Joe sits down with Writer/Director/Producer Andrew Jay Cohen who is in the thick of post production on his latest directorial offering, Soapbox written by Max Barbakow and David Duchovny. Before diving into the weeds with his directorial and post production process, Andrew gives insight on what he took from his time working alongside Judd Apatow for a number of years on films like Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin and more. Andrew is incredibly honest about his perfectionist streak and the freedom that Apatow's approach to the script and production gave him. He also talks about what having a critical & box office bomb taught him and how his first major success, Neighbors was a dream come true. He dives into a bit of the post production process for Soapbox with Joe. Gems Gems Gems! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Gary Gulman is one of the sharpest and the most respected stand up comedians working today. Known for his brilliantly detailed observational comedy, Gary has built a career turning the smallest human anxieties into epic philosophical events. Whether he's talking about state abbreviations, Trader Joe's childhood misunderstandings or the emotional collapse triggered by a routine email, he somehow makes overthinking feel heroic. Gary's acclaimed HBO special, The Great Depression earned widespread praise for Very Good, Very Good for its honest and darkly funny exploration of depression and mental health, showing a level of vulnerability that's rare and stand up very rare. He's also appeared on nearly every major late night show, released multiple acclaimed specials, and is widely regarded by comedians as one of the best joke writers alive. He can take a completely normal thought buying cereal, sending a text standing in line and reveal that modern civilization may actually be hanging by a thread. On this episode of Really? no Really?, Jason and Peter dive in with how Gary has been able to not only handle his depression but also how to utilize it as a creative force for his brand of comedy. We'll also touch upon various topics and experiences that have helped shape Gary's trauma and art. From being bullied at Jewish Summer Camp to having Judd Apatow produce his special and offer him words of advice on his career. We have a lot to cover on this episode of Really? no Really?. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageMark Canton, producer of 300, Immortals, Men in Black, Air Force One, and My Best Friend's Wedding, former President of Worldwide Production at Warner Bros., and former Chairman of Columbia Pictures and Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Companies, joins host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about a career defined by passion and instinct. From delivering mail on the Warner Bros. lot as a college student to greenlighting some of Hollywood's most beloved films, Canton reflects on the legends he learned from, the risks he took, and why he still smells the circus every time he walks onto a sound stage.Queens, New York, and Family (02:34): Canton traces his love of film to a father who survived being shot down over France in WWII, won an Oscar for a short film on Van Gogh, and went on to do publicity for Hitchcock and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to a mother who was a published poet. The movies, he says, were always destiny.Learning from the Greats on Papillon (15:22): Working for director Franklin Schaffner in Jamaica and living between the houses of Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, Canton learned what it meant to commit to a film. From the Warner Bros. Mail Room to Running the Studio (20:31): Canton traces his rise from UCLA film student to head of Worldwide Production at Warner Bros., sharing stories about the Vacation franchise, Caddyshack, and Lethal Weapon.Taking the Helm at Columbia Pictures (39:22): Recruited by Peter Guber and Jon Peters, Canton became Chairman of Columbia Pictures and later oversaw Columbia TriStar. He reflects on the team he assembled and the record-breaking run that followed, including Jerry Maguire, My Best Friend's Wedding, Bad Boys, and Air Force One.The Art of the Difficult Screening (47:51): Canton recounts two defining test screening moments: a chaotic preview of Scorsese's The Age of Innocence in a New Jersey bowling alley, and a tough audience response to Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional that led to an ultimatum and a reworked film that became a modern classic. The Cable Guy and No Regrets (50:43): Canton defends paying Jim Carrey $17 million and notes what history confirmed: the film launched Ben Stiller's directing career, introduced Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Judd Apatow. He also recalls his affectionate standoff with Mike Nichols over the ending of Wolf. What Keeps Audiences Coming Back (54:50): Canton argues that what fills theaters today is the same thing that made Purple Rain a phenomenon: the feeling of a live, communal, irreplaceable experience.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Mark CantonProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Mark Canton:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_CantonIMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004799/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markcanton/?hl=enFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

