Ode (@thatsod.e / @thatsod_e) and Mo "Kid" Licorish (@licorishislegit) welcome rock journalist and MP3s and NPCs founder Terrance Pryor for a conversation that traces his path from a college radio host at UCCR through booking tours and writing for NJ Underground and Examiner, all the way to launching his own outlet in June 2019 after years of frustration with industry access. Terrance recounts publicly calling out Metal Sucks and Metal Injection over how the metal press treats Black writers, and he describes being passed over for credentials in favor of comedians and Twitch streamers with large followings despite two decades of experience. He connects that fight to Cheryl Lee Ralph's Emmys red carpet remark about building a table when none is offered, the same instinct that led MP3s and NPCs to eventual distribution through Microsoft Start and Apple News. The conversation moves through fandom territory covering Bocchi the Rock, The Devil Is a Part-Timer, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Samurai Pizza Cats, alongside newer game favorites like Vampire Survivors and Fear & Hunger, plus a detour into Slipknot's real-life Burger King collaboration from his time on AXS TV's Music's Greatest Mysteries.Terrance closes with direct advice for anyone breaking into journalism: start a blog, own the platform instead of renting space on TikTok or Instagram, and treat BET's recent deletion of its journalism archive as a warning about what happens when writing lives on someone else's server. Mo shares an update on new medication and describes the adjustment period using a Goldilocks analogy, while Odie discusses recently connecting with a psychiatrist ahead of upcoming talk therapy. The big mad segment covers Terrance's exhaustion after PAX West travel, Mo's frustration with YouTube's repeated interface changes and his past experience working for the MTA, and Odie's breakdown of designer Telfar's 9/11-themed shirt and the backlash to its accompanying Instagram caption. The episode ends on lighter ground with Terrance's love of LA's improv scene at UCB and The Pack Theater, Odie's upcoming trip home to North Carolina, and Mo's seasonal apartment cleaning ahead of Halloween.Terrance Pryor's Website: terrancepryor.comInstagram: instagram.com/terrancepryormp3sandnpcs.comConnect with the Snerdy Crew: Watch, Listen, or Sponsor the show: https://beacons.ai/blackandsnerdy

The Fork In Your Ear Ep#221 "Author, Podcaster, Game Designer" - Podcast Show Notes & Summary 9-12-26   Quick Summary  Tim walks in barely held together and introduces himself as author, podcaster, and game designer — because he just dropped a playable HTML prototype of his Color Clash-inspired dual-grid RTS into the Fork Discord. The ring actually lands on Life first: Nate's kids demand VR mid-show, California is an air fryer, lane-splitters want six inches of courtesy, and both households are eating unexpected bills. Then the game firehose opens — Sony tells a courtroom that reasonable consumers know they don't own digital games, Xbox Cloud gets a 15-hour Ultimate cap, Nintendo dumps a Zelda 40th and a second Direct in two days, Ocarina of Time remake looks like a stop-motion maquette, Metroid Ravenous is metal as hell, and Kojima's canceled Sony IP is now an Xbox game. Entertainment is Coyote vs. Acme beating Warner Bros. at its own gag, Chad Powers season two sneaking back from the dead, Spider-Noir winning Emmys then getting canceled, and Nick Offerman as Big the Cat. Tech is Mac Studio M5 Max sticker shock, Apple's September event, the iPhone Duo foldable, and John Ternus's first week as CEO. Classic four-and-a-half-hour Fork: family chaos, Sony fumbles, Nintendo cooking, and Tim finally putting a game on the table.   Detailed Show Notes

My guest on the show today is writer Ann Manov, the artist formerly known as personality girl and the author of a recent essay in Harper's Magazine, “Republican Machines: Can the GOP save the humanities?”In it, Manov goes back to her alma mater, University of Florida, to report on the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education, perhaps the best known of the growing number of schools and centers around the country, typically at state universities in red states, dedicated to some mix of the great books and what has come to be called “civic thought.” On their website, the Hamilton school says that it teaches “the ideas and habits of thought that founded our country and sustain our free society.”The question Manov set out to answer, in her reporting, was basically whether these civic centers were, as they billed themselves, the saviors of liberal arts education in the