For this week's podcast, we're digging out a treasure from the CBCC Patreon Feed: our deep-dive conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson about The Nam # 9. This thorough discussion launched our "Married to Singles" Patreon exclusive series, where we examine the favorite single issues of various comic book creators and critics. It's one thing to dissect an artist's work alongside or in front of them, as we often do, but it's an entirely different thing to scrutinize an artist's work with another artist. Daniel Warren Johnson is a can't-miss cartoonist. If he's on a book, you want that book in your pullbox. Extremity, Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and Transformers are essential reads for those obsessed with the comic form. If you want to understand what DWJ does so well, our conversation with him about his passion for Michael Golden gives you another angle. As Johnson remarks in our chat, Michael Golden in The 'Nam # 9 does things he would never do, and those choices mystify and compel him. Johnson came to the Marvel series late in his comic reading history, picking up the first two issues and enjoying them but only coming across the rest of those Golden books years later at C2E2. He profoundly appreciates all those early 'Nam issues, but the ninth one just hits differently. Why? We get into it. After you enjoy our conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson, consider digging into the rest of our "Married to Singles" episodes. We have thorough inspections with Jason Ayers on Uncanny X-Men # 183, Christian Ward on Arkham Asylum, and more. The CBCC Patreon costs as little as $1 a month or $12 a year. You can also purchase these episodes individually, without joining the Patreon, for $3 an episode via our Online Shop. The 'Nam # 9 was originally published by Marvel Comics on May 19, 1987. It was written by Doug Murray, penciled by Michael Golden, inked by John Beatty, and lettered and colored by Phil Felix. G.I. Joe mastermind Larry Hama served as editor, while Jim Shooterwas Editor-in-Chief. You can continue this conversation by following Daniel Warren Johnson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Conflict and trauma remain among the most prevalent themes in film and literature. Comics has never avoided such narratives, and comics artists are writing them in ways that are both different from and complementary to literature and film. Harriet E. H. Earle brings together two distinct areas of research—trauma studies and comics studies—to provide a new interpretation of a long-standing theme. Focusing on representations of conflict in American comics after the Vietnam War, Earle claims that the comics form is uniquely able to show traumatic experience by representing events as viscerally as possible. Using texts from across the form and placing mainstream superhero comics alongside alternative and art comics, Earle suggests that comics are the ideal artistic representation of trauma. Because comics bridge the gap between the visual and the written, they represent such complicated narratives as loss and trauma in unique ways, particularly through the manipulation of time and experience. Comics can fold time and confront traumatic events, be they personal or shared, through a myriad of both literary and visual devices. As a result, comics can represent trauma in ways that are unavailable to other narrative and artistic forms. With themes such as dreams and mourning, Earle concentrates on trauma in American comics after the Vietnam War. Examples include Alissa Torres's American Widow, Doug Murray's The 'Nam, and Art Spiegelman's much-lauded Maus. These works pair with ideas from a wide range of thinkers, including Sigmund Freud, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Fredric Jameson, as well as contemporary trauma theory and clinical psychology. Through these examples and others, Comics, Trauma, and the New Art of War (UP of Mississippi, 2017) proves that comics open up new avenues to explore personal and public trauma in extraordinary, necessary ways. Dr. Harriet Earle is a senior lecturer in English at Sheffield Hallam University and a Research Fellow at the Centre for War, Atrocity, and Genocide at the University of Nipissing.  Elizabeth Allyn Woock an assistant professor in the Department of English and American Studies at Palacky University in the Czech Republic with an interdisciplinary background in history and popular literature. William Hoy ACE, Tyler Nelson, Will Files, Douglas Murray THE BATMAN post production team of editors Bill Hoy and Tyler Nelson, along with supervising sound editors Will Files and Doug Murray, are justifiably proud of the film they've made.  In breaking the mold of the superhero archetype, they achieved director Matt Reeves' vision of a noir murder mystery that's more in the vein of classis 70's cinema than the glossy blockbusters of the 21st century.  Adding to this feat is the fact that they were forced to shut down one month into production only to return to action in a much more restrictive model of collaboration than they were used to.  In spite of those challenges, audiences and critics alike have responded in a big way to the remarkably fresh take on DC Films' dark knight. The story of THE BATMAN begins two years into his crimefighting legacy, forgoing the usual origin story elements often found in super hero tales, and follows Batman / Bruce Wayne as he ventures into Gotham City's underworld where he must track a sadistic killer prone to leaving behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clearer, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the city. WILLIAM HOY ACE William Hoy is known for his work on NO WAY OUT (1987), DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990), THE BONE COLLECTOR (1999), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014) and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017). TYLER NELSON Tyler Nelson is known for his assistant editing work on THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010), THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011) and GONE GIRL (2014); as well as his editing work on MINDHUNTER (2017-2019) and SHADOW AND BONE (2021). WILL FILES Will Files is known for his work on CLOVERFIELD (2008), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017), STAR