Hear about three very different books recommended by Michael Gregg, library associate for the Troy Public Library. “Satan Is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers” (Charlie Louvin with Benjamin Whitmer, 2012) tells the story of “one of the most legendary country duos of all time.” A young adult book “The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale” (Jon Klassen, 2023) develops the story of a young girl drawn to a lonely house where the host is a talking disembodied skull, and how the girl must save them both. Finally, Michael calls “The Stench of Honolulu” (2013), by former SNL writer Jack Handey, a “laugh-out-loud funny” fictional story of two friends on a quest for a Golden Monkey in the mysterious land of Honolulu. He also mentions "Every Man for Himself and God Against All: A Memoir" (Werner Herzog, 2023). Aus dem Gefängnis Old Lonesome entkommen 1968 am Sylvesterabend zwölf Gefangene. Die Geschichte hat eine reale Vorlage. Am 30. Dezember 1947 gelang ein ähnlicher Ausbruch aus einem Staatsgefängnis in Colorado. Für den Gefängnisdirektor, Cyprus Jugg, im Roman die Gelegnheit zu beweisen, was er unter einem Rechtsstaat versteht. Er empfindet den Ausbruch als Majetätsbeleidignung und verfolgt nur eine Linie: keine Überlebende. Benjamin Whitmers dritter Roman lässt das Gefühl der Verlorenheit weit hinter sich. Mitten in einem heraufziehenden Schneesturm begegnen wir Leser einer archaischen Gewalt.
