In this episode, we build on last week's discussion of the gospel-centered teacher by expanding our focus to the larger church community. Paul's words in 2 Timothy 2:20–26 show us what it means to be a clean vessel and a faithful servant within God's household. This message isn't just for teachers—it's for everyone in the church.Key Topics:The Clean Vessel (vv. 20–22)The church contains both honorable and dishonorable vessels—faithful and unfaithful servants.Honorable vessels are cleansed, set apart, and useful for every good work. We're called to flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, embodying holiness in both doctrine and character. The Lord's Servant (vv. 23–26)God's servants avoid foolish controversies and refuse to be quarrelsome. They must be kind, patient, and correct opponents with gentleness. The aim is not to win arguments, but to win souls—praying that God grants repentance and freedom from the enemy's snare.Who Is Sufficient? The call to be a holy vessel and gentle servant is weighty, but we're not left to ourselves.Jesus is our model and our means—He is the perfect workman, vessel, and servant.Through Him, we are made sufficient for every good work.Quote of the Week:“It is not great talents God blesses so much as likeness to Jesus.” – Robert Murray M'CheyneJoin us as we reflect on what it means to be vessels of honor, ready for the Master's use, and committed to gentle, gospel-centered correction in a world filled with strife.

This week, I'm unpacking the helpful and surprising connection between Allen Carr's method for quitting smoking and breaking free from overeating. What does lighting a cigarette have in common with late-night snacking or emotional eating? More than you think. I share the stats, the mindset shift that changes everything, and how we can use Maester Carr's wisdom to step into more freedom and fewer food regrets. I also give you an update on my Pacific Crest Trail training (the blisters are real!) and talk about how I plan for my joy eats—and why that makes all the difference.  This one is part insight, part inspiration, and all about reclaiming your agency, one intentional decision at a time. Tune in and let's walk this path together!Quote of the Week:“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – by Mahatma GandhiLet's go, let's get it done. When you read this column, many of you will be wearing green and celebrating St. Patrick's Day in your own sweet way. It is interesting that this day is a great day, not only for the Irish, but is observed throughout the country. The day is three days before the first day of spring, and wearing green reminds us of the season of spring and is symbolic of life. The wearing of the green on St. Patrick's Day has long been featured in our country. This little poem says it so well: "St. Patrick, it was who started the style, let's wear a bit of green for the Irish - a cheer; for the Shamrock - a smile. Let's all wear a little bit of green." In my research on St. Patrick's Day, I found that March 17th was the day St. Patrick died in AD 461. He was a Christian missionary to Ireland in the fifth century, and the founder of many schools and churches. St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, is their greatest holiday, as well as holy day, and this day is celebrated by Irish families all over the world. The Shamrock is Ireland's chief emblem. I found it interesting that a town named for it is in the warm sunshine state of Florida. Each year, many persons send letters there to be stand with the Shamrock postmark. I have always been impressed with the Irish wit and the Blarney of my Irish friends. I love their sense of humor and all those motivational skills they seem to be born with. I had always wished for a bit of Irish ancestry in my heritage, but in my genealogy studies have found none. I have chosen some very special friends who have been blessed with all that Irish wit and wisdom. One of those friends has her birthday the day before St. Patrick's Day, and we have been friends since high school days. We have shared our joys and sorrows, our challenges and our dreams. We shared those on the job training, experiences of parenting and now grandparenting. She is a true friend who revealed to me she has prayed every day for me. No wonder she is my cheerleader. How thankful one needs to be when you have a very special friend. As we see the signs of spring appearing, many warm thoughts fill our hearts and minds. Underneath that blanket of snow, there is life, and the snow birds of Florida and Texas are returning to the north and the heartland of America. May the season of spring have special meaning in our lives. A bit of Irish wit: "Where beauty has no ebb, decay, no flood, but joy is wisdom, time, and endless song." WB Yeats - "In the Land of Hearts Desire. A Warm Thought for the Week: "It is often just as sacred to laugh as it is to pray." Charles R Swindoll. Have a great week and remember to laugh and pray! The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid has been named North American Car of the Year, and nobody knows more about the car and process than NACTOY jurors Jack Nerad and Matt DeLorenzo, who host and co-host this week's show. They'll take you behind the scenes to discuss not only the winning vehicle but also the procedures that resulted in the choice of Honda's highly popular compact car. At the same time, Nerad and DeLorenzo will offer long looks at the winners of the North American Utility of the Year and North American Truck of the Year — the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the 2025 Ford Ranger. You'll hear commentary on these vehicles you won't get anywhere else. In our interview segment this week, you'll also hear a discussion you won't hear anywhere else. Russell Wager, Kia America's vice president of marketing, is our guest. Jack Nerad sat down with him to talk about the opportunities and challenges presented as the country transitions from the Biden years to the Trump era. Speaking of Biden, as one of his last acts in office, he and his Administration essentially banned Chinese-built cars from entering the U.S. market and, at the same time, banned vehicles with Chinese technology and hardware. We'll discuss the ramifications of that coming up. In our road test segment, guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo will detail the special virtues of the 2025 Infiniti QX55, and Jack Nerad will provide an in-depth report on the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric — a vehicle that might be the best value among battery-electric vehicles right now. As SpyCast listeners will know, issues of intelligence and espionage are constantly going on all around us – But how does the public stay in the know and up to date on the latest cases and news from around the world? I was at Internet World launching RealNames to the world. RealNames invented paid clicks on keywords. Our first partner was AltaVista, and Google was our second—calling the feature "I'm Feeling Lucky."It was the simplest technology ever. We had a keyword, bought by a customer. An example might be Disney buying "Bambi." They would buy it in every country and language they wanted and point it to a specific URL in each place. Search engines would look at the keywords you typed in (later browsers too) and if RealNames had it as a paid keyword, they would send the user to the site, with no search results. Just a direct navigation. RealNames got paid for the customer sent.At the