Robert Dietz - You're So Hood Biography: Talk about house music and its impossible not to talk about Japan’s Satoshi Tomiie. Since starting out in the late 80s he has been one of the scene’s most important and influential figures who has crafted endless dancefloor anthems as well as turning his hand to more pop inclined work, headline DJ sets around the world and all the while staying as relevant as anyone in the game. And it all started in Tokyo clubs during Satoshi’s youth, where he was forging himself a great reputation as a talented DJ in the early days of house. Also a lifelong student of jazz and classical piano, Satoshi soon started producing and had a huge impact right from his very first record. The debut single ‘Tears’ - co-produced in 1989 with Chicago’s ‘Godfather of house’ Frankie Knuckles - was an instant club hit and is today considered one of house music’s most important moments. Soon after, Satoshi relocated to New York City to get fully involved with the exciting early 90s electronic music scene. It immediately paid off, and because he was an accomplished musician as well as dexterous DJ, Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame) asked Satoshi to join him on his tour, and the rest is history. Since then, this auteur has forever been honing his musical ability before retuning to the studio once more. Throughout his career, international stars likes U2, Mariah Carey, Photek, Simply Red and David Bowie have all been remixed by Satoshi who has an ear for groove like few others in the world today. Of course, all the while Satoshi has continued to release seminal albums and tracks like Full Lick and Love In Traffic, records that showcase the man’s unique take on dark and twisted electronic rhythms, tortured vocals and generally hypnotic sounds. Satoshi runs the well-respected SAW.RECORDINGS imprint with Hector Romero, and together the pair have continued to refine and reinvent the Chicago and New York house blueprint for more than a decade by championing the up and coming who are now established international talents of acts like Nacho Marco (whose recent Blackmail EP received widespread acclaim), Guy Gerber, Audiofly, Luca Bacchetti, Doomwork, Tuccillo and Guti. Like Satoshi, the philosophy of Saw is about quality underground dance music, not quantity. Having taken something of a time out to rebuild his studio, Satoshi is now back with a vengeance. This year will see Satoshi release a plethora of new projects, including a collaboration between Satoshi and Brooklyn's Joeski (called Satoeski), a remix of Stelios Vassiloudes & Tomomi Ukumori's 'Green In Blue' on Bedrock Records, collaborations with Matthias Vogt and Iori Wakasa (an up and coming DJ from Tokyo), and finally a new artist album and singles from Satoshi solo. Satoshi hasn't slowed down on the DJing front either, and continues to play week in, week out at some of the best clubs in the world such as Womb in Tokyo and Pacha Buenos Aires. His Pop Up Party series, that features Satoshi playing all night at small, intimate clubs is also proving to be popular. Recently Satoshi launched his own podcast series that sees Satoshi showcase the music he is into currently. This year, is set to be yet another landmark in Satoshi’s career, as it will see the release of his new artist album, no doubt full of the electronic delights that we have come to expect from a man who is an essential voice in the global house music conversation. www.instagram.com/satoshi_tomiie www.twitter.com/sawrec @satoshitomiie

The Bloody Beetroots - All the girls(No Artificial Colours Rmx) Biography: “The decks, the disks, the cd and other in the hands of a good dj, are good instruments, the important is to know how to use them in the best way! These elements can become for the dj, as for a good musician, a great orchestra. That’s why today also a dj can ride the classifications with the pieces realized, remixed and produced by him and because the youngs cram to one of his dj set as once only for a rock concert happened. The dj is the new star! Besides also Brian Eno had foretold this in the distant year 83 saying: ” the musician of the future will be the dj! ” A philosophy of life at the base of the profession of the dj always accompanied by a good musical taste, ear, humility and above all passion in these words it is picked the opinion of Flavio Kirilli. Flavio, since from childhood, has been a lover of music and of what rotates around it; he starts to move his first footsteps when he was 16 buying the first console, then growing ,he continues his walk “putting disks” practically in the best clubses of the region. After sometime, he learns to discover and to interpret the different musical tastes of the people, the way to make amuse them and to transmit