End of an Era? Rethinking the Shanaplan and the Leafs' Future with Mike Augello

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 59:25

It's only a little over a week since the Leafs were eliminated by the Florida Panthers and a lot has happened in this relatively short time. The biggest news? The Shanahan era has officially come to a close. In this episode, we discuss the legacy of Brendan Shanahan's tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs — from the excitement of drafting Auston Matthews to the strong alumni relations he helped rebuild. But despite early promise, the inability to adapt the "Shanaplan" may have cost this team its true potential. Shanahan's exit has left more questions than answers, so we invited our LTL Insider Mike Augello on to give us his impressions in the wake of this shake up. Together we break down how long-standing loyalty to the core has failed to deliver results, why grit and roster diversity matter in the playoffs, and how past trade and contract missteps continue to haunt the Leafs. With Mitch Marner's playoff performances raising eyebrows and Auston Matthews' leadership under a microscope, accountability is front and centre — both on the ice and in the front office. From coaching chemistry to free agency decisions, we explore how new leadership could finally shift the team's direction. Morgan Rielly's loyalty stands out in a locker room searching for identity, and we highlight how team culture, defensive strategies, and player development will shape the next chapter. Plus, what can the Leafs learn from ownership challenges in other Toronto franchises — like the Blue Jays under Rogers? And which names in this year's free agent class could bring the spark this team desperately needs? If you're a Leafs fan hungry for answers, reflection, and hope for the future, this one's for you. New season, same heartbreak. In this episode, we break down the Leafs' Game 7 loss and what went wrong in their series with the Panthers, after the disappointing end to their latest rollercoaster playoff run. From a lack of urgency and low shot totals to another rough start that set the tone early, the frustration is real — and Leafs Fans are feeling it! While the players definitely bear the brunt of this, we also take a hard look at some of the coaching decisions, especially around player lineups, and how injuries once again played a major role in derailing playoff hopes. The outside noise from critics and media is only growing louder, and with expectations still sky-high (and rightfully so), many in Leafs Nation are left asking: Where do we go from here? The conversation gets real as we talk about what needs to change this offseason We also dive into the emotional connection fans have with this team, why the disappointment cuts so deep, and why, despite it all, the love for the Blue and White never fades. If you're frustrated, heartbroken, or just trying to make sense of it all — this one's for you. Go Leafs Go!

We're back—and now streaming on hockeyhotstove.com! In this episode, we break down the highs, lows, and head-scratchers of the Leafs' playoff performance, as they are in the thick of it versus the Florida Panthers in this 2nd round series. Joseph Woll has been thrown into the fire with a tough goaltending assignment, while the team continues to struggle with scoring in key moments. Penalties sure disrupted the Leafs momentum in game 4, and Auston Matthews is getting heat despite his strong defensive play, but Tanev's toughness has been a game-changer—and we're here for it! The Leafs as a unit will need to take their cue from this tenacious D'man if they hope to come out on top in this now best of three showdown. We also shine a light on the community side of the game. We were delighted to have welcomed Ultimate Leafs Fan Mike Wilson on with us to talk about an important fundraising initiative he is championing in support of a cure for ALS; one that that hockey fans will definitely want to get involved with! Of course, while he was with us we also got his thoughts on the Leafs vs Panthers series, and chatted about his experiences following the Blue and White on the road. We could've talked to Mike for hours, as he has some incredible stories! The playoffs are all about momentum swings, and the Leafs have allowed the Panthers to get some. A quick start and taking our game to them will be the key to getting it back. Go Leafs Go! The Toronto Maple Leafs are just one win away from sending the Ottawa Senators packing, and in this episode, we're breaking down all the action. The Leafs' have so far showed a lot of composure under pressure and seem to have taken Coach Berube's message to heart. Add strong defensive play and elite goaltending to this mix and you have what should be a recipe for success in this first round and hopefully the makings of a long playoff run. But it's not all smooth sailing. We've been talking for some time about the critical importance of depth scoring if the Leafs hope to make a deep playoff push, and we seem to be getting some of that. But, as fans, we feel that we are still needing more from our big guns, and are looking for Matthews, Marner and Nylander to elevate their games even more. We wrap up the show with a look at a couple of the other series in progress. The playoff energy is absolutely buzzing — especially over in Montreal! With coaching strategies front and centre, we also ask the tough question: If Edmonton should fall in this first round, will it be time for a new voice behind the bench to take this team to the next level? Game 5 is now upon us and its crunch time for the Leafs! If we are to believe that the ghosts of the past have gone and they've truly bought in to Berube's process, it's time to change the narrative. It's felt a little different so far, so for now we are choosing to Beleaf! Go Leafs Go!