Before there were algorithms and tape submissions and studio approved lists, Allison Jones was sitting in the back rows of comedy clubs — memorizing faces, taking notes, and developing the kind of taste that can't be taught. In the second episode of our Wired to Create series, Kelly sits down with the casting director whose fingerprints are on some of the most beloved comedies ever made — from Freaks and Geeks to Bridesmaids to Barbie — to talk about what she's really looking for when someone walks into the room, why "funny or not funny" is still her most reliable compass, and what gets lost when studio oversight starts to crowd out pure creative instinct. This episode was made possible by a grant from the Walton Family Foundation. To learn more, please visit: waltonfamilyfoundation.org. In this episode, we break down SUPERBAD — the coming-of-age comedy that perfectly captures the chaos, insecurity, and friendship of high school. We dive into the chemistry between Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, the unforgettable side characters like McLovin, and how the film balances ridiculous humor with surprisingly real emotional stakes. We analyze why Superbad feels so authentic, how its writing captures the awkwardness of growing up, and why the movie has remained one of the most rewatchable comedies of the 2000s. A short film has never met its moment like THE SEEING EYE DOG WHO SAW TOO MUCH (2026), which premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival this month. Of course it won the audience award -- how could it not? The film, as filmmaker Eric Jackowitz explains, is a homage to Italian giallo films, a mix of mystery horror and thriller films that peaked in the 1970s.Eric's career, as a filmmaker and musician based in Los Angeles, led him to this moment. He plays drums, attended the Berklee College of Music, and I'll say it: he's a brilliant director. The audience at SXSW agrees. And I think you will, too, after hearing our discussion. In this episode, Eric and I discuss:the first time reaction and sensory overload of seeing his award-winning film;why the film was so perfect for SXSW's Midnight Madness competition;what is giallo films and why he was drawn to making one of his own;how he got started in filmmaking and if he has any preferences in terms of writing, directing, and scoring films;what indie filmmakers don't understand about comedy and music in their films;his thoughts on the podcast space for filmmakers;hidden genres of indie films;what's next for him and his advice for people who didn't make SXSW with their films (with a crazy Judd Apatow story!);Eric's Indie Film Highlights: GRIND (2026) dir. by Brea Grant; Chelsea Stardust; Ed Dougherty; I LOVE BOOSTERS (2026) dir. by Boots RileyMemorable Quotes:"It's very mixed, but it ranges on a scale, right? There's people that really get it, who understand giallo films, who are horror fans, who are comedy fans. And then on the other end of it, there are people who are like, wow, I really like that. I don't really know what you were referencing."On giallo films: "And they're so bad. It's good. So good, it's good and so great, it's good.""And I feel like in a short block you have to, and with the goal of making a feature, you have to make as big of a announcement as possible.""Music is an afterthought.""I'm very happy to announce that I actually just quit my job podcasting."Links:Follow Eric On InstagramFollow THE SEEING EYE DOG WHO SAW TOO MUCH On Instagram

We sit down with guitarist and composer Lyle Workman to trace the real-life path from Bay Area bands to major film soundtracks and global stages. We talk craft, money, gear, and the unlikely chain of moments that turns a working player into the go-to sound behind hit movies and tours. FEAST!
For their 100th (give or take) episode, Harry and Daniel celebrate a major milestone by revisiting where it all began—with their very first guest, Yuli Masinovsky. Together, they keep things loose, reflective, and a little bit meta as they dive into The 99 Year Old Man, the documentary from Judd Apatow chronicling the life and legacy of Mel Brooks.Along the way, the trio looks back on four years of podcasting—how the show has evolved from plot-heavy breakdowns to more thematic, free-flowing conversations—and what it means to build a creative project over time while balancing careers, families, and life changes. They revisit early Jews on Film staples like “the stretch,” the IMDb summary, and the ever-elusive perfect format. On the film side, the conversation explores Brooks as both a comedic pioneer and a complicated cultural figure: his role in shaping Jewish-American humor, his connection to figures like Sid Caesar, and the lineage of comedy that runs from the Borscht Belt to today. The group also digs into the documentary itself—its length, structure, and whether it reveals anything new about a performer who's always “on.”Most provocatively, the episode wrestles with questions of Jewish identity in Brooks' work: Is his humor a bridge to mainstream audiences or a performance for an in-group? Does the film sidestep deeper explorations of Judaism in favor of persona and mythmaking? And what does it mean for a Jewish artist to both embrace and satirize his own identity? It's a celebratory, thoughtful, and occasionally heated conversation about comedy, legacy, assimilation, and storytelling—plus a few looks ahead to the next 100 episodes.Mazel tov to Jews on Film… and here's to 100 more. The 99 Year Old Man Movie TrailerThe 99 Year Old Man on IMDbConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpod

