True Crimecast
Point Blank - Robert F. Kennedy

True Crimecast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2026 52:58

Just after midnight on June 5, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy stood at the peak of his political life. He had just won the California primary, flashing his trademark smile and telling a roaring crowd, "On to Chicago." Moments later, while cutting through a crowded kitchen pantry to avoid the crush of the ballroom, the trajectory of American history was altered by a .22 caliber revolver. In this episode of True Crimecast, John and Jamie trace the evolution of "Bobby" from a ruthless political operative to a voice for the voiceless. We break down the chaotic scene in the pantry, the capture of Sirhan Sirhan, and the chilling "diary of an assassin." But we also dive into the forensics that refuse to stay buried: the 13 recorded shots from an 8-shot gun, the powder burns behind Kennedy's ear, and the recent 2025 declassifications that are shedding new light on old shadows. Was Sirhan a lone actor, or was there a second gun in the kitchen? --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. SlapperCast Episode 366: "Don't Use Afrin" In this episode of SlapperCast, we dig into what it's actually like when a pub tries to survive (and thrive) through the biggest Irish day of the year, Texas-style. From the nonstop pressure and crowd dynamics to the behind-the-scenes decisions that can make or break the day, this one's a real look at the logistics and chaos that most people never see. And because we can't help ourselves, we also bounce into a bunch of other road-life territory, including a post-gig hang after Bullet Grill House in Point Blank, Texas, plus some tour talk and what we've got coming next. Also in this episode: • Bullet Grill House recap (Point Blank, TX) • Our upcoming Ireland tour talk

Great moody, almost electroclash esque analog gems. It's been interesting to see Rebotini's music come back around from the rave days through film scores to now without really changing much. No one does the nexus point of French House and EBM quite like him. 9 DJ Plant Texture - Life - Tresor RecordsThe first of two Tresor releases in my top 10, not sure what has been happening over there lately, but I'm here for it. A great weirdo techno 12 inch where opening track Repetitivo (Stretch Mix) sounding like Jeff Mills having eaten too many haribo, before mutating into scattered hats across the dancefloor, perhaps to trip up Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern who have broken into your house for some reason. 8 Autechre - Untilted - Warp Records Now to the first of two reissues in my list, and despite my somewhat negative thoughts as to their quote unquote live show I saw this year, I still love the music and this one in particular stuck out. Approachable but still properly mad. Proof that extreme computer music can be fun. 7 Clark - Steep Stims - Throttle Records I remember when Chris Clark came out with his first record and thinking that it too warp for warp records. I'm pretty sure we never met when I was in Berlin, unless I got him confused with Kid 606, in which case I apologize to you both. Anyway, Steep Stims is great, playful, emotional, one foot in the past and another in the future, really great work that I think will age really well. Solid work Mr Clark. 6 Emptyset - Dissever - Thrill Jockey Records Amazing new record from Emptyset, feels like they took all the lessons from all the later records and applied it to the earlier ones. Beautiful intense grinding drones, like someone built an installation of Sheer Hellish Miasma and I'm somehow in the room with it. 5 Merzbow, Iggor Cavalera, Eraldo Bernocchi - Nocturnal Rainforest - PAN Full disclosure, Iggor sent this to me, but it's been on my repeated listens ever since. Zen-like terror but incredibly dynamic. One of the best noise releases of the year and I'd go as far as to say a career highlight for each of the members. 4 Various Artists - 30 Years Sonic Groove - Sonic Groove Has it really been 30 years of Sonic Groove? Adam X compiles a collection of outstanding producers for this excellent collection of tracks. Highlights include the mutant acid of Bryan Zentz, the incomparable genius of Mike Parker and the industrial brutality of Statiqbloom. 3 Dopplereffekt - Metasymmetry - Tresor The second Tresor release on my list is the mighty Dopplereffekt. Beautiful, futuristic and unmistakably Detroit. Top 3 don't disagree! 2 Maria Somerville - Luster - 4AD Genuinely shocking to hear an artist on 4AD in 2025 that sounds like what an artist on 4AD sounds like in my head and it's great. Melancholic Ambient shoegaze for a new generation. 1 Coil - Black Antlers - Dais Records Black Antlers is not my favorite Coil album, but it is the one I least expected to be reissued as it was originally a tour only CDR that then got expanded. You could argue that it might not count as a proper Coil album, but who has time for these discussions. Some of the best music ever created. Nick (Disfigure; the one on the right in the pic) Favorites: Kommodus - A Foetal Wolf in Stained Glass - Probably my favorite release from Kommodus. Really awesome auxiliary instruments incorporated here and I like the unhinged melodic leads thrown in on a lot of the songs. It has a punkier tinge to it with the guitar tones and the vocals are equally as heavy Fellwinter - Dark Mediaeval Art - Pure riff-centric Judas Iscariot worship Magus Lord - In The Company of Champions - Epic in every way. I liked this better than the Lamp record this year but M has been writing fantastic black metal for a while and this side project is really refreshing to follow Ultimate Disaster - For Progress . . . - Perfectly written D-Beat in my opinion. Very tight songwriting and the riffs and solos are so well executed Valen - Viarum - I'm a huge Thangorodrim fan and this project has reminded me most of that. This was my go-to Dungeon Synth for some epic game nights this year Enceladus - Demo II - Another great release from this project. I love the half time parts, the more death metal sounding vocals, and just the ferocity of the songs while still being melodic Iron Firmament - Arcane Overspill - Amazing black metal from Washington, a state known for churning out amazing black metal for over two decades. I really love the production on this release, especially the interludes. This band writes amazing riffs and this has been a standout for me in their already exceptional discography Sharp Pins - Balloon Balloon Balloon - I love Power pop, I love Guided By Voices and Sharp Pins delivers on all fronts Occult Blood/Carrion Bloom - Battle Cries of Endless Night - Both sides of this split are fantastic. Put out by Wergild who can't miss lately with their bands/releases Utility - S/T - The hometown heroes! The whole release but especially the first song reminds me so much of Fired Up, one of my favorite CT hardcore bands of all time. Great songwriting and also absolutely on point with the energy and vocals. The demo before this is fantastic as well     The Redscroll Podcast is a monthly show (first of the month going forward) that works as a companion to what we do at Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT USA. We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss upcoming releases and what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk about upcoming area musical activities. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll@gmail.com).