There were excellent performances across the whole lineup, which highlighted to us the need for consistency, as they close out the season. Speaking of consistency, the Buds have a great role model in John Tavares who for 7 years running has scored at least 30 goals! His 5 points in 4 games, including his 500th as a Leaf, earned him Star of the Week honours! The Leafs purportedly have one of the weaker schedules to close out the season, emphasizing the importance of winning against all the lower-ranked teams we'll be facing off against. As Jake McCabe said "It's important to get home ice". We also touch on the Mikko Rantanen situation and the effects his initial trade had on the market leading up to the deadline. Mike also shares his new venture hockeyhotstove.com with us, so be sure to check it out. It will have lots of NHL content, and of course our Leafs are sure to figure prominently! Lastly, we take a look ahead at the Leafs road trip which will conclude with their first visit vs the Utah Hockey Club. Its always a little bittersweet as we approach the deadline knowing that our team could look quite different next week. While we welcome the new players, we say goodbye to others, grateful for their contribution, all with the hopes that this new complement will be just what we need to get over the top. Welcome back to the NHL's regular season after a 2 week break! We are so pumped to be talking Leafs again with you! The grind of the NHL schedule gets going again for the Leafs with 3 games in 4 nights right off the hop! In this Quick Hits episode, we start off the show by putting a bow on the 4 Nations Tournament, and the dramatic OT win by Team Canada, breaking down the performances of our Leafs, and sharing our personal highlights. With the break behind us now, its time to turn the page and return to discussing the team and the  games that really matter, touching on the Leafs return to play over the weekend. We also take a look ahead at the upcoming trade deadline, and Brad Treliving's potential shopping list (more to come next episode). Finally, we wrap up the show, with a view to the up and coming schedule. A lot of road tilts next month, and an opportunity to bring the team together again. While the 4 Nations was a wild and exciting break from the ordinary, we are excited to be getting back to business, talking about the Team we love and getting ready for the games that matter most. The Leafs are coming off a great trip out west having won 3 of 4! During this roadie we also welcomed back John Tavares, Anthony Stolarz, and in a figurative way Morgan Rielly, who after a chat with the coach is starting to look like his old self again. In this Quick Hits episode, we take a look at the road trip and breakdown the games. There was lots to excited about, including a power play that finally started clicking, player milestones, and a hometown hatty! There is still room for improvement though, especially with the line combinations, something we are sure Brad Treliving will be looking at shoring up before the season resumes. Our star of the week for this segment is a long serving D-man that has been struggling to find his game. Don't know if the words of "encouragement" from the Coach did the trick, but something seems to have clicked for Morgan Rielly earning him Star of Week honours for this episode! When this show hits the airways, the 4 Nations Face Off puck drop will be mere hours away. I think we're actually more excited than we thought we would be to finally watch some of the best from these 4 countries square off. Come February 22nd though, everything will be on the line for the Leafs, and we will know in short order, who may be joining the roster for the stretch run. Enjoy the 4 Nations Tourney everyone! January wasn't a great month for the Leafs, with players still heading in and out of the lineup, and continued scoring struggles. Thankfully we've turned the page on the calendar, and are heading into the month of February with a chance to reset and recharge. In our intro to the show we discuss the big news in the NHL, the salary cap increase, and what it might mean for the Leafs. We're hoping that our team will finally get the cap relief we've all been waiting for. Then, in this instalment of the GBU, we welcome the 4 Nations break and talk about how it may benefit the Leafs. We also give a shout out..again, to Joseph Woll who has been a rock between the pipes during this difficult stretch. On the bad side, we lament the Leafs' home record, and lack of scoring. For the Third Period, we are excited to welcome guest Jeremy Ridgewell from Editor in Leaf, and get his insights on the team's offensive struggles, his thoughts on Matthews' participation in the 4 Nations Face Off and what he thinks the Leafs need to target