“Overman was killed inside the park. The baby was caught inside the park. Its mother is inside the park.” We watched “Jaws 3-D” with our friends, the Dames of Doom themselves, Nicole and Tess from Doom Generation Podcast, and we're cancelling our Sea World annual passes! We'd like to think there is some sort of continuity to the first two Jaws films, but the Brody brothers have been aged up faster than a baby on a soap opera. Dennis Quaid steps in as the eldest Brody bro, and he's the head of attraction maintenance (or something) at Sea World Orlando, and he is VERY hot and heavy with the main marine biologist and animal trainer played by none other than Bess Armstrong (yes, the mom from My So-Called Life). Somehow, a mother great white shark is trapped in the park, and mama and baby are wreaking havoc. Younger Brody bro is afraid of the water (rightfully), but Lea Thompson and her sexy waterskiing wiles lure him in on several, many occasions. At some point, this turns more into a disaster movie than your average Jaws “thriller,” but the real-life Sea World setting makes the trapped tourists trope fun.  The 3D gags are pretty much an afterthought, but this movie is HIGH CAMP.  Big mama shark ramming headfirst into an undersea restaurant is Cinema! Listen, animal rights are a very real issue, and we're not advocating for Sea World, but the trained dolphins giving us a perfect freeze-frame ending worthy of a Lisa Frank notebook is epic. Step into the DeLorean with hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell as they revisit the mind-bending 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II. This zany time-traveling adventure pushes Marty McFly and Doc Brown to their limits as they navigate multiple timelines, alternate realities, and a dystopian version of Hill Valley ruled by the villainous Biff Tannen. The hosts dive deep into how Back to the Future Part II differs from its predecessor, noting its darker tone and more complex narrative structure. They explore how the film effectively splits into three distinct sections: the retro-futuristic 2015 sequence, the nightmarish alternate 1985, and the return to 1955 that cleverly interweaves with events from the first film. Nathan shares his initial disappointment with the sequel upon its 1989 release, while Krissy maintains her longtime love for its imaginative storytelling.Special praise is given to the performances, particularly Thomas F. Wilson's versatility in playing multiple versions of Biff Tannen and Lea Thompson's range as various incarnations of Lorraine. The hosts also discuss how the film introduced many viewers to concepts like the multiverse and alternate timelines through Doc Brown's simple yet effective explanation of the space-time continuum.Other topics covered:The film's prescient portrayal of Biff as a Trump-like figure in the alternate 1985The extensive merchandising campaign, including Pizza Hut's promotional sunglassesChristopher Lloyd's ageless performance as Doc BrownHow the film serves as part one of a larger story concluding in Back to the Future Part IIIThe practical effects and set design used to transform Hill Valley across different time periodsThe controversial addition of Marty's "chicken" character flawThe enduring appeal of the film's retro-futuristic 2015 aestheticThe Universal Studios clock tower set and its various iterationsWhile rating the film, Nathan gives it a 7.5 out of 10 sports almanacs, noting how his appreciation has grown over time, while Krissy awards it a solid 9, placing it just below the perfect 10s she gives to parts one and three. The hosts conclude that while Part II may be the most divisive entry in the trilogy, its ambitious storytelling and creative world-building have helped it age into a unique and essential chapter in the Back to the Future saga. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! KJ here, team. In this episode, Jennie asks the questions, and I walk us through the whole thing from start to finish—the options, the renewals, the moment we thought we were getting the rights back and the big calls that finally convinced me this was really going to happen—and then of course what it's like when it DOES. Above are a few glam shots from the premiere screening, which will never not be one of the biggest nights of my career. I'm not sure how you top it. You can watch The Chicken Sisters—an 8 episode series starring Schuyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson, and Wendie Malick on Hallmark Plus (or Amazon Prime) now. Here's a little preview on YouTube, too.Hey readers—KJ here. This episode of #AmWriting is brought to you by my latest, Playing the Witch Card. I wrote this at a moment when I needed more magic in my life—but it turned out to be a book about how until we know who we are and what makes us happy, even magic doesn't help. My main character, Flair, is a total control freak who fears the chaos created by her family deck of Tarot