Juristen Maria, 28, nekades IVF på grund av sin cp-skada. Men hon vägrade ge upp drömmen om barn och tog strid mot kliniken. Här är hennes historia. Den här säsongen av Funk – det sociala dilemmat, hör vi Maria Chölers personliga och gripande berättelse om att nekas rätten till IVF-behandling, och om hur hon använde sin juridiska expertis för att vinna sitt livs viktigaste mål.En dramatisk start på livetÅret är 1992. Maria ska födas genom ett planerat kejsarsnitt, men allt förändras i sista sekunden. Förlossningen blir akut och extremt komplicerad. Maria drabbas av syrebrist, dras ut utan hjärtslag och är kliniskt död. Läkarna lyckas rädda hennes liv, men syrebristen lämnar efter sig en neurologisk skada: en cp-skada.Trots sin funktionsvariation växer Maria upp i en stöttande familj utanför Göteborg där inga drömmar är för stora. Hon tar studenten, reser runt i världen, tar en juristexamen i Uppsala och börjar arbeta med juridik. Hon vägrar att låta sin cp-skada begränsa henne. Men det finns en sak hon har drömt om i hela sitt liv: att bli mamma.Den psykosociala bedömningen: ”Du är inte lämplig”Eftersom Maria vill skaffa barn på egen hand, med ett starkt stöd från sina föräldrar, vänder hon sig till en privat klinik för att påbörja en IVF-behandling. Den medicinska utredningen ser ljus ut och Maria är fylld av förväntan. Men när det är dags för den psykosociala bedömningen förändras stämningen drastiskt.Istället för de vanliga ett eller två samtalen tvingas Maria gå till psykologen fyra gånger. Vid det sista tillfället kräver psykologen dessutom att få träffa Marias mamma. Frustrationen växer, men mitt i orättvisan tänds en glöd i Maria. Hon inser att kliniken inte ser hela henne som människa – de ser bara hennes cp-skada.Kort därefter, mitt under en runda på stan, ringer telefonen. Glädjen blir kortvarig. Beskedet från kliniken slår undan benen på henne: De bedömer henne som inte lämplig att bli förälder.Juristen som bestred beslutetEfter några dagars förtvivlan samlar Maria sina krafter. Som utbildad jurist med flera års erfarenhet vet hon exakt hur man hittar luckor i ett resonemang och bestrider felaktiga beslut. Den här gången handlar det inte om en klient – det handlar om hennes eget framtida barn.Maria överklagar klinikens beslut till Socialstyrelsen och Rättsliga rådet. Hon sätter sig vid datorn, formulerar sig knivskarpt och driver sitt eget fall med allt hon har.Efter en nervös väntan kommer ett brev på posten. Maria öppnar det och möts av det befriande beskedet: Socialstyrelsen går helt på Marias linje och river upp klinikens beslut.Ett mirakel på julaftonTrots segern i Socialstyrelsen ställs Maria inför ett dilemma. Att byta sjukhus skulle innebära nya, långa utredningsköer och samma utmattande bedömningar på nytt. Hon väljer därför att gå tillbaka till samma klinik – men nu med Socialstyrelsens beslut i ryggen.Nu går processen snabbt. En donator hittas och lagom till lucia sätts ägget in. På julafton får Maria beskedet: Hon är gravid på första försöket.Nio månader senare föds hennes son, Manne. Idag är scenen i den stora tvåan utanför Göteborg inte längre en avlägsen fantasi. In this episode, Charles sits down with TJ Horn, a Boston-area drummer who has played with several bands — most notably the critically acclaimed Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys. Beyond his drumming career, TJ is a passionate live music fan who set a personal record in 2025 by attending 75 concerts in a single year. He's also known in certain Boston circles for his live readings of erotic fan fiction. It's a wide-ranging conversation about music, performance, and what it means to love live shows. TJ traces his passion for live music back to a 1994 Depeche Mode concert at the Blockbuster Pavilion in Glen Helen, California — a show his uncle brought him and his family to when he was just 12 years old. That night sparked a lifelong obsession. That same year, his uncle also took him to Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and the legendary Lollapalooza '94 — where TJ saw the Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, L7, and a then-unknown Green Day, just weeks before they exploded in popularity. Over the years, TJ has accumulated remarkable concert stories: chatting with Fred Durst for 40 minutes at Ozzfest while watching Tool, seeing Porno for Pyros perform a surprise acoustic set on a walkway at Lollapalooza '95, and stumbling upon a tiny 40-person Touché Amoré show after standing in the snow for a wristband. His 75-show year in 2025 came about naturally — fueled by a wide network of friends with different musical tastes, a work schedule that freed up his evenings, and a simple philosophy of saying yes when a cheap ticket or a spare invite came along. On the music-making side, TJ is a