to bolster their lineup leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline. This Western swing so far has been the antidote we've been looking for. With only a handful of games remaining before the break, here's hoping that the Buds can head into it on a high note! In this quick hits episode, we look at the week's games vs the afore mentioned Tampa Bay Lightning,  the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Ottawa Senators, and discuss how the Leafs managed to turn a great start, into a pretty meh week overall, squandering a chance to take 2 divisional games, and losing to a couple of opponents that they could meet in the first round if things continue to track as they have been. Even the worst weeks have a few great sparks though, and so we are thrilled to unveil Joseph Woll as our Star of the week! The Leafs had a 5 game win streak going and, of course it ended and it wasn't pretty! Enter the dog days of the NHL season... We're back to our usual format for this show starting with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, giving shout outs to the penalty kill, the one part of our specialty teams that is actually performing, as well as our most improved blue-liner. Sadly, some ugliness has crept into our segment for the first time this season, with both of us keying in on some similar themes, most notably the Power Play! Still there were a few highlight reel moments to celebrate, with kudos going to three talented forwards! Let's just say the letter 'M' figures prominently! Then for the Third Period, we preview the upcoming Four Nations Face-off tournament, discussing everything from the ticket prices, gauging fan excitement, to some interesting stats surrounding the rosters. Then finally, our conversation shifts to the Atlantic Division standings, as we take a look at the teams that we think could make a run at a playoff spot, including the Leafs and what they'll need to do to hang on to top spot. The second half of the NHL season is now upon us, and the next 6 weeks will present some challenges with the crazy schedule and lengthy break. While fans have been easing their way back into post Holiday routines, the Leafs have hit the ground running playing 3 games in 4 nights since New Year's Day! Mere days before he stepped back on the ice, Matthews himself intimated that he was uncertain about his return. Fast forward a few days and a calendar turn, and there he was, not only back on the ice vs the Bruins, but contributing in a big way, tallying 13 points combined with his line-mates and helping set up fellow Arizonite Knies for his first career hat-trick! The Captain wasn't the only one to make an impression. We also give some love to... you know it, Joseph Woll, who is building some stamina playing several consecutive games now, and 4 wins in 5. Next, its time to name our Quick Hits Star of the Week! Bobby McMan is this weeks star. With 2 goals and and assist, the point total definitely doesn't tell the whole story! Developing into a true power forward, he's using the energy created by his line-mates and taking it to the net! With yet another 2 goal game to add to his resume, Rocket McMann is most certainly worthy of Star of the Week honours! We wrap up the episode with our usual look ahead at whats coming up for the Leafs. Its gonna be a busy January! A lot of games to talk about after a very busy week! In this episode of Leafs Quick Hits, we discuss the Leafs' recent segment of games, focusing on the return of Auston Matthews, the dynamics of team line adjustments, and the struggles of players like Nick Robertson. We also analyze the upcoming returns of key players, and what that may mean for the roster. Then we spend a bit of time talking about the selection process for Team Canada, in particular we take a look at a few of the Leafs that may have been on the bubble. John Tavares may not have made the 4 Nations cut but he sure caught our attention this week, which was good enough to earn him Star of the Week honours for this episode! To wrap we take a look ahead at another busy week, which includes some games against a few bottom feeders, including 2 divisional match-ups that we feel are must-wins for the Buds. The next few weeks leading up to the Christmas break should see the infirmary doors opening up with more players rejoining the roster. The NHL season is now underway for real, and each team is now playing for keeps. Its still early, but we all know that missteps in the early days can spell disaster in April so every point counts. In this episode we're going to cut to the chase and review the Leafs first 3 games, but first we kick things off with a brief introduction to us and our show. Every season brings new listeners, so we wanted to share a bit about us, and how our