John Boorman's Point Blank (1967) has long been recognized as one of the seminal films of the sixties, with its revisionary mix of genres including neo-noir, New Wave, and spaghetti western. Its lasting influence can be traced throughout the decades in films like Mean Streets (1973), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Heat (1995), The Limey (1999) and Memento (2000). Eric Wilson's compelling study Point Blank (British Film Institute, 2023) examines its significance to New Hollywood cinema. He argues that Boorman revises traditional Hollywood crime films by probing a second connotation of “point blank.” On the one hand, it is a neo-noir that aptly depicts close range violence, but, it also points toward blankness, a nothingness that is the consequence of corporate America unchecked, where humans are reduced to commodities and stripped of agency and playfulness. He goes on to reimagine the film's experimental style as a representation of and possible remedy for trauma. Examining Boorman's formal innovations, including his favoring of gesture over language and blurring of boundaries between dream and reality, he also positions the film as a grimly comical exploration of toxic masculinity and gender fluidity. Wilson's close reading of Point Blank reveals it to be a film that innovatively inflects its own generation and speaks powerfully to our own, arguing that it is this amplitude, which encompasses the many major films it has influenced, that qualifies the film as a classic. Eric Wilson is Professor of English at Wake Forest University, USA. His publications include Secret Cinema: Gnostic Vision in Film (2006) and The Strange World of David Lynch: Transcendental Irony from Eraserhead to Mulholland Dr (2007). His writing has featured in Psychology Today, L.A. Times, The New York Times and Huffington Post. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. Ep. 207 ~ Kyle & Hannah - West Texas Showdown, 1st & 2nd Overall