launch, we used the example of the keyword “Bambi” to show how superior our keywords were compared to domain names. In those days, Bambi.com pointed to a porn site. Our launch demo showed that typing "Bambi" went to Disney, but typing "Bambi.com" did not. All was well except we altered our network settings the eve of the launch, and when we demoed the use of "Bambi" at the launch, it (you can guess) went to the porn site.Journalists wrote about RealNames as a scam and bad actors.Luckily, we had great partners, and within 12 hours the network issue was fixed, and all was well. But for 24 hours, I felt like the world was collapsing around me. On the one hand, we launched our company, mostly to great acclaim; on the other, we were being destroyed in the tech media.Sam, I know how this week must have felt. Your decision to pull the ‘Sky' voice was right. And despite the horrors of the first 24 hours, this will pass. That said, you mismanaged this entire thing. I'm sure you acted in good faith in wanting to embrace the “Her” meme. It is a good idea. And ‘Sky' was a good effort. It seems clear you had spoken to Scarlett Johansson and failed to reach an agreement. I'm prepared to believe you could not react fast enough to change the voice prior to the demo. But once it went awry, you needed to do more than wait for a legal challenge before pulling it, and you needed to say something before the actress. Not doing so means that many people, probably most, think you did the entire thing on purpose.Clearly, you did not preconceive this. If you did, then the fact that you were happy to pull the voice, and your knowledge that the actress was not prepared to have her voice used, would have stopped you before it got as far as it did. You would be very reckless to have thought you could get away with using a voice like hers without her permission. So, you need to either go on the record and get this behind you or ignore it and hope it goes away. I think now we have ‘ScarJo' as a word, the latter might prove difficult.Best Regards,Keith (A fellow Founder)Beyond ScarJo there are some great essays this week. Pack McCormick writes about why AI will lead to more jobs and bigger companies. In framing his case he says”Technologies are tools. I don't mean that in the normal way that people mean it to say that technology is neither good nor bad.Tools are good.Humans can build better things with tools than they can without them. But tools aren't the point. They're tools.Tools lead to new possibilities and those lead to new endeavors. Read his essay below. And a team made up of @KamalVC, @VaradanMonisha, @Claudiazeisberg have penned an essay called ‘The Pervasive, Head-Scratching, Risk-Exploding Problem With Venture Capital'. The main thesis is about investing in private companies versus public companies. They have a great graphic showing that the range of outcomes in Venture Capital is very wide compared to other asset classes:Venture Capital's top percentiles out-perform other asset classes, but most do not. The safest asset class is global equity (public company stock).Building on this they show that large Venture investors that invest across 500 or more companies can compete with less risky assets by diversification. This depicts a simulation of a manager doing 15 deals, compared to 500 and shows more deals equals less risk.I recommend reading the full piece, linked in the contents above and the headline below. I think they are right, but there is a better way of derisking. The advice they give below is better than traditional venture capital, but that is a low bar:To de-risk venture capital, CIOs simply need to acknowledge that VC math is different from public markets math. The importance of low-probability, excess-return-generating investments means that proper diversification requires a portfolio of at least 500 startups. It will take work to assemble such a portfolio. It is hard to do by investing directly. Current funds and funds-of-funds are rarely designed with diversification in mind. Instead, they concentrate funding in a small subset of ultra-popular entrepreneurs, sectors, and geographies, which risks driving down returns on capital, leaving higher-return strategies underfunded.Investors who allocate and diversify their funds wisely and accept the evidence will not only achieve better and less-volatile returns, but will also ultimately nudge GPs to finally design diversified funds. In my day job - also about de-risking venture - we use AI to reduce risk, removing companies that are highly unlikely to be successful. The remaining companies (about 7% of the full set of venture backed companies) out-perform the market in a narrower band of outcomes:Here is how the SignalRank Index compares to the S&P500 and the NASDAQ. We assume an investor puts $1 into the S&P, the NASDAQ and The SignalRank Index in each year from 2014-2019 and then show the returns from each (average and median in the case of SignalRank). The median outcome from venture investments is that the investor loses money. The average is a lot better. But almost no managers achieve the average. By using AI to reduce risk we get the average outcome in 2014 to be 4.31x the investment (the white numbers), compared to the S&P500 1.39 and the NASDAQ 1.89. SignalRanks Median outcome is 2.24.De-risking venture capital is important and the writers of the essay show that it is possible to de-risk by diversification. But we can do even better by both diversifying and using data intelligence to remove downside outliers.I will leave you with that thought. More next week This is a public episode. Hey, Pathfinders! Surprise Friday episode, anyone? We thought we'd shake things up a bit and bring you some bonus travel content to fuel your wanderlust. Not sure what to call it yet or how often we'll do these, but we're excited to add a little extra travel talk to your lives, straight from our adventures. But first, let's kick things off with a quote that really resonated with us from our recent chat with Jeremy from the RV Atlas.   Quote of the Week "It's about getting outside for me... making memories with my family. It is not about the features of the RV." This quote got us thinking about prioritizing experiences over material possessions, whether it's choosing an RV or making any big purchase in life. Every dollar saved means more opportunities to explore new places and create lasting memories. So before splurging on fancy features, ask yourself if they align with your travel goals or if you're just buying into the hype. Learning from Personal Experiences Take it from our own experiences, like the time I bought a flashy truck fresh out of college, only to realize later it wasn't the smartest financial move. It's easy to get caught up in the allure of new gadgets or bigger, better things, but often, simplicity reigns supreme. Whether it's a vehicle, a home, or even just everyday purchases, consider the long-term impact on your finances and travel aspirations. Our Southern Adventure: North Bend Park Upgrade Speaking of travel, let's dive into our latest adventure down south to the Florida Keys. Currently, we're situated in Raleigh, North Carolina, catching up with family while we get some work done. But before that, we scored a sweet campsite upgrade at North Bend Park in Southern Virginia. How we did it? Hope asked the park staff at check in if there were any better sites available. We lucked out with a waterfront spot overlooking a serene cove, perfect for fishing and soaking in those