Friday Afternoon, October 5th, 1979 @ Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA After two thrilling extra-inning victories in Cincinnati, the Pirates are headed home on the precipice of another World Series berth. The 'Family', as they are referred to by their loyal fans, have excelled in all facets of the game: great starting pitching (Candelaria and Bibby), tremendous defense (Foli, Madlock, and Ott), timely hitting (Stargell and Parker), and clutch bullpen heroics (Tekulve, Jackson, and unexpectedly Don Robinson!). Pittsburgh manager Chuck Tanner is confident those trends will continue, sending a veteran righty to the mound, Bert Blyleven (12 - 5 3.60 ERA 237 IP). The Dutch-born hurler will deliver one of the best games of his storied Hall-of-Fame career in his first career postseason start. Reds manager John McNamara is hoping to keep the Pirates big bats at bay with young righty Mike LaCoss (14 - 8 3.50 ERA 205 IP), a 23 year old All-Star in just his second season in the big leagues. If the youngster runs into early trouble, expect McNamara to turn to veteran lefty Fred Norman (11 - 13 3.64 ERA 195 IP). If things don't go the Reds way, it will likely be the final time that Joe Morgan dons a Cincy uniform, signaling an end to the era of the Big Red Machine. October 2, 1979 @ Riverfront Stadium For the fourth time this decade, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds will face off for the National League Pennant. The Reds have had the advantage so far this decade, defeating the Buccos in the previous three series with a combined 9-2 record. Both of these teams have dominated their respective divisions throughout this decade (6th NL east crown for PIT, 5th NL West crown for CIN), but the teams look a bit different from their previous matchups. Yes, Willie Stargell and Dave Parker are still threats in the middle of the lineup; but now they are supported by the likes of Omar Moreno, Bill Madlock, Phil Garner, and others. Bert Blyleven and Jim Bibby have come in to stabilize the rotation. Danny Murtagh is long gone as manager; Chuck Tanner gets his first crack at the postseason. Ditto for John McNamara, who replaces legendary Reds skipper Sparky Anderson (who left for Detroit). Tom Seaver is the new ace for the Reds. Key cogs of the Big Red Machine, Pete Rose and Tony Perez, departed in free agency. Former MVPs Joe Morgan and George Foster have battled injuries all year, and it seems as if these games may be the last that Morgan will play in a Red uniform. The Great Johnny Bench and ever reliable Dave Concepcion are still solid as ever up the middle, but Cincinnati has needed the boost from others like Ray Knight and Dave Collins. This game one figures to be a pitchers' duel, with two aces going at it. Tom Seaver (16 - 6 3.14 ERA 215 IP) takes the hill in his first, and surprisingly only postseason game for the Reds since he was traded in '77. On the bump for Pittsburgh is lefty John Candelaria (14 - 9 3.22 ERA 207 IP), one of the most dependable left-handed starters in all of baseball for the better part of a decade (averaged 15 - 9 3.19 ERA 216 IP between '76 - '80). This game and this series will be determined by great defense and timely hitting, as many thrilling postseason series are. Tune in for a fantastic game one. Audio Clips from joeydbball Youtube. Late in Arizona Iced Tea Cans In A Microwave, I realized that we were recording on the ides of March, so I brought up the subject of favorite baseball Caesars… or Césars, as there's never been a Caesar in MLB… and while my mind went right to César Izturis – always love a guy who winds up on nine teams in 13 seasons – I feel guilty for having neglected to mention César Cedeño.This was a galling (Gauling?) omission, so let's dig into a rabbit hole with the four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove outfielder, shall we?Use the code WCPIO for 10% off in our shop! And fuck Ron DeSantis!Although Cedeńo played for the Reds in the early 1980s, cementing him alongside Dave Concepción and Tony Pérez and others in my mind as a Cincinnati guy because of the prevalence of 1983-85 Topps in my foundational baseball years, it was Houston where Cedeño had his best years. What happens in my brain is that I, born and raised in the 1980s, meld together Cedeño (72-year-old Dominican who won Gold Gloves with a non-coastal NL West team in the 1970s) and César Gerónimo (75-year-old Dominincan who won Gold Gloves, four of them, with a non-coastal NL West team in the 1970s).Gerónimo played for the Reds from 1972-80, arriving in Cincinnati from the Astros as part of the Joe Morgan trade (Morgan, Gerónimo, Ed Armbrister, Jack Billingham, and Denis Menke for Tommy Helms, Lee May, and Jimmy Stewart. Two months before I was born, Gerónimo was traded to the Royals for Germán Barranca and, in his final season of 1983, entered three games against the Yankees in the late innings… but none of them was the Pine Tar Game.Cedeño debuted with the Astros in 1970, getting the start on June 20 in Atlanta and collecting his first career hit against