emotions. After different broadcast experiences he comes to Ciccio Riccio (one among the most important radios in Puglia), where for a few years he succeeds in spreading his sound to the thousand of listeners of the station; meanwhile the evenings increase and he succeeds in affirming him also out of its region (but he has to do a lot more). In 2002 he decides to move definitively to Riccione where all the time there are the most important clubs of Italy. Here finally the dreams become reality, after having worked at the Echoes – Liz and to the Byblos and Pascià. For different years he works to one of the shops of disks more important of Italy, where he enriches his musical culture and strengthens his knowledges with the best exponents of the house panorama national and not only. In 20 years he has worked in hundreds of clubs in Italy and to the foreign countries, among the most meaningful: Matis (Bologna), Divinae Follie (Bisceglie – Ba), Nafoura (Castellaneta Marina-Ta), Fellini (Milano), Dna (Ginosa Marina – Ta), Miu’ J’adore (Marotta-An), Chalet delle Rose (Bologna), Des Alpes (Madonna di Campiglio – Tn), Vanilla (Siena), The Door (New York – USA), NiteFlight (Leibnitz – Austria), Fiesta Club (Bruxelles – Belgio), Penthouse (Copenhagen - Denmark) and so many others… He has worked with sacred monsters of the music, artists of world calibre with which he have had the pleasure to share both the professionalism and the friendship. “It is enought look at them working to understand that from them there is always to learn ” he says with humility… Consequence of his success and his back-ground musical, as natural professional growth, Flavio from 2006 starts to compare him with the job of remixer and record producer. Between a dj set and another, with friends dj and musicians he moves in different recording studies where he is working at his new tracks.... (185) Shinedoe for m2o radio (www.m2o.it) 11 05 2014

Biography: Her real name, Chinedum, is Nigerian for ‘God is leading me’. In the world of Shinedoe, god is music. As if she’s completing a trilogy, the album is a sleek representation of her musical history, a rich tapestry that has spanned releases on the likes of BPitch, Cocoon and Get Physical as well as her own imprint, Intacto. A tour de force of highly organic dance music bringing together the energy of club material alongside more thoughtful and introverted songs, ‘Illogical Directions’ is exactly the album you’d want Shinedoe to make. Starting with the sultry, dub beats of ‘Release Yourself‘ and the mechanical house infusion of ‘Essence’, to the deep jazzy house of ‘Alto Parisio’ and the dark and twisted ‘Discourse My New Romance’ featuring The Knife’s Karin Dreijer, for Shinedoe, the third time’s a charm. An exploration of sensations in sound, Shinedoe deftly delivers anthemic tracks such as the single ‘Circle Of Life’ featuring the infectious vocals of Miss Bunty as well as exploring the darker and more gritty world of ‘God’s Love’ and ‘Get Dirty’. “When I produce music, it comes from my heart and soul”, she explains. “As a result, these new tracks all have their own feeling and identity, you can’t label them to one particular sound. It was a challenge bringing them together, but it works!” This release marks a decade of her infamous Intacto imprint, the label she founded with 2000 and One that has launched and pushed the career of many notorious Dutch artists such as Lauhaus and Anton Pieete. A full world tour for the label will follow in September 2014.

His first gig was in his hometown – Bologna - at one of the most famous and renowned club of Italy: Il Cassero Club. There he took part in the annual dj competition where he won the award as “Best Emerging Dj Of The Region”, gaining his residency in the club. Soon he started performing all over Europe, from Napoli at Minimalismi to Barcelona, and of course in Bologna at the Club (Selecta Night). More recently, he has played a series of acclaimed gigs at famed clubs such as Amnesia Milano, Bizzarro Roma, Club T and Il Muretto, beside successfully managing and promoting his party in Bologna called Frame. Today he runs Rebus Club along with its owner, where he hosts a weekly Sunday night party. Always charmed by the minimal sounds, he started producing his own music later on. Matteo was featured on the second ever Memento Records ep after the first one by his friend and colleague Fabrizio Maurizi (aka Roger), and has released “The Classmate”, the only full-length album on that label so far. Matthe’s style is uncompromisingly based on techno sounds, where the beat plays the biggest part and gives a unique feeling to the tracks, moving from the darkest atmospheres to the funk style, as a tribute to the all-time influence and importance of Detroit’s legacy.