sunrise views. Best of all, it cost us nothing more! Planning Your Own Epic Road Trip And hey, if you're itching to hit the road like we did, we've got you covered with a step-by-step guide for your own epic road trip. Shoot us an email or sign up for our newsletter for your free copy. Fueling Your Adventures with Delicioats Now, let's talk sustenance. Have you tried Delicioats yet? These overnight oats are our go-to travel fuel, packed with great ingredients and NO ADDED SUGAR. Use the link below and the discount code “PATH” to claim your discount! ·        https://delicioats.com/discount/PATH Use Code “PATH” Transcript Hey, Pathfinders, surprised to hear me on a Friday? So we decided to add another segment to our show, not sure entirely what it's gonna be called or how often these little Friday extras are gonna be, but we figured it's a great way to add a little extra travel content to your lives with some helpful details from our lives to help you reach your travel goals. And who knows, maybe at the end of this segment, we will reveal our guest for next Monday and we can keep that our little Friday secret. I wanted to start by sharing one of our favorite quotes from the show earlier in the week with Jeremy from the RV Atlas, where he talked about choosing experiences over features when considering buying an RV. And I'll play that quote right now.   - It's about getting outside for me. For me, it's getting outside, making memories with my family. It is not about the features of the RV. And I say that as somebody, I love RVs. And a lot of times when you get a more expensive RV that has tons of features in it, you end up messing with them a lot or this doesn't work or that doesn't work. I have just really come to appreciate simple, basic, straightforward RVs that work well and are priced well. –   Now, one thing that resonated with me about that quote, and I think you can look at it both like it's implied with RVs, but also with everything you're buying in life in general. And listen, every time you can save a buck or save a dollar or more, travel's expensive, right? So if you can find ways to save here and there, that's more opportunity for you to travel and explore and get to the places you wanna get to. And every little bell and whistle and feature of these newer RVs, they add up, right? I think it was a great segment of that podcast where we just talked about, it's about getting outside. Once it's raining outside, we're really not spending time in RVs at all. We wanna be outside exploring, whether it's hiking trails, hanging out at the campground, exploring the towns we're visiting. And I related to that a lot about when you're at an RV dealership and all these new things have all these new, bigger, smarter things that you can do and features to your RVs. First of all, you're really not going to use them that much, right? I remember we had this swivel chair, and now currently I'm using it because we're traveling full-time and working on it, but originally bought our van to travel and vacation and to not work. And we wanted to just make this recreation vacation type thing. And we thought it was so cool how the seat swiveled backwards and we didn't use it once. So it's important to really think about, are you going to use these things? And Jeremy did a great job explaining that point, geared towards RVing, and when you're buying an RV, you can relate a lot of that to things in real life.   For instance, if you're buying a car, right? A lot of times, you work with your car, do you have a certain car or truck you wanna buy? And it reminded me of a time when I was graduating college, I wanted to buy this F-150. At 2013, at the time, it was three years old, it was my motivation to graduate college, right? And looking back on that, it was a terrible financial decision because I had graduated school, had nothing in my bank account, had to have my father co-sign my truck for me, and I had a $500 payment for a pickup truck. And when I didn't even need a pickup truck to begin with, I didn't have a job or wasn't doing anything that I needed a truck for, but I had this massive $500 payment I was paying each month because it was new, I liked it, I was a truck guy. And after about a month or so, that novelty wears off fast. Before long, I just viewed it as a truck, as a normal car, I didn't think anything much of it. Obviously the first few weeks, I'd raise the current, raise the blinds and look out at it, and I'd be so proud and happy the fact that I have it, but after a while, I was stuck with a payment, and I could have been just as happy driving a much older truck, a car that was much less expensive. And that reminded me, when Jeremy had mentioned that during our show, it kinda reminded me of that where you really need to consider long-term, especially if you're financing or buying really expensive things, how much of an impact is buying this extra piece or buying this extra fancy car going to have on you other than you paying more for it? And I saw the same thing a lot with real estate. When you're buying a house, I would always tell my clients now selling houses, you wanna offer what you can, but just because you can afford something bigger and better, it doesn't mean you need one, right? If you're listening to this podcast, you're trying to reach your travel goals. That's what we were trying to do for a while, and if you're listening to this podcast, you're trying to do the same thing, right? So in a lot of instances, I see people, they buy houses that all they're going to do after a while is fill rooms they're not using with stuff they don't need. They're paying extra heating costs, extra moving costs, extra costs for things that they don't need. All this money could be used for something else. Really ask yourself how much of that is it a need versus how much of it is you want to impress others or is it just a keeping up with the Jones type thing? Because like I said, I mean, travel is not cheap. Travel is expensive no matter what form of travel you're doing. The more money you can save, the more opportunity you have with travel. So just really think about those things before you buy anything really expensive because especially if you're financing those monthly payments, they do not go away for a long time. And picture yourself five, 10 years from now having that extra payment and really think about am I going to be using these extra features, these extra space, is this extra payment versus something I could get and have the same use for half the price, is it worth that extra? Again, not saying don't go after it but it's just something to really, really consider before you pull the trigger and make a purchase. So I wanted to share that a little bit because that kind of stuck to me.   