Podcast came to be with the new members of our Ladies Talkin' Leafs community. Welcome to everyone! With introductions out of the way, its time to get into the latest Leafs news. With the regular season, we are back to our usual show format beginning with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, where we spotlight a defensive stalwart, a young power forward, as well as a few early areas of concern. Then for our first regular season LTL Highlight Reel, we celebrate a newcomer who has made an immediate and passionate impact, the defensive strides the team has made so far, and continue our love-in with the goalies. To wrap things up, we take a deep dive into the NHL and Leafs' schedules, highlighting some important dates, notable games and potential road trips for the coming season. Ah, its sure awesome to have meaningful games on the calendar, knowing there will be hockey to watch every week for the next six months and beyond! This is an interesting time for the Leafs, as they make Berube's new system their own. There will be ups and downs no doubt, but it is already apparent that the foundation is being built. The Leafs gave us some big news to talk about in naming Auston Matthews the 26th captain of the team! All things being equal, we don't think MLSE could've executed the move any better and by most accounts the official reveal was received positively by players and Leafs Nation alike. John Tavares handled the transition with grace and we are certain will continue to be a valuable presence in the dressing room. The appointment of Matthews as captain begins a new chapter and will help bridge the generational divide within the team. The press conference was filled with touching moments, including Tavares' support for Matthews and his kids wearing Matthews jerseys. Moving forward, we are sure JT will thrive without the added pressure of being captain, and we expect Matthews to grow into the role and show even more leadership on and off the ice. One thing is certain, the honour of wearing the C for the Toronto Maple Leafs is not lost on AM34! Our lasting impression will definitely be the image of him beaming with pride as the announcement was made and he was presented with his new jersey. Welcome to the Matthews era! Go Leafs Go! It's been a fairly quiet off-season for the Maple Leafs so far. In taking a bit of a closer look though, Brad Treliving and Co., have done some tidy business in the back-ground. In this episode we review what the front office has accomplished so far, and what we expect is still on their to-do list. We open the show with our Leaf Talk segment reviewing what the Leafs have accomplished to this point in the off-season, highlighting Development Camp, and some of the standout players. We then discuss the recent management changes, including the hiring of Mark Leach as the new Director of Amateur Scouting, and of course we also discuss the recent signing of Alex Nylander. in addition we discuss the uncertainty surrounding the unfinished business of the Jani Hakanpää free agent signing and still un-signed Nick Robertson, and potential impacts these have on the team. Of course, the conversation would not be complete without a mention of the ongoing Mitch Marner trade rumours. Then we switch gears as we rate the summer shenanigans of a few of our Leafs with a fun Patio Season LTL Highlight Reel, To wrap up the show, in the Third Period, we discuss some of the changes we will see on and off this ice for the up and coming 2024-25 NHL season. Suffice it to say, things are going to look quite different to start the season in a lot of NHL markers. One thing that is not changing, is that Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph will be back again to call the games in Toronto, which is great news and a no-brainer! As we publish this show, only 67 days until opening night, which is exciting to think about and hopefully a good omen! This has been one exciting week for the NHL! Before the dust had even settled on an electric Stanley Cup win by the Florida Panthers, the league pivoted right to the NHL Awards, followed in quick succession by the Draft at Sphere and the opening of the Free Agency. For Leaf fans like us this also signalled an end to the lull in Leafs news, giving us lots to talk about in a jam packed show, our first of Patio Season! We start the conversation discussing the NHL draft and free agency, and touch on the moves made by the Maple Leafs. The draft at Sphere in Las Vegas was a real spectacle, giving us lots to discuss as we share our thoughts on the Leafs' draft picks. Then we turn our attention to the team's signings prior to the opening of free agency, including Max Domi, Timothy Liljegren, and Joseph Woll. For the Third Period, we welcome back our LTL Insider Mike