Midlife is being redefined at a moment when women are questioning outdated narratives around aging, productivity, and worth. As healthcare gaps widen and cultural messaging pushes anti-aging at all costs, many women are left wondering whether what they're experiencing is a breakdown or a breakthrough. In this episode, Kara Duffy sits down with Dr. Heidi Lescanec, Naturopathic Doctor and creator of the Pink Zones, to explore why menopause is not a crisis, but a recalibration - biologically, emotionally, and culturally. Heidi shares insights from her 20+ years in women's hormone health and her global research into communities where women thrive as they age with vitality and reverence. Together, they unpack the nervous system's role in longevity, the rewiring of the female brain during perimenopause, the research gaps in women's healthcare, and why middle-aged women are emerging as a powerful cultural and political force. This conversation examines what it means to move beyond symptom management, reclaim creative vitality, and redesign systems that honor women at every stage of life, not just their youth. The Powerful Ladies podcast, hosted by business coach and strategist Kara Duffy features candid conversations with entrepreneurs, creatives, athletes, chefs, writers, scientists, and more. Every Wednesday, new episodes explore what it means to lead with purpose, create with intention, and define success on your own terms. Whether you're growing a business, changing careers, or asking bigger questions, these stories remind you: you're not alone, and you're more powerful than you think. Send us a textHoly shit, we've been waiting for 5 years to have this conversation! We first heard about The 40-Year-Old Version at Sundance 2020, and we knew that we would one day interview the writer/director/star Radha Blank. And it was worth the wait! The 40-Year Old Version follows a down-on-her-luck NY playwright who reinvents herself as a rapper in an attempt to breakthrough and find her true voice. Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles was having a special screening of the film to celebrate its legacy and ongoing resonance. Radha joins us virtually from the event to share how she refuses to let age be a factor in her career, the struggle as an independent artist to maintain your integrity, her decision to shoot in black and white, and which famous director's career she'd like to emulate.Watch The 40-Year-Old Version on NetflixFollow director/writer/actor Radha Blank on IGFollow Vidiots Foundation on IG Support the showThanks for listening and for your support! This season is dedicated to helping you pick your summer reads and my guest today is the novelist Charlotte Mendelson whose writing has been compared to “late Shakespeare meets Modern family!” So you know where to turn if you're looking for a painfully funny, on the nose look at the dynamics of love and marriage. Charlotte worked as a publisher for twenty years before becoming an award winning novelist. She's written seven bestselling novels, the most recent of which are The Exhibitionist and Wife, both out now in paperback, which are kind of a pair in that they both deal with the reality of being married to monsters! She has also been gardening correspondent for the New Yorker and now writes for The Observer. I met Charlotte at her home in North London to snoop around her houseplants and her bookshelves while we discussed how to go grey without looking like you're looking after chickens in the wood, the puberty midlife confluence, the disproportionate stress of deciding what to wear, the lifelong impact of growing up nerd, being a pre internet lesbian, internalised homophobia, finding love as a grown up, perimenopausal horniness and so so so much more. It's chaos but delightful chaos! * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Shred Sisters by Betsy Lerner as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. ‘Seasoned feminist hag' Victoria Smith is sick to the back teeth of women being told to ‘just be kind'. This was catnip to our Mickey, who you'll already have heard wanging on about Victoria's 2023 book, Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women, which asks why middle-aged women are treated with such active disdain and traces the hatred and fear of them back through history. To be clear, Victoria's latest book, Unkind: How ‘Be Kind' Entrenches Sexism, has no beef with actual kindness – in fact, she's a big fan – but instead looks at how three little words – “just be kind” – can cost women way too much. And how a baked potato brought perspective. Both of Victoria's books are available now, and you'll find her on X and Bluesky @glosswitch. Learn more about your ad choices. Isabel Berwick speaks to Lucy Standing, founder of Brave Starts, a not-for-profit that helps older workers realise their potential. Isabel and Lucy are joined by writer and comedian Viv Groskop, who coaches and consults widely in the corporate world. Together, they discuss how women can ask the right questions about company culture, the factors you can't fight at work, and why the last thing older workers want is another training course.Want more? Playwright and performer Sandra Tsing Loh returns to the podcast (after four years!) to discuss her surprise hit play Madwomen of the West, which featured a superstar cast including Caroline Aaron, Marilu Henner, Melanie Mayron, and JoBeth Williams. After the Los Angeles theater establishment deemed the show too woman-centric, Sandra mounted an independent production, which she eventually took to New York and London. She now has a new one-woman show — a 70-minute "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again”-style rant — about the “journey” of that production called I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It. I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It will be performed for just two nights