Captain Tammie Jo Shults, author of Nerves of Steel, is a Naval aviator and retired Southwest Airlines Captain who received nationwide acclaim when she and her Southwest Airlines crew successfully landed a passenger-filled Boeing 737 that suffered catastrophic engine failure mid-flight. Tammie Jo's previous career in the US Navy as one of the first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots gave her plenty of experience in aviation and leadership, which she took to Southwest Airlines when she left the Navy in 1995.  Tammie Jo joins me today to discuss how she came to be interested in pursuing a career as a pilot but why it was such a challenge to be taken seriously as a woman and have her application considered by the US Navy. She shares details of her daily routine on the days that she is scheduled to fly and why she always carves out some quiet time at the start of her day to read and share passages from the scriptures with her family. Tammie Jo also discusses the events of April 17, 2018, when the plane she was flying suffered severe damage and how her faith, experience, and training allowed her to manage the events and be emotionally present for the passengers and crew in the immediate aftermath.  “Hope changes people: when you have a plan and a destination you need to communicate it” - Tammie Jo Shults This week on The Wow Factor: The trajectory changing decision Tammie Jo's parents made to help her thrive at school The advice from her mother that helped her fit in at Bootcamp What it's like to land an airplane on an aircraft carrier and how her decision loop works Why she left the Navy and joined Southwest Airlines The power of the generosity ripple The importance of open lines of communication Why calm was a gift in the cockpit of Flight 1380 What a sense of community does during a stressful incident and the parallels with the parable of the Good Samaritan Why Tammie Jo felt moved to connect with passengers after the plane landed Tammie Jo Shults' Words of Wisdom: The good habits, hope, and heroes that influence us every day become instincts, and it is essential to understand as a leader that how you behave in turn, influences and affects other people.  Connect with Tammie Jo Shults: Captain Shults' Website  Facebook Captain Shults Instagram Captain Shults Twitter Captain Shults Connect with The WOW Factor: The WOW Factor Website Connect with Brad Formsma via email Brad Formsma on LinkedIn Brad Formsma on Instagram Brad Formsma on Facebook Brad Formsma on Twitter

Olivia has been globe-trotting (nation-trotting?) nearly as much as Nicole these days, but she has had time to binge season 3 of Regency-era sex-sation Bridgerton (and do her laundry). Nicole is still on a thriller book-kick, devouring Nerves of Steel about pilot Tammie Jo Shults and her daring emergency landing, and she and Shauna both consumed some Glen Powell content recently. Somehow that leads to a vote on which anthropormorphic rodent is the hottest, and sorry to say, but Glen came in last place. Then it's on to the heart of this episode: celebrating Pride Month while looking back at the highs and lows of how pop culture has represented members of the LGBTQ community. From the ground-breaking 1968 movie The Queen to the 1990s and the increasing acceptance of gay characters on television to recent high profile movies like Moonlight, the Junkies talk about how much representation has increased - and how there is still so much room for improvement. We have all new Patreon tiers! For the second episode of the Fearless ‘Summer Encore' series, I wanted to feature one of my favorite guests who I get to serve  with while I'm in Alaska with Samaritan's Purse. “Nerves of steel.” That's how many people described Tammie Jo Shults in 2018 after she landed a Southwest Airlines plane that had lost an engine. But even before that fateful day, Tammie Jo had a fearless faith that took her from a farm in Texas to being one of the US Navy's first female fighter jet pilots.  I had the honor of speaking with Tammie Jo as she visited military couples at Samaritan's Purse's Operation Heal Our Patriots. In today's podcast episode, I chat with Dr. Jim Afremow and Phil White who have written an excellent book to be released in December 2021, called The Leaders Mind.  I tap into their expertise to help you, where we discuss modern sport psychology as well as different elements of the book and link it to mental toughness.  For example, we chat about a pilot, Tammie Jo Shults and how she took control of a stricken plane when there was an engine failure and how she went on to manage the situation and herself.   We discuss Nic Gill the All Blacks Strength and Conditioning coach and the All Blacks dedication to continued excellence.  Lastly, we talk about Donald Robertson, an advocate of using stoicism to achieve your goals. Key Takeaways include: To think like a champion in your sport you must look to get the best out of yourself. There's no health without mental health, and obviously without mental health you're not going to find peak performance. A common misconception is that you're either born with confidence or you're not.  