US, or were they what their liberal and left-wing critics warned they were: indoctrination centers to incubate young right wing culture warriors and/or “Trojan horses designed to ravage humanities departments across the nation.”Or, and this is what Manov set out to determine, something else entirely? She writes: It struck me that, as an undergraduate at UF, I might have preferred to take Hamilton's Great Books of the Medieval World over the English department's Survey of American Literature, whose syllabus from this past spring included Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sailor Moon, and A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning. It also struck me as sufficiently unusual for a member of the GOP to go on national news, as Sasse had, to say that “the answer is not to hate on the liberal arts. The answer is to recover the liberal arts.” I decided I would go back to Gainesville and investigate for myself. As I get into some in the conversation, this is of more than just academic interest to me. I work at a college of liberal arts at a flagship state university in a red state that has not just a school of civic leadership but a separate institute in this philosophical space and a separate center in this space and a new great books-focused core curriculum that all students will be required to fulfill when it's launched in a year or two. Also, of course, I just care about these issues, because I'm a humanities guy down to my DNA.So many of the people in my life are humanities folks as well. Some of them are in one camp or another, and many are just worried about the state of the humanities, the liberal arts, in America, which we all seem to agree are under threat even if we differ from whence the threat come, whether it's the left, the right, neoliberalism, or big bad AI. So the stakes is high, as the great De La Soul once said.Eminent Americans is produced in collaboration with the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, and distributed through its publication, Arc. Peace. Here are timestamped show notes for the episode:- 0:00 — Intro: guest Ann Manov and her Harper's essay “Republican Machines: Can the GOP Save the Humanities?”- 0:32 — Overview of the Hamilton School at the University of Florida and the rise of “civic thought” centers- 5:58 — Manov joins the conversation- 7:42 — How Manov got the idea for the piece and her UF background- 10:58 — What exactly are these “civic centers”? Night-time insects of late summer with some added texture and sporadic notes. Spend the night in the backyard! Whether you're studying, working, reading, sleeping, or unwinding after a long day, this immersive ambient soundscape provides the perfect background soundtrack. No talking, no interruptions—just late summer bug chatter. Ignore the World. _____It's our third installment of late summer sounds from my backyard. The main audio was recorded over the last weekend in August. As this episode is the third installment of “A Dying Summer's Suburban slumber,” I've gone rogue and added some texture and other elements. I've got a bunch of naked night bug episodes—as in no sound (this is a family show). To me the bugs are always more fun when the temperatures get lower and affect the frequency over the night. With the weather as warm as it has been, the bugs are naked and loud.Speaking of naked, I have been thinking of Lee Iacocca—look, I probably needed two more paragraphs to segue between nude insects and the former businessman (and Snoop Dogg commercial co-host—**** that could have been my segue). What would Lee Iacocca make of our current world? No, kidding WGAS—sing out loud “Lee Iacocca… made some cars” to the tune of “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam and now you have the same tic as me! “Jay-EE-AR Tolkien, wrote some books” also works.Gawd, I had to read Lee Iacocca in high school… I skimmed about as much as I could stand, and bull****ed my way through the report. Iacocca's book cover (swagger) was presented to empty Chick-O-Stick wrappers and the other gunk at the bottom of my book bag most of the time it was in my possession. And to continue the household brand name theme— I don't give a **** about transitioning properly! Let me tell you about one of the first internet fandom-fueled movements I remember. It was late 1996 and I was a college dip****. Sophomore year, Redman's Muddy Waters forever in my cassette player. Slothing around a snowy Vermont campus in baggy jeans, XXL Pure Playaz t-shirts. It was almost time to return home for Christmas—my dad cryptically mentions over the phone that he would be sending me back after the holiday with enough breakfast for the final semester.