Timothy's picked some belters in the past with the likes of the Hitcher, Scarface, Nighthawks and others. And this time, he's gone for the iconic 1992 action crime thriller, Hard Boiled.Hard Boiled (1992), directed by action maestro John Woo, is a landmark in the Hong Kong action genre, known for its hyper-stylized violence and stunning gunplay choreography. The film was a departure from Woo's typical themes of brotherhood and loyalty, focusing instead on a relentless, hard-edged cop named Tequila. Woo wanted to push the limits of action cinema, combining emotionally driven storytelling with balletic shootouts. The film's production was intense and complex, featuring elaborate set pieces that required meticulous planning, including the now-legendary hospital shootout that took over a month to film. The production was plagued by challenges, from budget constraints to Woo's perfectionist approach, which led to prolonged filming. At one point, the crew had to rebuild part of the hospital set after a massive explosion shot went awry. Despite the hurdles, Hard Boiled became a genre-defining classic, with Woo's signature slow-motion action sequences and inventive camera work influencing Hollywood filmmakers for decades. It marked the end of Woo's Hong Kong career before his move to Hollywood, where his style became a blueprint for modern action cinema. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryInspector Tequila, a tough Hong Kong cop, goes on a relentless mission to take down a dangerous arms-smuggling syndicate after his partner is killed in a brutal shootout. Teaming up with an undercover cop named Alan, who is deeply embedded in the criminal world, Tequila navigates a treacherous web of deception and violence. As tensions rise, the duo finds themselves in a deadly showdown inside a hospital packed with innocent lives at stake, culminating in an explosive battle of survival and justice.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
Joeba Fett and Ripley Scott crack open the mystery of Jacob Barber's extraordinary egg-shaped UAP retrieval claims in this hard-boiled episode of Close Encounters of The Slurred Kind. Alongside their usual Hyperspace Headlines (featuring runaway lab monkeys and linguistic anomalies), they dive into a particularly stinky edition of Would You Rather? before getting to the yolk of the matter in Scrambling for Truth. From Barber's claims of psionic-controlled alien craft to a bizarre 4chan leak describing an organic, symbiotic UAP, this episode explores the key players, conspiracies, and the bizarre “Skywatchers” initiative—where Barber plans to summon a UFO. Plus, Joeba asks the real questions: Why is every UFO photo still grainy as hell? Why didn't Barber's team retrieve the crashed craft? And most importantly… what came first, the UFO or the alien? Stay scrambled, dimension hoppers—this one's a mind-bender.

A team of Italian researchers have developed a method for cooking the perfect hard-boiled egg, a task that has long frustrated home cooks. Their research revealed that cooking an egg to perfection requires separate temperatures for its two main components: the egg white (albumen) and the yolk. The egg white cooks best at approximately 185°F, while the yolk requires a lower temperature of about 149°F. The technique involves two pots: one with boiling water and another with water kept at around 86°F (30°C). The eggs are first immersed in the boiling water for two minutes, then transferred to the cooler water for two minutes. This back-and-forth is repeated for eight full cycles, taking a total of 32 minutes. The result is eggs with a perfectly cooked white and yolk, offering a rich taste, improved texture, and higher nutritional value than eggs cooked by conventional methods. The researchers were not aiming to patent this cooking method; rather, their goal was to show that the science behind everyday problems, even something as simple as cooking an egg, can make a noticeable difference. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A Miami Vice-influenced cross between neo-Noir and over-the-top action, it's the story of two cops—one an alcoholic detective, the other an undercover cop playing hitman—taking down some Hong Kong gangsters. It has gung-fu, babies in peril, and the boxiest, beigest computers the 1990s could deliver. Starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung, Theresa Mo, Philip Chan, and Anthony Wong. Written by Gordon Chan and Barry Wong. Directed by John Woo. Apologies to any listeners for the sound, this was recorded while Mary had a bad cold.
The best action movie with a baby sidekick ever.
Like Looking in the Mirror, Only Not: John Woo's Face/Off This week Mr. Chavez and I continue our look at blockbusters with this 1997 John Woo Classic of stylized violence, ridiculous plotting, and unbridled overacting . . . we are - of course - talking about Woo's Face/Off. There's no way to really get into how utterly ridiculous this film is for an episode synopsis, but I will say that it was a fun utterly moronic ride into the past. John Travolta (riding the waves of Pulp Fiction that would carry him through to the end of the century) and Nicolas Cage unrestrained and without any sense of shame . . . Cage at His Most Cagiest. Through all of the fun, Ibrahim and I also discuss Woo's foray into Hollywood filmmaking and the troubles he would find translating his sense of heroic honor to a culture that would find it campy (essentially why do none of Woo's signature cinematic touches work in Face/Off, but are so incredible and beautifully realized in such masterpieces as The Killer, Hard-Boiled, and Bullet in the Head?). Join us as we devote more discussion than this film deserves and still recognize it as a great fun time at a bad movie. Many saw the dark side of the American dream, but none wrote about it like Jim Tully. Having spent six years of his childhood in a Cincinnati orphanage, Tully returned to his hometown of St. Marys, Ohio before climbing aboard a freight train in 1901. Drifting across the country as a "road kid," he spent his teens, sleeping in hobo jungles, avoiding railroad cops, and haunting public libraries. After six years on the road, he settled in Kent, Ohio where he boxed professionally and began to write. Following a move to Hollywood where he worked for Charlie Chaplin, Tully issued a stream of critically acclaimed books that serve as a dark and astonishing chronicle of the American underclass. Having established himself as a major American author, he turned his attention to Hollywood writing dozens of articles about the movies, often shocking the Hollywood establishment. Along the way, he picked up such close friends as W. C. Fields, Jack Dempsey, H. L. Mencken, and Frank Capra. He also memorably crossed paths with Jack London, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, and Langston Hughes. [originally published on Patreon Nov 7, 2022] Today's the second of two episodes on the hardboiled novelist Dashiell Hammett. Today I discuss several Hammett's wartime experiences, his tuberculosis, the tail end of his private detective career, and his writing career. Hammett went to Hollywood and became a committed communist, and was targeted by McCarthy and HUAC. Fundamentally, though, we can learn much from Hammett. Songs: I'm No Communist by Lulu Belle & Scotty When I'm Gone by Phil Ochs

Tonight's Kinda Murdery is True-Crime-Noir at its most hard-boiled. As always, everything you're about to hear really happened. John Brunen, a 47-year-old, wealthy circus owner known as, “Honest John,” is murdered in his own home before he even has a chance to draw the pistol he always carries. “Honest John's" life ended when he was decapitated, shot from behind, his head literally blown off by a double-barrelled shotgun fired through a locked window by a shadowy, light-footed killer. Brunen's wife Doris, a former broadway chorus girl, is upstairs when she hears the fatal blasts. But the killer didn't know that Brunen was a close friend of New Jersey super-sleuth Ellis H. Parker. Parker swears vengeance, promising not to rest until the murderer is found. Parker's as good as his word. But promises don't mean much without results. After investigating 600 possible suspects, he can't single clue. Parker's hit a stone wall, and he can't help but wonder why someone removed Brunen's talking parrot from the scene of the murder....What will Ellis H. Parker do next? If you're ready to find out, please join host Zevon Odelberg for Kinda Murdery's telling of, "THE DISAPPEARING PARROT!"Sources: https://gardenstatelegacy.com/files/Who_Shot_Honest_John_Bilby_GSL34.pdf https://ia601404.us.archive.org/32/items/true-detective-jan-1929/TrueDetectiveJan1929.pdfBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery--5496890/support.
