In 2020, a gastroenterologist in Glasgow did the math on his new research study and came up with 30,000 samples, arriving over two years from three cities and a dozen hospitals. He asked around about how researchers keep track of that. The answer was Microsoft Excel. Shaun Chuah had written some HTML by hand in Notepad back in high school and that was about the whole of his programming experience, so he opened the Django tutorial and started reading. Is Your Deck Safe? A Simple Inspection Guide -- Plus Basement Efflorescence and Paint Colors for West-Facing Rooms

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2026 38:52

Original Air Date: August 16, 2025 Re-Air Date: August 15, 2026 Episode Number: 471Episode SummaryFour topics this week. Dan opens with a segment on AI, the trades, and why professional painters are on the safe list of jobs that technology won't replace. Then a deck safety segment covering what actually causes collapses and a quick inspection checklist you can run through today. After that, a breakdown of efflorescence -- the white powdery stuff on basement walls that looks like mold but isn't -- including what causes it, why painting over it doesn't work, and how to actually fix it. The episode closes out a multi-week series on room exposures with a full guide to choosing paint colors for west-facing rooms, including eight to nine specific Benjamin Moore recommendations.Timestamps[00:00] -- Welcome and Preview[00:50] -- AI and the Trades[03:07] -- Why Painting Matters[07:11] -- Deck Safety Basics[10:03] -- Deck Failure Causes[14:08] -- Quick Deck Inspection[18:41] -- Basement White Powder[19:33] -- Efflorescence Explained[21:19] -- Fix Moisture and Repaint[24:47] -- West-Facing Color Guide[34:05] -- Best Colors and Samples[38:06] -- Wrap UpAI and the Trades [00:50]Dan opens with a Microsoft study ranking the top 40 jobs most at risk from AI and the top 40 considered safest. The at-risk list included customer service reps, writers, paralegals, web developers, and some programming roles. The safe list: caregivers, cleaners, roofers, pipe fitters, plumbers, plasterers -- and right in the middle of the mix, professional painters. The common thread across all the safe jobs is that they require hands-on work, real skill, human judgment, and a physical presence on site. No matter how capable the technology gets, it can't paint a house.Dan talks about his son Andrew, now in his second summer on a painting crew. He came in with no experience. Within a few weeks he was confidently working off extension ladders. By the end of that first summer he could handle almost anything thrown at him. What struck Dan wasn't just the skill -- it was something Andrew said about how satisfying it is to finish a job and stand back and see the actual before and after. A faded house that looks good again. That's different from the kind of satisfaction Dan gets at work, where some days it feels like moving digital ideas from one folder to another. The broader point: trades are going to keep requiring real people. Dan thinks the human touch is only going to become more valuable as more of the world goes digital. AI might help a plumber or electrician diagnose a complex issue, but somebody still has to show up and do the work. What Causes Deck Collapses [10:03]Deck collapses are genuinely rare -- the US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates around 6,000 injuries per year tied to deck, porch, stair, and balcony failures. But because decks are elevated, when something does give way, injuries are almost guaranteed. One of the most well-known incidents was a 2003 Chicago collapse where a third-story wooden deck gave way under a group of people. The weight brought two lower decks down with it. Thirteen people died and 57 were injured. The most common failure point is the ledger board -- the board that connects the deck directly to the house. If flashing wasn't installed correctly or has failed over time, water gets behind the ledger and starts rotting the rim joist it's fastened to. Once the rim joist softens, the bolts anchoring the ledger can pull free. The ledger can look completely solid from the outside while the wood it's bolted into is already compromised. In older decks -- especially those built before building codes were updated in the early 2000s following the Chicago collapse -- the ledger board may have been fastened with plain nails rather than bolts or lag screws. Over time those nails can loosen or rust, leaving a deck looking solid while hiding a serious structural weakness.Other common failure points:Railings that aren't fastened into proper framing -- these tend to fail when someone leans their full weight against themPosts that are buried directly in soil rather than resting on concrete footings, where they can rot from below without showing any visible signMetal connectors -- joist hangers, bolts, screws -- that are rusted, missing, or