at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles. November 16 and November 23. Info and tickets here. GUEST BIO Sandra Tsing Loh is the author of several books, including "The Madwoman in the Volvo: My Year of Raging Hormones," which was selected as one of the New York Times' 100 Most Notable Books. Her previous book, "Mother on Fire," was inspired by her hit solo show about Los Angeles public education. Her off-Broadway solo shows include "Aliens in America" and "Bad Sex With Bud Kemp." Her comic memoirs include The New York Times New and Noteworthy "Madwoman and the Roomba"; The New York Times 100 Notable Books "Madwoman in the Volvo"; "Mother on Fire"; "A Year in Van Nuys"; and "Depth Takes a Holiday." The Los Angeles Times named her 1998 novel "If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home By Now" a 100 Best Fiction Book. An Atlantic contributing editor, Loh has been heard on NPR's Morning Edition, PRI's Marketplace and This American Life. In this episode of Not Over, Just Different, I'm diving into something deeply personal: how we store emotional energy in our bodies and the importance of letting ourselves feel it. I'll share insights from experts like Dr. Joan Rosenberg, who reveals that it's often the physical sensations—tight chests, clenched jaws—that keep us from truly experiencing our emotions. By learning to sit with these sensations for just 90 seconds, we can actually release years of emotional baggage. I also want to introduce you to a powerful tool that's helping me on this journey, the FeelWise app. This incredible app analyzes the frequency in your voice to identify emotional energy you may not even know you're holding. With daily check-ins, I've uncovered hidden emotions like sadness or cravings and found healthier ways to process them without ignoring or numbing them. This is Part Two of a three-part discussion. Why are middle-aged women these days subject to so much rage and hatred – frequently from people who see themselves as kind and ‘on the right side of history'? What explains the popularity of the Karen meme, which references a stereotypically privileged white woman whom everyone feels entitled to loathe? Why does this age-old misogyny feel so very now? As writer Victoria Smith approached middle age she made her peace with her sagging neckline and having to cope with ageing parents. But the disdain and vitriol she experienced as a woman in mid-life came as a shock. In her acclaimed book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women she traces the prejudice that has been directed towards older women down the ages and explores the prevalence of witch hunts in recent years. Smith joined us on stage at The Tabernacle in London in March 2024, where she was joined by fellow writers Hadley Freeman and Sonia Sodha. Together they explored why women who have the temerity to exist beyond the age at which they are conventionally deemed desirable to men are seen as superfluous to society; and they looked for solutions which can benefit all women – whether they are hags or hags-in-waiting. Frustrated by the lack of decent roles for middle-aged women, actor Robyn Malcolm and veteran screenwriter Dianne Taylor decided to do something about it. The pair put their heads together to create After the Party a six-part drama series set in Wellington which premieres on TVNZ at the end of the month. Its main character, played by Malcolm, is a woman in her 50s whose world implodes when she accuses her husband of a sex crime and nobody believes her. After the Party will premiere on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ+, October 29 at 8.30pm.

Back in season 4, I spoke to Annie Macmanus just as she was about to make the big leap from mega-DJ to... something entirely new. It's fascinating to see how much of what we talked about has since come to pass.My guest this week is a business woman, broadcaster, curator, tastemaker and DJ. She headlines festivals, hosts one of BBC Radio 1's flagship shows, was Europe's biggest female DJ and has her own hit podcast Changes with Annie Macmanus. And now, as if that wasn't e-bloody-nough (bc let's not forget the two kids), Annie has written her first novel, Mother Mother. Oh and she's cool. And nice. (In the best possible way. Not in the I'm too lazy to think of a proper adjective kind of way.)Over the next 45 minutes, Annie talks about the unexpected impact of turning 40, growing up with her fans and why middle aged women are a force to be reckoned with. Although this was recorded before she resigned from her job hosting Radio 1's flagship show, she's candid about saying goodbye to DJing and how it feels to start again professionally, why she's a control-fan and how she learnt to be comfortable in her own skin. Plus she gives me a lesson in radical no-ness!You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and Mother Mother by Annie Macmanus. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. Why are middle-aged women these days subject to so much rage and hatred? In her new book, "Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women," author Victoria Smith confronts the disdain and vitriol she encountered as a woman entering mid-life. and she dissects the ageism and misogyny that have historically plagued older women, shedding light on its resurgence in recent years. In conversation with Hadley Freeman from The Sunday Times, they examine the societal dismissal of women who dare to exist beyond the confines of youth and desirability, rendering them seemingly superfluous. We'd love to hear your feedback and what you think we should talk about next, who we should have on and what our future debates should be. What's the mid-life Gen X woman to do: accept the invisibility inherent in getting older, or speak up and risk being labelled an entitled Karen? Neither are great choices says British writer Victoria Smith, who says women are pitted against each other when they should be banding together.
