An incredible achievement for the author, advocate, coach and all-round inspirational athlete who has achieved more in sport than many of us can only dream of.  In addition to her fourteen IRONMAN World Champion titles, she is a four-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion, a WTC Female Athlete of the Year,  A multiple USA Triathlon Female Grandmaster of the Year, An Inductee to the USAT Hall of Fame and in 2020 was inducted into the Port Angeles High School Athletic Hall of Fame for her success in Badminton.  Cherie truly embraces the life of an athlete, living and breathing the sport of triathlon. When she is not training for her own races she is using her passion, dedication and commitment to triathlon to help change the lives of children in inner-city San Bernardino in California. The Exceeding Expectations Foundation which Cherie founded has for 20 years been encouraging at-risk children to move their lives in a positive direction, using the sport of triathlon as the vehicle.  Cherie is softly spoken, yet her tenacity, courage and determination is stronger than many people half her age. She is a shining star in sport and in life, her age may be slowing her down physically in sport but her appetite for life and for success shows no signs of slowing down. She may have made her final appearance on the finish line in Kona in 2022, but we can expect to see her on plenty more finish lines before she stops racing altogether. This is a truly inspiring episode of the podcast and if you ever thought you couldn't do something or that you are too old to try something new then, Cherie is the epitome of 'you can do anything you set your mind to, you just have to give it a try'.

Thirty four years ago, at the age of 42, Cherie Gruenfeld went from lying in bed eating sticky buns and watching the LA Marathon to buying running shoes and a book on how to run a marathon the very next day. She wanted to know what she was capable of. At 76 years old, after completing 28 Ironman races, winning 13 World Ironman titles and setting numerous course records around the world, she still does. Cherie is still eyeing up world records, setting goals, and living life by her philosophy: “I never want to wonder what if.” She also gives back as she pushes forward as a triathlon coach and as the Founder and Director of a non-profit foundation, Exceeding Expectations for at-risk kids in the San Bernardino area, using the sport of triathlon to redirect their lives. Cherie talks frankly about what it takes to stay on top of your game as you get older; how she approaches training and recovery, overcoming adversity, and much more. As we prepare for the holidays and a time of joy and inspiration we wanted to revisit some of our most inspirational interviews. In this short episode, we revisit our interview with Katherine Switzer, who shares her story of being the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon. A historic event for women and women's running as told by the woman who did it all.    We also revisit our interview with Pat Gallant-Charette, who at the age of 68 was recently inducted in to the Open Water Marathon swimming Hall of Fame. Pat didn't start open-water swimming until she was almost 50 and despite a fear of deep water, has swam the English Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar and around the island of Manhattan.  Last we share some of our interview with Cherie Gruenfeld.  Cherie who didn't start running until her 40's, holds thirteen world Ironman titles and seven world records.  All of these women are inspirations because of their physical accomplishments but even more so in what they do to help others.   Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from Molly and Angela! We'll see you in 2020.

Cherie Gruenfeld is a 18-time winner of the Ironman Triathlon. She holds 13 world titles. For those who don't know what the Ironman entails, it is: A 2.4 Mile Swim 112 Mile Bicycle Ride 26.2 Mile Run (Marathon) Cherie will be 75 in July and she now runs the 70.3 Triathlons (that's half of the above) and will be doing FIVE of those this year! This was truly one of the best interviews we've gotten to do. Angela and I, perhaps because we've trained for a half-marathon together and because Angela's family includes some competitive cyclers, were just mesmerized by what Cherie has accomplished athletically. Beyond that though, she has such a quiet confidence and passion for her sport. She has carried that passion into a non-profit foundation for at-risk kids in San Bernadino county called Exceeding Expectations. Come listen to a great Super Ager example, and someone who is living a happier, longer life! Cherie Gruenfeld

Cherie Gruenfeld exemplifies the ability to remain competitive regardless of age.   Much like many of our listeners, Cherie picked up endurance sports a little later in life - starting running in her early 40s and triathlons in her late 40s.   Now at the age of 73, she is one of the most heavily decorated Masters triathletes in the world and still competes in half Ironmans to this day.   In this episode, Cherie walks us through her late entry into competitive running and triathlons, her philosophy for finding continued success in the sport, and a little about her nonprofit organization through which she works to help underprivileged kids achieve more than they ever thought possible.   Between her advice on longevity in the sport and her outlook on self betterment (even when that may no longer mean setting PR’s), Cherie’s story has something for everyone. Here are some of the topics we’ll discuss today: What motivated Cherie to start running and competing in triathlons How she has maintained her competitive streak, both physically and mentally What makes the Ironman World Championship at Kona so special to Cherie How Cherie is giving back through sport and opportunity Questions Cherie is asked: 3:25 What is your athletic background? 5:14 What inspired you to start running? 8:36 Did you have any setbacks or struggles when you first started? 10:12 When did you realize you had the potential to be a competitive triathlete? 10:55 How did you get interested in triathlons? 19:04 Did you know at your first Kona event that you could become one of the most decorated Masters triathletes in the world? 19:45 What did becoming the first woman over age 55 to complete an Ironman in less than 12 hours mean to you? 23:14 Why did you select Kona as the event you wanted to break the 12-hour barrier? 24:18 What makes Kona so special to you? 26:21 What makes Kona something you look forward to year after year? 28:22 Is Kona the Boston Marathon of triathlons? 28:44 Which part of the triathlon is your strongest and which is your weakest? 30:25 Is trying to set new goals within each component of the triathlon part of what keeps you going? 36:47 How has BodyHealth helped you compete at such a high level for so long while remaining healthy? 39:21 Do you attribute much of your success to these supplements and how did you feel prior to and after using them regularly? 41:39 Besides the supplements, what other tips do you have for maintaining competitive longevity? 43:32 What is your organization, Exceeding Expectations, and what is its mission? 49:12 What’s next for you?   Quotes by Cherie: “I would never have guessed that I would have had the opportunities that I did.” “If you have to ask (about Kona), you haven’t been there.” “There’s a bonding among all Ironmen; you meet another Ironman on a plane and you don’t even have to ask questions, you just automatically know certain things about the character of the person.” “My swim and my bike are within 10 or 15 minutes of what they used to be, but the run? There’s no way that I am going to run a 4-hour marathon in an Ironman any longer. But I’m still one of the top runners in the age group.” “You cannot race the way you used to; you simply are NOT going to, and you have to accept that.” “Sleeping is critical to being ready for the next day.” “Don’t wait till you’re a Masters athlete to start thinking about maintaining health and longevity, because if you intend to stay in this for the long haul, you gotta start when you’re younger. You have to develop these good, healthy habits, you have to understand that you’re not invincible, that you can be taken down and it’s up to you to take care of yourself so that some of that doesn’t happen.” “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run    Want more awesome interviews and advice?