weren't installed correctlyA deck that looks perfectly fine on the surface can be hiding significant problems underneath all of these.Quick Deck Inspection Checklist [14:08]This takes 10 to 15 minutes and is worth doing today if you haven't done it recently. Ideally it's an annual spring task, but any time works.Walk the deck surface. Pay attention to how it feels underfoot. Do boards bounce or feel springy? Are any warped, uneven, or soft?Test the railing. Give it a firm push -- don't lean your full weight on it as the test, but put enough pressure to check whether it's solid. Wobbling or creaking means it needs attention.Check the ledger board. If you can get safely underneath the deck, look where it connects to the house. Is the flashing intact? Are there signs of rot, water damage, or staining on the house wall or the ledger itself? And look at how it's attached -- if you see only nails and no bolts or lag screws, that connection should be reinforced.Probe suspicious wood. A screwdriver or small awl pressed into any wood that looks questionable -- joists, posts, the ledger -- will tell you a lot. If the tip sinks in a quarter inch or more with light pressure, that indicates rot and warrants further investigation.Check the posts. Make sure they're sitting on concrete footings, not buried directly in soil. Look for cracking, shifting, or movement at the base.Inspect the hardware. Look for rusted or missing screws, nails, or joist hangers. Anything corroded should be tightened or replaced with corrosion-resistant hardware. If the deck is over 15 to 20 years old, or was built before the 2003 code updates, or if anything in the inspection looks questionable, bring in a licensed contractor for a closer look. And if the deck just needs a refresh -- cleaning and a coat of wood protector -- stop into any RepcoLite and they'll walk you through the right products.Efflorescence: The White Powder on Your Basement Walls [19:33]If you've noticed white chalky streaks or fuzzy white buildup on your basement's concrete block or poured concrete walls, it probably startled you a bit. It looks like something is growing. It's not mold. It's efflorescence, and it's actually pretty common. What it is. Efflorescence is salt deposits forming on masonry surfaces. Water moves through the wall, picks up mineral salts from the concrete or block as it travels, and when it reaches the surface and evaporates, it leaves those salts behind. Sometimes it's a light dusting. Other times it's streaks or crusty fuzzy buildup that looks pretty alarming. What causes it. Moisture. If you have efflorescence, there is a moisture issue somewhere. It could be coming from outside -- poor drainage, clogged gutters, improper grading around the foundation. It could be coming from inside -- vapor movement through the space. Wherever it's coming from, the moisture has to be addressed or the efflorescence will keep coming back.Dan's own situation: his house had no gutters, so rainwater poured straight off the roof at the foundation. Once he installed gutters, the moisture problem went away and the efflorescence stopped. How to clean it. A stiff brush and plain water handles mild cases. For stubborn buildup, a diluted solution of white vinegar or a masonry cleaner specifically formulated for efflorescence will get it off. Follow the label directions and wear protective gear -- some of these cleaners are acidic. The critical mistake to avoid. Cleaning is only treating the symptom. If you paint over active efflorescence without fixing the moisture source, the moisture and salt will continue working toward the surface and will bring the paint with them. Blistering, peeling, paint failure. Dan learned this firsthand -- he painted over it the first time thinking it might solve things. It did not. He had to deal with peeling paint on top of the original problem. The right sequence. Fix the moisture source first. Then clean the efflorescence completely. Then let everything dry thoroughly. Then repaint. For bare, never-painted concrete or block walls: WaterBlock from Insl-X is worth knowing about. It's a water-blocking product that, when applied to unpainted masonry under the right conditions, can prevent a certain level of moisture from working through the wall. Stop into RepcoLite and ask about it -- there are specific application conditions that have to be met for it to work correctly.Choosing Paint Colors for West-Facing Rooms [24:47]This is the final installment of a series on how room orientation affects paint color. Previous episodes covered north-facing, south-facing, and east-facing rooms. The challenge with west-facing rooms. They're cool, shaded, and a little flat in the morning -- the sun is rising on the opposite side of the house. By mid-afternoon and into early evening, dramatic warm golden light pours in, carrying strong amber and orange undertones. That subtle beige you loved at noon might look...