For the past five years, the Texas Showdown Series has been slowly, inevitably, drifting west. We started in the dense, pine-soaked forests of East Texas, moved through the rugged limestone of the Hill Country, but the destination was always clear: Big Bend. Few landscapes in the world capture the heart and soul the way West Texas does. For those willing to push themselves to the edge, something different waits out there—something ancient, indifferent, and extraordinary. In the world of ultra-cycling, that "something" takes the shape of the West Texas Showdown. The WTS doesn't just test riders. It strips them down. It pushes them to their limits and then, without apology or sympathy, asks for more. Out there, the desert becomes your only companion—its silence broken only by your groans, your breathing, and the steady reminder that you are very far from comfort. And the numbers tell the story: only 32% of the field finished the course. In the Showdown category, the desert claimed all but three riders. Fifteen started. Three rolled into Terlingua. Despite the brutality of the route, the racing was electric and equally unrelenting. A small but mighty group battled back and forth across the miles, creating genuine, edge-of-your-seat dot-watching. It wasn't clear who would take the win until the final stretch, and by then everyone—riders, spectators, and the desert itself—had given everything they had. When the dust settled, here's who was left standing: 1st — Kyle Gilbert — 2d 5h 44m 2nd — Hannah Simon — 2d 16h 17m 3rd (DFL) — Robert Shine — 2d 19h 33m These three deserve every ounce of praise and recognition—not just for surviving the desert, but for putting on one hell of a race. Everyone who was out there knows how hard they had to fight, and they earned the respect of the entire field. On today's episode, I sat down with Kyle and Hannah in the back of DogSpeed Cycling in Austin, TX to talk all things WTS. At this point, they are the leading experts on the event, and we went deep: strategy, equipment, tire choice, water management, drop bags, preparation—you name it. Whether you're thinking about tackling WTS or you just want to hear two incredible humans break down an unforgettable ride, this episode is for you. On a personal note, hosting both Kyle and Hannah at their very first ultra-cycling race back at ETS 2021 was one of the highlights of my time in this community. Seeing them return nearly five years later—stronger, wiser, and standing atop the WTS podium—was a full-circle moment that I'll never forget. I couldn't be prouder of these two, and I have no doubt they'll keep pushing boundaries and inspiring others along the way. --------- The party starts again at the 6th Edition of East Texas Showdown at the Bullet Grill in Point Blank, TX. Need to know: - March 27th-29th, 2026 - Registration Open now - Showdown (395 miles), Slowdown (275 miles), Lowdown (160 miles) - NEW FOR 2026 we're introducing a Gravél option. The Trident: Leadership Lessons from the Battlefield to the Boardroom This week, Marcus, Melanie welcome an extraordinary warrior, leader, and encourager—Jason Redman, retired Navy SEAL, bestselling author, and one of the most respected voices on resilience and overcoming adversity. Jason served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, including 11 years as an enlisted SEAL and 10 years as a SEAL officer, leading combat operations across the globe. His career is a study in grit, redemption, and relentless dedication—from early deployments in Central and South America to commanding SEAL teams in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Jason's life shifted forever on September 13, 2007, when he was acting as Assault Force Commander during a mission in Iraq. An enemy ambush erupted. Jason was shot eight times, including a devastating gunshot wound to the face. His team fought through, secured the target, and saved his life. What followed was a recovery few could imagine: 40 surgeries, months in the hospital, and a battle not just for survival, but for identity, leadership, and purpose. Jason didn't just recover—he returned to active duty and continued serving until retirement in 2013. His courage, valor, and leadership earned him the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Valor, and the respect of warriors around the world. Why This Episode Matters Jason Redman has become one of the most powerful voices in America on resilience. His life is proof that the human spirit can rise, rebuild, and lead again—no matter the setback. Whether you're fighting through a personal battle, searching for purpose, or simply need a reminder of what true grit looks like, Jason's story will challenge, encourage, and strengthen you. In this episode you will hear: • The very first book I bought about the SEAL teams - I was in a truck stop and there was a case of books you could buy for a buck. There was a book about SEAL operations in Vietnam. Four years later, I checked into SEAL Team 4. (6:22) • I was about 95lbs and 5' tall at 15, and that recruiter took one look at me, and was like: “You are not what the SEALS are looking for.” (7:40) • There are way more operational opportunities for enlisted SEALS than there are for officers. (20:44) • Seaman to Admiral takes individuals who don't have a degree. They send them to school. It's an accelerated program. You're part of the ROTC program. You commission out of that and you come back as a SEAL officer. (24:02) • We were all bleeding so bad, and it created this mist in the helicopter of blood. The entire inside of the helicopter was coated in blood. (43:06) • My recovery time took 4 years and 40 surgeries to put me back together. (43:38) • Be thankful for the hardships you have in life and for hard things that happen because I think they set you up for success in other things. (43:48) • Me failing as a leader was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to come back from. (43:56) • Lead yourself, Lead others, Lead always. (44:39) • [Marcus] When he was in the hospital, he wrote on a bright orange piece of paper and tacked it on the door. And he wrote this letter saying “Don't come in here feeling sorry for me. I will overcome.” (48:48) • It's amazing when you're around Christians who have a appreciation for the world and a love of Christ and a love of humanity. (51:07) • These are questions I like to ask veterans: “What do you want to accomplish? What is your American dream? (53:52) • Whether you're starting your own business, or you're a leader in a business, we need you. This country needs you. The underworld is crowded with thieves, but Parker has always stood apart. Created by Donald Westlake in the early 1960s, the character has been portrayed on screen by actors including Lee Marvin, Mel Gibson, and Jason Statham. He's a blunt-force professional who isn't Bond, isn't Batman, but something rougher, hungrier, and coded by his own ruthless blue-collar sense of order. With "Play Dirty," filmmaker Shane Black takes his own crack at Parker, bringing the character to Prime Video on October 1 and casting Mark Wahlberg in the role. The film follows Parker, a ruthless thief, and his expert crew who stumble onto the heist of a lifetime that pits them against the New York mob. The film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, and more. This version doesn't come with gadgets or acrobatics. Black describes a Parker who thinks fast, hits harder, and feels closer to the blue-collar world than to the spy fantasy. It's the kind of material that lets him indulge his taste for pulp grit, sly humor, and the holiday backdrop he's made famous. But it also opens the door to some bigger questions: what draws audiences to men this uncompromising? How do you make crime fun without sanding off the edges? And what happens when you cast Wahlberg instead of Robert Downey Jr.?READ MORE: ‘All Of You': Brett Goldstein On Love, The Science of Soulmates, ‘Shrinking' Surprises, & ‘Ted Lasso' [The Discourse Podcast]Writer/Director Shane Black joins The Discourse to talk about the journey of bringing his Parker film to the screen, which started all the way back during the making of Black's first film, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2005. When asked what itch hadn't been scratched by earlier adaptations, Black pointed to Parker's uniqueness. “Each one represents the era in which it was produced. 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin is a very specific film for that time period. And each actor who's played Parker from there on, like Robert Duvall, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson in "Payback." There has been a history of incarnations of this powerful, relentless character. But he's not James Bond, which is why I liked him. He's sort of blue collar. It's almost like an American entrepreneur's story. But he happens to be a really awful, bad person and a criminal anti-hero.”