So maybe we'll keep this a segment of the podcast kind of sharing our favorite quotes, things that resonated with us and putting our little twist and spin on it. I will fill you in currently. So right now, Hope and I were traveling south towards the Florida Keys. We're hunkered down in Raleigh, North Carolina right now, visiting family, getting some work done. A couple of things we've learned, some tips for your travels in the future. Always check in with the camp staff to figure out or to find out if there's any better sites available. So we had booked a site at the North Bend Park in Southern Virginia, had a site that was, it was pretty secluded in the woods, a smaller site. Hope had the really, really an idea of asking the park staff when we went to check in if there were any other better sites available. He gave us a few sites, said they were a little bit better than what we currently had. Nothing was really direct waterfront or anything like that, but they were basically a step up from what we had. So we decided to go check out those two other sites he gave us. The first site we saw, site number 196, huge, it was a big site and it had waterfront not overlooking the lake, but overlooking a cove in the lake, which was just perfectly fine for us. And the second we saw that we double checked, it was the right number that he had given us, we fired back to the main office. Thankfully, no one else had taken it yet. And we were moved to that site and we spent the next seven days, the next five days hunkered down there. It was a two-tiered site, so we backed the van in, had to walk a couple of steps down to this big landing where there was a picnic table, a grilling area, and then the entire back of the site just faced the water, was able to go fishing. And it was just really beautiful watching the sun rise right in front of us. We did drive back through the other part and looked at the site we had originally booked and that was really tucked away, no water views at all, heavily wooded, not entirely sure how our Starlink would have worked. That was our first time firing up Starlink as well and it worked great for us because we had it by the water, so there was an opening and it worked really fast. So have you been tuning into our podcast and everybody's been talking about how Starlink is great? We can have out for that. That was our week in North Bend National, or North Bend Park in Southern Virginia. And yeah, definitely when you're booking a site, always ask with the staff and figure out if there's any other better sites available.   And I do wanna remind you, but we do have a newsletter going around and what we just created was a step-by-step guide on the steps that Hope and I took to take a two-month long road trip. Now, if you want a copy of that, it's one PDF, we kept it nice and simple. It's just a step-by-step over the course of four years, things we did in our lives to be able to take a two-month long road trip vacation while having some passive income so we can make money while we were vacationing. Shoot us an email, go to our homepage at our website, you'll find our newsletter. Just fill out that, give us your email, and we'll send you a copy of that step-by-step guide. It's free. It's a great blueprint for someone looking to get into that right now. Now, I know four years can seem like a ways away. I mean, you could look at that and say four years, it was fast or four years, it took quite a long time. I mean, I know plenty of people that could have done that a lot quicker than us, and plenty of people that have not done that in the course of four years, right? It's a step-by-step guide, things we did. Yeah, check it out. It's the process we took to get where we are today, and we're happy to share it with you.   And if you have not already picked up a packet of Deliciaots, definitely, definitely check those things out. We've been consuming Delicioats for quite a while since our road trip in 2022, actually. They're super easy to make, and one of my favorite parts is there's no added sugar. They're tasty. It's basically just oatmeal in a pouch that you can pour water into, and you let it sit overnight. It's overnight oats, or if you wanna have it instantly, you can just pour some boiling water, cook it in the morning, or boil some water in the morning, pour it in the pouch, stir it up for a couple minutes, and then you're good to go. Fresh hot oatmeal. I'll put some in our smoothies, or sometimes in my yogurt, to give it some extra substance and flavor. But yeah, they are delicious, just like the name implies. Head on over to delishoats.com forward slash path, and use the code PATH at checkout to earn a discount.   But yeah, that about wraps it up today, guys. Let us know in the comments, or let us give us some feedback if you want to have these segments continued. We're happy to talk about our lives and kinda share things we learned along the way that have helped us travel, and ultimately our goal with this podcast and our website is to help you guys reach a travel goal. So if there's anything else you wanna talk about, drop us a message, give us an email. We're happy to chat about it.   And as promised, our next week guest coming up next Monday is gonna be Chris and Sarah. So they're from Chris and Sarah on YouTube, Chris and Sarah on Facebook, Chris and Sarah on Instagram, and chrisandsera.com, I believe. Really dynamic couple. They've been traveling for many, many years. All forms of travel. They've traveled Airbnb, van life, truck camper conversion. Think right now they're heading down the Pan American Highway in South America. So really fun episode, lots of information to talk about, and I'm excited to share that with you next Monday. As always, guys, if you wanna leave us a rating, interview, over on whatever podcast platform we're listening to, that would be very much appreciated. And until next time, you guys have a great weekend and we'll talk to you on Monday.

Episode 197: Payhip vs Shopify For Indie Author Direct Sales

The Pulp Writer Show

In this week's episode, we take a look at direct selling for indie authors, and compare the pros and cons of Payhip and Shopify as platforms for selling direct. This week's coupon code will get you 50% off the audiobook of DRAGONSKULL: BLADE OF THE ELVES (as excellently narrated by Brad Wills) at my Payhip store: 00:00:00 Introduction, Writing Updates, and a Reader Question Hello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 197 of The Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is April the 19th, 2024, and today we are talking about the pros and cons of Payhip and Shopify for direct sales by authors. Before we do that, we will do Coupon of the Week and some updates on my current writing projects. I have some questions from readers and will discuss what I did to celebrate publishing my 150th book. First up, Coupon of the Week. This week's coupon code will get you 50% off the audiobook of Dragonskull: Blade of the Elves (as excellently narrated by Brad Wills) at my Payhip store. That coupon code is SPRINGELVES, spelled SPRINGELVES. As always, the link and the coupon code will be in the show notes for this episode. This coupon code is valid through May the 14th, 2024, so if you need a new audiobook for spring, we have got you covered. Now let's have a look at my current writing and audiobook projects. Wizard-Thief, as I mentioned in last week's episode, is done and is out on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited and is selling quite strongly. Thank you very much for that. Now that it is out, my main project is Cloak of Titans, the 11th book in the Cloak Mage series. As of this recording, I am about 34,000 words into it, which puts me on Chapter 7 of 24. I think the final book length will end up being about the length of Cloak of Embers, which was about 110,000 words. Once Cloak of Titans is finished, my next project will be Shield of Darkness, so I will finally be getting to the second book in the Shield War series, which will be a follow up to Shield of Storms from back in January. If all goes well, I think Cloak of Titans will be out in the second half of May, maybe towards the start of June. I'm hoping to have Shield of Darkness out shortly after