We also discuss their recent loan for purchasing ore-sorting equipment, the acquisition of Ben Nevis property, and the big-picture vision for the company's future growth into multiple mines and satellite areas across their district.   The Company has successfully developed at the 1045 level on a continuous 127-metre strike length of high-grade gold mineralization along the BK-9870 Vein, averaging 21.52 grams per tonne (g/t) gold across an average true width of 0.83 metres.  Terry outlines that these encouraging results provide further validation of Talisker's geological model, demonstrating increasing grade and improved continuity of mineralized structures with depth within the Mustang Mine. This was after the company had recently reported on previous results from the BK vein that returned a 60m strike length at 27g/t also on the 1045m level, and their team is pleased that lateral development at Mustang is returning results well beyond initial expectations. He mentioned they are awaiting upcoming assays from development on the 1105m level above and from the new 1030m level, 15m below the 1045.   Next we discussed the news out July 17th which announced that the Company has entered into a loan agreement with Two Shores Capital Corp. for a delayed-draw term loan of up to $11.0 million to fund the acquisition of ore sorting and processing equipment.  Terry mentions that they've already purchased the equipment, and some of the front-end crushing machinery is already showing up to site and then walks listeners through the timeline of final on-site testing of the ore sorting in the latter part of this year, and that it may impact run-of-mine material and show a significant reduction in waste rock as soon as H1 2027.   Additionally, we discussed the news out on July 13th that announced their acquisition of a 100% interest in the Ben Nevis property located contiguous to the Company's Bralorne Gold Project in southwestern British Columbia from Coast Copper Corp. The Property is strategically located south of the current Bralorne Gold Project and comprises 16 mineral tenure claims totaling 10,404.15 hectares. The expanded land package lies southeast along the strike of the Cadwallader fault system which hosts the Bralorne deposits. The new property expansion adds seven historic mineral occurrences and strengthens the Company's exploration position by increasing the Bralorne Gold Project to 24,000 hectares spanning a 40-kilometre long mineralized district.     If you have any follow up questions for Terry regarding Talisker Resources, then please email me at Shad@kereport.com.   In full disclosure, Shad is a shareholder of Talisker Resources at the time of this recording, and may choose to buy or sell shares at any time.   Click here to follow the latest news from Talisker Resources     For more market commentary & interview summaries, subscribe to our Substacks:   The KE Report: https://kereport.substack.com/ Shad's resource market commentary: https://excelsiorprosperity.substack.com/     Investment disclaimer: This content is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, an offer, or a solicitation to buy or sell any security. HEALTH NEWS   Analysis of 82 Trials Shows Black Seed May Improve Cardiovascular Risk Markers New Study Reveals Herpesvirus Infection May Accelerate Alzheimer's Disease Favorable lifestyle factors reduce dementia risk across key genetic profiles People are living longer, but spending more years in poor health Imbalances in the oral microbiome linked to symptomatic hand osteoarthritis       Analysis of 82 Trials Shows Black Seed May Improve Cardiovascular Risk Markers Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (Iran), July 21 2026 (Natural News)     A pooled analysis of 82 randomized controlled trials involving 5,026 adults has found that supplementation with Nigella sativa, commonly known as black seed or black cumin, is associated with improvements in multiple cardiovascular risk markers.   The meta-analysis, published in the journal Pharmacological Research, was conducted by researchers from several Iranian universities. The analysis used a GRADE-assessed, dose-response method to evaluate the effects of black seed compared with placebo or standard care.   According to the study, black seed supplementation led to significant reductions in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and body fat percentage. The analysis noted that daily amounts used in most trials ranged from 1 to 3 grams of ground black seed or 1 to 3 milliliters of black seed oil. According to the researchers, one teaspoon of ground black seed contains roughly 4 grams, meaning a single daily teaspoon stirred into food falls within the range used in studies. For those who prefer oil, a half teaspoon delivers close to 2 milliliters. The researchers emphasized that consistency, rather than a large single dose, appears to drive positive results.   New Study Reveals Herpesvirus Infection May Accelerate Alzheimer's Disease Cardiff University (UK), July 21, 2026 (SciTech Daily) In a new study, researchers found that herpesvirus infection intensified memory problems and other Alzheimer's-related changes in mice already vulnerable to the disease. The damage appeared to be driven not simply by the virus itself, but by the immune system's prolonged attempt to control it. Herpesviruses are a large family that includes viruses associated with cold sores, childhood infections, and glandular fever. After the initial illness passes, some can remain dormant inside the body and reactivate later, repeatedly drawing the immune system into action. Scientists results suggest that T cells, immune cells that identify and attack infected cells, can enter the brain during herpesvirus infection and accelerate cognitive decline. Following infection, large numbers of immune cells moved into the brain. Most were CD8+ T cells that specifically recognized the virus, showing that they had entered the tissue as part of the body's attempt to contain the infection. Similar T cells have previously been found in the brains and spinal fluid of people with Alzheimer's disease, although their exact role has remained uncertain. The results indicate that a virus-driven immune response can actively speed the progression of Alzheimer's-like disease rather than merely appearing alongside it.     