This EP is a great conversation with two good friends of mine and national treasures of Canadian Sport. Dom Gauthier competed as a Mogul Skier in the late 90s and was an Olympian in Nagano Japan in 1998. He went on to become the coach of the Japanese National Team and then became the private coach of Jenn Heil and Alexandre Bilodeau where he was integral in their mutual success in Torino and Vancouver. He became a founding member of the B2Ten foundation, supporting many Canadian Olympians and the success of Canadian Olympic sports for almost 20 years. Jenn Heil is one of the winningest Mogul Skiers, both male and female, of all time. She has won multiple World Championships and many World Cup gold medal podiums throughout her career. She won Olympic Gold in 2006 at Torino, and Silver at the Vancouver Games. She's gone on to finish a bachelor's degree at McGill University and an MBA at Stanford University and is now building a business focused on women's health care.Together they are a power couple in Canadian sport, they have two growing boys, and they are dedicated to the improvement of sport and health in Canada. More recently Jenn has been named the Chef de Mission for the 2026 Olympic Games in Cortina, Italy. I was honored to sit down with them both and catch up on life since retiring from competitive sports. Is there anything better than a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio to recap Canada's win over the USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off while also previewing tomorrow's return for the Edmonton Oilers? I didn't think so. On this week's podcast, we discussed Connor McDavid's game-winner over the USA, how excited we are for the Olympics, previewed Saturday's Oilers game, and much more. We kicked off the Friday episode of Oilersnation Radio with a delicious debate about the Canadian Olympic team since we're only a year out from the next best-on-best tournament and what adjustments we would make to the lineup. Obviously, Team Canada put together an all-star team for the 4 Nations tournament, but does that mean there isn't room for improvement? As you'll hear, the boys had different ideas about which adjustments they'd make ahead of next year's tourney. Sticking with the 4 Nations Face-Off final, we discussed how the NHL couldn't have gotten a better two weeks of action despite this being a one-off tournament. After such an exciting two weeks of hockey, it's almost going to be a bit of a comedown to get back to the regularly scheduled NHL programming. Even though the regular season won't be nearly as feisty as what we got from the best-on-best tournament, all of us hope that some of the people who got into hockey because of the tournament will stick with it. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of betting talk ahead of tomorrow's contest between the Oilers and Flyers, some Ask the Idiots questions that were all over the board, and finally our Hot and Cold Performers of the week. As always, the final chunk of the podcast was all over the map with an array of topics and side quests. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Now that we're less than a year away from the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, we're continuing to get excited by speaking with some great winter athletes on this show! And what is even better is when we bring back a former guest for another chat, as we welcome back Canadian freestyle skier and Olympic medalist Lewis Irving to learn how his preparation is going for next year and just what we can expect from him at the 2026 Olympic Games! We learn from him how a serious crash not long after we spoke with him in 2023 has shaped his lead up to his third Olympics, and how his miraculous recovery from the crash has helped spurred him on in his performances since. We also find out about some significant Canadian Olympic history he could create next year and what it would mean to him to achieve that. Added to that we find out about the best place to eat at in Quebec, how his Italian is shaping up for next year as well as just where in the world he experienced some of the best poutine he has ever had. It's another incredible chat with Lewis that you simply can't miss! So get to listening to avoid disappointment!