that, probably towards the end of June. I have also started working on the sequel to Wizard Thief, which is Half-Orc Paladin. That will come out after Shield of Darkness is done, hopefully not too long after Shield of Darkness is done. So that will probably be around the middle of July or so. So that is what I'm working on for books for the next couple of months. In audiobook news, recording is underway for Ghosts in the Veils. That will once again be recorded by Hollis McCarthy. I have Brad Wills working on the Tales of the Shield Knight anthology, which once it's in audiobook, I'm going to sell it as a bundle on Audible and Amazon and all the other usual audiobook stores. I will also be giving away short stories individually for free from that collection in my newsletter, so that is once again a very good reason to sign up for my new release newsletter. Leanne Woodward has agreed to narrate the second book in the Half-Elven Thief series, Wizard Thief. If all goes well, that will probably happen in June. And also in June, CJ McAllister will be narrating the second book of the Stealth and Spells Online Series, formerly known as Sevenfold Sword Online. So that is where I'm at with my current writing projects. Now we have one question from a reader that is not connected with our other segments. It's from Robert who asks about the Half-Elven Thief series: is this series available in paperback? I'm pleased to say that yes, it is. Both Half-Elven Thief and Wizard-Thief are available in trade paperback. Probably the cheapest place to get them is on Amazon, but I have expanded distribution for them so you should be able to buy it online from a variety of other stores. 00:03:43 Celebrating Book #150 As I mentioned previously on the show, Ghost in the Veils was my 150th book. Thank you for reading, everyone. Quite a few people asked how I wanted to celebrate, the implication being that I wanted to take a trip or something like a cruise, that sort of thing. However, with all respect to the cruise industry, if I wanted to catch norovirus, I could do it much closer to home for far less expense. However, I have established a precedent for celebrating major book milestones like this. Way back in 2019, Dragontiarna: Knights was my 100th book and to celebrate that milestone, I got a Nintendo Switch, which was the first dedicated video game console I had used since 1998 or so. Given that six months later COVID started, that turned out to be a wise purchase because suddenly I had a lot more time for video games. I got to beat a bunch of games I never had time to finish otherwise back in the ‘90s, like Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers 3, the original Castlevania trilogy for NES, the Super Nintendo Castlevania games, Super Metroid, and I finally finished Skyrim. It wasn't all a retro nostalgia trip because I did finish a few newer games on it as well, like Metroid Dread and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I recently had one of those numerically significant birthdays that are divisible by a large number, so I commemorated that occasion by getting an Xbox. It is a fine game console, but the problem with the Xbox was unlike the Switch, using the Xbox monopolizes the television. I finished the original Halo trilogy on Xbox and Skyrim again, but the whole Xbox monopolizes the television thing was kind of a difficulty for finding time to play it. But then a new device came to my attention: portable monitors. Obviously, most monitors are portable depending on size, but this new sort of monitor is basically a laptop LCD panel with a kickstand. It runs off a USB-C connection for power and you can connect a device to it with a USB-C or mini HDMI. Overall, these portable monitors tend to weigh about as much as an iPad in a case. They were basically intended for business travelers, since they fit easily into a laptop bag and then you can have a dual monitor set up with your laptop while you're on the road. However, it also connects just fine to an Xbox. If you can hold a laptop comfortably in your lap, then a portable monitor is about one third of that total weight. I moved my Xbox over next to the couch, connected it to a portable monitor, and have been using the Xbox that way. It is really quite exceedingly comfortable. Since I've beaten Skyrim a couple of times now, I need to decide on a new long-term game, which is why Question of the Week will be what it is shortly. So the “too long; didn't listen” version was celebrated my 150th book with a sub-100 dollar portable monitor off Amazon. It's really quite enjoyable and thank you for coming along for all 150 books. 00:06:35 Question of the Week It quite naturally segues into our Question of the Week. This week's question: what Xbox Game should I play next? No wrong answers, obviously. The reason I asked this particular question is because I keep defaulting to Skyrim or Halo when I play an Xbox game and would like to try something different. My leading candidates so far are Starfield, Witcher 3, and Dragon's Dogma 1. As you might have expected, this inspired many comments. LG says: I'm glad to hear you're an Xbox player, too. I like to separate my work/study computer from my gaming space, so having the controller plus TV in another room works well for me. Revenant 2 is my new favorite game. It jumped forward in my “to play” list when Halo Infinite's campaign wasn't personally feeling right. This game has got fantastic narratives, brilliant variety, exciting exploration, and frequent boss fights, it's souls-like but forgiving, the level/combat/gear systems are great, and there's a totally viable offline/single player mode. Justin says: We are a Nintendo family. Not quite 30 years ago, the PlayStation came out. Amid whining, I had the kids vote on what platform we would stick with. There is no way our entertainment budget could handle more than one. The most complaints have been missing out on the Metal Gear franchise, so that's my vote. Malcolm says 150 books. What an amazing feat. Congratulations. I feel like I've been on the journey with you, having read every book you have written and every series. I particularly enjoyed any book with Ridmark and Calliande and like Dragonskull, the next generation of Arbans. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the Demonsouled books, wasn't so keen on the Cloak and Ghost crossovers, but still a good read. Whatever you do, enjoy this landmark. Have fun. To answer the question, I do not usually play video games, but one that did catch my attention and play through all of them is the Dragon Age games. MacKenzie suggests Red Dead Redemption. The graphics hold up remarkably well. It's astoundingly clear for a Rockstar game and has an amazingly authentic feel to it. I'm not even a huge Western fan, but there's something extremely relaxing about riding out of town into the desert to hunt varmints. I think that is probably why so many people will go hunting in real life. Michael says: Starfield is a great game, but no modding yet on Xbox. Perry says: I haven't owned a console in over a decade, nor have I played any of those games, but my preference would be for Witcher 3. James says: How does Baldur's Gate 3 not make the list? Best game I've played maybe ever. David says: Fallout 4 was fun. Mark says Witcher. Starfield, I found to be slow to start with. I play Skyrim over and over again. I kind of do that as well. You can always mod Skyrim if you have the anniversary edition and haven't already. Robb says