Favorable lifestyle factors reduce dementia risk across key genetic profiles     Kyushu University (Japan), June 5 2026 (News-Medical) With dementia cases expected to nearly triple worldwide by 2050, researchers are increasingly focused on identifying ways to prevent or delay the disease. While lifestyle and health-related factors, such as blood pressure control and physical activity, influence dementia risk, genetics also play a major role. Currently, it is unclear if maintaining a favorable lifestyle reduces dementia risk equally across different genetic backgrounds. A new study led by Kyushu University examines whether favorable modifiable risk factors (mRF)-behaviors or conditions that people can change or control-can lower dementia risk even among individuals with high genetic susceptibility. The researchers analyzed data from 9,605 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older. They determined each participant's APOE ε4 genotypes, a primary genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, and calculated the mRF score based on lifestyle and health-related factors. This allowed the team to evaluate how genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices jointly interact to influence dementia risk. The results showed that dementia risk rose progressively with the number of APOE ε4 alleles. Notably, among individuals with one or no APOE ε4 alleles, maintaining a healthier profile with lower mRF scores was linked to a significantly lower risk of dementia. In contrast, among individuals with two APOE ε4 alleles, dementia risk did not differ significantly between those with lower and higher mRF scores. These findings suggest that maintaining favorable lifestyle and health conditions can effectively mitigate dementia risk, even among individuals carrying a single APOE ε4 allele. This underscores the importance of population-based prevention strategies focused on managing vascular and lifestyle risk factors.     People are living longer, but spending more years in poor health Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (US), July 21 2026 (Eurekalert)   People are living longer, but spending more years in poor health  The morbidity gap—the number of years people live in poor health—widened in nearly all countries, with wealthier nations facing the largest gaps.      The US has the largest morbidity gap, closely followed by Australia and Canada.   Women consistently live longer but spend more years in poor health than men.   Musculoskeletal disorders, mental health conditions, hearing loss, and falls and other unintentional injuries are driving most years lived in poor health worldwide.  Within a generation, the global morbidity gap widened by nearly two years, increasing from 8.8 years in 1990 to 10.7 years in 2023. Globally, people spent an average of 14.5% of their lives in poor health in 2023, up from 13.6% in 1990. Instead of occurring only in the final years of life, the widening morbidity gap was observed across the adult lifespan, suggesting that people are spending more years living with disease and disability throughout adulthood.  Between 1990 and 2023, global life expectancy at birth increased from 64.6 years to 73.8 years, while healthy life expectancy rose from 55.9 years to 63.1 years. In 2023, the United States had the largest national morbidity gap at 14 years, followed by Australia at 13.9 years and Canada at 13.7 years.   Imbalances in the oral microbiome linked to symptomatic hand osteoarthritis Central South University (China), July 21 2026 (Medica Xpress) A study published RMD Open has linked specific imbalances and disruptions in the oral microbiome to symptomatic hand arthritis. Its findings suggest that the microbial environment of the mouth may influence the disease process of hand arthritis, which is associated with pain, stiffness and reduced grip strength and can severely impair quality of life. The oral microbiome plays a role in systemic inflammation and interacts closely with the gut microbiome, which is significantly associated with symptomatic hand arthritis. To assess the role of the oral microbiome, saliva samples from 52 people with symptomatic hand arthritis recruited from a community-based osteoarthritis study and 712 people without the condition were analyzed using ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Compared with samples taken from participants without hand arthritis, samples from participants with symptomatic hand arthritis showed significantly lower oral microbial richness and altered composition. Specifically, the abundance of Trichococcus bacteria was significantly higher in the symptomatic hand arthritis samples and positively associated with the severity of hand arthritis symptoms. Trichococcus abundance in the oral microbiome was also positively associated with the gut microbial tyrosine metabolism pathway—a metabolic pathway previously implicated in hand arthritis. Samples from participants with symptomatic hand arthritis also displayed reduced oral-gut microbiome correlations compared with controls, suggesting the balance between these two microbial communities was disrupted.

In this episode of The Bigfoot Inquiry, Brian and Dr. Hogan Sherrow sit down with anthropologist and DNA expert Dr. Todd Disotell for a blunt, science-driven conversation about the search for genetic evidence of Bigfoot.Dr. Disotell has examined hundreds of alleged Sasquatch samples over the years, yet says he has never encountered DNA that supports the existence of an unknown North American primate. He discusses a recent UK eDNA case reportedly containing traces of Old World monkey and great ape DNA, explaining why the claim is unusual, why the raw sequencing data matters, and why extraordinary results must be verified by credible independent laboratories. The conversation also takes a hard look at the Melba Ketchum DNA study, including the problems with its methods, interpretation, and publication. Dr. Disotell explains what laboratories actually mean when a sample is labeled “failed,” “unknown,” or “inconclusive,” and why none of those terms should be presented as proof of an unidentified creature. They also explore the real promise and limitations of environmental DNA, the constant risks of contamination and weak chain of custody, and the collection standards required for a sample to survive scientific scrutiny. The discussion closes with a broader examination of why many scientists avoid the Bigfoot subject, how sensational claims damage legitimate research, and why eyewitness testimony can be shaped by misidentification, expectation, and the fallibility of memory. Email BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter?