Send a textMartin Belmont was about 11 or 12 years old, a kid growing up in England, when he asked his parents to buy him a guitar. The first record he got was “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley. Around that time, The Shadows, out of London, were a popular instrumental group. America had The Ventures, England had The Shadows. Young Martin was fascinated by the look and sound of Hank Marvin's Fender Stratocaster. In art school, Martin made friends with other guitarists and musicians and after leaving school, he moved to London. Through a mutual friend, he met the members of two bands, Help Yourself and Brinsley Schwarz. The Brinsleys were in need of a roadie. Martin played that role for about a year before forming his own band, Ducks Deluxe. They signed with RCA, the label Martin's childhood hero Elvis had been on. The next band he co-formed along with guitarist Brinsley Schwarz and keyboardist Bob Andrews was The Rumour, best known for backing Graham Parker with Andrew Bodnar on bass and Steve Goulding on drums. The rest, as they say, is history.Photo courtesy of Martin Belmont.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. A few years ago I was in LA and I went with my friend Chad to a "Judd Apatow and friends" comedy show where I was blown away by the lineup he brought out. Ray Romano! Zach Galifianakis! And, of course, the incredible Pete Holmes. Pete was my favorite comic that night. I have loved his comedy for years! And his book 'Comedy Sex God' was a wonderful read. My parents are Hindu but I grew up in the secular suburbs of Toronto being exposed to many different religions. Pete was very religious, and then wasn't, and now is again ... in this thoughtful, examining, spiritual way. His book, which is essentially his memoir, chronicles his journey through faith with lots of laughs and his trademark mind-expanding insights along the way. Pete's podcast You Made It Weird is a comedic exploration of the meaning of life, with guests ranging from Ryan Holiday to Mayim Bialik to Ben Stiller. Pete also starred in the HBO show Crashing which he executive produced with Judd Apatow. And, big news, he is currently touring! He's in Miami, LA, Royal Oaks, Irving, Madison, and Denver before the summer. Check out his comedy specials: Impregnated with Wonder (2011), Nice Try, The Devil (2013), Faces and Sounds (2016), Dirty Clean (2018), and I Am Not For Everyone (2023). So flip the page back to Chapter 40 of 3 Books and talk about why we withhold love, why myths are always true and sometimes really happen, why our brains want certainty but our hearts are comfortable with mystery, the salty sweet conundrum of life, and, of course, Pete's 3 most formative books. I hope you enjoy this classic chapter with Pete Holmes.

Hughley, being nominated for an Emmy while driving for a rideshare company, and the future of sitcoms and rideshare and can they be combined? Bio: Jay Mandyam was pushed into doing stand-up comedy by one of his college professors at the age of 19. He has worked with national headliners including: Whitney Cummings, Chris Hardwick, Tim Allen, & his comedic idols Christopher Titus and Paul Reiser. For the last few years, Jay has been seen opening regularly for Russell Peters, DL Hughley, and the late Louie Anderson. Jay's comedy focuses on himself; sharing stories about all the times his big mouth has gotten him in trouble. In 2018, Jay made his international debut by touring India. As for television, Jay was featured on the hit HBO show “Silicon Valley”. He also made a couple of appearances on Comedy Central's “@midnight”, Howard Stern's “The Wrap Up Show”, and "Modern Family". In addition to stand-up, Jay is an accomplished writer, having written on the Netflix show “The Fix”, and Adam Sandler's Netflix special “100% Fresh”. In 2019, Jay was seen every night as “Indian Jay” on "The DL Hughley Show" on TVOne. When the world shut down in 2020, Judd Apatow convinced Jay to go to USC to work on his directing skills. Jay was the first student at USC to do a multicam sitcom pilot with a studio audience as his thesis project, which was nominated for a college Emmy. Most recently, Jay was seen alongside Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, Steve, Dana and guest host Sam Adams talk anti-authoritarian art in its many forms. First, they take up It Was Just an Accident, the Cannes Palme d'Or-winning film by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. Inspired in part by Panahi's own experience being imprisoned for critiquing the Iranian government, his new film—made in secret from the regime— holds back little in its sharp political critique, rage, and… a surprising amount of comedy. Not surprising in its amount of comedy— but maybe in its frequently anti-authoritarian politics—is Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! The documentary series about the showbiz legend, produced by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, is a loving portrait of the long, unmatched, and revolutionary in its own way, career of Brooks.Inspired by the recent