George Stone, later of the 1973 Mets. Gerónimo did not get an at-bat in the game, but did replace Tommy Davis for defense in Houston's 9-6 victory. So, they even played two years together, with Cedeño remaining in Houston through the 1981 season. The Reds, having gone a full season without anyone named César, and posted the NL West's best record at 66-42 but missed the playoffs because they were second in each half of the strike-split season, traded Ray Knight to Houston to get Cedeño.A thing I didn't realize until now, in 2023, is that the 1981 Reds were managed by John McNamara, who of course managed the 1986 Red Sox in the World Series where Knight was the MVP. That 1981 Cincinnati team also included George Foster, who was released by the 1986 Mets, Bruce Berenyi, who didn't pitch for the 1986 Mets after July, and a two-time ex-Met named (checks notes) Tom Seaver, who was on the 1986 Red Sox but didn't pitch in the playoffs.Cedeño didn't play much for McNamara, though, because the Reds canned him in July. Like Gerónimo, when Cedeño left Cincinnati, he wound up in Missouri. In 1985, Cedeño was traded to the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Mark Jackson at the then-extant August trade deadline, and all he did there was hit .434/.463/.750 with six homers in 28 games to help St. Louis win the East over the Mets by three games. Fat lot of good it did in the playoffs, where Cedeño was a combined 4-for-27 between the NLCS and World Series, and the Cardinals lost to the Royals in the Fall Classic. In 1986, Cedeño wrapped up his career as a member of the Dodgers, with his last game coming on June 2 at Veterans Stadium. He went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in a 13-2 Los Angeles loss.Just to get it straight once and for all, here are the National League Gold Glove outfielders in the 1970s.1972: Cedeño, Roberto Clemente, Willie Davis1973: Bobby Bonds, Cedeño, Davis1974: Bonds, Cedeño, Gerónimo1975: Cedeño, Gerónimo, Garry Maddox1976: Cedeño, Gerónimo, Maddox1977: Gerónimo, Maddox, Dave ParkerThat's half the outfield Gold Gloves in the league, over a six-year span, to two Dominicans named César, both of whom started in Houston and then went on to Cincinnati and played almost entirely before I was born. I'm gonna forgive myself for mixing them up in my mind. It's hard enough out here dealing with all the contemporary Wills Smith: Will Smith and Will Smith, neither of whom is even the most famous Will Smith, nor even the most famous Will Smith in baseball – if you include the proposed name of Penn's baseball field in a quote that Quakers right fielder Kevin McCabe gave to Willets Pen musicologist Ryan Kelly back in 2000 in The Daily Pennsylvanian when the new Penn field opened under a radio station billboard featuring the Fresh Prince.I actually felt they should have named the field Will Smith Field at Q102 Stadium. We need to get a Penn baseball sign up there or something like that. I was joking around with the guys, saying, “If you ever lose focus, look at the smiling Will Smith and you can't be upset.”No word on if Chris Rock is to be awarded an honorary degree by Princeton in light of this information. This almanac episode dives into the folklore of February through the lens of the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia on February 15th, tracing the themes of birth, milk, wolves, wildness, purification, death, twilight, and thunder through the month's other pagan holidays, including St. Brigid's day on February 1st, Candlemas / Gromnica / Perkunas Day on February 2nd, and Scandinavian St. Peter Hotstone on February 22nd. This month's episode asks what the notion of purification might mean in a pagan context, and suggests it may mean facing the shadow parts of ourselves that we tend to project onto animals (and women) so we can ritually integrate them, clarifying and owning our role as powerfully in-between creatures in a powerfully in-between world. Important dates: February 1: Brigid's Day / Bride (Ireland / Scotland) February 2: Candlemas (Christian) / Gromnica (Slavic) / Perkunas day (Lithuania) / Perun's Day (Belarus) February 14: St. Valentine's day February 15: Lupercalia February 21: Mardi Gras / end of Carnivale / Start of Lent February 22: St. Peter Hot-stone Listen to the February Almanac playlist on Tidal: https://tidal.com/browse/playlist/4c148b82-bfe5-46cf-ba26-63b7bc2a7acd Listen to the February Almanac playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2QSKLQ8WeAq9v26NWfpTtX?si=33e31c5e2fe74971 Music in this episode: “Lupercalia” by Faun Buy Faun's music: https://shop.faun-music.com/ “Värgsangen” by Jonna Jinton More Jonna Jinton music: https://www.youtube.com/user/jonnajinton Buy Jonna Jinton's art: https://jonnajintonsweden.com/ “Ulvetimme” (The Hour of the Wolf) Maria Franz and Christopher Juul Buy Heilung's (Maria Franz and Christopher Juul) music: https://heilung.bandcamp.com/ “Mary's Keen” by Noirin Ni Riain Buy this track: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/marys-keen/992023961?i=992023970 Buy Noirin Ni