self-taught drummer who got his start playing along to Green Day and the Ramones in his bedroom as a military kid who had just moved to Boston. He's gone on to play with bands spanning punk, hardcore, and art-rock, including The Martyrs and a rock opera project featuring Amy Winehouse's saxophonist and members of The Replacements. His longest creative relationship has been with Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys — a theatrical "steam crunk" band known for elaborate costumes, steampunk conventions, annual RPM Challenge albums, and now an upcoming horror sci-fi film directed by Walter himself. TJ also speaks fondly of the erotic fan fiction readings that made him unexpectedly famous in Boston's burlesque and cosplay scene — a side gig that started with dramatic readings of bad dating app messages and turned into a crowd-favorite variety act. Day 2916 – Theology Thursday – Ancient Near Eastern Religions versus the God of the Bible Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2916 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2916 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website, theologyinfive.com.   Ancient Near Eastern Religions versus the God of the Bible. The religions of the Ancient Near East form a wide landscape of connected myths, rituals, and divine hierarchies that shaped the worldview of early civilizations. Their gods rose and fell in power, reacted emotionally to events, and relied on worshipers to sustain them. These beliefs created a religious environment built on cycles, fragility, and mutual dependence. The biblical portrayal of Yahweh stands in clear contrast. Scripture presents a God who is self-sufficient, unchanging, and sovereign over creation. Examining these differences clarifies the uniqueness of biblical faith within its ancient setting and helps modern readers understand how Israel's worldview developed in the midst of nations with very different assumptions about the divine realm. The first segment is: The Cyclical Nature of ANE Deities ANE religions anchored their divine stories in the rhythms of the natural world. Gods were believed to participate in the same patterns that shaped human experience. Their power rose and fell with the seasons, crops, weather, and the environment. This worldview created a theological system where even major deities could weaken, die, or disappear, only to return when the cycles of nature renewed themselves. The myths surrounding Inanna and Ishtar reveal this worldview clearly. Their descent into the underworld and eventual return mirrored the cycle of barrenness and renewal that governed agricultural life. Their stories did not present beings who transcended nature but ones who were bound to it. Their vitality could pause or fail, only to be restored when the environment shifted. Egyptian religion expressed a similar idea through the Osiris myth. His murder and restoration aligned with the yearly flooding of the Nile, which created fertile soil for crops. The story served as a theological explanation for agricultural renewal. Osiris did not stand above the cycles of life. He represented them. This pattern appears again and again in ANE pantheons, where divine life and natural life were deeply intertwined. The second segment is: Symbiosis Between Gods and Humans The relationship between the gods and humanity in the ANE was shaped by mutual dependence. The gods depended on humans for food, offerings, honor, and the upkeep of temples. Humans depended on the gods for basic stability, agricultural success, and protection. Religion functioned as a system that maintained cosmic order by ensuring both sides received what they needed. Baal worship in Canaan demonstrates this dynamic. Baal's power and presence were tied to the devotion of his followers. If offerings ceased or rituals were neglected, worshipers feared drought, famine, and ecological collapse. Ugaritic texts describe Baal's strength rising and falling in connection with seasonal struggles against Mot, the god of death. The fortunes of the people depended on Baal's vitality, and Baal's vitality depended on the people. This pattern stretched across Mesopotamia as well. Temples functioned as divine households where priests fed, clothed, and cared for the gods. Worship was not about relationship but maintenance. A god who was not sustained properly could weaken, suffer, or lose influence. These beliefs shaped the ancient expectation that the divine and human worlds were locked in an ongoing exchange of needs and services. The third segment is: The God of the Bible: Transcendent, Stable, and Self-Sufficient The biblical portrait of God stands outside the cycles and limitations that characterized ANE religion. Yahweh does not depend on human worship to sustain His power. He does