Alexandra Allred made sports (and medical) history through activism and determination. When she learned that women were not allowed in bobsled, she lobbied for equal status with a relentless letter-writing campaign. It had not yet occurred to her that she had no idea how to actually bobsled. As a former fighter in martial arts, she had only cared that women were banned from a sport deemed “too dangerous” and “too fast.” When told that the women's program had no by-laws and was therefore unofficial, Allred co-authored the first U.S. women's bylaws and helped secure a sponsor. She ultimately won the U.S. Nationals in September 1994, making sports history as she was named to the first-ever U.S. women's bobsled team. When the United States Olympic Committee named her Athlete of the Year for her sport, it made international news that Allred was also pregnant. At the time, there was very little data on elite pregnant athletes who did powerlifting and plyometrics. While Allred became the “poster child” of the Case Western OB/GYN international study, Allred was squatting 375 lbs. and clocked at 20 MPH sprints into her second trimester. The results of this study changed how to measure the safety of baby in utero for competitive athletes. Both the United States and International Olympic Committee used Allred's training data as a safety guide for pregnant athletes and she served as a fitness/nutrition expert for two decades. Today, Allred is an adjunct professor at Tarleton State University and continues to write/research and work with those living with special needs. Her most recent book: When Women Stood - The Untold History of Females Who Changed Sports and the World. Was published in February 2023. About the book: When Women Stood - The Untold History of Females Who Changed Sports and the World. An unapologetically candid and illuminating history of women and their fight for equality, told through the influential world of sports. From early Amazons to modern-day athletes, women have been fighting for their rightful place in the world. The history of these female athletes—whether warriors on the battlefield or competitors in the sports arena—has often been neglected, yet it is through sports that women have changed society, gaining entry into education, travel, politics, and more. When Women Stood is an eye-opening chronicle of the amazing women who refused to accept the status quo and fought for something better for themselves and for those who would follow. Featuring exclusive insight from athletes such as Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Kathrine Switzer, Nancy Lieberman, Briana Scurry, and Nancy Hogshead-Maker, this book includes the stories of female football players, Olympic athletes, powerlifters, and soccer stars, of historians, archeologists, crusaders, and scientists. Women's sports history cannot be told without also telling the story of the fight for gender and racial equality, economics, medical biases, gay and transgender history, violence, religion, media, abuse, and activism. When Women Stood is the first to go beyond the record books and gold medal counts to truly dig into the vital role women and sports have played in instigating change in society as a whole. And it shows that, despite seemingly unsurmountable odds, the true spirit of the female athlete can never be restrained. Dave Durante, former USA Gymnastics Olympic team member and co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness, talks about his journey from elite athlete to coach. He details the importance of consistency in movement of the body, and the value of smaller but consistent periods of activity each day. Dave shares tips on how cancer survivors can start to regain some of their strength and mobility back after treatments, and the importance of having support along the way to maintain consistency and achieve fitness goals. He also reminds us to prioritize the process and not the end result. Key Highlights: The importance of mental fitness to help improve physical fitness. Tips for cancer survivors to regain strength and mobility after treatment. The power of consistency and focusing on the process rather than the end result to achieve goals. About our guest: Dave Durante is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and a member of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team as an alternate. Following his retirement from competition, Dave helped coach his alma mater, Stanford University, to an NCAA Team Title in 2009. He remained involved in the sport by serving on the Athlete Advisory Committee with the United States Olympic Committee and the USA Gymnastics Men's Technical Committee until 2018. From 2013-2015, Dave was a lead coach with the CrossFit Gymnastics L1 course, where he developed the CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Course. Dave is now the co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness and Power Monkey Camp, which host adult fitness events worldwide. They also provide technical education in various training specialties through their social media platforms and their Power Monkey Training app. Key Moments: 12 minutes: On the importance of mental health to perform - Leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, I just missed out on the Olympic team. I was part of the Olympic selection process team, one of the last ten guys. They took eight to Athens. I was one of the two that they didn't take to Athens. I did everything I could, and I was in the best shape of my life. I was so ready competitively, but I was mentally a mess. Everything that I'm doing well physically, the complete opposite is happening on the mental side. So I found a balance in my teammates and things outside of the sport. 36 minutes: How to ease back into exercise after cancer treatments - Start with bodyweight. Really phase one is about more mobility as we discussed, but also a stronger core. So those are two things that we recommend people doing on a daily basis. You should spend five to ten minutes on core work. You spend five to ten minutes on mobility work on a daily basis. 40 minutes: On the power of consistency - It's imperative on you to wake up every day and put a priority on how important these things are to you. It doesn't need to start massive. And I think that that's the thing that's really important with consistency. It can start as easy as I'm going to walk to the end of the block today and come back and just do that for this week. When we talk about consistency, it needs to start with something attainable, something small, one day at a time, and then allow it to grow from there.Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Alexandra Allred, an athlete, author, environmental advocate, and fitness instructor, shared the story behind her title with us on March 1, 2023.Alexandra made sports (and medical) history through activism and determination. When she learned that women were not allowed in bobsled, she lobbied for equal status with a relentless letter-writing campaign. It had not yet occurred to her that she had no idea how to actually bobsled. As a former fighter in martial arts, she had only cared that women were banned from a sport deemed “too dangerous” and “too fast.”When told that the women's program had no by-laws and was therefore unofficial, Allred co-authored the first U.S. women's bylaws and helped secure a sponsor. Upon retirement, Sports Illustrated asked her to try out for a women's professional football team and write about her experiences in the award-winning book, Atta Girl! A Celebration of Women in Sport (Wish Publishing). Allred later became the first American (male or female) to test drive the Volvo Gravity car for Volvo magazine in North America.SUE SAYS"Alex made history through activism and sheer determination after learning that women were not allowed to participate in bobsled. She lobbied for equal status by launching a relentless letter-writing campaign at the powers that be. Although she had no idea how to actually bobsled, she cared that women were banned from a sport deemed “too dangerous” and “too fast” and decided to do something about it. Watch Alex talk about the life experiences she had including Dyslexia and a sexual assault that led to her determination to help others."Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/women-to-watch-r/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The ALL ME® Podcast Bloodwork Analysis and Athletic Performance - Jennifer Gibson, MS, RD There are more than 7 billion clinical lab tests performed in the US each year. Some of these tests are part of a routine checkup for individuals while others dive much deeper into evaluating someone's health. Athletes are no different in that many collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes have specific blood panels drawn and evaluated before they start their respective seasons. But what is the significance around this as can the results of an athlete's blood work have any impact on performance markers. In this podcast, we speak with Sports Dietitian Jennifer Gibson who has worked with Olympic and Professional athletes about specific markers that are a critical part of the assessment process of her job. We discuss which markers are most commonly deficient or elevated in athletes along with specific blood work that can influence and athlete's recovery, strength, and level of inflammation. Furthermore, we dive into common nutrient deficiencies that she has seen on a regular basis along with strategies to correct them.