“What?”Dad explained he was in possession of a multitude of Unfrosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts value packs. And I would be inheriting most of them. “Awesome.”My father fluctuated between bemused and proud of my sister's advocacy—while lording over a stockpile of breakfast sweets. Apparently, my younger sister had been part of SOS, a group of online Sailor Moon fans not happy with Sailor Moon syndication time slots in the United States. The distributor planned to shutter production (adaptation and dubbing for American audiences) because the show wasn't performing well. And the SOS decided rather than boycott something to save their new favorite show, SOS would stage a procott on a day in December 1996 to display their purchasing power. They chose Unfrosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts and the campaign made waves. I don't know the ramifications of what SOS accomplished overall, but Sailor Moon is still in the zeitgeist and I got a lot of Pop-Tarts. PS: Homage cover art this week inspired by Iron Nest, a video game that gives you the keys to an early 1900s Metal Gear with Myst vibes and a fantastic liminal space to inhabit. Plus, their cover art rocks—not an ad, just fanboy ****. PPS: It is a game about a fictional war, and while war runs counter to the philosophy of this podcast... I haven't felt like I was back in Myst since Riven, and I stunk at Riven.

On this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes two sets of guests whose books highlight just how powerful stories can be—for thrills, for connection, and for healing. First, Jed chats with Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss, co-authors of the YA murder mystery The Escape Game. Set on a reality TV escape-room competition, the book follows Sierra, returning to the show where her sister Alicia was murdered—determined to unmask the real killer. Marissa and Tamara share how the idea was born from an art-heist escape room, how their 20-year friendship began with Sailor Moon fan fiction, and how writing across continents turned into a "24/7" drafting process. They talk about why teens—especially girls—are drawn to dark, twisty stories, the joy and challenge of co-writing, found family dynamics, and weaving humor and puzzles into a high-stakes mystery that keeps most readers guessing wrong. In the second half, Jed welcomes debut picture book author and longtime teacher Dina Hardt to celebrate Catch of the Day. Inspired by a photo of her brother fishing, the story was first written over 20 years ago and lovingly revised after her brother Anthony's passing. Dina describes how bringing the story back became part of her healing, seeing her brother's spirit in both words and illustrations. She reflects on the bond between grandparents and grandchildren, perseverance on the fishing dock, and the quiet faith of knowing we're not alone. Dina also shares how she gets her fourth graders excited about reading and writing, and why family read-alouds—at any age—truly matter.

::Magical girl transition!:: This week, V and Emily were asked to finally, after three and a half years of hosting a fandom podcast, tackle an anime episode. So, because we are not anime girlies, we asked THEE anime expert, Erica Friedman, to join us and explain all things yuri! From school stories in the 1920s and 1930s to Sailor Moon's magical girls, and from Japan to the United States, Erica teaches us about the importance of F/F anime and manga and even inspires us to, perhaps, watch an anime film. We also discussed historical viewing lenses, queerbaiting language, '70s Trek fandom of course, and much more in this supersized episode! Sources By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime & Manga by Erica Friedman Promo Virtual TGIF/F - Our friends at TGI Femslash have just announced a brand-new, online fan con happening this summer. On August 29–30, Virtual TGIF/F will bring femslash fans from around the world together for discussion panels, online events, and more. Registration opens June 1st. Find out more at tgifemslash.com/virtualcon Pop Syllabus - Pop Syllabus is a show where host Christiana Mbakwe Medina deconstructs the zeitgeist and answers the big cultural questions. How did we swing from body positivity to thin-being-in? Why do so many people trust wellness influencers over medical doctors? And how did tech oligarchs become the new celebrities? Think of Christiana as a cross between a messy news anchor and guerilla academic. Each week, she and an expert guest will unpack a buzzy topic, and help us understand the moment while going through it.