Recent consulting clients include: Manchester City Football Club (EPL), England Football Association (International Football), Australian Institute of Sport (Olympic/Paralympic Sport), Melbourne Football Club (AFL), Kerry GAA (Gaelic Football). Prior to this, Gareth has worked for 14+ years across individual and team sports within three Olympic and Paralympic systems (UK, New Zealand and Canada) and three professional sports leagues (English Football, Cricket and Rugby), supporting over 450 athletes that achieved 23 Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship medals, and one world record. He was also scientific lead for the Canadian Olympic marathon and race-walk athletes at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. He holds a PhD in sport physiology and running performance from the Sport Performance Research Institute at AUT University in New Zealand and a ‘mini' MBA from Simon Fraser University in science innovation and technology commercialisation. QUOTES “There are a number of things that we should be looking for. The first thing is the athlete profile. So that is where all your sub-disciplines come in, from a medical standpoint, what are we talking about? From a biomechanical, psychological standpoint, which type of personality are we dealing with? From a physiological standpoint, are we talking about a speed profile, hybrid or endurance profile?” “So a common question you hear often is should conditioning be more sport specific or should it be more targeting the physical capacities underpinning the sport? But the reality of the matter is that physiology exists, whichever sport you're playing.” “It is a very rare occasion in a team sport where you are short on the sport-specific exposure of chemistry” “Sprinting speed is scaffolding for team sports. We can't build it and then let it go, because if we let it go, then the percentage we're working at when running goes up” “The three metrics alongside team sport key training metrics I'm looking at are where's the sprinting speed? where's the MAS? where's the critical speed?” “Athletes need to be exposed to all the stimulus, from low intensity to sprinting speed, probably for 18 months, two years at the low end, for us to be confident, this is the type of profile an athlete is.” “The key metric for low and moderate intensity work is the effort, the internal effort, not the external speed and the answer is whatever speed elicits a five or six out of 10 feeling” SHOWNOTES 1) Gareth's exploration of the anaerobic speed reserve which has taken him from the UK to NZ to Canada 2) The framework for conditioning and importance of athlete profiling 3) The relevance of middle-distance track events and their training for field sports 4) Getting a clear characterization of what is happening in technical-tactical training sessions and unlearning “classical” physiology 5) Assessing the anaerobic speed reserve in athletes and the practical application of profiling 6) The interplay between critical speed and maximal aerobic speed or velocity VO2max and Gareth's preferences for measuring both 7) How to use the ASR ratio as a screen of “spread” and benchmarking sprint and endurance physiology 8) Principles versus models and the value of holding principles as loosely as possible until you understand exactly what type of athlete you are dealing with PEOPLE MENTIONED Peter Weyand Phil Bellinger Veronica Billat Phil Scott

Fresh off of leading Arizona State to its first NCAA team title in program history, Bob Bowman announced he would be leaving to head up the swim and dive program at Texas. A number of athletes left Arizona State following this announcement, either to follow Bob Bowman to Austin or pursue their swimming at other programs. One athlete who had trained under Bowman and was expected to follow him (from the outside) was freshman Ilya Kharun. The Canadian national had seen vast improvement under Bowman in just one year, capping his season with an NCAA title in the 200 fly. However, having built a life and community in Tempe already, Kharun opted to stay and train under newly named head coach and ASU alum Herbie Behm. It seemed to work for the rising sophomore, as he qualified for his first Canadian Olympic team and left Paris with 2 bronze medals in the 100 and 200 fly. In this podcast, Kharun discusses his decision to stay at ASU, what training with coach Behm has been like, and how he managed his event load in Paris and wound up on the podium twice.