Riain's music: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/stor-amhran/41446103 “Grá” by Wardruna Buy Wardruna music and merch: https://wardrunashop.com/collections/music Buy Wardruna digital tracks: https://wardruna.bandcamp.com/music Opening theme: "Forest March" by Sylvia Woods Buy Sylvia Woods' music: www.harpcenter.com/category/harp-cds Sources for this episode: Watch Ronja Robbersdaughter: https://fsharetv.io/watch/ronja-robbersdaughter-episode-1-tt0088015 Watch Wolf Walkers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_Z_tybgPgg Emperors of Rome Podcast, Lupercalia episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/episode-cxxxv-lupercalia/id850148806?i=1000465237605 History and Folklore Podcast: Medieval Wolves episode: https://historyandfolklorepodcast.libsyn.com/medieval-wolves Medieval Folklore: A Guide to Myths, Legends, Tales, Beliefs, and Customs edited by Carl Lindahl, John McNamara, and John Lindow: entry: “Wolf [Canis Lupus] and Werewolf” The Nordic Animist Year (book) by Rune Rasmussen Candlelight Tales Podcast: Brigid episode: https://soundcloud.com/candlelittales/episode-7-brigid Transcript: Welcome to the podcast. This is the February Almanac episode  of Fair Folk called Wolf Milk. In these Almanac episodes, I comb through European calendar custom. that is folklore relating to the cycle of the year, typically with a focus on Northern Europe. And I share what I find with you to help you orient the month ahead. Equipped with knowledge of nourishing traditions that can help reconnect you to the natural cycles of the year to land and the life in the plants, animals, our bodies, and ourselves. Seasonal folklore and festivals call us back into community with all beings on the earth in its regular spinning wheel of life and death. And they help us to tend through ritual, our ties to our kin of all species, both our ancestral kin and our future kin to come. The recovery of European traditional cultures, the ones that privilege relationality, interconnection and respect for all beings, which you might call indigenous cultures, is so early in its stages.

Dairy advisor, John McNamara, and Shinagh dairy manager, Kevin Ahern, join Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast to discuss the system of pushing milk solids per hectare from grazed grass and low levels of supplementary feeds. John explains that since cows started milking on farm in 2012, the focus has been on converting grazed grass to milk solids with a low reliance on purchased feed. Over the last number of years, milk solids has been 420-440 kg milk solids per cow from less than 500 kg concentrate and milk solids per ha of 1,100 kg. Kevin suggests small tweaks such as the addition of more clover to grazing swards as well as being more selective with culling poorer yielding cows can lift milk solids per cow. John explains that chemical Nitrogen has reduced from the traditional 250 kg to 178 kg in 2021, and a target of 150 kg in 2022. Kevin quantifies what this looks like practically: all paddocks get 60 kg N by April and subsequently, paddocks with >15% clover will get 8-9 kg Nitrogen and paddocks with >20% clover no further Nitrogen is spread. Both John and Kevin explain their cautious approach to reducing chemical Nitrogen as grass needs Nitrogen to grow and, unless clover content is sufficient, Nitrogen application is essential. When Chester Weger went to trial in 1961, it was heralded by the media as the “Trial of the Century.” Throngs of people, ranging from hungry journalists to curious citizens, lined up outside the LaSalle County Courthouse in Ottawa, Illinois to try and get a coveted seat in the gallery. The quiet Illinois Valley community had never seen a spectacle of this kind. The press, armed with giant cameras and blinding flashbulbs, waited for the police to pull up and escort the accused into the courtroom. The Weger family had pooled what few financial resources they had to hire Chester an attorney – John McNamara. But even with a fine lawyer like McNamara, Chester was facing a prosecution, with its vast resources, that was interested in nothing less than the death penalty, execution by 50,000 volts. Three women were dead, and someone needed to pay. The public needed their pound of flesh and the State needed to put this case to rest. After a three-week trial, the jury returned its verdict: Guilty. But the question that haunted jurors long after the trial had ended was whether or not the right man had paid…Those doubts were evidenced by the fact that the jury elected not to sentence Chester Weger to the electric chair, as the State had demanded…Just in case they got it wrong.  It's likely his resolve to prove his innocence that has kept Chester alive all these years. For 62 years and counting, Chester Weger has been waiting for that evidence, that full picture, to finally emerge and definitively reveal that YES. . . they got it wrong and real killers have never been brought to justice. Andy and Whitny dive into the trial of the century and discuss what the jurors were never told.