any car racing game. Juana says Witcher 3. Martin says Witcher 3. Becca says Witcher 3. So there are many votes there for Witcher 3. William says Hogwarts Legacy. Jake says: I honestly can't recommend any games, no matter what platform they come in. Xbox, PlayStation, Atari…just not worth it anymore. So I'd skip the games and write a book, maybe continuation of the Silent Order series. That's my vote. Thank you for that advice, Jake, I suspect it might be a little self-interested, but I appreciate that. Next one is from Michael, who says next Xbox game is called: buy a PlayStation. Barton says: only played Witcher 3 out of those, but it was engrossing. Bobby says Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy are both enjoyable as well as Jedi Survivor. And finally, Jim says: Child of the Ghost. Wait…not a game….yet. Thank you everyone, for all the suggestions. I think what I'm actually going to do is I'm going to try Starfield because that comes with Game Pass and I have Game Pass already. If I don't like that, I will I probably start Witcher 3 because I got that one was on super sale like last year for something like 10 bucks and so it's been sitting in my account and I haven't played it. But if I try Starfield and don't like it, I will switch over to Witcher 3. If I don't like Witcher 3, maybe it'll be time for Baldur's Gate 3. 00:10:40 Main Topic: Shopify vs. Payhip for Direct Sales for Writers But as much as I enjoy video games, I enjoy writing more and this is not a video game podcast. This is The Pulp Writer Show, so I think we should segue over into talking about an actual writing topic. This week's topic is comparing Shopify and Payhip for direct sales or as a direct sales platform for indie authors. And before we dig in, I should have a disclaimer. As you may know from my frequent mention of it on this show, I use Payhip quite a bit and that's how I do my direct sales. That said, I am not sponsored by Payhip. I don't get any stuff from this, whether financial benefits or an affiliate program, that kind of thing. I haven't used Shopify, but we did look into it quite a bit for the show and any opinion I express on this podcast is my own and not influenced by either Shopify or Payhip in any way. All right with that out of the way, let's dig into the topic. First off, why do direct sales? We should probably define that first. Direct sales is when an indie author sells a book using an ecommerce platform like Payhip or Shopify or Gum Road or a bunch of others without going through one of the big stores like Amazon or Apple or Google Play. So why do this? You get a greater cut of the profit than through ebook stores, whereas on a platform like Amazon, you max out at 70% of the sale price is what you get as the author. On direct sales platforms, you can potentially get nearly everything minus credit card fees and platform fees, which is higher than any of the other stores offer. You get paid faster. If you make a direct sale from the author, the author gets the money almost instantaneously, depending on their payment setup. Freedom/control. This is the big one. There is a lot of freedom in doing your own direct sales. It is a lot of work, but then like all forms of freedom, it is often quite worth it. It's much easier to run sales or issue coupon codes, as you know if you listen to the show regularly. Every week I give out a different coupon code for a discount on my Payhip store. It's also very good for people who want to sell online courses or memberships, which is not something I'm interested in doing. People who are interested in doing that usually need to employ an online sales platform such as Shopify or Payhip rather than trying to sell it on something like Amazon or eBay. There are a couple of things to note about trying direct sales. There is quite a bit of learning curve since you have to set up the store yourself and that involves a lot of clicking and uploading and so forth. You also need to learn about things about like Value Added Tax, shipping, file delivery services, etcetera. And if you are selling in the United States, you also have to be careful you comply with whatever these sales tax laws are for your jurisdiction or for where you're selling in the United States. Direct sales don't count towards ranking on other platforms, if that's something that's important to you, if you want your book to be a number one category bestseller on Amazon, direct sales will not help with that. It does take a bit of time to set up and maintain, and it also takes time for readers to get used to it and will not likely be a large portion of your sales, especially at first, since users tend to stick to the platform where they already have built up a library. This is one of the reasons why the Steam game platform is so dominant, because it's been around for a long time and a lot of the users have very big Steam libraries, so they're not super keen on jumping to a different distributor. Readers will need a carrot not a stick to get them to try a new platform, which is one of the reasons why I do those coupon codes all the time. So now to the actual nitty gritty of Payhip versus Shopify. We can sum it up quite neatly by saying it this way: Payhip is primarily designed for digital products. Shopify is primarily designed for physical products, but both are capable of selling either physical or digital products. Shopify allows for greater analytics and customization, while Payhip has a great basic service that keeps the costs low. So in terms of pricing, which costs more? Payhip pricing has three tiers. There is the free tier, which you pay obviously $0 per month and then Payhip takes 5% of each transaction. There is the middle tier, where you pay $29 USD per month and Payhip takes 2% of the transaction. Then there is the top, most expensive tier, which costs $99 USD per month and Payhip takes 0% of the transaction fee. Obviously, you would only consider that tier if you were making more than $1,200 USD a year in direct sales. Shopify does not have a free tier. At the basic tier, it costs $39 USD per month and Shopify takes 2.9% + $0.30 USD per transaction. At $105 USD per month, Shopify takes 2.6% + $0.30 USD per transaction. At $399 USD per month, Shopify takes 2.4% + $0.30 USD per transaction. We can see that with Shopify, you are already going to be paying more out the door. If you're just starting with direct sales, it might make more sense to start with the free tier on Payhip and then look at more costly options on either service as your needs grow and if you need the additional, more expensive features. So let's look at the pros on Payhip. The biggest pro on Payhip is low bar to entry in both terms of cost and in terms of technology needed to create a basic storefront. I've been doing direct sales on Payhip since 2021, and it's a very simple platform to use. There's a little bit of a learning curve, but it's not a huge one compared to something like WordPress or Adobe Photoshop. As we mentioned, the lowest tier plan is free but with a 5% cut of sales. The Pro plan, the top tier that we mentioned earlier, is $99 USD but then there are no transaction fees. It can handle UK/EU Value Added Tax automatically unlike Shopify because Payhip is based out of the UK, so that is built into their platform. Payhip also has some handy features that Shopify doesn't or that Shopify doesn't offer without like a plug-in app, that kind of thing that Shopify offers: settings for selling online courses, memberships, affiliate