release “Streets of Minneapolis” by Bruce Springsteen, the panel dedicates its final segment to the state of protest music in 2026. Joined by music critic Carl Wilson, of the Slate and Crritic!, they discuss the long tradition and still potent power of singer/songwriters with acoustic guitars—and the many political artists who defy that stereotype. To hear some of the music they talked about, plus several more current protest songs, check out our 2026 Protest Playlist. In our bonus episode for Plus subscribers, the gang eulogizes the divine comic genius of Catherine O'Hara. Our Celebrity News starts with a Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, your favorite daily comedy show where deep philosophical questions last about 90 seconds before turning into chaos.Today's episode starts deceptively thoughtful: What genre is your life? Comedy? Horror? Rom-com? Greek tragedy? Straight-to-DVD disappointment? The crew breaks it down in the only way they know how — by roasting each other, name-dropping directors, and somehow landing on Tim Burton, Judd Apatow, Michael Bay, and Tommy Wiseau in the same breath. From there, things escalate fast. The gang debates the worst Super Bowl halftime show of all time, re-litigates Maroon 5's shirtless crimes against humanity, and tries (and fails) to agree on whether Bad Bunny, Kid Rock, or literally anyone else should be allowed near a halftime stage ever again. Spoiler: nobody wins. For you music nerds get fed too. KISS casually hits one billion YouTube views, Queen's touring future sparks debate, Aerosmith dreams are manifested aggressively, and a wild Paste Magazine “Top Guitarists of All Time” list sends the room into full disbelief when legends are left off and Prince reigns supreme. There's also real-world stuff mixed into the madness — heartfelt tributes, shocking news updates, and moments where the show accidentally becomes emotional before immediately undercutting it with jokes (as tradition demands).Basically, this daily comedy show has everything:Existential life questionsSuper Bowl halftime rageRock music historyQuestionable celebrity listsAccidental documentaries about being humanAnd the reminder that everyone's life is probably a comedy… just shot very poorlyIf you're here for a funny podcast, a daily show that refuses to stay on topic, or a comedy podcast that feels like your group chat came to life on the radio — congratulations, you're home.Stick around, subscribe, and prepare to question what genre your life is… while we absolutely do not fix ours.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MOSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Truly, one of the more random collections of films we've reviewed lately on Breakfast All Day. On this mid-week drop, we've got: SEND HELP. Sam Raimi is back, directing the kind of truly gonzo horror-comedy he made his name on decades ago. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien star as co-workers trapped together on a deserted island after a plane crash. We enjoyed this so much, we wanted to do an early review. In theaters Friday. MEL BROOKS: THE 99 YEAR OLD MAN! This delightful, two-part documentary explores the life and career of one of the absolute comedy greats of our time. Judd Apatow co-directs, and has gathered a staggering array of A-listers to discuss Brooks' films and his influence. Streaming now on HBO Max. ARCO. We feel so-so about this French film, which is nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature. A 10-year-old boy from the distant future travels back in time with the help of a rainbow-colored cloak and befriends a girl in the year 2075. We saw the English-language dub featuring the voices of Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, Andy Samberg, America Ferrera and Flea. In theaters now. Thanks for hanging out with us! It looks at his origins in Brooklyn, his service in WWII, his EGOT-winning comedy career and lifelong friendship with Carl Reiner. We're returning to our 1991 and 2001 interviews with Brooks. Dean Karayanis, New York Sun columnist and former member of Rush Limbaugh's "highly overrated staff," sits in for his final show before Derek returns on Monday, January 5th. Topics include Mayor Mamdani choosing a subway station in New York City that was built by private enterprise to kick of his government-first agenda, the people of Iran striking and protesting against the dictatorship, how the America250 "United States Semisesquicentennial" may evolve into a catcher term, and Judd Apatow reflecting how Hollywood refuses to accept it's failures; it's easier to blame their usual right-wing bogeymen instead. A clip from Bill Murray's critically panned "The Razor's Edge" shows that artists ought to have the freedom to try new things, but respect the audience's verdict. Plus, words from Baroness Margaret Thatcher encouraging us all to reach for our destiny in 2026.

The New Yorker turned a hundred this year. And marking the occasion is a new documentary film on Netflix titled: “The New Yorker at 100”. But with some 5000 print issues, and ten decades worth of reporting, illustrating, and editing… where does one even begin? That's a question staff writer Jelani Cobb brought to the film's director, Marshall Curry, and executive producer, Judd Apatow, on an edition of The New Yorker Radio Hour that we're sharing this week.
