Up, up, and away! In this episode of Cracktastic Plastic, we're stepping away from the toy shelves and heading to the big screen to review the brand-new Superman movie. Is it a triumphant return to form for the Man of Steel, or just another cape in the crowd? We'll break down the action, the casting, the callbacks, and whether or not Supes finally gets the respect he deserves. To help us bring the geek in full force, we're reuniting with two of our favorite supernerds—Chris "Turnip" Simmons and "Insane Mike" Saunders! They've joined us before, and now they're back to truth-and-justice the heck out of this episode. Then we'll talk about Happy Sea Hawaii to see if we should go there someday! On this episode we begin with a scientific discussion, then Laban gives us an update on his dog. From there we get straight into the new James Gunn film SUPERMAN. We talk pretty extensively about it and get into spoiler territory. So watch the movie first. Or skip the movie and just listen to this episode. You can't tell from the recording but during this episode we had a four-way arm wrestling match going on the entire time. We had to cut it off before a winner was crowned because we all passed out at the exact same time and my wife had to call the ambulance. It was crazy but in the end we are stronger brothers for it and we got the ride in the ambulance together still clenched. The EMTs let us finish recording the episode which was sick and they had the siren blasting the whole ride Email us thegoodbrothersshow@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram & Facebook @thegoodbrothersshow
For well over a decade, we have argued about the quality of the Superman films. The fights about Supes killing Zod in Man of Steel has literally been one of the defining qualities of a couple of us on this show. When another new Superman movie was announced, and it was to be directed by James Gunn, we were torn between optimist and cynicism. Gunn has certainly been a divisive director in the past, but would he continue that trend? Anyway…here is our Superman (2025) episode.
Hey it's the summer of Superman, so let's look back at the comic book exploits of the big blue boy scout, share some Supes memories, and explore the origins of his encounters with the caped crusader. And maybe we'll find some time to talk about toys and maybe have a snack! Part two is coming soon, where we'll take a stroll down memory lane with all the various incarnations of Superman on the big and small screen! And sometimes still find a way to talk about Batman.
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... the new Superman! This week on Cocktails & Classics, Ben is soaring high after seeing his most anticipated film of the year, "Superman," from visionary director James Gunn. Join us as we explore our expectations and reactions of this fresh take on the Man of Steel, starring David Corenswet. We'll dive into the significance of a new cinematic Superman, discuss the exciting cast, and speculate on how this film will redefine the DC Universe. Don't miss this heroic episode, fueled by cocktails and soaring discussions! The Dawn of a New DC Era: Discuss the significance of this film as the first under James Gunn's DC Studios, our excitement for the direction he is taking the studio, and what it means for the future of the DC Universe and beloved characters.James Gunn's Vision: With one of the most unique filmographies, Gunn's directorial style, sense of humor, and storytelling approach is what makes him stand out in the superhero genre. Is that a positive or a negative when it comes to one of the most popular superheroes, Superman. Is David the best Superman?: We take a look at David Corensweat's role as Clark Kent/Superman and how his portrayal lives up to other recent Supes. The Supporting Cast: We discuss how Gunn's team's casting choices shine from the stars down to the secondary characters. Superman's Enduring Legacy: Revisit why Superman remains such an iconic and relevant character in pop culture, and why this Superman's emphasis on kindness, what it means to be human, and saving those around him are so important in today's current political climate.Have you had the chance to see Superman yet? James Gunn's new SUPERMAN begins from the assumption that audiences already have a working knowledge of the Man of Steel's origin story, his super-skill set, and his romance