Storycomic Presents: Interviews with Amazing Storytellers and Artists
#JonDexter #DimeStoreDetective #AlphaDogsComics #SupernaturalNoir #CrimeMystery #AppalachianNoir #IndieComics #ComicKickstarter #SerialKillerStory #AncientEvil #DetectiveStory #NoirComics #StorycomicPresents #IndieCreators #HorrorComics In this episode of Storycomic Presents, I'm joined once again by comic creator Jon Dexter to dive into his supernatural crime-noir series Dime-Store Detective, now collected as Volume 1 on Kickstarter. Set in the Appalachian Mountains, the story jumps between 1981 North Georgia, where a bloody war between moonshiners cracks open a hidden cave and wakes an ancient evil, and the present day, where Detective Donald Mackinder is hunting a serial killer while wrestling with his family's dark past. Think True Detective colliding with IT in a slow-burn, forty-year mystery full of cult secrets, small-town sins, and something monstrous lurking just out of sight. We talk about building Appalachian noir with a supernatural edge, how Jon braids trauma, faith, and fate into the case, and what he's learned running multiple successful comic Kickstarters. If you're into moody crime stories with a horror heartbeat, this one's for you. Back the book: search for “Dime-Store Detective Volume 1” on Kickstarter. This week, Features director Jessi D spoke with Jannese Espino, Christian Ovalle, Yeshi Regalado, and Zach Riedler of Chicago's own La Rosa Noir at Riot Fest in September 2025. La Rosa Noir was one of three up-and-coming local artists from the Little Village and North Lawndale neighborhoods selected to be added to the Riot Fest lineup by community submission. They discuss the emotional process from submission to acceptance to finally playing the stage at the festival, their self-made genre "midwest surf," and their cultural heritages shining through in their art. "Being Hispanic, Latino, Latin American, Chicano - we're such a prideful people naturally. And I feel like it's always going to bleed through whatever we create." - Yeshi Regalado Produced by Jessi D. Photo Credit: Jessi D
Unknown Broadcast returns with classic old-time radio horror stories—radio suspense steeped in paranoia, poison, prison clocks, and a blade that never stops its kiss. Settle in, my dear: this ghost stories podcast slips between classic OTR chambers—Mystery Theater, Escape, The Whistler, and more—where alibis are stitched on ocean liners, serpents nest under sheets, and justice keeps perfect time. Tonight's anthology is candlelit, close-mouthed, and very patient. Breathe quietly.

In this episode of Sirens, I'm joined by Rachel Corbett, journalist, academic, and author of The Monsters We Make, for a deeply thoughtful conversation about crime, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves about evil.Rachel shares how her own childhood experiences—and the moments that shaped her understanding of violence and fear—ultimately led her down the path of researching crime, criminal behavior, and the FBI's approach to criminal profiling. What began as personal curiosity evolved into years of research that challenge some of the most widely accepted assumptions in true crime. We talk in depth about The Monsters We Make, including what inspired the book, how personal history intersects with academic inquiry, and why criminal profiling may not be the reliable investigative tool pop culture has led us to believe. Rachel breaks down how profiling gained its reputation, where it has fallen short, and why its perceived success often looks very different when examined closely. This episode explores the tension between storytelling and science—and asks hard questions about how myths are created, repeated, and cemented in both law enforcement and media.Find more about Rachel at https://www.rachel-corbett.com/.Mentioned in this episode:Allegedly: POCOGet Allegedly: True Crime From Pontotoc County, OK today. We do have our favorite but surely wouldn't mind if Thomas Pynchon won the Nobel Prize too . . . and in Episode 32 we finish off 2025 by considering Shadow Ticket, the noir detective take on the 1930s by a writer who was surely a key influence on the early DeLillo (we read from an unpublished DeLillo letter summarizing that relationship) but who also seems to have been reading works like Running Dog over the years (or so we imagine in unpacking Shadow Ticket scenes invoking Chaplin and a “German Political Celebrity” named Hitler). We try to understand how Pynchon's latest examination of historical and potential fascism works in its 1932 setting, ranging from Milwaukee to Hungary, where reluctant protagonist and “sentimental ape” and “sap” Hicks McTaggart keeps adding on to his P.I. “tickets” in a strange search for a Wisconsin heiress and her Jewish musician lover but also what might ultimately be justice (a far from simple thing). Shadow