Carl Craig - At Les Biography: Ask any well-known DJ, artist or producer the secret of their success and chances are that hard work will be pretty high up their list of essentials. Anyone who knows Anna Wall will know that this is one of the many characteristics that defines her, and now, after years of working her way up the underground ranks, it looks as if years of graft are starting to pay dividends. Since first getting to grip with decks at the age of 19, Anna has developed a reputation and keen following in her native London and university town of Newcastle. Playing classic and contemporary house and deep detroit techno with a strong affinity with the roots of both, Anna’s broad knowledge of the history of dance music sets her apart from the hundreds of unimaginative, chart-championing DJs that plague the scene. Anna’s international break came in 2011 when she was recruited as resident DJ for Croatia’s Yacht Week, spinning for an epic 7 days 7 nights. Since then, she has been booked alongside some of the world’s most respected DJ talents, with the last few years seeing Anna DJ in the impressive company of MK, Robert Owens, Norman Jay, Inland Knights, Soul Clap, Adam Shelton, Jordan Peak, Santé, Matthias Kaden, the list goes on... Anna played for one of Mixmag’s first ever DJ Lab's on location at their penthouse in Miami alongside techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson and Miami’s own Treasure Fingers; an incredible achievement in its own right and one about which she is extremely proud. Anna spent her season last summer in Ibiza, playing clubs such as the world famous Space Ibiza for Future Disco alongside Carl Cox's The Revolution Unites every Tuesday, plus trips back to her hometown to play Warehouse LDN, and Watergate in Berlin. This year, her first solo EP is finally complete and with a collaboration with #1 most charted artist of 2013 on Resident Advisor: Sidney Charles in the works for Santé's Avotre imprint, be sure to keep your eyes and ears on this lady...

Actually school friends Jakob Seidensticker and Henrik Raabe had started a band called "The Havana Boys" some years ago and where kind of a house-band for the famous Mojo Club in Hamburg. While playing another gig in the holy halls Florian Schirmacher, already famous with projects like "Glowing Glisses", jumped the stage and just hit it. And so Wareika took off. The very first release is called "Men Village" (2008 Connaisseur Rec) and demonstrates the deep influence of Jazz music and wobbly dub-sounds that all three musicians are heavily into. Definitely no need to mention King Tubby or Sun Ra. It also showcases the musical education that all three artists enjoyed from an early age on. Henrik Raabe studied guitar, drums and piano, Florian was educated in singing and the piano, while Jakob can master a fretless bass and plays all kinds of percussions. Besides this classical and high level education Jakob and Florian are also very much into djing and they know their club-roots and a lot about Techno, House and all sorts of contemporary club music. So the high versatility of styles in their music takes no wonder. Their productions including, three albums, several single releases and more than a dozen high-profile remixes on different labels like Tartelet, Perlon, Circus Company, Future Classics, Eskimo and many others are ranging from Balearic to deep Techno, jazzy House sounds and from Balkan-Jazz to dubby riddims. Wareika are always maintaining their smart intellect, depth and dynamism in all compositions. It ́s a bright and dazzling kaleidoscope of melodies and polyrhythmic or four to the floor beats that is entirely unique in the electronic worldwide circuit and you can may be label their music with the term Jazz-Not-Jazz or even better Techno-No-Techno. Whatever you may call it, it ́s deep and atmospheric but it never misses the groove! When it comes down to live gigs the trio is very keen on defining a quality and outstanding sound and always play 100% live. Definitely no computers on stage! Due to the fact that they are playing mainly in Club venues they beef up their sounds. And even though they are definitely not your average club heads band, they still get the masses raving and dancing to their sets that can endure up to 3 hours...
Jakob Seidensticker (MPC arrangements, effects, mixing) Florian Schirmacher (vocals, keyboards and percussions) and Henrik Raabe (guitar, percussions and vocals) are playing in venues all around the world from London to St. Petersburg, from Miami to Oslo and from Tokyo to Brazil. Itʼs always thrilling to see Wareika on stage as Techno-marries-Jazz improvisers, while they are recreating their recorded masterpieces like „Kingʼs Child“ (2009 Motivbank) or „Harmonie Park“ (2010 Perlon) into something completely new, or just improvise and create things unheard so far. Many of these stage-born songs are now captured on vinyl and CD, forming their fourth full-length album „Wternal“. It will be out on Visionquest in October 2013.