with Lois Lane. Gunn's film benefits greatly from being able to skip past the basics, but it wouldn't have been possible without Richard Donner's franchise-launching blockbuster SUPERMAN, which codified those basics for the big screen. So this week we're spinning the planet backwards to 1978 and revisiting filmgoers' first introduction to The Last Son Of Krypton — who we don't properly meet until nearly an hour in because, as it turns out, there are about four different movies tucked inside SUPERMAN. We're joined by writer, podcaster, and Supes superfan Chris Klimek to discuss how it all holds together from a modern perspective, and whether Christopher Reeve's definitive performance is enough to overcome all the film's flaws, or just most of them. Then in Feedback, the SINNERS conversation lives on, with a listener detailing its many connections to another film that we considered for that pairing. Please share your thoughts about either and all versions of SUPERMAN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. “I'm not messing around. I'm doing important stuff.” We watched “Superman” (2025) with our friend and resident Supes expert, Billy Roach, and we welcome our newest Kryptonian overlord. In a growing list of Supermen, David Corenswet has proven himself to be quite possibly the dorkiest entry, and gosh darn it, it's so endearing! We're not going to waste too much time answering the trolls' review bombing this movie - instead, we're going to celebrate what we liked about it. Not the least of which is the chemistry between the leads - Corenswet's Superman and, yes, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. Okay, Rachel Brosnahan is doing some fine work as well, but we're really digging Nicky and Corny's performances as these iconic characters. It's gotta be tough to bring anything new to Superman and Lex Luthor after so many iterations, but these two brought it - and let's be honest, they're not too tough to look at either. Nicky's baby blues are worth the price of admission! We don't forget about this press tour, in which our two boys are publicizing their aforementioned chemistry and landing the crucial disposable income of the gay male moviegoing audience. Cautiously excited to see Superman (2025), we decided to check out part of the extended Supes cinematic universe with a film built around his cousin, Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl. Not the worst superhero movie we've seen, but maybe one of the creepiest, what with all the adults making out with high school girls. Starring Faye Dunaway, Helen Slater, Peter O'Toole, Brenda Vaccaro and Peter Cook. Written by David Odell. Directed by Jeannot Szwarc.
The James Gunn Era of the new DCU kicks off with Superman, and Earth's Mightiest Critics have a lot to say about it!David Corenswet stars as the latest big-screen incarnation of the Man of Steel in this wacky, rebooted-but-already-established universe. Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is out to destroy Superman's public image so that he can hatch a nefarious plan involving geopolitical war. Throw in the misfit Justice Gang, Metropolis-munching Kaiju, pocket universes, Internet trolls, and a bizarre twist on Supes' origin story, and you have one of the boldest relaunches in cinema history. But "bold" doesn't necessarily mean "good". And in this week's pugnacious panel, the EMC will duke it out over whether or not Gunn has laid a promising path for future DCU films--or if Superman signals the death knell of not only a franchise, but an entire genre!Join us for a super-scrappy and spoilerific roundtable review of one of summer's most highly anticipated (and divisive) blockbusters!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Superman (2025) trailer.ICYMI: Watch Ian's Superman 2025 Public Service Announcement, including his thoughts on the DCU moving forward! As teased in the show, Ian interviewed Rachel Brosnahan a few years ago, during her Marvelous Mrs. Maisel days. Real Life This week, Steven finally found a superhero movie that didn't make him want to throw his popcorn at the screen. Superman (2025) has arrived, and according to him, it's the best take we've had on the character in years. No origin story nonsense, just straight into Supes doing good and being good. James Gunn gets it—Superman is an immigrant, a boy scout, and a damn firefighter (not a cop). The