This episode is particularly important. We heard in the previous episode (042 with Scott Reeves) how one of the biggest issues faced in the greenkeeping industry is recruitment. Well, fortunately Bledge's much better half Jenny Bledge is out there working on a solution. First Green is a wonderful initiative that BIGGA has brought over the Atlantic from the GCSAA. It's all about introducing golf, and particularly careers in this part of the golf industry, to school kids of different ages. There are few couples out there who have contributed more to the greenkeeping industry than Lee and Sami Strutt. Lee, a previous guest on this pod, is the Director of Agronomy at Cabot Cape Breton. Sami has spent over 30 years working for the greenkeeping association, BIGGA. She joined the association in 1993 as an admin assistant but is leaving it in 2024 as its' Chief Operating Officer for a new role as Education Director at the Bernhard Academy. Lee and Sami discuss not just their remarkable careers, but how they have been able to manage and work as a couple against such demanding and varied roles. JT The Bigga Figga is a legendary rapper, producer, record label owner, and entrepreneur from San Francisco's Fillmore District. While incarcerated as a juvenile in the early 90s, he decided to enter the emerging independent Bay Area rap scene. Despite successfully self-distributing his first demo tape, JT was rejected by In-A-Minute Records. This pushed him to start his own label, Get Low Records, which quickly became a successful entity to push his own albums as well as projects by the Get Low Playaz (San Quinn, D-Moe and Seff The Gaffla). As JT became better at marketing and promotion, he linked up with Master P during his time in Richmond and took his music nationwide. Over the course of his career, he's linked with industry heavyweights such as Jay-Z and Nas. Dave Weiner's quiet power has helped to form hip-hop history as we know it. He has set the pace for independent success from behind-the-scenes. The Los Angeles native turned an entry level job in the mailroom of Priority Records into an explosion of rap music history. As he grew into West Coast Sales Representative, he presented the concept of the distributed label to Priority—signing a label as the company would an artist. The distributed label blueprint was the first of its kind with the 1996 signing of Master P's No Limit Records. From 1997 until 1999, Dave's distribution deals were duplicated and revenue from these partnerships skyrocketed to over 300 million dollars. He went on to head Interscope-distributed JCOR Records and consulted for various labels before becoming Vice President of Strange Music in 2009. There, he and his team led the company to becoming “the most successful independent rap record label in the industry” with multiple RIAA certifications and Top Five debuts on the Billboard Top 200 completely outside of the system. During this time, Tech N9ne released 19 albums that all charted Top 10 on the Billboard Top Albums chart, giving him the title of “most Top 10 albums on the rap chart in history.” Once again, Dave was at the forefront of developing a groundbreaking industry prototype which would soon be known worldwide as Strange Music. This model would be emulated by independent labels globally. Even 31 years into his career, it still feels like the beginning for Dave. “It comes back to hard work and hustle,” he leaves off. “I'm honored to work with artists who remain true to their vision without compromise.