Matty Libatique: the NY of Highest 2 Lowest, Caught Stealing

The Cinematography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 26, 2025 72:47

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 326: Matthew Libatique, ASC Cinematographer Matty Libatique, ASC, has had a productive year. Shortly after moving to New York, he began work on Spike Lee's film, Highest 2 Lowest. Immediately after wrapping that project, Matty prepped for Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, and then, following a short break, he collaborated with Bradley Cooper on Is This Thing On? (which releases in December.) He found it fascinating to explore New York City through the lenses of three distinct directors, feeling privileged to shoot three New York-centric movies back-to-back. The New York depicted in Highest 2 Lowest and Caught Stealing are starkly different, depending on where people from different socioeconomic backgrounds live. Both films effectively convey the diverse realities of living there. "When you look at both films, separately, you have a feeling of New York, you feel like you're living in New York inside of these films," Matty explains. "And it's because the directors live in New York and have grown up in New York." During location scouting with both Lee and Aronofsky, Matty noted their deep familiarity and emotional attachment to where they chose to shoot. He feels that movies faking New York locations lack the inherent authenticity of shooting in the real city. Highest 2 Lowest is a reinterpretation of the Akira Kurosawa classic, High and Low. Matty used High and Low as an influence, even though Lee was not making a direct adaptation. He found the Kurosawa film helped him see the hierarchy between the affluent and the poor, and the literal rise to the top of a hill by the wealthy industrialist from his humble origins. These themes became the seed of his visual inspiration. In Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel Washington's record executive David King inhabits a high-rise, literally looking down on the world from a high vantage point. The film is intensely character-driven, and with a large ensemble cast, Matty often shot with two to three cameras per scene. The film used an actual exterior of the Olympia building in Dumbo, Brooklyn while the crew shot on a volume stage set for the interiors. Matty found shooting on the volume stage and working with Unreal Engine to create the background images for the penthouse set to be the most challenging aspect of the shoot. It demanded far more advance planning and preparation to perfect the background images than the production schedule allowed. He had to make early, calculated decisions and plan far in advance for shooting the plates that would be used as the backgrounds. Spike Lee frequently incorporates various film formats in his movies, and Matty saw an opportunity to use both a 16mm and a new KODAK Super 8 film camera once the action in Highest 2 Lowest shifted outside the controlled apartment environment. He use both the 16mm and the Super 8 on the subway and in scenes of the Puerto Rican Day parade, also combining them with different film stocks. Lee cut between these distinct formats, which made a sense of heightened chaos. Matty says, “It was just an effort to create chaos, you know, and having the unmatched visual images cut together to sort of just mimic a chaos around this character.” Caught Stealing recreates the New York City of the 1990s, with Martin Scorsese's After Hours serving as a major reference. Matty felt that the character Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) needed a distinct look to articulate the story. He thought about the rust-red tint of the Lee Marvin film, Point Blank, and used a Camtec Color-Con2 to deliberately bleed red color into a few key scenes. Even though Caught Stealing is entertaining and full of action, it was important to Aronofsky to tell a strong, narratively-driven story, with performance and character making the sequences as exciting and brutal as possible. “Like all Darren movies, there's a construct, there's a box, he sets up the architecture of the film,” Matty says.