not rise or fall in strength. His nature remains constant, and His authority extends beyond the boundaries of the natural world. Scripture presents Him as the Creator who governs nature rather than one who participates in its fluctuations. Malachi 3 verse six captures this distinction by declaring that God does not change. The prophets frequently challenge the idea that God requires food or ritual maintenance. Psalm 50 portrays God as the owner of all creation rather than a deity who needs sacrifices for sustenance. Isaiah mocks the absurdity of idols that must be carried because they cannot stand on their own. These passages highlight the difference between the dependent gods of the nations and the self-sufficient God of Israel. Covenant reinforces this distinction. When God binds Himself to Abraham, Moses, or David, His promises flow from His own character and faithfulness rather than human ability to maintain Him. His stability provides a foundation for trust that no ANE god could offer, because their identity and power were subject to the very world they governed. The fourth segment is: Supreme Monotheism and the Divine Council The biblical worldview acknowledges a populated spiritual realm, but it does not portray that realm as harmonious or consistently loyal. Scripture presents a divine council, yet this council reflects a world marked by rebellion and spiritual conflict rather than unity. This stands in sharp contrast with ANE pantheons, where deities had fixed jurisdictions and stable roles. Psalm 82 reveals that members of the divine council failed in their appointed tasks. God confronts them for injustice, corruption, and the oppression of the nations they were meant to govern. Their rebellion is a verdict on their unfaithfulness. The psalm ends with God declaring their coming judgment, making clear that divine beings are not beyond accountability. Genesis 6 describes another rebellion in which the sons of God violate the boundaries God established and bring corruption to humanity. This event shaped the Second Temple Jewish worldview and influenced New Testament writers who saw it as a catastrophic turning point in the history of spiritual conflict. These beings did not act out of ignorance but out of deliberate defiance. The Babel event introduces yet another layer of supernatural rebellion. Deuteronomy 32 verse eight and nine describe God dividing the nations and assigning them under the authority of lesser divine beings. These beings later led their nations into idolatry and spiritual deception, choosing loyalty to their own agendas rather than to the Most High. Their failures explain the origin of the false gods and territorial powers that Israel confronted throughout the Old Testament. The biblical writers describe a supernatural realm that is real, complex, and deeply fractured. God alone stands as the supreme Creator. The other divine beings are not competitors to Him, but they are capable of disobedience, corruption, and rebellion. Unlike ANE pantheons defined by competition between gods of similar rank, the Bible presents defiance of the Most High as the central spiritual crisis in human history. The fifth segment is: Stability Versus Variability in the Divine Realm The gods of the ANE were often unpredictable. Their conflicts explained storms, disasters, and political upheavals. Their emotional reactions shaped the lives of their worshipers, who lived in fear of offending them or failing to provide proper care. This instability was a natural consequence of a pantheon filled with beings shaped by the same vulnerabilities as humans. Yahweh's actions are presented differently. His behavior is anchored in His covenantal character. His judgments are consistent with His purposes rather than expressions of divine mood. His promises stand firm even when humans falter. By presenting God as trustworthy and stable, Scripture establishes a theological foundation that separates Israel's faith from the religions around it. The sixth segment is: The Purpose of Humanity: Servants or Imagers ANE creation stories consistently portray humans as laborers created to meet the needs of the gods. In the Enuma Elish, humans are formed from the blood of Kingu after a divine rebellion. Their function is to relieve the gods of work by maintaining temples and performing essential services. Human worth is connected to usefulness, not intrinsic dignity. The biblical account offers an entirely different vision. Humans are created