marketing, and a referral system. When I have had to contact Payhip about some sort of tech issue, I've always found their customer support to be very fast and responsive. As I mentioned before, I'm not being paid to say that. That is just my own personal experience. The pros for Shopify are basically for more advanced users, I think. $29 USD a month for the lowest pricing plan and then plus a cut and plus a transaction fee, that can add up if you have a lot of transactions. I think Shopify is really aimed more toward more advanced users than someone starting out with the basic ebook store on Payhip. However, to be fair, you do get a lot of stuff for that money. Shopify has an advanced website builder feature with more customization options on the pages. It has much more advanced SEO and analytics tools than anything Payhip offers. It is very useful if you're selling physical products. It also offers features to support delivery of physical items, such as customized shopping options based on location. More third-party apps or third-party payment options are available through Shopify (for example, Amazon Pay or Apple Pay). Shopify does offer a lot of customization and it does have a pretty good app store, where if there's a feature that Shopify doesn't have, there's a pretty good chance you can find one of the apps in their store that will sort of offer bolt on functionality for the new feature that you are looking for. So, in conclusion, if you want to do direct sales as an indie author, should you use Payhip or should you use Shopify? And as so often in these cases there is no right answer, there is merely the tool that is best suited for your needs as an indie author and a small businessperson. If you want to be able to heavily customize the site, Shopify offers more options for that than Payhip. If you are primarily selling digital products like I am, then Payhip offers better value, because you can just go with the free tier and still make more money than you would selling for the same price off Amazon. Since I don't really at this time have any interest in selling physical products online, Payhip it is. That said, if you do want to sell printed books or your own merchandise direct, then Shopify is the way to go. But if you don't have any of that kind of stuff and you still want to keep your shop costs low, then Payhip is probably the better option for you since you can use their free tier. So that is a look at Shopify versus Payhip and if you are thinking about direct selling as an indie author, I hope you have found that helpful. So that is it for this week. Suzanne (SewRunKnit) turned me onto a new NY Times Game that's in beta: Strands. My friend Marta messaged me to show me that her eldest son, Roc, has taken up crochet and made a little stuffed animal. How to own the power in your differences What does it mean to grow up as ‘other'? Whether it's due to being biracial or mixed race and never feeling like you fit in or it's because you don't share the same interests as other members in your culture, it's totally normal to feel like you don't belong. Triggered AF is joined by the CEO and Founder of The Curvy, Curly, Conscious Movement, wellness influencer and meditation enthusiast, Shelah Marie. Growing up as the only black woman in her household presented a set of challenges that helped Shelah develop a sense of curiosity and wonder, ultimately leading to a yearning for more … more play, more answers, more freedom. Shelah shares everything from advice on the one thing white parents should NEVER say to their black children to why she decided to create a safe space for black women. It's not enough to just be weird or different, you should amplify your quirks and the things that make you ‘other' — it's your superpower. Tap into this week's episode to learn how you can attract your tribe and create a family that accepts and loves you exactly the way you are. KEY POINTS & QUOTES: Ego and selfishness in moderation can be a good thing. Don't ever say “I don't see race” to your biracial children as a non-black parent. It's  better to be a part of “salad” than it is to be in a “melting pot”. Amplify everything that makes you not fit in. It will become your superpower. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

In 1995, Deputy Sheriff William Hardy was shot while moonlighting at a Birmingham hotel. An informant told police the shooter was Toforest Johnson. Even though ten people saw him in a nightclub at the time of the crime, detectives believed they had their man. But after Yolanda Chambers's statements were discredited, prosecutors turned to Violet Ellison who said she overheard Johnson confess on a three-way phone call. Years later, even the prosecutor has doubts about the so-called “earwitness” and whether Johnson should be on Alabama's death row. From the producers of “Bone Valley” comes “Earwitness.” Host Beth Shelburne picks apart the original investigation, police conduct, and the credibility of the key witness. What does it say when even the people who put an innocent man on death row can't get the justice system to right a wrong?OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "EARWITNESS" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 9 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: It's a small turd after all.

Sonia C. is back in Europe and she took a train to go see her grandchild, but in a moment of exhaustion, she ended up falling asleep, missing her stop, and woke up on a completely unexpected adventure. Sonia C.'s spirit was definitely forcing her to slow down and not be in a rush this week!    This week's theme is about: Periods of transition and uncertainty.    Highlights: Have you noticed an agitated energy or vibe on the planet lately? [2:45]  We have a tendency to want to have a solution during times of tension or uncertainty, but sometimes that's an impossible request. [8:30] What do you do when you're dealing with an unconsciously racist person? [14:05]  The spirit is always looking for what is beautiful and what is working. [19:40] What's the most beautiful thing in front of you? Look for it. [24:05] Sonia C. has got some exciting news! [28:15]  Tool of the week. [25:35] Question of the week. [33:55]   Sonia C. has been getting major vibes lately that the planet is in high agitation. There's just a lot of unsettled undertones and movements happening that she can't quite pinpoint to a specific outcome, but she knows it's there. Sonia T. understands completely. She feels lucky that more and more people are waking up their unconscious mind and are more open to feeling these invisible vibrations, but unfortunately, there's still a lot of people who are not conscious of them.    Sonia T. understands that when she is feeling undertones of tension in the world, she can almost misdirect the root cause to something like a weird interaction with the haircut guy, or the security guard, or the person at the grocery store, for throwing her vibes off. But through a deeper awareness practice and recognizing the signs over the years, she realizes that this certain tension that is being carried is actually much bigger than that and it's not always related to the day-to-day. Sometimes the universe is just in a transitional process.    Tool of the Week: Don't get sucked down the rabbit hole of negativity.    Continue on Your Journey:   Question of the Week: It feels like my prayers are answered from my guides, but then digging deeper I realize it's not the case. How can I stop feeling disappointed by the outcome or blessings? I'm starting to not trust my guides and instincts.    More Sonia Choquette at www.soniachoquette.com More Sonia Tully at www.soniatully.com Connect with Sabrina at www.sabrinatully.com Join Sonia Choquette's Vibe Tribe Follow Sonia Choquette on Instagram Follow Sonia Tully on Instagram Buy Sonia and Sabrina's Book You Are Amazing Ask your intuitive questions at: itsallrelatedpodcastquestions@gmail.com Masterclass: You're Glorious Life by Sonia Tully Book a Discovery Call with Sonia Tully Protecting Child's Intuition PsychicYOU Fall Class Level 1  Pre-Order Sonia Choquette's New Book Share with us your questions and vibe stories at itsallrelatedpodcastquestions@gmail.com and vibecheck@soniatully.com