Augello to break down the signings made by the Leafs during the opening hours of the NHL free agency period, getting Mike's insights on the team's moves in terms of goaltending, defense, and forward positions. We also discuss the signings and trades made by other teams in the Atlantic Division, as well as give our opinions on the winners and losers of free agency so far. To close the show, we sadly say goodbye to another former Leaf as we reflect on the passing of Sergei Berezin and share our memories of his time with the Team. Before we sign off, we have a programming note. As we enter the off-season and head to the Patio, we'll be moving to a monthly schedule until September. Look for our next episode August 7th, unless some big Leafs' news breaks, in which case we'll have you covered with a bonus episode. 'Til we meet again, enjoy the the sweet summer breezes, company of good friends, and a cool drink or two. Until next time cheers and Go Leafs Go! Takeaways The NHL draft took place at Sphere in Las Vegas, providing a visually stunning experience. The Toronto Maple Leafs' draft picks were met with mixed reactions, with some experts questioning the value of their selections. The Leafs re-signed a few key players, including Max Domi, Timothy Liljegren, and Joseph Woll. The contracts for these players were seen as reasonable given the current market. Durability is a concern for some of the players, but their abilities and potential make them valuable additions to the team. The Toronto Maple Leafs made several signings and trades during the NHL free agency period to address their goaltending, defense, and forward positions. The hosts believe that the Nashville Predators were the biggest winners of free agency, as they made significant additions to their roster, including Stephen Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. The hosts discuss the signings and trades made by other teams in the Atlantic Division, including the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, and Ottawa Senators. They express their condolences for the passing of former Leafs player Sergey Berezin and highlight his contributions to the team during his time with the organization. It's been almost eerily quiet in Leaf Land over the last few weeks, with only a few hushed exits and a hiring on the coaching front to speak of. With the Cup still up for grabs, and Gary's unwritten "No Announcements" rule, its probably to be expected (the Stanley Cup Final is still being contested as I write this). But, we cover the Toronto Maple Leafs though, which means there's never a shortage of ongoing off-season storylines to follow and discuss. In this episode we open the show touching on a variety of topics including the NHL salary cap increase, the Four Nations Face-Off tournament, and the upcoming NHL docu-series on Prime Video. Then in our next segment our conversation turns to--you guessed it--Leaf talk, where we cover the Leafs coaching changes, the status of some of the current player contract negotiations, and of course the uncertainty surrounding Mitch Marner. Next, the LTL Highlight Reel returns, celebrating a few of our favourite moments from the 2023-34 Leafs Season, including a milestone for the Captain, an incredible example of player resilience, and a couple of very memorable NHL events! We wrap up the show discussing the upcoming NHL draft and free agency, as well as potential players the Leafs could target. With the team in need of help at Centre and Defense, look for Treliving and Co, to bolster both positions through the draft and free agency. We also contemplate whether management will entertain any trades involving their first round pick, Marner or both! This is definitely the quiet before the storm for the Leafs, but we expect that once the Stanley Cup Champion is crowned we will be getting a tonne of news on the team. We'll be back on July 3rd from the Patio with our first official Off-season episode, where we're sure to have some thoughts on the fallout from the draft and free agency. 'Till next time, cheers and Go Leafs Go! Takeaways The NHL salary cap is increasing for the next season The Four Nations Face-Off tournament will replace next year's All-Star game The Leafs have made changes to their coaching staff Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi are UFAs and negotiations are ongoing There is uncertainty surrounding Mitch Marner's future with the Leafs The conversation ends with a highlight reel of memorable moments from the previous season The hosts discuss the captaincy of the Toronto Maple Leafs and express their desire for Auston Matthews to take over from John Tavares in the future. They highlight Ilya Samsonov's turnaround and impressive performance after being recalled. The hosts reflect on the NHL events involving the Leafs, including the Global Series in Sweden and the All-Star festivities in Toronto. They discuss potential draft picks for the Leafs and the need for defensive prospects. The hosts mention potential free agent targets for the Leafs, including Chandler Stevenson and Laurent Brossoit. Welcome to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs!  