 12. Oliver Deutschmann Breakdown Caduceus Records Biography: Quenum is an extraordinary individual. A professional breakdancer that was raised in Africa, he found love in London in the 80s through mastering the art of DJing to early electronic music and broke into the spotlight as Acess58 in the 90s before forming the Cadenza label with Luciano in 2003. His debut album ‘Face To Face’ is deliriously deep and melancholic, rhythmically complex and gives a fragile new voice to techno. Across the eleven original tracks, Phillippe Quenum exudes a graceful temperance creating tracks that flutter and take flight (indulge in the soothing hihats of ‘Escales’ and synth voices of ‘Children Of The Sun’) as well as rattle the bass bins (sample the raw energy of ‘Basic Solution’ and delicate power of ‘Ritual’). Both sparse and insightful (‘My People’) as well as intricate and anthemic (Never Loose My Soul’) Quenum’s delivery is always quirky and slightly surprising and ‘Face To Face’ is a curious analysis into this honest musical soul. Deejaying since the early 80’s and living in London throughout the 90’s, Quenum gained notoriety founding Acess58 in 1996, before moving to Geneva and setting up Num records in 2005. Together with Luciano, Quenum founded the ubersuccessful label Cadenza, finding a home for their first collaboration “Orange Mistake” one of the most played tracks of the last ten years in the techno circuit. More recently, Quenum partnered with Swiss producer Dachschund to found the Clapper imprint. Philippe Quenum is a key figure within the techno scene, garnering a considerable stream of releases on labels including Contexterrior, Crosstown Rebels, Orac, Trapez, Serialism and Toys for Boys, with tracks appearing on close to 20 compilations on labels such as Fabric (Carl Craig) and Cocoon. Crediting his childhood in Africa and his family background for his musical taste, Quenum has worked on music for documentaries and had a career as a breakdancer. A keen experimenter, his productions are known for their simplicity yet richness in detail. His flawless mixing technique and live sets are constantly redefining and upgrading abstract electronic dance music. CONNECT: facebook.com/pages/Quenum/286291779457?fref=ts @quenum

It's you (MK Remix) - FCL 13. Got Me (MK Remix) - Sinead Harnett 14. Open (MK Remix) - Rhye Biography: Marc 'MK' Kinchen is an artist-producer who straddles boundaries as few others can. On the one hand, he's revered by lovers of house and garage music worldwide. His classic 90s productions such as Burning, Always, K.E.L.S.E.Y's Boy and 4th Measure Men's For You remain floorfillers to this day, as do his 200-plus unmistakeable remixes for artists ranging from Bizarre Inc to Blondie, not least his mix of Nightcrawlers' Push The Feeling On, which became one the biggest house crossover hits of the decade. He's cited as an influence by countless leading producers – including, significantly, Todd 'Godfather of UK Garage' Edwards. This pre-eminent status is reflected in the fact that he's the latest artist to be featured in Defected's House Masters series. Yet on the other hand, as a songwriter and producer, he's also worked regularly with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Will Smith, Ne-Yo and Beyonce. No mean list of achievements for someone who started making music as a teenaged Depeche Mode fan in Detroit in the early 80s. “I was into Skinny Puppy, Ministry… all that alternative/industrial electronic stuff,” says Marc of his early days. “And then through a girl I knew, I ended up in a band called Separate Minds with Terrence Parker and Lou Robinson. I didn't really know anything about house and techno then, but I knew a lot more about how to use the equipment than they did!” Separate Minds' first EP, released in 1988, caught the ear of Kevin Saunderson and Marc, still in his teens, ended up working with him for two years, engineering on Inner City records and honing his studio craft. And then came Burning, which he recorded with local vocalist Alana. “Alana didn't have the greatest voice,” says Marc, “but there was something about her, and we did that Burning vocal in one take. But that's how I like to work. I don't like to spend too much time getting things perfect – sometimes the mistakes sound better!” The track was snapped up by Virgin in the