Hello and welcome back to Fashion Founders The Podcast. My name is Victoria Smith, and this week I'm joined with Ariel LaFond. She is an CPA, a fractional CFO for small businesses, and the writer of Dumb Rich on Substack. She is the coolest accountant I think I will ever talk to or meet, she offers a concierge financial service especially those who are self-employed influencers, founders. Ariel here has really tangible tips and starts from the foundations that you need on being smart and knowledgeable about your money. We also talk about we a money mindset, abundance, and manifesting money. If you are self employed this is full of answers to some most frequently asked questions on business expenses, retirement funds, taxes, budgeting, credit cards - we cover so many topics. I loved talking to her because she had such an approachable, judgment-free way of answering all these questions. And she has so much knowledge, but really speaks the average person's language because sometimes financial stuff can get way over complicated and then people get really intimidated by it. I'm gonna let Ariel take it from here. So let's get into the episode!*Disclaimer: This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial, tax, or legal advice. Hello and welcome back to Fashion and Founders The Podcast. My name is Victoria Smith and this week I'm joined with Erica Veurink, she writes Long Live on Substack and is the founder of We Met at EV Salon. Erika was one of the perfect people to kick off this season and theme because she writes a lot on her Substack Long Live about making money from a portfolio career and how she went from making $1,500 a year freelance writing to doing her first six figure quarter. She literally shares her playbook of how you can do this too and other great advice. This is the first episode of season four of Fashion Founders and I think it is so fitting because the theme I tried to craft for this season is hearing from people who have a career in fashion working for themselves, making a lot of money, and who are also pretty open to talking about money and teaching people some of their tips and tricks. I'm very excited for this season and also worked with a New York stylist, Zoe Gofman to put together outfits like this Aligne look. ‘Seasoned feminist hag' Victoria Smith is sick to the back teeth of women being told to ‘just be kind'. This was catnip to our Mickey, who you'll already have heard wanging on about Victoria's 2023 book, Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women, which asks why middle-aged women are treated with such active disdain and traces the hatred and fear of them back through history. To be clear, Victoria's latest book, Unkind: How ‘Be Kind' Entrenches Sexism, has no beef with actual kindness – in fact, she's a big fan – but instead looks at how three little words – “just be kind” – can cost women way too much. And how a baked potato brought perspective. Both of Victoria's books are available now, and you'll find her on X and Bluesky @glosswitch. Learn more about your ad choices. We review Victoria Smith's new book '(Un)kind: How 'Be Kind' Entrenches Sexism'. We discuss the overarching expectation on women to “be kind” and its implications, such as making space for men in women's spaces, disagreeing with men a cardinal sin, and women as virtuous only if endlessly forgiving. Other themes of the book discussed are the concept of "himpathy”, women's kindness as transformative for men, women's kindness when tied to sexual access, and how the "be kind" mantra helps to secures male dominance in social interactions with women. Plus, examples of famous men being absolutely unkind and never being policed for it, men as ‘sexual communists' when it comes to wanting an equality of sexual access according to sex as a supposed need, JD Vance's excellently unkind grandmother, men's rage when women say “no", and how adherence to ‘be kind' explains why more women than men supports trans rights, despite transgenderism not being in women's interests and very much in men's interests.