Unfortunately, for the Leafs it has started with a game one loss to the Bruins but it's only the first game of a 7 game series. One game, and as usual some hockey people are already saying the series is over. For this episode we welcome back LTL Insider Mike Augello to discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs' performance in the playoffs so far, specifically in their opening game loss to the Boston Bruins. Mike brings you all his criticisms and concerns surrounding the Leafs, including those surrounding their goaltending, lack of scoring, undisciplined play, and coaching. We also touch on the importance of players stepping up in the playoffs and the need for the team to play to their strengths and stick to their roles. We wrap things up with a discussion on who should start in Game 2 and whether Willy will be back, as his absence left a big hole in the the lineup and had a huge impact on the result of game 1. Leafs Nation, while we all felt that all too familiar sinking feeling in the pit of our stomach's after game 1, we also know we have been here before and that a bounce back in game 2 can bring us a completely different set of emotions. Here's to hoping that when we chat next our Buds are back on the winning side of things. GO Leafs GO! Takeaways The Toronto Maple Leafs' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the playoffs has raised concerns and criticisms about their performance. The Leafs' goaltending, particularly Samsonov's recent struggles, is a major concern. The team needs to improve their scoring and special teams, especially the power play and penalty kill. Undisciplined play and players trying to do too much are hindering the Leafs' performance. The coaching staff, particularly Sheldon Keefe, is also under scrutiny. Players need to step up in the playoffs and perform to their potential. The Leafs' mental preparation and ability to maintain a consistent level of play are crucial for success. The starting goaltender for Game 2 is a point of discussion, with Samsonovs performance being a determining factor. The hosts express concern about the performance of the Leafs' goaltender, Joseph Wall, and discuss the possibility of making a change in net. They highlight the importance of goaltending in boosting the team's confidence and providing a solid foundation for success. The absence of William Nylander in the lineup is seen as a significant loss, as he has been a key player in previous playoff runs. The hosts discuss the lack of depth in the Leafs' lineup, particularly on the third line, and the need for improvement in that area. They emphasize the impact of special teams, specifically the power play, and the need for Nylander's presence in that aspect of the game. The hosts speculate on potential lineup changes, including the possibility of TJ Brodie returning and the decision of who to sit in his place. They analyze the overall defensive depth of the Leafs and compare it to the Bruins' defensive lineup. The hosts share their predictions for the Stanley Cup playoffs, with one host choosing the New York Rangers and the other choosing the Dallas Stars as potential finalists. They discuss the importance of faceoffs and possession in the game and highlight the need for improvement in that area for the Leafs. The hosts provide a list of top sports bars in Toronto to watch Leafs playoff games. Happy 100th! Sizing Up the Leafs' Playoff Prospects with Damien Cox and Mark Osborne

We're celebrating our 100th episode! Joining us to discuss the Leafs and the upcoming NHL playoffs are  journalist and author Damien Cox and former Leaf and current Pro Scout for the NHL's LA Kings, Mark Osborne. Damien Cox, a media and broadcasting veteran, shares his thoughts on Auston Matthews' historic season, the Leafs' defense, Sheldon Keefe's coaching, and the potential impact Keith Pelley may have as the new CEO of MLSE. Then, in our conversation with Mark Osborne, we chat about what its like playing with record-breaking teammates, the role of a shutdown line, the pressure of playing in Toronto, and his experience as a pro scout with the LA Kings. He shares insights from his time as a player, his perspective on the media, and the importance of the best players performing in the playoffs. We're so happy to be able to bring you the insights of these two savvy pros! With Damien Cox's extensive knowledge of the Leafs and the Canadian