WARS:  EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS (2017) and VENOM (2018). DOUGLAS MURRAY Douglas Murray is known for his work on THE ENGLISH PATIENT (1996), CLOVERFIELD (2008), DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017) and ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (2018). In this episode we're off to Penang, the fabled island off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Colonised by the British in the early 1700s, Penang today is one of Malaysia's most ethnically diverse and cosmopolitan regions, a dynamic business hub as well as a repository of local cultural history. Its capital George Town is known for its Unesco World Heritage listed zone, but there is much more to discover on the island - as you'll find out in this episode's love letter, narrated by local journalist Marco Ferrarese, who leads us on a two-day hike from the north to the south of Penang via its mountainous, rainforest-clad interior. Penangite Alan Tan, managing director of Habitat Penang Hill, shines a light on the island's lush environment and its complex, fascinating mingling of cultures. Rounding out the episode is Bettina Chua Abdullah, a local broadcaster, writer and passionate foodie, who waxes lyrical about Penang's lip-smacking culinary scene, one of the best in Asia. Bettina is also director of Hikayat, bookshop and events space in George Town. But much more was given back: by Douglas Murray’s generous defence, by the friends who rallied behind him, by the rheumatologist who saved my life and by the doctor to whose care I am now entrusted. Falling to the bottom in my own country, I have been raised to the top elsewhere, and looking back over the sequence of events I can only be glad that I have lived long enough to see this happen. I really dug getting to play with Clive Barker's creations and had even written a tie in comic detailing the origins of the lament configurations (the deadly puzzle boxes) and further three stories which never saw print because the series was cancelled before they could be run. I'd love to be able to return to Hellraiser some day. From   The first of the stories I wrote for this series, "Homecoming," was also the first narrative comic book story I wrote for publication. I worked really hard to make it tight, seamless, and brutal, only to see something published which represented the story I turned in only in the most superficial level, completely removing the brutal ending and replacing it with one of redemption and responsibility. The Cenobite in my story, was really a cenobite pet, who escapes hell, and his masters, and heads home to the family he left on earth decades ago. This pet was taken to hell as a child, because his older brother sacrificed him to the Cenobites rather than go himself, as was supposed to happen. When the cenobites come to retrieve their pet, they demand to take the older brother back as well for their trouble. In my version the older brother surrenders his young son instead, remaining a coward and never taking responsibility for his actions. In the altered version, he owns up for what he has done and goes along himself. I was pissed, and disowned the story after this, despite some lovely art by Mark Texiera. I later wondered if maybe my script, being my first was bad and required the changes, but having found it in my files years later, so that it still held up, and remains stronger than what saw print. My next story fared a lot better, though I had to fight for it. From Gray Morrow died of a self inflicted gunshot. He suffered from Parkinson's disease.Morrow was nominated for the Hugo Award for best professional artist in 1966,[30] 1967,[31] and 1968. Episode Description You have likely had someone pitch or discuss with you the idea of introducing financial wellness to your employee population, or if you haven’t, the conversation is undoubtedly coming soon!  In this episode we tackle the not so simple questions of what is financial wellness, how do we know if someone is financially healthy and is Financial Wellness here to stay or is this another passing fad in the benefits arena.  To help explore the topic I have Doug Murray, EVP and Mary Hollingsworth, SVP and Director of Product Strategy at Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement. A few key points to listen for are who should be defining what financial wellness means, employers or their service providers, the motivations around introducing financial wellness to your workforce and how to set goals and measure outcomes for a financial wellness offering. An interesting point that we discuss and one to ponder, if you shift your focus to promoting more holistic financial wellness within your workforce, are you okay that the message some of your employees could get is that it doesn’t make sense for them to participate in your 401(k) plan right now?  Love to hear your feedback on that, send me an email at info@401kfridays.com.  If you’re not subscribed to our email list already, go to www.401kfridays.com/subscribe, going forward we’ll be notifying our email subscribers of future podcast guests and you will have the exclusive opportunity to submit topics or questions for me to address with them on the show!  Guest Bios Doug Murray is part of the senior leadership team for Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust. In this role, he is actively involved in setting overall strategic direction for the group. As the national director of institutional sales, Doug leads distribution efforts across all products and market segments. Doug has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with majors in finance and risk/insurance. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Institute. Doug is active in the retirement industry and in his community. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and on the Board of Directors at Partnership Resources, Inc., a local nonprofit organization. Doug is also a member of Wells Fargo’s Minnesota Leadership Council.  Doug lives in Minneapolis, MN with his wife Karen and teenage children Madison and Ian. His interests include traveling with his family, golf, and cooking. Mary Hollingsworth is the director of Product Strategy and Positioning for Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust.