moral core is there, the cape looks good, and apparently, if you hate it, it's because it's “woke”? Whatever. Steven liked it. You probably will too. Meanwhile, Devon has been dodging storms, not floods. He lives far from the Texas chaos but has had his fair share of wet weekends. That hasn't stopped him from grinding away at backyard renovations. Fake grass is coming soon. In the process, he's tearing out ivy and ground brush—bad news for copperhead snakes, which are venomous, and good news for anyone walking around barefoot. Speaking of venom: Ben brings us the delightful fact that some birds are venomous. No, really. There are birds that store toxins from insects and plants and use them to defend themselves. The pitohui says hi. Nature is weird. More bird venom facts here. Devon also dove into evolution this week, thanks to a Hank Green video about the great leap from water to land. Turns out the hardest problem evolution ever solved might just be how to turn gilled swimmers into four-limbed land mammals. Spoiler alert: it involves lungs, fins, and a lot of time. Watch the video here. Ben, when not thinking about venomous birds, asked an important question: What do people do for fun in Palmdale? The answer, apparently, is “hang out near electrical poles.” He also recommends the board game The Red Dragon Inn for those nights when you're too tired to fight dragons and just want to drink with them instead. Game info here. Future or Now Only Steven showed up for this segment, and he brought ancient lion maulings. A new article from ScienceDaily describes a skeleton found in a Roman cemetery in York—with bite marks matching a lion's jaw. It's our first archaeological evidence of gladiator-style combat between a human and a lion, which is equal parts horrifying and fascinating. Steven points out that if curses were real, this would be prime material—digging up gladiator graves seems like an express ticket to ghost lion attacks. Book Club This week, we read The Last Question by Isaac Asimov, a story about entropy, immortality, the heat death of the universe, and one computer's ongoing existential crisis. Devon raises a solid point: the story's final punch line hits different if you grew up with the Judeo-Christian idea of divine creation. If not? It still works, but maybe not quite the same way. You could easily sub in other creation myths—or just throw in some Terminators and call it a sci-fi remix. Ben had Siri read him the story aloud via Mobile Safari and recommends the experience. Read it here or watch this animated version. Next week: There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury, a classic tale of loneliness, technology, and automatic breakfast machines still flipping eggs long after humanity is gone. You can read the story here or listen to a reading. Oh, and if you missed it, Captain Kirk is coming back—sort of. He's being resurrected for Star Trek: The Last Starship, a new comic set in the far future. We have thoughts. Mostly confused ones.

And of course, there are those numerous reaction videos (Some longer than the filmsthey're reacting to.) With all that said, if you really want the scoopon Marvel/Disney's new Daredevil offering or James Gunn's new Superman film, all you have to do is join James and Joe (Your Mint Men ofMessaging) to deliver the low-down on what's hurtling your way fromthe vast genre-verse. In this current "back of the store chat", the boys run the gamutfrom" Supes" to "nuts" (Diamond Comic Distributors) as they review, report, and reconcile some the important issues of the day that aremaking the rounds in the pop culture universe. Will Spider-Man pop up in Daredevil Born Again? Will James Gunnstraighten out Kal-El's stigmatism in post-production? How will thefall of Diamond Comic Distributors affect your local LCS? Have youheard of Dogman, and why is it eating Marvel and DC's lunch? And hasJoe traded in his maniacal obsession for the inept Nets of the NBA fora lunatic lashing of the NFL? He might be off his meds again. You can't swing an Omnibus (and if you can, more power to you)without hitting a plethora of topics covered in this episode. As we'vestated once or twice before, bring a score when you come through theback door for this segment. If for no other reason, you might want toshow it to an NFL ref or umpire that you're watching them. Let it goJoe. MLB Spring Training has started!