Today's SWAPA Number is 10. That's the number of subject matter experts and executives that were on the town hall that took place on July 28th. So for this episode, we are providing you an opportunity to hear that town hall in case you missed the live event, during which we posed questions ranging from SWAPA's relationship with the company to where we are with implementation to the status of our move through the strategic plan. It truly had so much in it that we felt it worthy of a second listen.Four questions did not get addressed on air as we ran out of time and can be found below. It seems there are many more 4 day trips and 4 day reserve blocks in elitt then ever before. I know there is a cap on the percentage of 4 days but it seems to be growing each month. What is causing this? The number of 4-day pairings in the system has increased from ~18% to 20% of the pairing mix which is due to a multitude of reasons, but the increase in ELITT is a combination of vacation shifting to drop more, training bidding + a longer training footprint this year which can lead to two pairings being dropped on each side (whereas the last contract they optimized to the lowest cost/trip pull). Each category is unique, but the upgrade schedule this year has been aggressive so some bases see a full month of pulls to send Pilots to training. In addition, Crew Planning has increased the number of blank lines which means more 4-day pairings get pulled from blank lines for the above reasons that then fall directly into MOT and ELITT opening.   How much does it cost to have the ELITT Red-Filter to actually work?  “Cost" may be difficult to pin down, but there will be additional filtering available across systems in CWA between now and ongoing modernization efforts. Some of the disconnect right now is that there is the contractual definition of "red-eye" which encompasses flights that operate across 0200 domicile time, whereas there are "enterprise red-eyes" that launch after 0200 domicile time, so the CWA system doesn't flag those as "red-eye". We've said multiple times that this is causing confusion and hopefully we'll make progress over time with additional filtering logic that will include all variations of red-eye operations.  If a SWAPA rep were to seek and be hired for a job at HQ SWA, would one open up at SWAPA? Do we have any language in our bylaws to prohibit this or anything planned?  Short answer: yes, a position would open up, but no, we don't have anything on the books that stops someone from taking that job in the first place. The mechanism is our Constitution that defines membership classes based on who you work for and in what capacity. If a Pilot moves into a management, executive, or supervisory role at Southwest, they're no longer classified as an Active Member — they become an Executive Member. Executive Members aren't eligible to hold elected or appointed positions in SWAPA, period. So in the event that job offer is accepted, that person is no longer eligible to serve at SWAPA in any capacity. The vacancy gets filled the same way we fill any other vacancy as outlined in the Constitution.  While we don't have an enforceable rule that says SWAPA personnel can't apply for or accept a management job at Southwest like you're describing, Section 10, Appendix A of the Policy Manual speaks to the Code of Ethics and Conduct Policy. This 'pledge' in paragraph IV says (in part) that no individual covered by this policy may accept a supervisory position within Southwest Airlines or its subsidiaries for a period of at least twenty-four (24) months following the completion of SWAPA service.  So it's not a fully closed loop. It's a fair thing to raise, and it's exactly the kind of item our Constitution Review Committee reviews every year before the May Board meeting. Day 2915 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 146:1-10 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2915 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2915 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Sovereign Creator and the Frailty of Princes – Unveiling the Eternal Helper On our previous podcast, on Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Thirteen, we reached a momentous milestone in our journey through the Book of Psalms, as we closed out Psalm One Hundred Forty-Five—the very last psalm explicitly attributed to King David in the Psalter. In that glorious acrostic hymn, we listened as the old warrior king handed off the baton of praise to every generation, exalting Yahweh's unsearchable greatness, His open-handed generosity, and His everlasting kingdom. Today, as we step onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Fifteen of our trek, we enter a brand-new, breathtaking chapter in the Psalms. We are beginning what biblical scholars call the "Final Hallel"—a grand, five-psalm crescendo comprised of Psalms One Hundred Forty-Six through One Hundred Fifty. Every single one of these five concluding psalms begins and ends with the majestic Hebrew command: Hallelu-YAH—Praise the Lord! We are moving from the individual testimony of David into the unanimous, triumphant doxology of the entire redeemed assembly. Today, we step directly onto the trail of Psalm One Hundred Forty-Six, verses one through ten, discovering where true human hope must be anchored. The first segment is: The Unceasing Vow: Praise with Every Dying Breath Let us open our ears to the exuberant opening movement of this psalm, where the writer groups his initial thoughts together in verse one and verse two. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord as long as I live. I will sing praises to my God with my dying breath. The psalmist begins with a passionate, double declaration of praise, commanding his own inner being: “Praise the Lord, O my soul!” He vows to pour out praise to Yahweh as long as he lives, continuing this song of adoration even with his very dying breath. To fully grasp the theological depth of these opening lines, we must view them through the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient mindset, human life-breath—known as neshamah or ruach—was not merely a biological phenomenon. It was the direct, miraculous gift of life imparted into human nostrils by the Sovereign Creator Himself. The gods of the surrounding pagan nations were lifeless idols, carved from stone or wood, completely unable to breathe, speak, or grant life to their worshippers. But Yahweh is the vibrant, uncreated Source of all animated existence! Therefore, as long as divine breath fills human lungs, that breath is designed to return to its Source in continuous, grateful worship. The psalmist pledges that even when physical strength wanes, and the body approaches the grave, the final sound slipping past human lips will be an anthem of praise to the King of heaven. The second segment is: The Folly of Trusting Mortals: Princes Returning to Dust The narrative takes a stark, brilliant turn in verse three and verse four, contrasting the eternal God with the extreme frailty of human political power. Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human can save you. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Here, the psalmist issues an urgent, unvarnished warning: “Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human can save you.” He explains that when their breath departs, these leaders return to the dust of the earth, and on that exact day, all their grand political, economic, and military plans dissolve into absolute nothingness. To truly appreciate this warning, we must examine it through the cosmic framework of ancient history. In the ancient Near East, kings, princes, and emperors routinely claimed divine status, presenting themselves as living gods or unique representatives of powerful spiritual principalities. Subjects were tempted to place their ultimate hope, national security, and personal salvation in these powerful monarchs. But the psalmist strips away all royal pretense! He deliberately uses the Hebrew word adam for human, reminding us that even the most powerful prince is made of adamah—mere dust from the ground. When a mortal leader dies, his spirit leaves him, his body decays back into the soil, and every policy, treaty, and military campaign he engineered vanishes instantly. In a world full of shifting geopolitics, human arrogance, and ideological promises, true wisdom urges us never to anchor our ultimate trust in mortal leaders who cannot even save themselves. The third segment is: The Cosmic Creator: The Unshakeable Anchor of Hope Having exposed the futility of trusting in mortals, the psalmist points us directly to the unshakeable anchor of true joy, combining the logical thoughts found in verse five and verse six. But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever. The text bursts forth with a glorious beatitude, declaring, “Joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” The writer then grounds this joy in Yahweh's cosmic credentials, proclaiming that He made heaven, earth, the sea, and everything in them, and that He keeps every promise forever! This is a massive, explicit claim of supreme cosmic authority! In the ancient divine-council worldview, foreign nations believed that their localized deities ruled specific, limited domains—Baal ruled the skies and weather, Yam ruled the chaotic seas, and Mot ruled the underworld. But the psalmist declares that Yahweh, the God of Jacob, is the singular, ultimate Architect of all three cosmic tiers: heaven, earth, and the roaring oceans! While human rulers break treaties, default on promises, and pass away into dust, the Creator of the cosmos remains forever faithful. His character is unchangeable, His power is limitless, and His covenants are backed by the full, eternal authority of His heavenly throne. The fourth segment is: The King of Justice: Liberator, Healer, and