In the screening room Angus has discovered a revealing interview given by Marjorie M. Liu as she was wrapping up her run on Astonishing X-Men. During the 2013 Melbourne Writers Festival, she came to the Wheeler Centre for an exclusive video-only interview with Joe Morris (host of the NonCanonical comics podcast). She discusses the thrills, challenges and romance of writing; the transition from her erstwhile career as a lawyer; navigating the gendered genres of romance and comics; going off the deep end with your fiction; and the value of revising your work. Entertainment Weekly praised MONSTRESS as "one of Image Comics' most imaginative and daring new series" and dubbed it the "Best New Original Series" in their year-end "Best Comics of 2015" list. Comics Cowboy Troy takes over the airwaves for Western Comics Month on Kirby's Kids to review the interview by Del Howison of Joe R. Lansdale on HWA Day at the 2012 World Horror Convention in Salt Lake City. Joe reveals how comics taught him how to read and developed his love of the medium and lead to not only his love of reading but his chosen profession as an author and storyteller. It is an outstanding reveal and provides fantastic context for our graphic novel of the month read Jonah Hex: Shadows West. Diamond Comic Distributors catches Patrick’s ire one last time for the year. Some customers only see what they want to see. Some stores got next week’s book’s last Monday. We still don’t have them. Specifically nerdy Christmas gifts we received. With almost nothing new on the shelves the week of Christmas, people are finding some older comics, and that’s neat. Keep Reading Comics n 2019!! At the start of 2018, we tried to plan more experiences than signing. That did not work. Lucy Knisley returns to Challengers in March! As does Women’s Comics Month.
Those 6 days of Christmas sales were nice. Not as good as 2016, but still nice. We got some real nice 5-star reviews recently, and a head-scratching 1-star. Getting people to leave their homes for entertainment is hard to do. How do we get comic reviews to be as sales-boosting as game reviews? Patrick writes a comics commercial on the spot. Women’s Comics Month 2018 is shaping up to be great with 14 participants already scheduled. We have a great guest coming in for Free Comic Book Day in May, but we won’t tell you who just yet. Making sure subscribers don’t miss crossovers. It’s been over 4 weeks since we put Holiday cards in subscribers’ files. The number that have not been picked up seems to be high. What are we excited for in 2018? You should check out BOOM! Studios’ JUDAS #1.
This is the final Women’s Comics Month interview episode, featuring a full-length interview with Isabella Rotman. Her art is usually about the ocean, mermaids, crushing loneliness, people in the woods, or sex. She is author of the sexual health comic You're So Sexy When You Aren't Transmitting STIs, Not On My Watch: The Bystanders Handbook for the Prevention of Sexual Violence, Good to Know: A Zine of Useful Things, and many more.
This episode is the last in a series of mini-interviews with the creators that set up for Women’s Comics Month 2017 at Challengers. Featuring: Kat Leyh Amy Peltz Sheika Lugtu Stephanie Mided Sage Coffey Vixtopher Yewon Kwon & Bec Hac Cathy Hannah Corinne Halbert Delia Jean Coco Picard
New reusable tote bags. Large poster re-stock. Pop vinyl re-stock. Large all-ages graphic novel re-stock. Sale t-shirts are in. A whole bunch of new local comics and zines (thanks to Women’s Comics Month). We’re trying to put every penny back into the sore. The Challengiraffe prototype has been made by DoomCo Designs. We’ll actually have these fun 3D-printed statues available by Free Comic Book Day! Marvel’s “Generations” and Secret Empire #0. Dal has a BIG idea for changing how we rack single issue comic books. It’s different than we’ve ever done. Can we do it? Event recap!
It’s a special mid-week bonus episode as Patrick interviews artist Ashley Riot. What started as a Women’s Comics Month interview turned into a full episode! Ashley tells about growing up as the only anime/manga fan she knew and what it’s like to find other people and places of similar interests. Already a convention pro, Ashley delights in seeing young girls reading comics and loves giving drawing advice to kids and anyone with the desire to draw. Ashley’s original work includes an upcoming book called Psyche. Lots of talk of Sailor Moon, Ghost in the Shell, Doctor Who, The IT Crowd, and our deep, deep mutual love of Richard Ayoade.
This episode is a series of mini-interviews with the creators that set up for the first half of Women’s Comics Month 2017 at Challengers. Chloë Perkis Bianca Xunise Lauren Burke & Monica Ras Amber Huff Rosie Accola Sara Kloskowski Marie Enger Andrea Bell Rebecca Rothschild
NOT RECORDED IN A MOVING VEHICLE! You’re welcome. There’s a bunch of Marvel things to talk about: Legacy numbering, movie/TV advertising and geo-targeted character interaction, yet another new X-Men team book. We like SOME of this. We are 1 week into Women’s Comics Month. How is it going? 1st quarter 2017 sales are down 10% thus far. The number of brand new titles coming out in May is staggering. Will Patrick be on a Diamond Retailer Summit panel? We had a C2E2 scavenger hunt at the store. Having an actual, mailing address mailing list; not emails. Our business neighbor is now a Cards for Cash store. Read Grass Roots #1 (and Gwenpool, for Dal).
This week Roland and I go at it for a third time during Comics Month. Comment here or check out our Facebook page and let us know who was victorious there!
This week I continue to duke it out with Roland for Comics Month! This episode was a tough one for me, listen and find out just why!