It can be developed and improved upon. Tammie's ability to trust her training and go into “autopilot”, as well as her interpersonal confidence shone through in such a difficult situation. Nic Gil and the All Blacks have a mindset to keep on learning and that they can always achieve more. In Sports Psychology we often mention “controlling the controllables” which is a stoic philosophy. Tammie Jo Shults was accepted by the Navy for Aviation Officer Candidate School at Naval Air Station Pensacola. After completing the twelve-week course and receiving her commission as an Ensign on June 21, 1985, Shults attended flight training, also at NAS Pensacola, where she trained and qualified for her pilot's wings in the T-34 . After Pensacola, Shults was stationed at Naval Air Station Chase Field as a flight instructor for the T-2 Buckeye. She later qualified in the A-7 Corsair II with training (RAG) squadron VA-122 at Naval Air Station Lemoore. Her next assignment was VAQ-34, a Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron at the Pacific Missile Test Center located at Point Mugu, California. When the squadron relocated to NAS Lemoore in 1991, Shults became an instructor under the command of CAPT Rosemary Mariner, the first woman to command an operational air squadron. Shults became one of the first female naval aviators to qualify in the F/A-18 Hornet when the squadron transitioned from the EA-6B Prowler. During Operation Desert Storm, the combat exclusion policy at that time prevented women from flying combat sorties, so Shults flew training missions as an instructor aggressor pilot for naval aviators. She finished her tour of duty in March 1993. In December 1995, she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander (LCDR), then transitioned to the Navy Reserve, where she flew the F/A-18 Hornet and EA-6B Prowler until August 2001.  After leaving the Navy, Shults joined Southwest Airlines as a pilot, flying a part-time schedule of 8–10 days per month so that she could also raise a family following her marriage to fellow naval aviator Dean Shults. On April 17, 2018, while Shults was captain in command of Flight 1380 from New York to Dallas, an engine fan blade on the Boeing 737 failed and flying debris damaged the left side of the fuselage and one side window; the window failed, causing the plane to decompress. One passenger was partially sucked through the damaged window and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Shults made an emergency descent and landed in Philadelphia. Her actions, calm demeanor, and competence during the emergency were noted by Southwest Airlines officials and passengers as well as Chesley Sullenberger, another commercial airline and former military pilot who controlled a similar situation in 2009 on US Airways Flight 1549. Shults later revealed that she had not intended to be the pilot of that flight, but had swapped the shift with her husband. In 1994, she married Dean Shults, at the time a fellow naval aviator in the A-7 Corsair II, who also joined Southwest Airlines as a pilot that year. Together, they have two children. The couple lives in Boerne, Texas. Shults is a devout Christian who teaches Sunday school, and helps the needy, such as internally displaced persons from Hurricane Rita. Shults wrote a book about Southwest Airlines flight 1380, Nerves of Steel, which was released in the United States on October 8, 2019.

Fear and anxiety often worm their way into our lives, and it is easy to give into them. But we have a mighty God on our side, who replaces fear with a beautiful peace that reminds us everything will turn out exactly the way He intends it. Country music artist Sara Evans knew as a young girl that she was “Born to Fly,” because God had called her to a music career. And as Sara looks back on defining moments of her career and her journeys with family and faith, she can trace the moments when fear would try to take over but God gave her the resilience to push through. Growing up in Los Angeles with a passion for helping others, actor and singer Caitlin Crosby learned early on that real beauty and character are found in our flaws. As she prayed for God to show her how to give to others, Caitlin met a talented couple who helped turn her heart for helping into a real-life mission: a jewelry-for-good business called The Giving Keys, which helps people transition out of homelessness. Caitlin believes that embracing the things that scare us can help us uncover our purpose. And as she shares in her new book You are the Key, she’s seen that paying forward a word of encouragement, whether you sleep in a mansion or a cardboard box, can go a long way in helping others—and ourselves—keep reaching for faith and courage. Today we salute a veteran who exemplifies everything that our armed forces stand for. This Former US Navy Aviator personifies the Honor, Courage, and Commitment of the US Military every day. Captain Tammie Jo Shults of the United States Navy is a Captain for Southwest Airlines, where she flies Boeing 737's daily. It was in this position, at the controls of Flight 1380, two years ago on Tuesday April 17th, 2018, where Captain Shults safely and confidently made an emergency landing in her fully loaded aircraft saving the lives of her passengers and crew. Sadly one passenger was killed when an exploding jet engine sent shrapnel into the airplane interior, puncturing the skin and blowing out a window. But even with the knowledge that her airplane was severely damaged, down one engine, and that there were a number of injuries aboard including some serious, Captain Shults commanded that airliner to a safe landing in Philadelphia. A native of New Mexico, Shults graduated college in 1983 with degrees in both Biology and Agribusiness from MidAmerica Nazarene University before joining the Navy. Shults always dreamt of becoming a pilot, and initially applied for the Air Force but was unable to test to become a pilot because the Air Force was not accepting female pilot applicants then. The US Navy welcomed her, and she went on to become one of the first female fighter jet pilots in US Navy history. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander during her 10 year career with the distinction of being THE FIRST woman to fly the Navy's F/A-18 Fighter Jet and was a member of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 34 when she finished her career with the Navy in 1993 and accepted a position with Southwest Airlines. Now a Captain with the airline and a mother of 2, she lives in Texas with her husband Dean who is also a pilot. Captain Tammie Jo Shults is a hero and an inspiration to an entire nation.

