Do you like Dancing?"

I'm going to say it now: this is *the* preeminent Hip-House mix! DJ Spinna produced this clean, thorough all-vinyl mix in Late 2003/Early 2004 for a short-lived but very cool Japanese boutique Tube Records that specialized in CD DJ-mixes. This was part of mix series Spinna did for the imprint, released on CDR in very limited batches now impossible to find both irl and online. Mine is boxed up in storage back East, same with Spinna's - but thankfully my old friend Mas Yamagata had it and ripped it including the artwork. The artwork was all done by hand by with pens/paints and layout by Forest Stearns, an old college buddy of mine who was a big part of the Humboldt art scene at the time. I can recall Spinna asking me if I knew any artists and Forest did a lot of live-art shows at hip-hop jams and from '04-'06 all in all we'd collaborate on 5 different mixes and covers called 'The Basement Archive Series'. Mas sent me the files from the original CDR which sequenced the DJ mix individually track per tracks (27 in total). I really wanted it to play as one continuous mix for the podcast so the homie Monk One aka Andrew Mason then offered to turn it into one long track, which is how you'll be enjoying it. I had to dig deep to ressurrect it and I know it'll be worth your time! This is super high energy 1990, 91 NYC club tunes. Mixed incredibly well on all records owned by DJ Spinna. "It sounds crazy, but I always had older people around me. I was one of the youngest in my crew of guys that I came up with, and they got into it, and that got me into it. Also, that's another genre of music that was kind of around us, it was in the air, it was big. It was underground, but there were records that managed to cross over into mainstream radio. You heard it, it wasn't like some thing that came out of nowhere, it evolved from disco, and I'm a disco kid, and all disco is sped up soul music. They call music disco's revenge because they tried to kill disco off in '79 [The “disco sucks” demolition night when thousands of, mostly white, people burned disco records in a huge bonfire at Comiskey Park in Chicago before a White Sox game], house music became the way for people to express themselves all over again. It was sonically a little different, but it all came from a foundation of soul and disco music. And then I got a chance to experience the Paradise Garage [the legendary New York dance music club where house music evangelist Larry Levan DJ'ed] when I was 16 years old. They didn't serve liquor, so I was able to get in as a member. It was magical for me, that was probably my first real club experience. I got to hear the best sound system, and the best DJ in the world, which was Larry Levan. Also, Larry played hip hop in the club." - DJ Spinna
Girl Glitch--Spinna night bags by Jasii Carter & Crystal Simone
Editering: Tommi Ranta
Once again, thank you for tuning in all these years, for I appreciate each and every one of you that take the time to listen and spread the good word. Seems like more and more local djs are willing to incorporate House Music in their sets, and maybe one day we can convince our local radio stations to let us spin on Sundays & Holiday Weekends. (Looking at you Magic 95.5!) September 2019 marks an entire year of spinning at The Royale Cigar Lounge, where I love to spin Lounge and Soulful House music on Friday nights. I hope a mix such as this encourages more people to accept this type of vibe in the coming years in Columbus, Ohio. If you dig the mix, stay tuned for more in the very near future, and feel free to leave a comment. Peace! In the words of one of the baddest, funkiest bass players around, Mr. Verdine White, "Earth Wind and Fire is more than just a band, it is an energy force". Please take a listen above as Baby K interviews Verdine and gets some insight on the mighty musician and one of the most influential and uplifting bands of all time! After the interview we present an exclusive 90 plus minute EWF tribute mix made for us by the one and only DJ Spinna! No one does a tribute quite like Spinna, known for his legendary Stevie Wonder "Wonder-Full" parties (which Stevie himself has attended!) and his remix and DJ work with Stevie along with his Michael Jackson and Prince tributes. Truly a fire mix befitting the legendary band! May this episode uplift and bring you as much joy as we had making it! Check out EWF on their 2054 tour with CHIC in a city near you!

