Feminist author Victoria Smith discusses her first book, ‘Hags', about the demonisation of middle-aged women with FiLiA Spokeswoman Raquel Rosario Sánchez. Smith discusses the experiences which raised her awareness to the way middle-aged women are invisibilised and dismissed under patriarchy around the world, as well her understanding of the tropes designed to further vilify this cohort of women. A thoughtful thinker and compassionate writer, this book represents an enraging call to action for everyone, to revindicate our past and create a better future for all women, throughout middle-age and beyond.Victoria Smith is a writer and creator of the Glosswitch newsletter. She has been a regular contributor to the New Statesman and the Independent, focussing on women's issues, parenting and mental health. She has also written for Mumsnet, featured on panels at their Blogfest, and has made appearances on Woman's Hour to discuss female body image. Her newsletter The OK Karen, focused on midlife women's experiences of feminism, was launched in 2020, and she is particularly interested in how experiences of power and misogyny change as we age.Originally from Cumbria, she now lives in Cheltenham with her family. She is working towards achieving full venerable crone status before she hits fifty. You can follow Victoria Smith's commentary on Twitter and read her regular insights on women's rights at The Critic. Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

Writer, coach, consultant and Wild Woman, Mary Daniels, is our guest this week. She talks about the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create change in the world and their values and behaviour. In the Show… Judith’s car has sailed through the MoT but she discovered some bad small business news down at the garage while she was there. She reflects on Twitter in the week of her 10th Twitterversary. Nicola’s enjoyed another sociable week of dining out, Reading Club, Mothers’ Day pampering, ouzo and octopus and a birthday party. She has her eye on a chap who is both taciturn and saturnine and has his own boat AND his own taverna! What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith’s fire was fuelled by last Friday’s recording session with upcoming podcast guests 9-12 - Rhys, Richard, Alice and Paula. Nicola’s spoken to Justin Brooke about her Facebook Ads account suspension and he’s helped her to rationalise it unemotionally and to find the workaround. Focus of the Week: Mary Daniels – Normal People, Noble Causes Mary's talk is about the dangers of not knowing who you are and the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create change in the world with their values and behaviour. Noble causes are served by perfectly normal human beings who behave in exceptional ways and this isn't limited to organisations either, it can apply to us working at home alone. Ask yourself about your daily habits: Am I being true to who I am? Would anyone looking in from the outside know that? What compromises do I make, how do I let my values slip, how often do I evaluate that so I can bring myself back on track? Mary’s first book is published by Hay House and called Wild Awakening, and she’s working on her next. Find out more at MaryDaniels.co.uk Words of the Week Nicola picks Leisure and Judith goes for Dreams. Project Updates Own It! The Podcast’s download numbers continue to impress both Nicola and Judith and their best guess is that it is a second spike attributable to Radio Public who reward podcasters who send them traffic. Nicola’s writing a sales letter, and her 30 Day Challenge people continue to get excellent results and ROI. One of them was also featured by Radio Public in their Indies to Watch spotlight. Judith continues to make good progress with her Creating the Impossible Challenge, her Blogfest. Now all 52 blog posts are published and all 52 podcasts too. Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola is impressed (again) by Iain Banks, having re-read The Wasp Factory in her Reading Club. Both Judith and Nicola had read it before but since it was published in 1984, neither of them can remember it! Judith is impressed by three women – Sarah Sellers who finished second in the Boston Marathon, Tammie Jo Shults the pilot who landed the South West Airlines plane which lost an engine mid-flight and Doreen Lawrence who never gave up hope of achieving justice for her son, Stephen. Follow Linda on Social Media @ Chickfitstudio on Facebook Instagram and Twitter and my website is www.chickfit.me I love, eat, and breathe fitness, so I was beyond honored to interview The First Lady of Physical Fitness, Elaine LaLanne . She is the wife of fitness legend Jack LaLanne. I'm not going to lie.   I got pretty teary-eyed when I was preparing for this podcast about Jack and Elaine LaLanne. Together they have created the most amazing legacy that we all still benefit from today. You know what they say; behind every great man is an incredible woman.  Elaine LaLanne is nothing less than incredible! At 91 she puts us all to shame.  Elaine does full push ups, takes no medication, and is as sharp as a tack. In this episode we talk about how Elaine, the then smoker and donut lover, met Jack, The Godfather of Fitness and he changed her life forever.  Jack also had a life-changing event happen to him; perhaps that was why he was so interested in making an impact in other people’s lives.  Jack was ill as a teen and his entire life was changed from a lecture by Paul Braggs of Braggs Aminos. This was a lecture in which Jack was almost turned away because it was sold out. Paul made room for Jack and his mother right up front. Talk about divine intervention. As Jack got older he wanted people to realize that age was just a number. He set out to prove it by completing surreal physical feats, one of which was his infamous swim from Alcatraz to the mainland with his hands and feet shackled behind his back towing a 1000 pound boat at 60 years young. Jack really stood in the gap as a pioneer.  He was responsible for so much of what we see today in fitness, from creating the selectorized weight machines, cable/pulley machines, and leg extension, to having the idea for The Smith Machine.  Jack and Elaine encouraged and introduced women to the weight room, back then they were of the thinking that women belonged in the kitchen and not in the weight room. The backwards thinking was that women would look like men if they weight trained.  Also the thinking in that day was men in sports shouldn’t weight train, because they wouldn’t be able to move as fast and if they were muscle bound and that it would slow them down. Jack LaLanne,The Godfather of Fitness, was amazing from the sheer feats of physical fitness he performed, to the machines he created that still we use today.  Jack was also responsible for creating the first protein shake and protein bar.  Jack was such a pioneer and an icon in the industry and his wife was right alongside him being on the air helping him do all that he did.  She is a fabulous lady and I am so inspired by her. I met her at the World IDEA Blog Fest and it was an instant connection. She was such a gracious lady.  I took a leap and asked her if she would do a Facebook live video with me and she did. It didn't take the first time so I had to get up the courage to go up and ask her again and she was such so gracious. We did it one more time and now I’m interviewing her on my podcast. ”Life favors the bold.” Other Episodes with Elane: Check out Elaine’s previous interviews: Episode 116 Episode 54