Ticket is loads of serious fun, where Pynchon manages to examine the direst of turning points amidst scenes of bowling alley and motorcycle lore, dairy strikes, Prohibition's black markets, dance hall and speakeasy glamour, and something called “Radio-Cheez.” Bela Lugosi, vampires, a beautiful pig in a sidecar, and some of the most tasteless lamps in the world also play a role. The real content here for Hicks, though, is the prospect of spiritual and other forms of peace in a world where weapons from clubs to guns and submarines operate according to mysterious laws of “apport” and “asport,” occult material that interweaves with Hicks's strike-breaking past and raises connections to Gravity's Rainbow. Is Hicks's fellow orphan and young protégé Skeet Wheeler the father of Vineland's Zoyd, headed out to California as the novel ends? What's the meaning of Hicks failing to return to his home country, and what does cheese gangster Bruno Airmont's submarine fate have to do with Bleeding Edge? Are Hungary's shifting borders a new kind of “Zone”? What's going on in the novel's many Statue of Liberty references and its anachronistic allusions to a “Face Tube” for flirtation in bars? And how does this always funny writer, now in his late eighties, keep coming up with all these absurd songs (we sing some) and hilarious mock-movies like the one featuring “Squeezita Thickly” swimming in soup pots (Shirley Temple, is that you?)? Teasing out many connections to Gravity's Rainbow, Against the Day, and Vineland, this episode makes reference to just about all of Pynchon's other works, including even V. and his earliest short stories. At the same time, you need come to it with nothing but an interest in Pynchon's life and work. We doubt that we get every reference to history or previous Pynchon right or mount interpretations we won't later want to revise, but on this brand-new and captivating late work from a masterful author, we hope in nearly three hours of deep conversation and laughter that we've made a good start on the many critical readings to come. A partial list of references and quotations that we mention or paraphrase in this episode . . . On “prefascist twilight”: “And other grandfolks could be heard arguing the perennial question of whether the United States still lingered in a prefascist twilight, or whether that darkness had fallen long stupefied years ago, and the light they thought they saw was coming only from millions of Tubes all showing the same bright-colored shadows. One by one, as other voices joined in, the names began, some shouted, some accompanied by spit, the old reliable names good for hours of contention, stomach distress, and insomnia – Hitler, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Nixon, Hoover, Mafia, CIA, Reagan, Kissinger, that collection of names and their tragic interweaving that stood not constellated above in any nightwide remoteness of light, but below, diminished to the last unfaceable American secret, to be pressed, each time deeper, again and again beneath the meanest of random soles, one blackly fermenting leaf on the forest floor that nobody wanted to turn over, because of all that lived, virulent, waiting, just beneath.” (Pynchon, Vineland (1990)) On “second sheep”: “Our common nightmare The Bomb is in there too. It was bad enough in '59 and is much worse now, as the level of danger has continued to grow. There was never anything subliminal about it, then or now. Except for that succession of the criminally insane who have enjoyed power since 1945, including the power to do something about it, most of the rest of us poor sheep have always been stuck with simple, standard fear. I think we all have tried to deal with this slow escalation of our helplessness and terror in the few ways open to us, from not thinking about it to going crazy from it. Somewhere on this spectrum of impotence is writing fiction about it.” (Pynchon, “Introduction,” Slow Learner (1984)) The “Sloth essay paragraph” mentioned midway through: “In this century we have come to think of Sloth as primarily political, a failure of public will allowing the introduction of evil policies and the rise of evil regimes, the worldwide fascist ascendancy of the 1920's and 30's being perhaps Sloth's finest hour, though the Vietnam era and the Reagan-Bush years are not far behind. Fiction and nonfiction alike are full of characters who fail to do what they should because of the effort involved. How can we not recognize our world? Occasions for choosing good present themselves in public and private for us every day, and we pass them by. Acedia is the vernacular of everyday moral life.” (Pynchon, “Nearer, My Couch, To Thee” (1993)) Don DeLillo Papers, Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas-Austin The Motherland Calls statue, Volgograd: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Motherland_Calls Pareidolia defined: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia

Season 6 Episode 5: Joseph Gatto Unsolved - Interview With His Son Mike Gatto In this episode of Invisible Tears, Jane and Amanda interview Mike Gatto about his fathers unsolved homicide. Joseph Gatto was murdered November, 12, 2013 in his home in Los Angeles California. While a very small amount of DNA exists in this case as well as a sketch of a potential assailant, this case still remains unsolved with very little to go on. Mike's personal and professional journey gives him a unique perspective on victim advocacy, reform, victims rights and trauma. Just last year in 2024, Mike wrote a deeply personal book entitled "Noir by Necessity: How My Father's Unsolved Murder Took Me To Dark Places". In this book, Mike outlines all the details known in his father's case, many theories that have developed, and of course, the trauma him and his family have gone through. You can purchase his book through the link below: https://www.amazon.com/Noir-Necessity-Fathers-Unsolved-Murder/dp/1685133819 Anyone with information about Joseph Gatto's homicide should contact LAPD Robbery Homicide Detectives Barry Telis or Chris Gable at (213) 486-5910. Mike Gatto served four terms in the California Legislature, representing Los Angeles. He chaired the Appropriations Committee, served as Assistant Speaker, and authored several pieces of landmark legislation. On November 13, 2013, his father, Joseph Gatto, was brutally murdered in a home-invasion robbery, which remains unsolved. Mike wrote the book, Noir by Necessity: How My Father's Unsolved Murder Took Me to Dark Places, which documents his father’s brutal murder and the investigation that took place. Mike takes the reader along with him, witnessing Mike’s frustration, anger, and grief. It was indeed an honor to talk with Mike. He was honest and sincere, taking me to places during the interview I didn’t expect. I hope and pray that someday soon the killer in this case is brought to justice and the Gatto family can get some much-deserved answers. In today’s episode, we discuss: · Why Mike went into politics and what his wife thought. · The governors Mike worked for? · What and who were his biggest influences? · His father working 3 jobs and the impact he had on others, discipline, including white glove inspections. · On November 12, 2013, Joseph Gatto was murdered in an apparent home-invasion robbery. This case is still unsolved to this day! · How did you explain what happened to your father to your kids? · His first contact with the police regarding his father’s murder. · LAPD’s Robbery/Homicide taking the lead in this investigation. · Mike hiring a private detective. Was it worth his time and money and the pushback from the LAPD? Would you entertain a psychic or other non-traditional avenues? · The pressure he received from his own party to become the face of gun control. · The idea of closure is a fairy tale. Most families of murder victims never achieve this. · His book Noir by Necessity: How My Father's Unsolved Murder Took Me to Dark Places. All of this and more on today’s episode of the Cops and Writers podcast. Please visit Mike's website to learn more about him and his book. Check out the new Cops and Writers YouTube channel! There are big swings, and then there are huge swings. Writer Adam Rose and artist Magenta King go for the fences with Huge Detective, a genre mashup mystery where giants roam the Earth and wind up dead like any other sacks of meat. The series was recently collected in a pretty trade paperback from Titan Comics, and it immediately had us craving sequels and sidequels. Where's our Gyant/Bean romance? We're ready for it. We met Adam Rose earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, and bonded quickly over our love for the eighties cartoon series M.A.S.K. After a few minutes of chatting, we knew we wanted to get him on the show, and after a few months of wrangling our schedules, we finally made it happen. Unfortunately, we did not spend the entire time discussing how Matt Trakker is currently running through the panels of Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly's G.I. Joe comic. Next time, next time. In this episode, we discuss Adam Rose's love for fantasy and detective fiction. And we force him to choose his preferred genre. Our conversation explores the massive sandbox they've created in Huge Detective and the numerous other genres they could possibly explore in future comics. We make our case for romance. We consider Dollsville, too. Huge Detective issues one through five are now available in trade paperback from Titan Comics. They're written by Adam Rose, illustrated by Magenta King, colored by King and Minimone, and lettered by DC Hopkins. To continue this conversation, follow Adam Rose on Blue Sky and Instagram.
