Marvel Studios assembles (very slowly over several hours) the full cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday, meanwhile Nintendo has one final bittersweet Direct event for the original Switch. Also...is there actually a lot of demand for more Star Wars: The Acolyte? Streaming analytics data may surprise you. Also, another good actor signs on to the (likely not very good) Harry Potter television series, and Diamond Comic Distributors' assets and contracts have been bought by another company who may or may not know what a so-called 'comic book' actually is. All this and more, including a couple of really bad impressions!
In the latest episode, The Fanbase Weekly co-hosts welcome special guests Mark London (founder/CEO/COO, Mad Cave Studios) and Amie Wright (Executive Director, Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Past President, ALA's Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table) to discuss the latest geek news stories of the week, including whether Image Comics President Todd McFarlane will buy Diamond Comic Distributors, reactions to the reveal of Mortal Kombat 2's Johnny Cage, and Absolute Joker's twist on Batman and the Joker.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoOnce upon a time you had to go to the movies to see the trailers forupcoming films. Now all you gotta do is grab your favorite hand-helddevice and ask Google or Siri to call it up for you. And of course, there are those numerous reaction videos (Some longer than the filmsthey're reacting to.) With all that said, if you really want the scoopon Marvel/Disney's new Daredevil offering or James Gunn's new Superman film, all you have to do is join James and Joe (Your Mint Men ofMessaging) to deliver the low-down on what's hurtling your way fromthe vast genre-verse. In this current "back of the store chat", the boys run the gamutfrom" Supes" to "nuts" (Diamond Comic Distributors) as they review, report, and reconcile some the important issues of the day that aremaking the rounds in the pop culture universe. Will Spider-Man pop up in Daredevil Born Again? Will James Gunnstraighten out Kal-El's stigmatism in post-production? How will thefall of Diamond Comic Distributors affect your local LCS? Have youheard of Dogman, and why is it eating Marvel and DC's lunch? And hasJoe traded in his maniacal obsession for the inept Nets of the NBA fora lunatic lashing of the NFL? He might be off his meds again. You can't swing an Omnibus (and if you can, more power to you)without hitting a plethora of topics covered in this episode. As we'vestated once or twice before, bring a score when you come through theback door for this segment. If for no other reason, you might want toshow it to an NFL ref or umpire that you're watching them. Let it goJoe. MLB Spring Training has started!

Show notes: Of course on the day I posted my last episode the news broke about Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. filing a Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy, and TikTok went dark just before I could finish this episode. Earlier this week I sat down with my business major and comics fangirl wife Nicki to talk about how this all could affect the comics industry in both negative and positive ways. We speculate on the possible upcoming imposed tariffs from the incoming administration and what that might mean for the printing industry- especially those that do self-publishing and/or Kickstarter campaigns for comics and books. Just how could it affect the already inflated price of comics..?! We also discuss my days of self-publishing and dealings with Diamond, as well as news about new Barnes & Noble brick & mortar stores coming, and what is #BookTok and how it is used by book fans and retailers. We exercise our First Amendment Rights quite a bit and express our opinions on how the upcoming TikTok ban (or sale) can/will affect book sales and other businesses- especially smaller businesses and content creators. I also yell at my cat Lex for being a jerk...it happens. The news was constantly changing for Diamond and TikTok as I was editing and publishing this episode. I don't have a lot of faith in our government, foreign governments, social media companies, or corporations in general to do the right thing, but and all we can do right now is wait and see how it all plays out. 2025 is definitely going to be some concerning times for comics creators, publishers, distributors, retailers, and us fans. “Stay tooned!” (and read a book!) Free Comic Book Day is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to attract new readers to independent comic book stores. It usually takes place on the first Saturday of May and is often cross-promoted with the release of a superhero film. Over two thousand participating stores give away millions of comic books annually. The event was proposed by Joe Field in the August 2001 issue of Comics & Games Retailer magazine and Free Comic Book Day was launched in 2002, coordinated by the industry's single large distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. FCBD has become an official Children's Book Week event and has inspired similar events for German- and Dutch-language comics industries. The twenty-first edition of FCBD was held on May 6, 2023. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

About Mark London and Mad Cave Studios: I grew up addicted to movies and comic books. If you want to talk about, fantasy, storytelling, Conan, Transformers, GI Joe, or Japanese Animation, I'm your man. Perhaps it's the filmography of Jean Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Sylvester Stallone. As a kid, I loved it. As an adult, I still love it. I've channeled that passion into my independent comic book publishing company, Mad Cave Studios, which I established in 2014. From the beginning of our studio's inception, I've reached for nothing short of the best in terms of artwork, storylines, and team members. That level of quality has shown in what we've produced and in the things we've achieved the last three years. We've exhibited at Wizard World's Chicago Convention (2016), New York Comic Con (2016, 2017), WonderCon Anaheim (2017), and Megacon Orlando (2017). Our medieval fantasy comic, Battlecats, will be distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors and was featured in their December 2017 edition of Previews World. Now we are working simultaneously on six comic book series as we release Battlecats, Midnight, and Knights of the Golden Sun throughout 2018. We have big plans for Mad Cave Studios in 2018 and beyond. Learn more about what we're doing by visiting madcavestudios.com or clicking on the links below. Established in 2014, Mad Cave Studios is an independent comic book publisher from Miami, Florida driven by madness and committed to creating the most fun and diverse comics on the market. With our roots founded in a medieval fantasy world, every Mad Cave series is incepted by us before it is filtered through the feedback of our readers. We attend multiple conventions each year to talk with our fans and learn what they are excited about. The result is a comic book experience that is second to none, transporting our readers to a world that comes to life with beautiful artwork and a story that carries a hidden, purposeful meaning. Every single person hired by Mad Cave Studios carries a passion for the industry. Our writers, editors, artists, graphic designers, marketers, and PR/Communications professionals are all dedicated to this work.