We Watched So Much Stuff This Week This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review… Gladiator II, Transformers One, the penultimate Supes & Lolo, and the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Gladiator 2: 4:28 Transformers: One: 17:54 Supes & Lolo: 30:35 Dunc: Prophecy: 44:25 Gladiator 2 (2024) Out of 10 Lucius Was Not A Treat Clarks Darryl: 6/10 Brian: 8.2/10 Summary “Gladiator II,” directed by Ridley Scott, is a 2024 epic historical action film that serves as a sequel to the 2000 classic “Gladiator.” The story is set 16 years after the original, focusing on Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius and Lucilla. Living under the alias “Hanno” in Numidia, Lucius's life is shattered when General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) leads a Roman invasion that results in the death of his wife and his enslavement. Forced into the gladiatorial arena, Lucius seeks vengeance against Acacius and the corrupt twin emperors, Geta and Caracalla. He gains the mentorship of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave and ambitious arms dealer with his own designs on power. As Lucius rises through the ranks of gladiators, he discovers his true heritage and confronts the political machinations of Rome, mirroring the journey of his father, Maximus. The film features intense combat sequences, including battles against exotic animals like rhinos and sharks, and delves into themes of revenge, identity, and the quest for justice. While it expands on the original's narrative, some critics note that it lacks the emotional depth of its predecessor. Nonetheless, “Gladiator II” offers a visually spectacular experience with strong performances, particularly from Washington, who brings a compelling presence to the role of Macrinus. “Gladiator II” was released in theaters on November 22, 2024, and has received generally positive reviews from critics. Transformers One (2024) Out of 10 I’d Want to Kill Orion Pax Toos Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 6.4/10 Summary “Transformers One” is a 2024 American animated science fiction action film that explores the origins of the iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax (who becomes Optimus Prime) and Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 (who becomes Megatron). Set on the planet Cybertron, the narrative delves into the early relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, who start as close friends bonded like brothers. As the story unfolds, their differing ideologies lead to a rift, setting the stage for the epic conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. The film also introduces other key characters, such as Elita-1 (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and B-127 (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), providing a rich backstory to the Transformers universe. “Transformers One” premiered in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, and was released in the United States on September 20, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its storytelling, animation, and voice performances. However, it underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately $128.9 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $75 million and $147 million. For those interested in watching the film, “Transformers One” is available for streaming on Paramount+. Superman and Lois (The CW) Out of 5 Never Trust a Human Hearts Darryl: 4.45/5 Brian: 4.35/5 Summary In the penultimate episode of “Superman & Lois,” titled “To Live and Die Again,” the series sets the stage for a climactic finale. The episode features the return of Doomsday, now portrayed in a highly comic-accurate form, intensifying the threat to Superman and his family. The narrative delves into the aftermath of Superman's public revelation of his dual identity as Clark Kent, exploring the personal and societal ramifications of this disclosure. Additionally, Lois Lane receives a positive update regarding her battle with breast cancer, marking a significant moment in her character arc. The episode culminates in an emotional cliffhanger, setting up a high-stakes confrontation in the series finale. This installment effectively balances action and character development, paving the way for a compelling conclusion to the series. Dune: Prophecy (HBO Max) Out of 10 Burn in My Lights Darryl: 7.75/10 Brian: 7.1/10 Summary “Dune: Prophecy” is a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's “Dune,” focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Here's a summary of the first two episodes: Episode 1: “The Hidden Hand” The series opens with Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson) leading the fledgling Sisterhood on Wallach IX. She entrusts Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) with the mission to expand and fortify the Sisterhood's influence. Valya, driven by her family's tarnished legacy, employs the Sisterhood's secretive breeding program and mental conditioning to manipulate political dynamics across the Imperium. A significant plot involves the arranged marriage between Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and young noble Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior), orchestrated to stabilize the Imperial bloodline. However, the emergence of Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a mysterious soldier with newfound powers from Arrakis, disrupts these plans. Desmond's actions culminate in the simultaneous deaths of Pruwet and Imperial Truthsayer Kasha Jinjo (Jihae), signaling a formidable threat to the Sisterhood's schemes. Episode 2: “Two Wolves” In the aftermath of the dual assassinations, Valya seeks to counter Desmond's menace. She travels to Salusa Secundus to interrogate Desmond, who openly admits to the killings, revealing his immunity to the Sisterhood's manipulative techniques like “The Voice.” Meanwhile, on Wallach IX, young acolyte Lila undergoes “The Agony,” a perilous ritual intended to unlock ancestral memories. During this process, Lila encounters the spirit of Raquella, who imparts cryptic warnings about impending dangers. The episode delves into the internal dynamics of the Sisterhood, highlighting the challenges Valya faces in consolidating power amid external threats and internal dissent. These episodes lay the groundwork for a complex narrative of political intrigue, mystical traditions, and the struggle for dominance within the Imperium.
