In June 2015, Lithuanian DJ/producer, Marijus Adomaitis, AKA Ten Walls or Mario Basanov, published a particularly vile Facebook post about gay people. Whilst I believe everyone has the right to free speech, this was a pre-determined concrete view that rubs against the origins of club culture, a culture he milks and profits from for a living. His ill-informed, niave statements led to much discontent being voiced in music and social media. He was rightly pulled from many festival performances but it’s too early to tell how much it has hurt his career. He will probably soon pop under a new producer pseudonym anyway.The trouble is, I loved his work under the ‘Mario Basanov’ monica. I actively sought out and bought the tunes and he’s had more than a fair share of airtime in our gay household. Now, I find it difficult to separate the man from the music, In 2015, three/four years after release, his bottom-heavy, dreamy deep house signature has been mimicked and replicated, dating it quickly. Maybe that’s why he started releasing under ‘Ten Walls’??Whatever, it’s time to draw a line under these great tunes, and ‘finish off Masanov’. I had a number of these future disco playlists bubbling away between 2010-2012. This session pulls together favourites from that era, and clocking in at over two and a half hours, it’s a pretty chunky one. To dial-up the pink and stamp some queer over his music, we open with a snatch from John Waters’ 1969 movie, Mondo Trasho. The night's invite had words on it like "intergalactic", "extraterrestrial" and "solar", and that's exactly how the music turned out! Big ups to the Parisian dancers in the house and to Thomas and Stacey Cortmanche, who just made it offical! Already a hero in his home country of Lithuania after winning producer of the year in 2011 in their annual music awards, Mario has gone on to champion the world. Mario rose to fame with his producing partner Vidis who together crafted a string of underground hits such as ‘I'll Be Gone’, ‘Who's Shot The Silence?’, and ‘Changed’ all becoming huge international phenomena. Swiftly followed by their debut artist album ‘Changed’ released to universal critical acclaim in February 2012. It was back in 2009 Mario revealed his love affair with a more sentimental Disco and Deep House sound. His first solo release came on the respected Australian imprint Future Classic, followed by the unforgettable Balearic sun infused ‘Caribbean Girl’ on UK label Under The Shade. The real turning points were his releases on Needwant, the deep piano stomper ‘Up’ and follow up Lonely Days, featuring Mario’s own vocals, are both just a hint of what Mario is set to achieve with his individual productions. Today Mario counts the likes of Solomun, Tensnake, Maceo Plex and Soul Clap amongst his music’s fans. His reputation has continued to balloon at the start of this year with sort after remixes for bands such as Metronomy and Crazy P, as well as a brand new single ‘We Are Child of Love’ featuring another two of Mario’s own reinterpretations alongside the original. It is not only Mario’s outstanding production that make’s people take note but Mario’s scope and versatility. He is just as comfortable producing a pop infused vocal as making tasteful underground dancefloor weapons. House, Disco and Electronica; its all there in Mario’s repertoire. His creativity and abilities show genres appear as names and not boundaries. Things are only set to get bigger and better for Mario in 2012. He continues to tour worldwide, both as Mario & Vidis and solo, taking in Brazil, Ibiza, London, Berlin along the way. A full solo album is penned and scheduled for the end of the year as well as releases on Nervous NYC, Needwant and Silence Music. We are just at the start of a long and exciting musical journey.

Mario Basanov's plastic has been firmly in our record bags for months here at Ketoloco.  His forward thinking take on the current disco-tinged house vibe is refreshing to say the least.  With high profile release's on Needwant and a superb remix of Hercules & Love Affair's hit 'Falling' last summer, Mario is flying and 2012 will be his.