In the latest episode of 'Too Hot For TV' Dylan and Jack encounter a time traveling voodoo cult and unconvincing fish people. First up it's Big Finish Companion Chronicle 'Peri and the Piscon Paradox' written by Nev Fountain, read by Nicola Bryant and staring Colin Baker. Then it's the only 2 issues of the Faction Paradox comic by Lawrence Miles from Mad Norwegian Press and Image comics.
In this episode, the guys chat about comics and superheroes. Marvel - and comics in general - hit the skids when they tried to oversell their product and lost sight of their fan base. But it was their creativity that saved them in the end. Both Nico and Chad take a trip down memory lane as they “dust off” some of their favorite comics from way back when. The company that eventually became Marvel was originally created in 1939 by Martin Goodman - and was originally called “Timeless Comics.” In 1961 the company was rebranded as Marvel - and launched the first titles that Marvel would eventually become known for, including The Fantastic Four and other titles by the legendary names behind Marvel - Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In the 1960s through 1980s, Marvel Comics consistently grew, mostly due to their amazing art and storytelling. Marvel was among the most respected comic book franchises. Through the late 80s and into the early 1990s, Marvel's success hit a peak, attracting the attention of people in the “mainstream.” It was during this time that millionaire Ron Perelman (who'd had huge success at Revlon) bought Marvel Entertainment Group for $82.5MM - he took Marvel public. Writer Neil Gaiman gave a speech to 3000 comics industry leaders at the 1993 Diamond Comic Distributors 10th Annual Retailers Seminar where he prophesied doom to come. Gaiman said the success of comics couldn't last, and that the practices of continually driving prices up were not only hurting the quality of comic writing and production… that it would eventually come back to bite the industry economically. The year wasn't even out before Gaiman's prophecy started to come true. Higher prices and more and more issues to collect couldn't last forever. Collectors started to get fatigued…realizing that not every release could be worth investing in...and the flood of collectables started to de-value the entire market. Desperate for a way to pull Marvel out of the dumps of debt, Perelman launched Marvel Studios. He wanted to get their signature characters on screen, but there were licensing deals in the way. He planned to grow the company by further acquisitions so he could buy back the licensing for key characters, but the board - Marvel's shareholders - weren't so sure. So Perelman tried to go around them. He filed bankruptcy - which gave him the power to reorganize without their consent. But they didn't go down easy. They hired turnaround expert Peter Cuneo - verteran of successful turnarounds. Cuneo believed cutting corners on talent had led to Marvel's troubles in the 90s and he refused to repeat the mistake. Listen to Cuneo talk about business turnarounds here. In 2005 Marvel took a huge risk, they approached Merrill Lynch for funding. And as collateral for the loan they offered up: The core of their business…and essentially they've never looked back. The guys end off the show by discussing lessons to be learned from this incredible comeback, one of them being that “great companies don't only make products, they build ecosystems”. At the end of the day every company that is successful, is successful because of its people. Enjoy the show! The effect of COVID-19 on the comic book industry is wide and varied which Chris and Hector explore in this episode. Marvel Comics is pausing the distribution of new digital titles including putting new titles on pause for the time being. DC Comics is donating money to local comic shops and the biggest printer of comics, Diamond Comic Distributors, is closing their doors temporarily. All this and the top pulls from Chris, Hector, and our community on this episode of The Pull List podcast!
On Today's episode of the Pull List, we've got a great show for you! We're going to hit the latest news (Captain Marvel goes to the dark side?, Your Fav skull-faced hero Johnny Blaze is back, Diamond Comics distributors shakes things up, and much more!!). All that plus our pulls from the last two weeks.
Over the past three and a half years, the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics have interviewed a variety of artists, writers, editors, publishers, educators, and scholars, but in all this time they have not yet interviewed someone from the retail side of comics culture. Until now. In this episode, Derek talks with Christina Merkler, the co-owner of Discount Comic Book Service, one of the largest online retailers of comics (and, in the spirit of full disclosure, an official sponsor of The Comics Alternative). They begin their conversation with a little background history, Christina describing what it was like when her husband, Cameron, came up with the idea for the business and decided to start with an all-online shop. What began as a small Internet-driven service out of their home in 1999 eventually turned into a brick-and-mortar store, multiple online storefronts, and the growing multi-state operation that it has become today. Christina describes how now, with the DCBS remaining in Fort Wayne, IN, and the InStock Trades warehouse being in Memphis, TN, the Merklers feel like they're all over the place and constantly on the go. But they've no plans to rest on their achievements, and instead, are at work on future growth plans. Derek also asks Christina about the competition they've had over the years, the ins and outs of pricing, their relationship with Diamond Comic Distributors, their attempts at getting into the digital comics business, the decisions that go into their monthly specials, and their strategies for good customer relations. In all, his conversation with Christina is a revealing look at the store-front business side of the medium and the many details of how, literally, the books by the creators the guys discuss every week get into the hands of the readers. After listening to this interview, be sure to head on over to Discount Comic Book Service and InStock Trades. And when you do, please send them an email and tell them that the Two Guys with PhDs sent you!
