Clark Lagemann is the CEO of Avidon Health, developing technologies for healthcare providers and payers in order to deliver personalized health improvement plans for employees.  Health coaches deploy digital tools to address the challenges of substance abuse and stress in order to find the root causes of problems and find paths to behavior change. Clark explains, "Well, the first thing is you need to create a culture in which your employees feel comfortable sharing and speaking about the challenges they're facing. Absenteeism, everyone knows when Billy's not at work, but presenteeism is much more difficult to identify. There are so many employees right now that are back at the office that aren't able to effectively deliver objectives and outcomes for the organization." "Everything connects into the overall person. If you look at some of the data, the chronic healthcare conditions that we see today, it's a problem. But if you look at the root cause, it's stress. It's bad sleep, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity. Those typical root causes are at the origin of all chronic healthcare costs and diseases. So we're talking about $3.8 trillion worth of annual healthcare costs that are contributed by these factors. Obviously, we need something different, unique and special to engage those employees to treat those types of conditions and those root causes." "Wellness coaching, I consider the tip of the spear in the healthcare spectrum. There is a shortage of primary care providers, and there is a lack of available appointments currently. People don't want to go into an office. There are all these different challenges. But, if the positive thought is something that isn't true for you, it's not going to be very useful in helping you move forward in your life, experience the change you need or process the emotions you're going through.  Worse yet, just thinking positive when you don't feel it can throw you into a shame spiral of judging yourself for not thinking the way you think you should be thinking!  Ugh! Her fire department was so impressed by her transformation that they put her in charge of the newly formed Wellness Fitness Initiative, a collaborative program between the International Association of Firefighters and International Association of Fire Chiefs. Cindy is a decorated Fire Captain and paramedic, awarded Firefighter of the Year and Oregon State Paramedic of the Year. As part of the prestigious Executive Fire Officer Program at the U.S. Fire Academy, Cindy published original research on firefighter and public safety. Understanding the importance of surrounding yourself with people who want you to succeed. Do yourself a favor and find a mentor. The brain is always thinking in gains and losses. Quit trying to convenience people that you are making a good choice for you. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life.  In today's episode, I'm interviewing Elyse Wagner. Elyse has always been a questioner, motivated to discover what's possible when you're really, truly in your soul purpose. For her, that purpose is to help others take ownership of their health. She first embraced this calling while in graduate school at Bastyr University, when she was diagnosed with celiac disease. In struggling with her diagnosis, she realized that she had always known, intuitively, that certain foods were creating “brain fog,” bloating, and mood swings. So she made the empowering decision to become the CEO of her health and tapped into the motivation to change her lifestyle. Elyse healed her mind and body by applying the knowledge she was learning in her master's program: that food and a positive mindset are the most powerful medicine. It became clear to her that she was called to empower others to choose health and educate them on how to achieve wellness. After earning a dual master's degree in holistic nutrition and clinical psychology, Elyse began practicing as a certified nutritionist and licensed mental health counselor. In 2013, she founded My Kitchen Shrink, Inc. and joined Dr. Scheinbaum at Feed Your Mind Wellness, LLC as a Health Coach, where they connected over their shared belief in the transformative power of Functional Medicine coaching. We have a true powerhouse on the show today—Brian Sanders. As you will hear, Brian has got his finger into everything—he's almost like a superhuman performer because he has done so much, like this incredible documentary Food Lies that you will hear about, which he has been working on for the last five or six years. The intro for the film (linked in the show notes) is truly the most sensational piece of filmmaking I have seen in a long time. This stunning film is so well-done, and it will wet your appetite for his forthcoming six-part series, expected to air on Netflix, which goes through the history of diet controversies and diet wars, human evolution and the ancestral diet—it's an amazing piece of work, and Brian is also doing great work through his podcast, Peak Human, which is how I was first exposed to him. In this deep-thinking, lengthy, hard-hitting show, you will hear about how Brian's background helps him look at things from a problem solving lens, what the entry point was to his obsession with health and what prompted him to quit job and change his career, and the events that led to his deep immersement in filmmaking and ancestral health. As you will hear, Brian sadly lost both of his parents when he was young, and because he grew up in such a “health conscious” family, they didn't realize the dangers of following conventional wisdom—at least, until it was too late. As tragic as this was, losing both his parents at such a young age is what gave Brian the motivation and passion to follow his heart and create this incredible project. You will also hear about the protein to energy ratio, the distinction between processed carbohydrates and natural, whole–food carbs, and a little bit about our mutual awakening to the Energy Balance concept.