Feminist author Victoria Smith discusses her first book, ‘Hags', about the demonisation of middle-aged women with FiLiA Spokeswoman Raquel Rosario Sánchez. Smith discusses the experiences which raised her awareness to the way middle-aged women are invisibilised and dismissed under patriarchy around the world, as well her understanding of the tropes designed to further vilify this cohort of women. A thoughtful thinker and compassionate writer, this book represents an enraging call to action for everyone, to revindicate our past and create a better future for all women, throughout middle-age and beyond.Victoria Smith is a writer and creator of the Glosswitch newsletter. She has been a regular contributor to the New Statesman and the Independent, focussing on women's issues, parenting and mental health. She has also written for Mumsnet, featured on panels at their Blogfest, and has made appearances on Woman's Hour to discuss female body image. Her newsletter The OK Karen, focused on midlife women's experiences of feminism, was launched in 2020, and she is particularly interested in how experiences of power and misogyny change as we age.Originally from Cumbria, she now lives in Cheltenham with her family. She is working towards achieving full venerable crone status before she hits fifty. You can follow Victoria Smith's commentary on Twitter and read her regular insights on women's rights at The Critic. You can purchase Hags from most bookstores, and you can easily find it at our FiLiA Feminist Library.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.louiseperry.co.ukMy guest today is Victoria Smith, journalist and author of a new book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women. We spoke about botox, intergenerational conflict, and why Mumsnet is such a dangerous political force. In the extended version, we also spoke about how ageing affects men's status and why so many young women are onboard with trans activism.
My guest on this week's Book Club podcast is the writer Victoria Smith, whose new book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women explains why one of the oldest forms of misogyny is seeing a vicious resurgence in our own age. She says some of the worst of it now comes from young women. She tells me why she thinks feminists of each new generation seem destined to forget or reject the lessons learned by the previous one, and why female bodies – and the life experiences which go with them – are something that can't be wished away by postmodern theory.

Victoria Smith is a regular contributor to The Critic, writing on women's issues, parenting, and mental health. Her work has also appeared in The New Statesman, The Independent, and UnHerd. Her book Hags looks at the demonisation of middle-aged women in politics and popular culture. In this episode, Stella and Sasha chat with Victoria about the depths of body hatred and body loathing. Victoria shares her perceptions about experiences described in the context of gender dysphoria, seeming incredibly relatable to her experience of anorexia and disordered eating when she was younger. The conversation exposes the distress of the burden of acclimating to the maturing female form at a young age manifesting as dysphoric perceptions of reality — a coping mechanism for discomfort.Another fascinating concept explored in the conversation is how with age, females continue to experience confusion and discomfort with their changing bodies and find themselves in a constant state of reconciling not just their own experiences in relation to their bodies, but society's reactions to the changes in both their physical presentation as well as their attitudes, expressions, and contributions to society.Victoria speaks charmingly about the sentiments behind her recently published book, Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women; and how society has always fostered a certain lack of respect for the wisdom and discernment women of a certain age contribute to culture and the symbolism behind it. There's a sort of generational war between young women and older women that has always seemingly existed and yet the journey of experiencing womanhood has a way of bridging the gap between the two.Links:Follow Victoria Smith on Twitter — @glosswitchBook by Victoria Smith: Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women -- https://geni.us/HagsBook by Jane Shilling: The Stranger in the Mirror: A Memoir of Middle Age -- https://www.amazon.com/Stranger-Mirror-Memoir-Middle-Shilling/dp/0701181001Book by Rachel Hewitt: In Her Nature: How Women Break Boundaries in the Great Outdoors -- https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/439400/in-her-nature-by-hewitt-rachel/9781784742898If you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:Episode 2 — Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/rapid-onset-gender-dysphoriaEpisode 4 — Why Do People Seek A New Identity? -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/why-do-people-seek-a-new-identityEpisode 12 — Identity vs. Role Confusion in Adolescence -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/12-identity-vs-role-confusion-in-adolescencePlease visit http://www.widerlenspod.com to explore more content, access additional resources, or join our listener community. To learn more about our sponsors, visit:

Luke could have begun his gospel narrative with the healing of a very important Roman centurion or of a rich young ruler. But instead of choosing the most respected people in society, Luke described Jesus as moving to the margins, particularly when it came to the intersectional realities of age and gender. On today's episode, Ashley walks us through the healing of Peter's mother-in-law in Luke 4:38-41. We learn more from Amy Cantor, an associate professor at OHSU and the lead researcher on the study, on how women can benefit from these discussions.
