Hosts Dave Bossert and Aljon Go review Disney's Jungle Book live-action film, Marvel Studios vs Scarlett Johansson, and chat with Rob Camp, animator, writer, cartoonist, comic book artist, storyboard artist, director, and producer. Camp has been nominated for two Emmys, a CableACE Award, and an Annie Award for his work on The Ren & Stimpy Show. Camp started his animation career as a designer for animated series such as ThunderCats, Silverhawks, TigerSharks, and several other series produced by Rankin/Bass. He then worked as a designer on The Real Ghostbusters for DiC, and later as a storyboard artist on Tiny Toon Adventures for Warner Bros. Television. Camp was a co-founder of and director for Spümcø, the animation studio that created The Ren & Stimpy Show. He played a major role in the studio's creative force until September 21, 1992, when he left to work for Games Productions (a.k.a. Games Animation). At Games, Camp was promoted to creative director of The Ren and Stimpy show and supervised work on the episodes made. After Ren & Stimpy ended in 1995, Camp and former Ren & Stimpy writer Jim Gomez began developing a new series for Nickelodeon titled Kid Komet and Galaxy Gal, which was never picked up for a full series. In the 1980s, Camp worked at Marvel Comics as an illustrator on many comic titles including G.I. Joe, Crazy Magazine, Bizarre Adventures, Savage Tales, Conan the Barbarian, and The 'Nam. In the 2000s, Camp worked as a storyboard artist on animated feature films such as Looney Tunes: Back in Action and Ice Age: The Meltdown. Camp also taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.* Follow Bob at Boblab Studios (boblabshop.com) | BobLab Studios | Facebook. This week's Tale introduces us to another of Robert E. Howard's foundational epic fantasy characters, Solomon Kane.  This is still a world of sword and sorcery but, arguably, a world closer to our own.  As you'd expect from the creator of Conan, Kane is brooding, lone, and violent, but he has, perhaps, more of a mission in mind than Howard's later hero.  But is his need to rid the world of monsters all that drives him?If you'd like to support The Well Told Tale, please visit us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thewelltoldtaleBooks - (buying anything on Amazon through this link helps support the podcast):The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane - https://amzn.to/3bRSXoH The Chronicles of Solomon Kane (graphic novel) - https://amzn.to/3bUaPj5Conan: The Barbarian - Complete Collection - https://amzn.to/341JWWZFilmsSolomon Kane - https://amzn.to/3bWBdITConan the Barbarian (1982) - https://amzn.to/3nMl2lL  I would like to thank my patrons: Toni A, Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, Drew Atkins, John Bowles, Glen Thrasher and Cade Norman.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thewelltoldtale)

In Savage Tales: The Writings of Paul Gauguin (Yale University Press, 2019), Linda Goddard investigates the role that Paul Gauguin’s writings played in his artistic practice and in his negotiation of his colonial identity. As a French artist who lived in Polynesia, Gauguin occupies a crucial position in histories of European primitivism, but this is the first book to be devoted to his wide-ranging literary output, including his journalism, travel writing, art criticism, and essays on aesthetics, religion, and politics. In the book, Dr. Goddard analyzes what are often richly illustrated manuscripts and she counters the tendency to interpret these writings merely as a source of information about his life. Instead, she reveals how the seemingly haphazard structure of Gauguin’s manuscripts were an important part of an artistic practice that ranged across media, one that enabled him to evoke the “primitive” culture that he so celebrated. This critical analysis of his writings significantly enriches our understanding of the complexities of artistic encounters in the French colonial context. Linda Goddard is senior lecturer in art history at the University of St. Andrews. Allison Leigh is Assistant Professor of Art History and the SLEMCO/LEQSF Regents Endowed Professor in Art & Architecture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Her research explores European and Russian art of the eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the 1970s, in an effort to diversify its line, Marvel began adapting Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories. To push (at least a little bit) beyond what the Comics Code would allow, some of these stories were published in magazine format, as Savage Tales. The second and third issues of this series featured … Continue reading #624 “Conan: Red Nails”

Interview with Kenneth Hite at GenCon 2007 0:37 - I sat down with frequent guest Kenneth Hite at GenCon to talk about what we saw at the show that excited us. 1:26 - This show is a member of the Goblin Broadcast Network. 1:33 - Ken and I weren't able to do this at GenCon last year, as he was at Ropecon in Finland. He's glad to be back. 3:34 - Both of us were tremendously impressed by Jason Morningstar's Grey Ranks, a game about the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. 6:12 - Ken got a glimpse at Julia Ellingboe's Steal Away Jordan, a game about slavery in the antebellum American South. I had the opportunity to play in a demo of it, and it deeply affected me as well. 10:13 - I tried to pick up The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane from Pinnacle, but it was sold out. 11:50 - Neither of us have a had chance to read Monte Cook's World of Darkness or Changeling: The Lost from White Wolf, but they look great. 12:49 - Both of us have had a chance to look at Blossoms Are Falling, the newest supplement Burning Wheel supplement, covering Heian-era Japan. 13:47 - We talk about the Ashcan Front, using Paul Czege's Acts of Evil as an example. 16:09 - Oh yeah, and Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition was announced, but we don't know that much specific about it. That doesn't stop us from speculating. 20:33 - Edited by James Lowder, Hobby Games: The 100 Best is a great collection of essays by one hundred game designers about their favorite games. We recommend it, and not just because Ken is one of those hundred. 23:58 - Both us were jazzed by different parts of Post-Apocalyptic Hero, the latest Hero System genre book. 24:36 - In the quick hits segment we talk about the Pirate's Guide to Freeport, Dirty Secrets, The Committee for the Exploration of Mysteries, and Blood and Bronze. 27:23 True to form, Ken manages a seamless segue to talk about the forthcoming Trail of Cthulhu before we go. 28:42 - Don Dehm from the Parsec Award-winning Pulp Gamer podcast says hello. 28:48 - I'll be back next episode with my interview with Monte Cook for Inside the Game Designers Studio. --PaulDiscuss this episode in the HG,WT forum.