US, and an album deal followed, which saw Marc moving to Brooklyn. With Always and For You further cementing his reputation, the remix offers started to flood in. Artists to get the MK treatment around this time included Bobby Brown, D'Influence, The Shamen, The B-52s, D:Ream, Moby, Pet Shop Boys and Bizarre Inc, to name but a few… yet it was a 1994 remix for then-unknown Scottish outfit Nightcrawlers that would see his star rise yet higher. Famously, his first mix of Push The Feeling On was rejected, so Marc – about to depart for a flight – quickly threw together another one. “I literally did that mix in about half an hour – on one monitor, because the other one had blown!” he laughs. Despite its inauspicious birth, Push The Feeling On [The Dub Of Doom] would go on to be a huge hit worldwide. Marc says he was largely unaware, at the time, of just how successful it was – “back then there was no internet, and I didn't DJ, so I wasn't out in clubs all the time” – but the remix requests started coming in faster than ever. One in particular he jumped at was Celine Dion's Misled: “I wanted to do a remix I could tell my mom about!” he says. “And I liked the idea of making a Celine Dion record work in a house club. The same with Freak'n U by Jodeci – the idea of making an R&B act have a smash house record appealed to me.” But then things took a left turn. Tired of producing endless club mixes, Marc began to shop himself around as a songwriter and producer for hire… and after a chance meeting at the Motown offices, found himself working in the studio with Quincy Jones. Which is how Marc Kinchen became house music's own Lord Lucan, seemingly vanishing from the scene as, for the next ten years, he worked exclusively in the pop and R&B fields. From 2002 to 2006, Marc was an in-house producer with Will Smith, working on film and TV music. Eventually, feeling a desire to make records again, he struck out on his own once more – only to find the music industry landscape considerably altered. “But by this time, you had YouTube. I'd see my records on there, and all these comments, and I started to see how much love there still was for tracks I'd done 10, 15 years before.” His decision to return to dance music was triggered by hearing Hotel Room Service by Pitbull. Noting the track's hefty Nightcrawlers sample, Marc got in touch with the Cuban-American rapper and ended up producing club tracks for him. Through his work for Pitbull, Marc began to hook up with the likes of Laidback Luke and Afrojack and “really start getting back into the house thing. It seems like the classic house sound is getting really popular again, so now seems like the perfect time to come back to it.” So for the past couple of years, the name MK has started cropping up on club flyers, as Marc commences a new stage of his career as a DJ – a role he previously shunned. And that's not the end of the story. He's still doing pop music, but Marc also has several house-related projects in the pipeline. His remix of Storm Queen's Look Right Through is currently making waves in clubland, there's some new material featuring Alana on its way, and he's been working on some deep house tracks with Lee Foss and Jamie Jones. Along with his brother – house producer Scotti Deep – he's also setting up a new label, Say Aah. “At the moment we're still just getting some music together,” says Marc of the label, “but yeah… this 'House Masters' compilation, this is only the beginning!”

Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone. Years spending wandering medieval landscapes have informed Claptone’s view of the world, experi- encing both magical mystery and muted melancholy he enchanted onlookers with occult instruments and beguiling sounds. Forever surrounded by a sense of intrigue, the world soon cottoned on to the elusive yet enchanting musical powers of this otherworldly beast. The results are that today his sha- manistic sonic powers take him all around the world. Whilst Claptone has continued to roam in his own circles, 2012AD proved to be a year dominated