Protector The psalmist now unfolds the practical, compassionate expression of Yahweh's rule on earth, weaving together the contiguous thoughts in verse seven, verse eight, and verse nine. He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked. Look at this magnificent, nine-fold manifesto of divine justice! Yahweh gives justice to the oppressed, food to the hungry, freedom to prisoners, vision to the blind, and comfort to those weighed down by life's heavy burdens. He loves the godly, protects vulnerable foreigners, and sustains orphans and widows, while actively dismantling and frustrating the schemes of the wicked. This passage provides a staggering portrait of divine kingdom ethics. In the ancient world, pagan deities and earthly tyrants catered exclusively to the elite, exploiting the poor, the stranger, and the fatherless to build their monuments. But Yahweh proves His supreme kingship precisely by championing the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society! Notice how every single action is prefixed with the divine name: The Lord frees, The Lord opens eyes, The Lord lifts up, The Lord protects! This list directly anticipates the miracle ministry of Jesus Christ, who entered human history to fulfill these exact words—healing the blind, feeding the hungry, liberating spiritual captives, and bringing the gospel to the poor. Furthermore, while Yahweh embraces the humble, He sets Himself in direct opposition to the arrogant, ensuring that their oppressive plans will ultimately crumble into chaos. The fifth segment is: The Eternal Reign: Zion's Unending Anthem The psalm reaches its ultimate, triumphant crescendo in verse ten,...

A picture of the odometer and an estimation of next years mileage will be sent by the driver. Day 2895 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 139:7-12 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2895 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day two thousand eight hundred ninety-five of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: Shivering in the Omnipresence – No Hiding Places in Cosmic Geography In our previous expedition along this ancient, sacred trail, we stepped into the breathtaking opening movement of Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Nine, verses one through six. We explored the terrifying, yet deeply comforting reality of God's absolute omniscience. We learned that the Creator has meticulously mined the deepest shafts of our hearts, intimately tracking our sitting down, and our standing up. We marveled at how He has hemmed us in, constructing a protective, supernatural perimeter around our vulnerabilities, and resting His hand of covenant blessing firmly upon our heads. We experienced a beautiful sense of spiritual vertigo, realizing that the infinite intelligence of our King completely surpasses our human comprehension. Today, my friends, we take our next deliberate, awe-inspiring steps up the mountain pass. We are continuing our exploration of this magnificent psalm, focusing our attention on Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Nine, verses seven through twelve, in the New Living Translation. If the first six verses established that God knows everything about us, this next stanza reveals why that is a cosmic necessity. We are moving from the infinite depth of the divine mind, to the infinite width of the divine presence. David is going to take us on a rapid, macro-cosmic tour across the vertical and horizontal axes of reality, demonstrating that there is absolutely no hiding place in all of cosmic geography. Let us step onto the trail, and discover the beautiful impossibility of escaping the Sovereign King. The first segment is: The Vertical Axis: Piercing the Realms of Heaven and Sheol Let us listen to the opening lines of this cosmic pursuit, as recorded in verse seven and verse eight. I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. In these grouped, contiguous thoughts, David confronts a reality that completely upends the ancient world's understanding of space and spiritual authority. He cries out, “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!” To fully grasp the radical, polemical nature of verse seven and verse eight, we must view them through the brilliant lens of the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient Near East, the surrounding pagan nations operated under a strict system of cosmic geography. They believed that the spiritual realm was deeply fragmented, carved up into competitive, localized jurisdictions controlled by different, territorial elohim—the rebel sons of God who were assigned to the nations after the Tower of Babel. If you were in Egypt, you were under the eye of Ra and Osiris; if you crossed over into Canaan, you were in the