From the early 1970s feminist activists from across the globe campaigned under a single demand – Wages for Housework. The historian Emily Callaci traces the lives and ideas of its key creators in her new book, Wages for Housework: The Story of a Movement, an Idea, a Promise. The campaign highlighted the need to change the way work, and especially what has been traditionally deemed women's work, is valued. Although men are still paid more than women, and women still play a greater role in the home, recent polling reveals that nearly half of Britons say women's equality has gone far enough. And that figure has been rising significantly in the last decade. Rosie Campbell, Professor of Politics at King's College London also points out that a growing number of young men believe it will be harder to be a man than a woman in 20 years' time.So is it time for women to stop campaigning and #JustBeKind? Definitely not, according to the writer Victoria Smith. In her new book, UnKind, she unpicks the kindness trend that emerged in the 2020s, and argues that women and girls have again been coerced into a passive role.Producer: Katy Hickman

So you just click on the product in your closet that you decide to sell and they cross list it to their partners like Depop, eBay, Poshmark, etc. They are solving a problem I think so many people have faced when trying to sell their clothes. Also right now, while you're looking at your wardrobe on Future Reference, you can go check out your wardrobe wrapped. So basically Spotify wrapped, but for the items in your closet. They have so many data points on your wardrobe from resale value, amount spent per item, color palette, and so much more.I am loving using future reference. As HR professionals, ensuring an inclusive and supportive workplace is a fundamental responsibility. A recent Irish survey conducted by Red C on behalf of Bank of Ireland revealed that almost 1 in 10 adults in Ireland identify as neurodivergent, yet only half of neurodivergent employees have disclosed their condition to their employer. Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in how the human brain works and processes information, leading to diverse behavioural traits and interactions in the workplace. Despite this, many organisations overlook the importance of raising awareness about neurodiversity and fostering neuroinclusion. In this webinar, Declan MacQuillan, Senior Associate from Arthur Cox joins Victoria Smith from Legal Island to discuss the significance of neurodiversity in the workplace. Declan outlines the practicalities and provides his legal insights to help you:Understand your legal responsibilities under the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015 and how to avoid discrimination claims.Review case law examples of how some organisations mishandled their neurodivergent staff, and what we can learn from these mistakes.Outline best practices in supporting and empowering your neurodivergent employees.Victoria also discusses with Emma what HR can and should be doing to promote neuroinclusion.

Victoria Smith v. Health Service Care Corporation
This is Part Two of a three-part discussion. Why are middle-aged women these days subject to so much rage and hatred – frequently from people who see themselves as kind and ‘on the right side of history'? What explains the popularity of the Karen meme, which references a stereotypically privileged white woman whom everyone feels entitled to loathe? Why does this age-old misogyny feel so very now? As writer Victoria Smith approached middle age she made her peace with her sagging neckline and having to cope with ageing parents. But the disdain and vitriol she experienced as a woman in mid-life came as a shock. In her acclaimed book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women she traces the prejudice that has been directed towards older women down the ages and explores the prevalence of witch hunts in recent years. Smith joined us on stage at The Tabernacle in London in March 2024, where she was joined by fellow writers Hadley Freeman and Sonia Sodha. Together they explored why women who have the temerity to exist beyond the age at which they are conventionally deemed desirable to men are seen as superfluous to society; and they looked for solutions which can benefit all women – whether they are hags or hags-in-waiting. I believe in their legacy." – Victoria Smith "Thinking of everybody else in your family who you're there for and the legacy can sometimes be overwhelming as well, and so, you tend not to put yourself first." – Victoria Smith "Being able to see yourself experience different cultures within your cultures, certain things you don't have to worry about because there's already a level of understanding that exists and the sense of community is there." – Victoria Smith "I remember going from being this enthusiastic student to being super down and isolating myself. And I didn't know I was depressed because I didn't have a name for it." – Abraham Sculley "There's the stigma of religion being the way that you do fix anything wrong." – Victoria Smith "When you have a lack of resources, you almost have to figure out how can I get creative with what I do have?" – Abraham Sculley "The dedication and the legacy precede us, so that makes outreach a little bit more seamless than if we didn't have that." – Victoria Smith "With the lack of trust in the medical field, seeing somebody like you in the room that you were talking to brings a sense of ease." – Victoria Smith "Being able to speak on the story on platforms like this and bringing people into knowing the impact that their partnership will have on the greater community as a whole." – Victoria Smith "I'm trying to remain optimistic that we at least move the needle in a positive direction. Eradication is the ultimate goal, and that would be a dream." – Victoria Smith "Mental health is promoting the journey of finding your true self and learning the tools to stand firmly in learning who you truly are." – Victoria Smith "When we are in that abundance, we have an opportunity to recognize those who need that support and support our students." – Abraham Sculley "You don't even have to be in crisis to reach out." – Abraham Sculley "It's best to have the resource and not need it than to need it and not have it." – Abraham Sculley Connect with Victoria via the following: · Website: https://www.unapologetically-free.org/ · Email: victoria.smith@uncf.org . Why are middle-aged women these days subject to so much rage and hatred? In her new book, "Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women," author Victoria Smith confronts the disdain and vitriol she encountered as a woman entering mid-life. and she dissects the ageism and misogyny that have historically plagued older women, shedding light on its resurgence in recent years. In conversation with Hadley Freeman from The Sunday Times, they examine the societal dismissal of women who dare to exist beyond the confines of youth and desirability, rendering them seemingly superfluous. What's the mid-life Gen X woman to do: accept the invisibility inherent in getting older, or speak up and risk being labelled an entitled Karen? Neither are great choices says British writer Victoria Smith, who says women are pitted against each other when they should be banding together.

