with you, when Judd Apatow told me that he liked my podcast I thought he was bullshiting me. But then after I witnessed a suicide and put out a podcast about what happened and the PTSD that I experienced after, Judd sent me lovely message telling me that he thought it was brave that I talked about it and thought the episode would help a lot of people. Judd reaching out to me at that moment was also perfect timing because I had just watched the documentary Judd made about Garry Shandling and that had helped to lift me up when I was in my lowest, darkest place.   Judd is not only a comedian and comedy film director, he is one of the kindest and most thoughtful people in all of show business. I was tickled that he came to my humble little home to record this conversation with me. In this episode we talk about our tribe of comedians and the brilliant documentary on George Carlin that Judd just made that premieres on HBO May 20th. In a world full of stress and uncertainty comedy is more valuable than it has ever been.   I let the teenage comedy nerd in me run wild in this conversation, as Judd and I celebrated together our passion for comedy.   I know every drop of this interview is going to bring sunshine to your heart, and that is why it is my pleasure to present to you, the one and only Judd Apatow!

Co-host Garrett is back again—just when we had given him up for being more dead than Meatloaf. Special guest Carla from Burnt Korn, Alabama, hates it when people put fliers on her car window: “I came to get milk, not vinyl siding.” Team THN agrees! Of course, it would be kind of entertaining if you went to the local hardware store and some schmuck from Kroger stuck a “We got Milk!” flier on the windshield. Co-host Arik next lays down the gauntlet on Garrett. Once upon a time, Arik put the classic sitcom “Seinfeld” on the original Hate Napkin—thus inspiring a decade-long dispute on the worthiness of the show admittedly about nothing. What Arik despises most about the show is that it doesn't represent how adults actually talk. Sound engineer Pauly from Bali is quick to recognize that what Arik really hates are sitcoms. Arik next blathers with brainless references to “The Honeymooners,” porno Richard Scarry, Ricky Gervais, wedge-licking, Garry Shandling and whether or not Larry David is a vulgarian. Someone saves the day by declaring this The Bob Saget Tribute Show. This satisfies Arik—or at least shuts him up. In the end, Arik is outvoted about placing “Seinfeld” on The Hate Napkin. However, in a spirit of compromise, everyone votes to place the café from “Seinfeld” on The Hate Napkin, as well as the entire cast of “Friends,” except Lisa Kudrow. Carla counters: “Who cares? I'm a ‘Golden Girls' fan.” Finally, A Day in the Life of Garrett—which may or may not include references to NyQuil, death threats, blackouts, TSA double-sided dildos, blue balls and blue streaks, Michael Imperioli and a menagerie of furry critters. Definitely not a life about nothing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thehatenapkin/support