Olympian, professional 400-meter runner for New Balance, and now author Micha Powell tells her running journey through a series of transformative racing stories. Micha's first book, Sprinting through Setbacks: An Olympian's Guide to Overcoming Self Doubt and Imposture Syndrome, came out in July 2023. It highlights big racing and life lessons Micha has taken from her competitive career. Each chapter focuses on one race and one major takeaway. At the end of the chapter, there's a journaling section with journaling prompts for the reader to use, making this also a terrific personal growth workbook. Among her many accomplishments in track, Micha Powell is an Olympian, having been named to the 2016 Canadian Olympic team for the 4x400-meter relay. She was also a member of the gold-medal-winning 4x400-meter team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Micha is the daughter of track superstars and Olympians. Her father is long jumper Mike Powell, who set the record in that event in 1991: that record still stands today. Micha's mother is three-time Olympian in the 400-meter hurdles and television personality Rosie Edah. Just recently, Micha switched coaches and now her mother is also her coach. Despite her early exposure to elite level track and field, Micha came to the sport late, at 17. She intentionally followed her heart, and discovered her passion for the 400 meter. Micha raced collegiately for the University of Maryland, and set records in the 400, on both the indoor and outdoor track: those records both still stand. Post-graduation, she turned pro, with a single-minded focus on the 400 meter. Mirroring the structure of her book, Micha's story on the podcast highlights some of her most poignant race experiences, and the lessons she learned. Lessons that you can take with you into your own running pursuits and life outside of running. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition, I speak with Canadian Olympic sprinter and new author Micha Powell. The daughter of two Olympians, Rosey Edeh and long jump World Record holder Mike Powell, athletics is part of Micha's DNA. She talks about what it was like growing up with two Olympian parents and the impact that had on her own journey is sports. After playing multiple sports growing up, Micha, like her parents, found success on the track and quickly progressed to making the 2016 Canadian Olympic team in the 4x400m relay. Unfortunately, she didn't get to run in the Olympics, and Micha shares how she struggled with that disappointment alongside pressure and self-doubt. Micha continued to face multiple setbacks and mental challenges including imposter syndrome and injuries. These struggles motivated her to write a memoir “ Sprinting Through Setbacks: An Olympian's Guide to Overcoming Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome” and accompanying workbook all while training to make the Olympics! We dive deep into her book, sharing how everyone can benefit from mindset tools and lessons she's learned along the way. I recommend you check out her book “Sprinting Through Setbacks” and workbook here; I think you'll find them very helpful! One of the biggest stories of the Paris Olympics has centred on the Canadian women's soccer team, as the reigning gold medal winners have been embroiled in an international spying scandal. Last week, French police arrested a Canada Soccer staffer for flying a drone above opponents' training sessions before the games began. FIFA have docked the team six points, while head coach Bev Priestman and two assistants have been suspended for a year. The Globe's Robyn Doolittle joins The Decibel from Paris to talk about the fallout of the scandal, how it affects government funding for Canada Soccer and the pall its cast over the Canadian Olympic story.Questions? The Paris games kicks off with the Opening Ceremonies today, but the Canadian women's soccer team has already given the thousands of media covering the event something to talk about. Earlier this week, a team analyst was caught using a drone to spy on the New Zealand team's practice, sparking immediate consequences that have included removal from the team, multiple investigations and even police charges. Why would anyone associated with the team try to do this, or think they'd get away with it? Is this a one-off incident or a systemic issue? How far up the Canadian soccer ladder does this scheme go? How bad will the fallout be? And has Canada tainted its games before they even begin?GUEST: Sid Seixeiro, sports commentator, co-host of Breakfast Television, formerly of Tim and Sid We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. Born and raised in Toronto but growing up in an Italian household, “futbol was life!” for Jordyn Listro. She began playing at age 5 and loved to run, be part of a team and create relationships with families who lived nearby. The experience was as much cultural as it was athletic. However, as things became more competitive, she needed to adjust her focus to prioritize both the physical aspects of success such as nutrition, sleep, extra training but also the willingness to seek out information and feedback to get better. She needed to become her own biggest fan and advocate. She attended the University of South Florida, where she was a 4-year starter, setting the USF record for career games played. She then made her professional debut in the Spanish Primera Division in 2017 before playing in the National Women's Soccer League. She has also been a member of the Canadian National Team. Despite all her efforts, she fell short of a major goal to make the Canadian Olympic team who ended up winning gold without her. Rather than give up, she used her competitive mindset to dig even deeper on the mental side of the game while also gibing attention to her life outside of soccer. Jordyn is looking forward to making an impact in the USL Super League for Tampa Bay Sun, still planning to compete for Team Canada on the biggest stage and helping grow women's professional soccer in her home country. @jordylistro