Feminist author Victoria Smith discusses her first book, ‘Hags', about the demonisation of middle-aged women with FiLiA Spokeswoman Raquel Rosario Sánchez. Smith discusses the experiences which raised her awareness to the way middle-aged women are invisibilised and dismissed under patriarchy around the world, as well her understanding of the tropes designed to further vilify this cohort of women. A thoughtful thinker and compassionate writer, this book represents an enraging call to action for everyone, to revindicate our past and create a better future for all women, throughout middle-age and beyond.Victoria Smith is a writer and creator of the Glosswitch newsletter. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.louiseperry.co.ukMy guest today is Victoria Smith, journalist and author of a new book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women. We spoke about botox, intergenerational conflict, and why Mumsnet is such a dangerous political force. In the extended version, we also spoke about how ageing affects men's status and why so many young women are onboard with trans activism.
My guest on this week's Book Club podcast is the writer Victoria Smith, whose new book Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women explains why one of the oldest forms of misogyny is seeing a vicious resurgence in our own age. She says some of the worst of it now comes from young women. She tells me why she thinks feminists of each new generation seem destined to forget or reject the lessons learned by the previous one, and why female bodies – and the life experiences which go with them – are something that can't be wished away by postmodern theory.

Victoria Smith is a regular contributor to The Critic, writing on women's issues, parenting, and mental health. Her work has also appeared in The New Statesman, The Independent, and UnHerd. Her book Hags looks at the demonisation of middle-aged women in politics and popular culture. In this episode, Stella and Sasha chat with Victoria about the depths of body hatred and body loathing. Victoria shares her perceptions about experiences described in the context of gender dysphoria, seeming incredibly relatable to her experience of anorexia and disordered eating when she was younger. The conversation exposes the distress of the burden of acclimating to the maturing female form at a young age manifesting as dysphoric perceptions of reality — a coping mechanism for discomfort.Another fascinating concept explored in the conversation is how with age, females continue to experience confusion and discomfort with their changing bodies and find themselves in a constant state of reconciling not just their own experiences in relation to their bodies, but society's reactions to the changes in both their physical presentation as well as their attitudes, expressions, and contributions to society.Victoria speaks charmingly about the sentiments behind her recently published book, Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women; and how society has always fostered a certain lack of respect for the wisdom and discernment women of a certain age contribute to culture and the symbolism behind it. There's a sort of generational war between young women and older women that has always seemingly existed and yet the journey of experiencing womanhood has a way of bridging the gap between the two.Links:Follow Victoria Smith on Twitter — @glosswitchBook by Victoria Smith: Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women -- https://geni.us/HagsBook by Jane Shilling: The Stranger in the Mirror: A Memoir of Middle Age -- https://www.amazon.com/Stranger-Mirror-Memoir-Middle-Shilling/dp/0701181001Book by Rachel Hewitt: In Her Nature: How Women Break Boundaries in the Great Outdoors -- https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/439400/in-her-nature-by-hewitt-rachel/9781784742898If you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:Episode 2 — Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/rapid-onset-gender-dysphoriaEpisode 4 — Why Do People Seek A New Identity? -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/why-do-people-seek-a-new-identityEpisode 12 — Identity vs. Role Confusion in Adolescence -- https://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/12-identity-vs-role-confusion-in-adolescencePlease visit http://www.widerlenspod.com to explore more content, access additional resources, or join our listener community. To learn more about our sponsors, visit:
What's stopping us telling the stories of women's inner lives, or listening to them, especially once they become mothers, or are over forty? Actresses discover there are far fewer roles once they're no longer seen as young; whilst middle-aged and older women's lives are conflated, as if they are having exactly the same experiences. Ian McMillan is joined by Victoria Smith, author of 'Hags: the demonisation of middle-aged women' , by poet Patrick McGuinness (sharing poems from his forthcoming collection 'Blood Feather') by Jenny Lewis, author of 'Gilgamesh Retold' (her retellings of Mesopotamian myth reveal a female inn-keeper at the edge of the world) , and by folk legends Marry Waterson and Lisa Knapp (performing as 'Hack Poets Guild ) who share haunting songs of silenced and traduced women. We also hear our latest BBC Centenary commission - this week it's 'Deep Listening' by Emily Berry.
