The NHL standings are tight and heading into March the games always get more intense! The Leafs went 7-4-1 in February and while the top line of Matthews-Marner-Bunting is one of the best right now in the NHL, the goaltending has been less than ordinary. These are a few topics we discuss in our segment the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.Despite some of the ugliness, we actually found a bright spot! We also had flashbacks to a Leaf great, who used to take the puck end to end! Who was that Leaf great? Tune in to find out and to hear who made our LTL Highlight Reel!Another exciting moment that all of Canada celebrated was the Gold medal win for the Canadian Olympic Women's hockey team! The Gold medal game was the most watched event of the Beijing games in Canada. We talk about the big victory over the United States and what many people are saying was the best Team Canada ever to represent the women's game.We conclude the show by celebrating Black History Month, which is highlighted every year during the month of February. It is so important to bring awareness to, and improve on, growing the grassroots of the game throughout the year. Former Leafs defenceman Mark Fraser works with MLSE in Player Development – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and we discuss his involvement with the team and also talk about a personal Scarborough hockey connection that we didn't know about! The funnest part of the season is just around the corner! The trade deadline is a couple weeks away and we are one month closer to the playoffs. Our show is also approaching a significant milestone as we are closing in on our 50th episode! So much to be excited about and we are so grateful to be sharing it with all of you! January felt like an odd month for the Maple Leafs and their fan base. No fans at Scotiabank Arena, only 1 Saturday night game at home, and like most NHL teams, the Leafs had to deal with Covid. We got through it and it's going to be busier, and hopefully a lot more exciting in February! It's also the halfway point of the season for us, and the Leafs! We are in our first full, 82-game season covering the Leafs and we are loving it! In this episode we start off the show with our segment “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” and we talk about the goaltending and where we think Petr Mrazek fits in with the team. We discuss the return of the real Mitch Marner and we have some advice for Islander fans! Tune in to find out what that is.And we have a couple of firsts for the LTL Highlight Reel ! Two highlight reel moments from the same game, and a tie for our top Highlight from the past couple of weeks!Lastly, in “The 3 rd Period”, we talk Olympic hockey--specifically the women's game! Team Canada's first game is February 3rd and we give our thoughts on the players to watch! Of course, the Olympics are more than hockey and we talk about some of the other events that we love to watch!Enjoy the All Stars Leafs Nation! When you're done we'll see you on the other side and get you set for what's sure to be a hectic, and very exciting second half of the season. Dr. Wade Gilbert is an internationally renowned coaching consultant and sports scientist, as well as an award-winning professor in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU Fresno. Growing up, he lived in a small rural Canadian town and started riding his bikes around with his friends, creating jumps and ramps around town. He started playing multiple types of sports, which would eventually shape his life to come. He ended up going through college studying to be a P.E. teacher. Eventually, he started working at UCLA, then was offered a job at Fresno State, along with his with his wife. They both relocated and started working with the Fresno State Athletics Department. Since then, He's worked with the United States Olympic Committee, National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment, and more. He's worked with some of the most elite athletes and coaches in the world. Wade says that The Canadian Olympic Women's Softball team that he coached was the model of what a team should be, a working cohesive group of people. He uses them as an example of a team effort to accomplish one goal. He works with many different types of sports teams to show their weaknesses and strengths, as an advisor for coaches and athletes looking to improve their strategies. The crux of what Dr. Gilbert tells the teams he consults is this: You don't have to be the best athlete on the field, you just have to be present. And much like with recovery, it works the same way. You just need to be present, in the here and now and be receptive to advice and change. In 2017, he wrote the book “Coaching Better Every Season” where he shares his knowledge on communicating and teaching with athletes, coaches, students, and educators. Gilbert regularly shares his coaching insights through 'Coach Doc' commentaries on the Human Kinetics Coach Education website in his advisory role with the company. He also works closely with youth and Fresno State coaches locally, often testing the merits of new coaching methods and practices. Dan is one of the founders of GRIT Athletics in Toronto, and he has spent over a decade working as the strength and conditioning coach for The Hill Academy. In his time in the strength and conditioning industry he has had the opportunity to work with athletes of all levels, including members of the Canadian Olympic Women's hockey team, as well as multiple NHL players. .Dan's introduction into the industry was absolutely not a typical one. After finishing his athletic career and becoming a teacher, he spent time volunteering in the strength and conditioning department at his school purely based off of enjoyment. Over time he took over the role and began developing his own business in the summer time while working at Hill Academy through the school year. Having no typical, formal training in the industry, experience became his "University." .I love this background in the industry as I truly believe it is experience like this that allows coaches to understand what is TRULY important in our industry. Relationship building and communication with the athletes you work with is absolutely crucial to your development as a coach as well as the development of the athletes you work with. Dan also discusses how as he built his business to extremely successful levels he was never focused on marketing himself or branding of any kind. He simply spent his time focusing on doing good work. The results from that work spoke for themselves and his athlete numbers continued to grow up until the time he was able to leave Hill Academy and start GRIT Athletics. It’s day 47 of our epic cross-country road trip and the boys are stoked to be in the second largest French-speaking city in the world to learn how to play Canada’s favourite sport: hockey. After getting suited up in brand new gear with the help of Montreal’s Sports Experts, Brent, Mike, Ryan and Chris head to the Aréna Ville Mont-Royal to meet up with Canadian Olympic Women’s Hockey Team coach, Danielle Savageau and three-time gold medal Olympic goalie, Kim St-Pierre. It’s a day of firsts for Chris, who has never played so much as a game of shinny in his life. The drills, which focus on mobility, agility, passing and shooting, are tough to say the least. And Danielle Sauvageau, the woman who lead the first women’s ice hockey team to take home the gold in nearly 50 years, expects nothing less than everything our boys have. Tensions run high and after a slight altercation, Ryan and Chris drop their gloves and Chris experiences his first on-ice fight, which of course, ends with a hug. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled this summer for our Project Adventure striped RV, as it journeys to 49 indescribably beautiful Canadian destinations. You’ll have to see it to believe it!