Episode 614: Built from Scratch: Chris Moran on How Bullet Grill House Became a Lake-Town Anchor

Wil sits down with Chris Moran, owner of Bullet Grill House in Point Blank, Texas—an hour north of Houston by Lake Livingston. Chris traces a winding path from teenage shifts at Big Boy to Pizza Hut GM postings across the Midwest, a pivot into automotive/oil & gas, and a “nights-and-weekends” stint at Ted's Montana Grill that rekindled his hospitality bug. In 2019, he and his wife built Bullet Grill House from raw land—doing much of the interior themselves, debt-light by cashing out savings. After a strong first summer, COVID hit; they pivoted fast to curbside, takeout, and discounted beer/wine to-go—ironically exceeding February sales in April 2020. Since opening, they've posted year-over-year growth.Chris walks through lessons learned: keep operations simple and reliable (including moving back to Schedulefly), obsess over service consistency, and keep a close eye on vendor pricing. He's grown the space with “McBullets,” a hidden-door Irish-style speakeasy room, and leverages their 4.4-acre lot to host the East Texas Showdown bikepacking event that brings 200+ riders each spring. While expansion is tempting, he's focused on protecting the “mothership,” staffing depth, and community hospitality that turn first-timers into regulars.Key Takeaways Nonlinear path pays off: Early chain experience + manufacturing “lean” mindset shaped Bullet's processes. Built, not bought: They acquired raw land and did much of the buildout themselves, staying (initially) debt-light to survive the early years. COVID pivot that stuck: Curbside + discounted beer/wine to-go drove April 2020 sales above pre-shutdown February and introduced future dine-in guests. Simple > shiny: Switching away from Schedulefly for “bells & whistles” backfired; they returned to what's stable and staff-friendly. Watch your vendors: Distributor pricing can drift—tight, ongoing monitoring protects food cost. Staff for service, not just cost: Slight overstaffing can be a strategic advantage in remote markets and for guest experience. Grow inside your four acres: Added a speakeasy-style back room (“McBullets”) and use back acreage for events/camping/overflow instead of opening a second unit. Anchor community events: Hosting the East Texas Showdown (180–380 mile routes) fills the lot, sells serious calories, and cements local relevance. Brand clarity matters: Shifting perception from “biker bar next door” to full-service family restaurant took intentional service, menu, and messaging. Cautious about expansion: Protecting the core location and culture outweighs the allure of a second unit right now.

Les, Kurt, and Jason are celebrating… healthy prostates (and Jason's Birthday)! Blac Chyna is celebrating a healthy split from her fiancé. And the guys are collectively celebrating the budding romance of Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson! But, there's thing not being celebrated: the Hallmark Movie Moriah's Lighthouse. Despite the presence of Luke Macfarlane, this movie is a snooze fest filled with a bunch of likeable people that needed a better plot onscreen rather than the plot that happened offscreen in the past in a dungeon. With no Light Bright, no Lesbianism, and no consequences for smiley faces, this movie will stop you up like two loaves of bread.    Bluesky: lifetimeofhallmark Facebook : lifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Threads: lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast TikTok: lifetimeofhallmarkpod Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com