Before becoming a hero during a catastrophic moment on one Southwest flight, Tammie Jo Shults spent a lifetime faithfully serving the Lord as a pilot. In a lot of ways, she had to blaze her own trail in the world of aviation and she faced major obstacles along the way. From a pilot telling her to “find something women can do” at a career fair to being rejected by the Air Force and Army, Tammie Jo relied on the Lord to guide her into a successful career as a pilot for the U.S. Navy.  After her time in the military, Tammi Jo spent time as a commercial airline pilot. During one flight in April of 2018, a catastrophic failure occurred on the Southwest aircraft Tammie Jo was flying. Her composure, ability as a pilot, and reliance on the Lord made her able to successfully land the badly disabled plane.    In this episode of the Bible Connection podcast, Tammie Jo talks about how her devotion to the Word of God and love for the Lord has guided everything she has done. Despite the many adversities and obstacles she has faced, and overcome, in her life, Tammie Jo stood firm in her identity as someone who is loved by God.    Listen to Tammi Jo’s routine for spending time with the Bible every morning and how it has impacted her entire life. She shares about the importance of knowing and reading Scripture, God’s love letter to you as she calls it, and the ways it can change and shape your understanding of the world.    Episode Links   Nerves of Steel - Tammie Jo Shults book   Recommended Resource   Premier Collection Bibles  Heirloom-quality Premier Collection Bibles feature hand-bound goatskin covers, premium European paper, 3 satin ribbons, and more classic touches that add to the experience of reading God’s word. About 20 minutes into a flight from New York to Dallas, an engine explosion rocked Southwest Flight 1380, putting the lives of almost 150 passengers in grave danger. “It felt like we’d been hit by another aircraft, the jolt was so violent,” pilot Tammie Jo Shults said. “And I remember thinking, ‘This could be the day that I meet my Maker.’” Captain Shults will share how her faith in God helped her stay calm when everything spun out of control. She’ll also share the lesser-known story of how she trusted God with the discrimination she faced as a female pilot in the Navy. In the middle of chaos, Tammie Jo’s conversation with God gave her peace during the crisis and helped reveal a solution to landing the plane. Retired Air Force pilot and former Vietnam POW Col. Writer, coach, consultant and Wild Woman, Mary Daniels, is our guest this week. She talks about the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create change in the world and their values and behaviour. In the Show… Judith’s car has sailed through the MoT but she discovered some bad small business news down at the garage while she was there. She reflects on Twitter in the week of her 10th Twitterversary. Nicola’s enjoyed another sociable week of dining out, Reading Club, Mothers’ Day pampering, ouzo and octopus and a birthday party. She has her eye on a chap who is both taciturn and saturnine and has his own boat AND his own taverna! What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith’s fire was fuelled by last Friday’s recording session with upcoming podcast guests 9-12 - Rhys, Richard, Alice and Paula. Nicola’s spoken to Justin Brooke about her Facebook Ads account suspension and he’s helped her to rationalise it unemotionally and to find the workaround. Focus of the Week: Mary Daniels – Normal People, Noble Causes Mary's talk is about the dangers of not knowing who you are and the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create change in the world with their values and behaviour. Noble causes are served by perfectly normal human beings who behave in exceptional ways and this isn't limited to organisations either, it can apply to us working at home alone. Ask yourself about your daily habits: Am I being true to who I am? Would anyone looking in from the outside know that? What compromises do I make, how do I let my values slip, how often do I evaluate that so I can bring myself back on track? Mary’s first book is published by Hay House and called Wild Awakening, and she’s working on her next. Find out more at MaryDaniels.co.uk Words of the Week Nicola picks Leisure and Judith goes for Dreams. Project Updates Own It! The Podcast’s download numbers continue to impress both Nicola and Judith and their best guess is that it is a second spike attributable to Radio Public who reward podcasters who send them traffic. Nicola’s writing a sales letter, and her 30 Day Challenge people continue to get excellent results and ROI. One of them was also featured by Radio Public in their Indies to Watch spotlight. Judith continues to make good progress with her Creating the Impossible Challenge, her Blogfest. Now all 52 blog posts are published and all 52 podcasts too. Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola is impressed (again) by Iain Banks, having re-read The Wasp Factory in her Reading Club. Both Judith and Nicola had read it before but since it was published in 1984, neither of them can remember it! Judith is impressed by three women – Sarah Sellers who finished second in the Boston Marathon, Tammie Jo Shults the pilot who landed the South West Airlines plane which lost an engine mid-flight and Doreen Lawrence who never gave up hope of achieving justice for her son, Stephen. The flight was en route to Dallas Love airport from New York City, and had to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia. Shults, 56, kept her cool during an incredibly intense situation, audio from her conversation with air traffic controllers reveals, while many passengers posted on social media that they were scared these were their last moments. She, with the help of the co-pilot and the rest of the crew, landed the plane safely.   ******* Cornelius Coffey (September 6, 1903 - March 2, 1994) In 1938, Coffey established one of the first African American-owned and certified flight schools in America. The Coffey School of Aeronautics was located at Harlem Airport in Oaklawn, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. He also invented a carburetor heater to prevent icing, and a variation of it is still being used. Coffey recruited Clyde Hampton, Willa Brown -- a former student who later became his wife -- and other pioneer black pilots as instructors. As a consequence, Chicago was considered the leading city for black pilot training prior to World War II. Many of the original Tuskegee Airmen got their initial training at the Coffey school. In 1939, Coffey, along with Willa Brown, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, and Enoch P. Waters formed the National Airmen's Association of America. The main goal of this club was to expose African Americans to the field of aviation.