Living in the seaside republic of Venice for 20 years, WISEACRE initially established a successful career as a commercial/fine art photgrapher. in 2003, he decided to pick up some vinyl, a couple of turntables, a mixer, two speakers and a few friends in order to begin the labor of love we call “throwin’ parties”. since this time, wiseacre has put his love for photography on hold and co-created three very successful LA parties, FUNKY IN THE MIDDLE, CUSTOM SUNDAZE and now theLIFT which after one year is expanding to san francisco and new york . he has hosted and played along side such talents as GILLES PETERSON, DANNY KRIVIT, BONOBO, NICKODEMUS, LOUIE VEGA, JOE CLAUSELL, OSUNLADE, BLACK COFFEE, MARK FARINA, MR. [I]t's official: Julius the Mad Thinker will be performing in Manila on Saturday, January 28 at TIME. In our opinion, this is the year's "must-see" event. Few DJs have an effect on an audience the way Julius the Mad Thinker does. I first heard about Julius when I ran across his name in 2004 on the site UndagroundArchives.com, the authoritative guide to New York City's house music scene (today no longer operational), run by Donna Ward (a.k.a. Fotochick). The site hosted the annual Choice Awards celebrating the scene's top players, from artists, DJs, and producers, to clubs, record labels, events, and reporters. That year, Julius had been recognized as Best Emerging Talent, and Donna wrote about a great interview she had with him and described him as smart and mature. The following year, I was invited to attend the 4th Choice Awards in NYC. Everyone who was anyone was there: Danny Krivit, Quentin Harris, Jovonn, Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan (Blaze), Lisa Shaw, Anane, Stephanie Cook, Jada, and Andre Harris, to name a few. Awardees included Louie Vega, 718 Sessions, Deep House Page, Shelter, Roots, Bruce Tatum (Time Out NY), Cordell Mcclary. I was invited to present the award for Best DJ International, and the winner was Jojo Flores for the 4th year in a row (someone I had just met in Manila the year prior in 2004). Jojo was in South Africa at the time and his buddy E-Man accepted the award on his behalf (someone I met along with Jojo here). To say that being on stage in front of all these stars--I had only read about up until that point--was surreal would be the understatement of the year! Julius may very well have been in the crowd that night. In 2009, I was going to visit Chicago for the first time with Ines--who had lived there before I met her, and a DJ friend Joe DiPadova, who was going out with Ines' best friend years ago, recommended that I look up Julius once there. Joe was at the time living in Montreal and working with Jojo Flores. I remembered that Jojo was at the time the Montreal resident of a group of DJs called 3Degrees Global, a group co-founded by Julius the Mad Thinker 10-years ago. Once in Chi-town, I reached out to Julius and he recommended we meet at Evilolive (a palindrome). We finally met and he introduced us to Jamie326, Gene Hunt, and many of the people organizing that after-hour industry night. How's THAT for 3 degrees of separation?! The next time we saw Julius was in Manila about a month later. It was a bit of a surprise and his first time there. He came to attend a friend's wedding along with Tiesto. We hung out for about a week and got to know him much better. He came to our night at the Mandarin Oriental MUSIC & WINE, we took him to M Cafe, and he performed at Embassy on his last night. He even recorded a mix at my place that he ended up featuring on [MUSIC & WINE Radio]. (You can scroll down to find it.) Julius recording the mix "Traffic" at my Makati City pad. Also seen dancing, Channel St Claire Julius invited us to participate in the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami (me as DJ and Ines as co-host) at the Mi Casa pool-party opening the annual conference. It's amazing how many people in the global house scene we met in the matter of a few days. We have been trying to find the right time ever since to bring Julius back to Manila. Well, the stars are finally aligned and Julius will at long last be back in town to perform, this time at the city's number one dance club TIME. The Mi Casa pool-party at WMC 2010. Elian Habayeb, Julius the Mad Thinker, Zepherin Saint (Tribe), ALA (Dive San Diego), Hallex M (United Music), Keith Evan (House Society), and Nathan Adams (Tribe). With the hopes of adding the Philippines to his roster, Julius, along with hundreds of music enthusiasts are preparing for the incredibly explosive 4th annual Mi Casa Es Su Casa Holiday season to start March at the WMC 2012 in Miami and ending October 4-7 in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. This is the Thinker's annual birthday celebration, not yet published on his Soundcloud page. It's titled Celebrate and it's a real banger. Here's probably some of what you can expect on Saturday the 28th. Click link to access the invite, enjoy the sounds, and here's the tracklist: 0:00 - 1. One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk) This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed. To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series. Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you? Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowski, DJ Spinna, Rae & Christian, Esthero, Groove Armada (remix of A Tribe Called Quest's Description of A Fool), Roots Manuva, Ty, Jurassic 5, Bjork, Niko, RJD2, The Nextmen and more. http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?51655