by his infectious ‘Cream’ track. It became an immediate hit, topping new world charts at Beatport and RA, whilst the sonic conjuring of the ‘Night On Fire’ EP also lured all those who heard it, with the result another Top 20 hit. But that’s not all, for the creativity flows freely in our hero, and his ‘Another Night’ also proved to be just as successful on the dancefloor. Deep and woozy, the Claptone sound pairs theatre with tragedy, feel good vibes with acute melancholia and imbues each groove with a Rhodes laced funk, an organic string hook and myriad earthy elements. Up to the present day, Claptone releases have been birthed on Germany’s influential Exploited label, picking up props from the likes of Pete Tong, DJ Sneak, Soul Clap, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose, A-Trak along the way. Who or whatever Claptone is, it is alive, with a life of its own, evolving and revolving in equal measure, exploring new sounds naturally and forever taking inspiration from long gone and occult worlds. So far, esteemed and influential dancefloors at clubs in Berlin, London, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai, New York and many others around the world have fallen under the sonic spell of this secretive alche- mist. The future is unpredictable for Claptone, but a new release ‘Wrong’ including the track ‘No Eyes’ with the inimitable JAW from French funsters dOP is on the horizon. No track list.... It's a live djset.... Biography: Martin Stimming was born in Giessen, Germany. Playing various instruments like violin, piano and drums when he was 10 years, discovering electronic music 5 years after. DJ Krush and Grooverider provided his introduction into this new electronic sound dimension. About a year later he came upon techno. At this time he was living in Butzbach, a small town near Frankfurt – influenced very much from Chris Liebing and Sven Vaeth, starting to djing and buying vinyl. He soon realized that for him making music was more fullfilling than "just" playing a groove, or mixing a record, so he started to take his production seriously and moved to Hamburg to attend SAE (School of Audio Engineering). Music had become the most important thing in his life. For 2 years, he was the producer part of the Gebrueder Ton, and in this time he befriended Diynamic (a record label from Solomun and Adriano). Stimming's debut on Diynamic was Diynamic 006 Feuervogel EP, which he produces together with Solomun. The man just never seems to sleep. Releasing and remixing all over, right now he is definitely in demand, and its obvious to all why. Everything he touches turns to gold and once again with have a couple of nuggets here for you today. Torre Bros & Sebastien Bardy - Basements Biography: Talk about house music and its impossible not to talk about Japan’s Satoshi Tomiie. Satoshi runs the well-respected SAW.RECORDINGS imprint with Hector Romero, and together the pair have continued to refine and reinvent the Chicago and New York house blueprint for more than a decade by championing the up and coming international talents of acts like Audiofly, Doomwork, Mabaan Soul, Tuccillo and Guti. Of course, all the while Satoshi has continued to release seminal albums and tracks like Full Lick and Love In Traffic, records that showcase the man’s unique take on dark and twisted electronic rhythms, tortured vocals and generally hypnotic sounds. Having taken something of a time out to rebuild his studio, Satoshi is now back with a vengeance. He is producing, DJing and remixing at the top of his game once more and evidence of that comes in the form of his elongated and magical remix of Guti’s Keep It, which picked up support from contemporary heroes like Marco Carola, Loco Dice and Reboot. It is the same clubs as those heroes he plays in on a regular basis, places like EGG London, Stereo Montreal, Womb in Tokyo and Pacha Ibiza as well as many other places around the globe. Recently Satoshi has continued to play across Europe as well as having devised a pop up party concept that has been on tour across Italy and aims to concentrate on smaller more intimate club spaces, proving that he is still evolving and pushing things forwards after decades in the game. So too has he mixed it up for Italian site Soundwall’s podcast series and late in 2012 released his well received Backside Wave EP. Summer 2013 will be yet another landmark in Satoshi’s career, as it will see the release of a next artist album full of the electronic delights we have come to expect from the man who is still very much an essential voice in the global house music conversation.