domain of Baal and Asherah. Furthermore, these gods were vertically limited. Baal was the lord of the high skies, but he had no power in the underworld. Mot was the terrifying king of the grave, ruling the domain of death where the living gods could not interfere. The pagan world assumed that if you traveled far enough, or if you descended into the darkness of death, you could successfully escape the gaze of a specific national deity. But David stands as a theological revolutionary, and he completely demolishes this fragmented, pagan worldview. He looks at the vertical axis of the cosmos and declares, “If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.” Think about the absolute totality of this claim. “Heaven”—the Shamayim—represented the supreme, radiant assembly room of the divine council, the very zenith of cosmic light and order. If David climbs to the highest spiritual heights, Yahweh is effortlessly enthroned there, presiding over the loyal heavenly host. But then David flips the map completely, looking into the pitch-black abyss of the “grave”—or Sheol, the underworld. In pagan thought, Sheol was a garbage dump of forgotten souls, a territory completely isolated from the gods of life. Yet David declares that if he makes his bed in the deep recesses of the underworld, he will open his eyes and find Yahweh standing right there next to him! There is no independent dark zone, and no demonic underworld, that can construct a legal barrier to lock the Creator out. Yahweh's jurisdiction is absolute, unmediated, and completely seamless from the highest celestial throne, to the deepest subterranean tomb. The rebel principalities of death have no private closets where they can hide from the King of Glory. The second segment is: The Horizontal Axis: Overruling the Farthest Horizons Having mapped the vertical dimensions of reality, the psalmist turns his attention to the horizontal limits of the earth, combining his logical thoughts in verse nine and verse ten. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. David paints a breathtaking, cinematic visual of rapid, long-distance transit across the globe: “If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” In the poetic vocabulary of ancient Israel, the “wings of the morning” referred to the first, blinding rays of the dawning sun, leaping up over the eastern horizon at the speed of light. Conversely, the “farthest oceans” referred to the western horizon, the deep, unpredictable, and highly dangerous waters of the Mediterranean Sea and whatever lay beyond. David is mapping out an extreme, east-to-west trajectory. He is saying, “What if I could capture a sunbeam in the east, fly across the entire planet in a fraction of a second, and drop myself down into the most remote, uncharted wilderness of the western sea?” In the ancient mind, traveling to the farthest oceans meant crossing the boundary lines into disinherited pagan lands, crossing into territories heavily fortified by the rebel spirits of the nations. It was the ultimate frontier of chaos. In Canaanite mythology, the deep sea was the personal playground of Yamm, the god of primordial chaos and liquid destruction. A traveler who ventured into the far oceans expected to find themselves completely abandoned, left to the cruel whims of foreign elements and hostile deities. But notice the beautiful, protective reality that intercepts David in verse ten: “even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” The phrase “even there” is a thunderous declaration of cosmic ownership. There are no blank spots on Yahweh's map. There are no international waters where His sovereignty doesn't apply. You can travel to the most distant, unchurched, and spiritually dark coordinate on the globe, and you will not find an empty space. Instead, you will find that the personal, loving hand of your Creator has already beaten you there! He doesn't just watch you from a celestial distance; His hand is actively present to guide your steps, and His raw, warrior strength is right beside you to support your weariness. The rebel principalities have no exclusive legal zones where they can isolate a child of God from the perimeter defense of the Almighty. The horizontal limits of the earth are merely a carpet unrolled beneath the feet of the King. The third segment is: The Spiritual Shroud: Dismantling the Canopy of Darkness The narrative moves from the physical limitations of space, to the psychological and spiritual attempt to find a hiding place under the shroud of darkness. The psalmist groups these contiguous thoughts in verse eleven and verse twelve. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. David explores a deeply human, and highly desperate temptation: “I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.”...