cards and the cookies it inspires her to make until she decides that she can harness their power to control the world and people around her—but that's not what the cards are for at all. I was inspired by what I see as the real magic of Tarot cards—and tea leaves and palm reading and every form of oracle: they help us to see and understand our own stories. As someone for whom stories are pretty much everything, I love that. You can buy Playing the Witch Card on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org and my local indie—and I hope you'll love it too. To the children of the '80s, the only thing cooler than the idea of space camp is the idea behind this forgotten 80's flick, in which Lea Thompson, Joaquin Phoenix, and their fellow teen team members must figure out how to land an actual space shuttle after a freak accident at NASA's Kennedy Space Center launches them into outer space. It could have been one of the biggest movies of 1986 but then tragedy happened. When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in January of 86, so did the film's marketing plan and hopes of blockbuster status. But thanks to VHS and HBO, it eventually found its audience and inspired future scientists, pilots and even astronauts.  So climb in the Space Shuttle, buckle up, and watch the oxygen levels as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Jeff Atkins, Ben Carpenter, and Nicholas Pepin (from "Pop Culture Roulette Podcast") discuss “SpaceCamp” from 1986 on this special bonus episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: The footage of the Space Shuttle Orbiter landing is from Challenger touching down at the conclusion of STS-8. This was the first night landing of the Space Shuttle program. In earlier drafts of the storyline, a Russian shuttle is sent up to rescue the American kids. At the end of the film, it was to be revealed that Russian kids had rescued the American kids. Is Cherry Bomb one of the greatest movie bands of all time? And can someone please let Lea Thompson do the remake she has wanted to for so long? Instead of answers, let us share our duck sex trauma with you.

The first "Jaws" movie, directed by a young up-and-comer named Steven Spielberg, is a masterpiece; an incredibly tense, well-made, and well-acted film that created the summer blockbuster as we know it and changed the movie business forever. The first sequel, Jaws 2, can't reach the heights of the original but it was a respectable enough follow-up. Then there's this 80s flick! Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, again! Set at Florida's Sea World, the plot centers on a group of courageous individuals who must band together to confront a colossal menace lurking beneath the waves. When the underwater tunnels become the hunting ground for a massive shark, chaos at the park ensues, and survival becomes priority number one in a battle against this ultimate predator. So grab your classic 3-D glasses, meet us at the underwater observation deck and don't forget to turn on the pressure tubes as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Tyra Williams and Ben Carpenter discuss “Jaws 3-D” from 1983 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The Brody brothers (Sean and Mike) are the only two characters that appear in all four Jaws movies. They are also played by different actors in every installment. Unlike the previous two, or subsequent, Jaws films, the shark in Jaws 3 only surfaces once throughout the entire film. Excluding shots of the shark's fin, the only time it breaches the surface of the water is when it attacks and injures Lea Thompson's character Kelly Ann. What's up, dudes? There are a lot of classic Christmas commercials! They've shaped our perception of the Christmas season since we were little. Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax and Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette join me live to watch some lesser known ‘80s Christmas commercials!Cool Spot rides a toy fire truck in a 1988 7Up commercial. Young versions of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lea Thompson, and Elizabeth Shue regale us with carols in a 1982 Burger King commercial. Oh yeah, McDonald's sued Burger King because of it as well. Meanwhile, Joey is making homemade garland with a needle and thread and Kix cereal. He's snacking too!Artists send holiday wishes to “Blue Christmas” by Elvis in an MTV commercial. The Dillard patriarch cradles his granddaughter in a cozy Christmas scene. Then a choir sings, “Hello, Taco Bell!” in their best Handel impression. A Radio Shack announcer describes an inordinate amount of radio variations and Woolworth shows children playing with toys. Santa sleds on a Norelco razor top while a woman looks through her Hallmark cards and blushes at the one ‘the hunk' sent her. A grandpa helps his grandson fall asleep via phone and AT&T's great service. The Muppets unexpectedly show up with Polaroids as well.