Since first getting to grip with decks at the age of 19, Anna has developed a reputation and keen following in her native London and university town of Newcastle. Playing classic and contemporary house and US garage and with a strong affinity with the roots of both, Anna’s broad knowledge of the history of dance music sets her apart from the hundreds of unimaginative, chart-championing DJs that plague the scene. Anna’s international break came in 2011 when she was recruited as resident DJ for Croatia’s Yacht Week, playing alongside CR2's Dan Castro for an epic 7 days 7 nights. Since then, she has been booked alongside some of the world’s most respected DJ talents, with the last few months seeing Anna DJ in the impressive company of MK, Robert Owens, Norman Jay, Inland Knights, Soul Clap, Adam Shelton and Jordan Peak. Anna finest moment to date came back March, when she played for Mixmag’s DJ Lab live stream at their penthouse in Miami alongside techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson and Miami’s own Treasure Fingers; an incredible achievement in its own right and one about which she is extremely proud. Now signed to Colluded Talent’s agency and with forthcoming releases on Two House Recordings (Denmark) and Deep Booth Recordings (Italy), the next few months and years look set to propel her to new levels of acclaim. Talent, passion, perseverance and an unerring work-ethic; to achieve even moderate success in the industry you need all of these qualities and more in abundance. So when Danny and Alessandro – now known under the ferociously successful Flashmob moniker – stepped away from their highly fruitful previous project to essentially start again from scratch, they were more than aware of the long, hard road ahead of them. In 2012 Flashmob is one of the most acclaimed, instantly recognisable production groups in house music. Riding a tidal wave of success generated by the ravenous response to singles ‘Brick House’, ‘Ninety Five’ and – most significantly – ‘Need In Me’, Flashmob have carved an indelible niche for themselves, crafting sublimely unpretentious house music, the widespread appeal of which has been near unprecedented. Not many people’s records get spun by both Kerri Chandler at Pandemonium and Pete Tong at Pacha in the same season; the fact that Flashmob can count themselves as producers in this group goes some way to showing the global underground appeal of the records they make. Flashmob began to take shape more than five years ago, after Danny and Alessandro began disillusioned with their current project and laid it to rest. Although highly respected in the techno and progressive house genres, they felt they had lost sight of why they started a career in music. “We were producing 40-50 records a year” recalls Alessandro “and the labels we were working with were just chucking them out.” Rightly concerned that the labels were concentrating on quantity over quality of their output, they stepped away from the industry to take stock and to consider their options. “We decided that whatever we did next it should be about taking it back to basics” explains Alessandro. And that’s exactly what they did. Educating themselves in the origins of house music they immersed themselves in the records and history of Chicago house Larry Levan, Studio 54, and came back with a rejuvenated passion that extended not only to the music they would produce but the way in which they would come to promote it. Their debut record as Flashmob was ‘Brick House’, a record that was eventually signed to pioneering Berlin imprint Get Physical. To kick start the release however, Danny and Alessandro went back to grass-roots promotion, quite literally, as they spend 10 hours on the parched scrubland and car parks outside Ibiza’s DC10, Pacha and Space ensuring that the DJs they wanted to have the record had a copy. A far cry from sending your latest release to a mailing list of hundreds, ‘Brick House’ proved that it only takes support from a few key tastemakers to make yourself heard, and for a while the enthusiastic hubbub created by ‘Brick House’ was simply irrepressible. If ‘Brick House’ suggested that Flashmob might be capable of greatness, then it was the follow-up of Ninety Five that proved it beyond all doubt. Signed by house heavyweight Defected Records and awarded the accolade of Essential New Tune by Pete Tong ‘Need In Me’ was undoubtedly one of the biggest tracks of the year in Ibiza it remains and biggest selling track on Defected of 2012. But despite all its subsequent triumphs it was a record that was close to never seeing the light of day. When Defected requested a record from them, Alessandro did something he had never done before and sent the record to the label without telling his productions partner Danny. “We weren’t sure that we wanted to release ‘Need In Me’” explains Alessandro “we just didn’t know if it was the right record for us”. This reluctance to do what do most people would have been an obvious decision highlights the humility and level-headedness with which Flashmob conduct themselves. Despite their records hitting hundreds of thousands of plays on YouTube and regularly being charted by A-list DJs from all backgrounds, Alessandro claims they are unaware of the level of success they’ve reached. “At the moment we’re just concentrating on the music and concentrating on delivering the best DJ set possible whenever we play” he admits. “Danny and I have been through thick and thin for five years to get to this point; now that we’re here we have to keep on pushing ourselves rather than sit back and think about our success.” November 2012 sees the release of their latest endeavour, ‘Hot’, a record which according to Alessandro is “the true evolution of ‘Brick House’. ‘Need In Me’ was a one-off record; ‘Hot’ picks up where we left off in 2011 and further develops the Flashmob sound.” Early support from DJ Sneak, MK and Tiefschwarz indicates that ‘Hot’ will follow a similar lofty path to that of its predecessors, but Danny and Alessandro are already planning their next move. “The next Flashmob record will be something that people aren’t expecting… that’s how you stay ahead of the game!” enthuses Danny. And with an album in the pipeline and a touring schedule rapidly on the rise, all the signs are there that Flashmob will continue their rapid ascension into 2013 and beyond.