sports media landscape, and Mark Osborne's vast experience in hockey on and off the ice, it was truly a treat to get their perspectives on the Leafs' season and what the team may need to do to see success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The countdown is now on, and this years playoff journey will begin in earnest on April 20th. As Damien said, it will either be heartbreak or euphoria! Like all of Leafs Nation, we're hoping for a lot more of the latter this time around. Go Leafs Go! Takeaways Auston Matthews is having a historic season and is the most prolific offensive player in the history of the Leafs franchise. The Leafs' defense is a concern going into the playoffs, but the team's success will ultimately depend on their ability to score goals. There is debate about whether Sheldon Keefe is the right coach for the Leafs, but the decision ultimately lies with MLSE. The new CEO of MLSE, Keith Pelley, may have an impact on the business side of the organization, particularly in negotiations with the NHL for a new TV deal. Playing with record-breaking players is both routine and special, as it showcases the unique abilities and skills of these individuals. The role of a shutdown line in today's NHL has evolved, with teams now expecting their third line to contribute offensively as well as defensively. Playing in Toronto comes with added pressure due to the media scrutiny and the high expectations of the fan base. As a pro scout, Osborne's job involves evaluating players for trades and free agency, and his input is valued by the LA Kings' management team. Osborne appreciates the growth of women's hockey and the increased coverage of the sport in the media. Welcome to our 1st volume of LTL Quick Hits!  In this bonus episode, we discuss the upcoming NHL playoffs and who would prefer to play the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. When we last spoke with Rachel Doerrie, we asked her to weigh in on the potential matchups between the Leafs, the Boston Bruins, and the Florida Panthers. In this excerpt, Rachel explains why Boston would probably want to take on the Buds and we definitely agree! With the  Bruins historical dominance over the Leafs and the mental advantage they hold, no doubt they would be licking their chops. We also discuss the Panthers' strong offensive weapons and the goaltending factor. One thing is for sure, at some point the Leafs' playoff hopes will need to go through Boston. Beating the Bruins could be just the thing to galvanize the Leafs and relieve them of the mental burden they've been carrying. After that anything goes! Go Leafs Go! Its inevitable that when the annual St. Paddy's Day game rolls around, our thoughts drift to the history of the team we love, and this year is no exception, so we begin the show remembering Pat Burns. In this episode, the Good the Bad and the Ugly returns and we spotlight the performances of Ilya Samsonov and Pontus Holmberg, critique of Sheldon Keefe's coaching decisions, as well as express our concerns about the penalty kill. Then for the Third Period we welcome Rachel Doerrie to help us analyze the Leafs' performance at the trade deadline. We discuss various topics related to the Leafs' moves, including the impact of not having a second-round pick, the goaltending situation for the playoffs, and the evaluation of Timothy Liljegren. And she pulls no punches with respect to her thoughts on Keefe's adjustments in the wake of Mitch Marner's injury! She is a wealth of knowledge and we appreciated her expert analysis and had fun getting to know her a bit better. To wrap up we preview the upcoming games and discuss the team's playoff positioning. Lots still to iron out before the playoffs begin. Go Leafs Go! Takeaways The Toronto St. Pat's hockey team holds a special place in the hearts of Leafs fans. Reaching 200 subscribers on YouTube is a significant milestone for the show. Ilya Samsonov has been performing exceptionally well for the Leafs. Sheldon Keefe's coaching decisions have been a topic of discussion and critique. The Leafs' penalty kill needs improvement. The Leafs' performance at the trade deadline was disappointing. Not having a second-round pick may have hurt the Leafs at the trade deadline, but the value of draft picks is often overestimated by other teams. The Leafs should consider a rotation between their goaltenders in the playoffs to keep them fresh and maximize their performance. Timothy Liljegren has shown promise and should be given more opportunities to prove himself. While analytics and data analysis are important, it's also important to enjoy watching the game and not get too caught up in the numbers. The Leafs' upcoming games and playoff positioning will be crucial in determining their success in the postseason.