High Performance Mindset | Learn from World-Class Leaders, Consultants, Athletes & Coaches about Mindset

We all receive tough feedback and we can easily take it personally. In this episode, Dr. Kamphoff shares three strategies on how to receive feedback and find wisdom in the feedback.  Remember that what people do and say is about them and not about you. When you receive feedback or criticism, ask yourself, "What about this person would make them give feedback in this way?" Next, if the feedback is really bothering you, ask yourself, "What does this tell me about what I believe about myself?" And then, use the learn, burn, return strategy to move on.   This Week's Power Phrase: “I find the meaning in the feedback I receive.”  This Week's Quote of the Week: “It takes humility to seek feedback. It takes wisdom to understand it.” - Stephen Covey

Only a few weeks after that episode was published, Russia invaded the Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, catalyzing the first war on European soil since World War II. Only three weeks ago, NATO gained their newest member of the alliance, Finland, with the hopes of ratifying Sweden's membership soon.  This week, we bring David back on to discuss how his position has evolved and changed alongside the war in Ukraine, and how NATO is responding to the ongoing crisis. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures.  New Company Announcement: Today, Jeff Hilimire and an all star team are announcing their newest venture: Purpose Group. Purpose Group buys, holds, and grows purpose-driven businesses. Over the years, while leading Dragon Army as CEO, Jeff Hilimire has written several books focused on values based leadership styles and he's applying these lessons and frameworks to the companies purchased. The types of businesses Purpose Group is looking to acquire include the following characteristics: enduringly profitable with a minimum $1M of EBITDA. Over ten years in business and within a 6-8 hour drive from Atlanta. We put a link to the new and fresh website in the show notes.   New Product of the Week: Tip Top Proper Cocktails just released a new product that you can now find on Delta flights across the world: an espresso martini. In partnership with Counter Culture Coffee the espresso martini joins the Tip Top's Old Fashioned, Bee's Knees, Negroni and more as favorite selections for your next flight. We interviewed Neal Cohen last year on The Atlanta Story if you're intrigued on learning more about the company's origin story and more.  Raise of the Week: It was just announced yesterday in TechCrunch. Lavender has raised $13.2M led by Norwest Venture Partners. Will and Will, the co-founders presented their product in the more recent Atlanta Startup Convo if you want to see it live. Their product is an AI sales email coach. When sales reps write emails, Lavender's software ensures the highest probability of replies by suggesting the best content and copy which increases sales cycles and closes more deals. Check out their free trial today.  This week it was announced, Charlotte based, 2U Laundry raised $20M led by Level 5 Capital Partners. Just over 18 months ago, 2U Laundry made a major shift when it began focusing on brick and mortar locations calling this product LaundroLabs. The strategic change is paying off. Hypepotamus covers the story well. Congrats on Alex and team as they expand LaundroLabs to new cities and gain new customers.  Company Coming Up: This week it was announced Recess, a fast casual restaurant with two locations in Atlanta reached QSR Magazine Top 40/40 for 2023 of America's Hottest Startup Fast Casuals. Erik Goranson is the CEO and Recess promises food that makes you feel good and I concur. They have several healthy grain bowls, salads, and green bowls. We love the concept of fast, healthy, casual in the Atlanta Ventures office and Recess is making major moves in the industry.   Companies Worth Applying To: SoftGiving is hiring for several roles most notably influencer recruiters, an internal recruiter and trainer, and a junior data analyst. SoftGiving, headquartered in Atlanta, raises millions of dollars a year for charities across the country by hosting live events through Twitch by partnering with major influencers and activating fan base donations through their live engagements. I know that sounded like a lot, but imagine a Twitch influencer who has tens if not hundreds of thousands of fans who watch their live stream. Now overlay a charity fundraising event and voila, you have SoftGiving. Now SoftGiving is evolving their offering and providing this service for major brands to connect with an audience historically difficult to get in front of.   One of Atlanta's most active venture funds, Knoll Ventures, is hiring a Business Development Associate to increase their go-to-market motions including sourcing early stage venture opportunities, attending conferences, conduct market research and more. Andrew and Rich have been mainstays in the investing community for coming up on a decade and this will be a career enhancing position for whoever makes the cut and wants to make a significant impact on focused and nimble team. Check out the the LinkedIn Job Opening in the shownotes. They are headquartered on Georgia Tech's campus.  Lastly, AdPipe out of Athens, Georgia is looking for a product designer. AdPipe turns all your static content into motion first videos. Customers including Aflac, Caterpillar, and Stephenson Equipment use AdPipe to turn their existing video library into motion-first, click catching content. Keep an eye on the AdPipe team as they gain more steam and evolve into a full scale motion-first marketing platform. Apply today if you're a product designer looking for a dynamic product to work on.  Annnnd that is five minutes!   Links discussed:

Dan and I picked up my grandmother and my parents met us at my cousin's house armed with leftover trays of food from the Open House. Earlier in the day I was able to help transfer Florence into the guest room bed while Dan and some of the guys disassembled her bed to ready her room for a hospital bed. Then we took turns visiting with her, saying our goodbyes, eating dinner and being together. very time the door to her bedroom opened she smiled and said “I love that sound!” and then “I want you to keep doing that. Even after.” I reminded her its not like we could stop it. It was a hard day but made easier being all together. She passed on Wednesday.  Came home that day to flowers and a beautiful from card that in my daze, I never even saw until he came home and pointed them out! Mom made it through another 3 day round of Chemo. 2 more to go (one in late January & one in February) Getting back into yoga.  Date night with Dan.
