It has been a little bit, but I am excited to be back on the mic and have several interviews scheduled coming up over the next. few weeks, so it should be back to a more regular schedule going here into fall. I promise if I'm ever going to peace out for an extended amount of time again, I will definitely let you know. So don't worry if occasionally there's a week skipped or something like that. I used to put this out religiously every single week on Wednesday and it was a lot easier when I had some interns helping me produce the podcast. But now it's just little me again, all by myself. So and a few things have been going on in not only my life, but in the business. And so that has made things not as regular. But anyway, I have no intention of going away at least not right now. So I will let you know if that ever happens. But anyway, for today's solo episode, I have something to update you on that I've wanting to share for a while. And I've mentioned this before in the past. And that is my Dexa body scan. that I was keeping track of since I started lifting again. And so I've talked about this a little bit in the past, but I might as well share the history again with you before I get into what I've been doing over the last year to increase my strength. and how that's been going and what I've been doing and some lessons that you may want to take away from that process. But anyway, how it all started is that I've been active pretty much my whole life, was a runner for 17 years, played sports in both high school and college. so my first experience with weightlifting was way back in the eighth grade basketball, which at my age is kind of shocking that it Cheryl McColgan (01:58.306)even in my mind to lift some weights to have better sports performance because it definitely, especially in high schools then, you maybe the boys were in the weight room, but it was definitely not a thing for the girls teams. And I think the only reason that I had it in my head was just because I've always had such this personal interest in health and wellness and because I had watched my dad my whole life. He was a runner and he had always lifted weights. He's basically like Jack LaLanne. If you don't know that name at the younger people listening here, go Google Jack LaLanne, but he's very inspirational, was very ahead of his time in terms of being into health and wellness and lifting weights and being very fit.

On today's episode of The Active Life Podcast my friend, Dr. Amy West is back, and we are talking about the injury risks associated with CrossFit, how overblown they are, and how under reported. We also talk about a bunch of other things related to musculoskeletal health, and what society needs to change if we're going to become vibrant again. I believe that if CrossFit went back to its roots and wore the badge of "forging elite fitness", acknowledging stuff happens when you're trying to be elite, they would enjoy massive success, again. I believe CrossFit is the most disruptive, and efficacious methodological breakthrough in fitness since Jack Lalanne hit the screens in the 1950s, and like anything else, it's flawed. It's more dangerous to be sedentary than to do CrossFit, and to suggest doing CrossFit is dangerous is also incorrect. Enjoy the show. @amywestmd

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She hosts Natalia Mehlman-Petrzela, professor of history at The New School, to discuss her recent book Fit Nation: The Gains And Pains Of America's Exercise Obsession. Then she is joined by Daniel Finn, features editor at Jacobin, to discuss his recent piece "Britain's Power Elite Has Defeated Its Challengers by Creating a Political Wasteland". Emma first runs through updates on another Fed interest rate increase, a Federal appeals judge ruling against Trump, Biden shutting down the White House's COVID response team, the Senate voting to keep the AUMF, the Chicago Teachers' union backing Brandon Johnson, and various updates on far-right challenges to democracy and Queer life, before parsing through Bernie Sanders' confrontation with Moderna over their planned vaccine price gauge. Natalia Mehlman-Petrzela then joins as she and Emma dive right into the history of America's fitness obsession and the complicated push and pull between progress with self-expression and corporations capitalizing on developing misogynist and capitalist expectations. First, Mehlman-Petrzela looks to the legacy of Jack LaLanne, the first Fifties fitness guru, and how his programs served to start a shift from seeing fitness as an ego-driven hobby to a fundamental aspect of self-improvement and health with broad consensus. After parsing through LaLanne's particular marketing to suburban housewives, Natalia and Emma tackle the development of the fitness industry not around communal ideas of public health, but hyper-individualized concepts of self-improvement that nestled somewhere between labor and leisure, and how this saw success across the political spectrum, before wrapping up the interview with the impact of the 2008 financial crisis, fitness' full transformation into a consumptive industry, and the hyper-atomization that we've seen since develop over the last few years. Daniel Finn and Emma then parse through his recent piece responding to the Economist's dubbing of a new era of British politics as a new “Great Moderation,” which attempts to paint the active expulsion of the left wing from politics as a return to a politics of managerial competence after a period of populist demagoguery. Parsing through this, Finn tackles the very-much-still-relevant presence of the populist far-right in British politics and why that is seen as valuable to the center-right establishment, before he and Emma step back to assess how the British establishment was able to expunge the left wing of the labor party from mainstream politics. They first look to the material foundation of the 2008 financial crisis that was met with a decade of British austerity which completely crippled the working class, also exploring the two challenges it faced: one in the form of Scottish independence led by Nicola Sturgeon and the other in the emergence of a Labour movement led by Jeremy Corbyn. Wrapping up the interview, Finn walks Emma through the process through which the British establishment, bolstered by the mainstream press, was able to fearmonger over wedge-issue culture wars, taking a single element of a popular platform (trans rights for Sturgeon and pro-Palestine support for Corbyn) and painting it as a broad strokes undemocratic attack on a minority group. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Brian from Flagstaff about gun buyback's potential in the US, also watching Russell Brand rep the Rumble brand, and the recent TikTok congressional hearing. One of the most amazing men to ever roam the planet was Jack LaLanne. He's considered the “Godfather of Fitness'' and he has some of the craziest, most extraordinary physical feats you will ever hear in your life. From setting a world-record of 1,000 pushups & 1,000 pullups in 1-hour and 22 minutes at the age of 45 to at age 70, towing 70 boats with 70 people for 1.5 miles in the water, while swimming handcuffed and shackled. Yes, read that again. Needless to say, Jack LaLanne was one of the most inspirational men I ever got the chance to meet. He also had a TV show that lasted over 34-years. He had his own string of gyms. And supplement lines. And even his own “Jack LaLanne Juicer.”   Well, I recently had the honor to visit his lovely 96-year old bride, Elaine LaLanne, and spend 1.5 days at the LaLanne compound in central California. It was extraordinary. I worked out in his home gym, saw all the iconic awards and original prototypes, and…I got to interview Elaine LaLanne for this week's Todd Durkin IMPACT SHOW podcast on the legend of her late husband Jack LaLanne.
