If what you wanted for Christmas was a whole bunch of jokes about male genitalia, well, you must've been a very good little Spooky this year! For our latest installment of B-cember — and our last episode of Spooky Tuesday until 2024 — we decided to spice up the season with Santa's Slay (2005), a holiday horror featuring wrestling star Goldberg as Jolly Old Saint Nick. Take a look under the tree and you'll find a flick full of all three grindhouse Gs, enough innuendo to kill a flying bison, and more than a few familiar faces. There's no better way to celebrate, so join us as we close out the year with a Father Christmas who could clothesline Mannheim and his signature Steamroller move with ease. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This December is “Satanic Santa” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be reviewing Christmas movies featuring murderous, rampaging Santa Claus! This week, Kyle and Trevor review David Steiman's, Santa's Slay (2005)! Starring former NFL player and pro wrestler Bill Goldberg as the titular Santa, Santa's Slay (2005) is an unrepentantly juvenile and lewd horror-comedy with its tongue firmly planted in its rosy, sugar plumb encrusted cheeks. Clumsily scripted, but ably performed, Santa's Slay is a Christmas film penned by a writer's room of young bros raised purely on a media diet of South Park, Vince Russo-era WCW, and a never ending loop of Girls Gone Wild commercials. Eric Cartman was their father. Scott Steiner, their mother. The steel drum anthem of the Girls That Have Gone Wild For Want of Beer and Beads, their evening lullaby. Lit like a Scary Movie film, with a horrendous soundtrack consisting of unknowable, bargain bin Christmas(?) songs and low grade midi tracks, Santa's Slay is nevertheless a competent production, with fine costuming for the title character, a larger comprehensible narrative, and occasionally decent production values. A fun, good-bad ride for the majority of its scant 78 minute runtime, Santa's Slay unfortunately fails to outright stick the landing, with a baffling and utterly flat finale that feels suspiciously like a result of the production losing access to Bill Goldberg prior to filming a proper conclusion. This year Santa is checking his list, knocking off the naughty, and asking 'Who's Next?'.

David Steiman (director of Santa’s Slay starring Bill Goldberg) comes back to lend his filmmaking expertise in a discussion of John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic "They Live" staring Rowdy Roddy Piper. David surprised and delights the boys with his head to toe Rowdy Roddy Piper costume he wore to the recording. And the crew breaks down the cult status film, including where it shines, and where it comes up short. And, as always David brings some thoughtful insight into the filmmaking process, noticing some crafty budget moves made in the direction of "They Live." And, as always Nick and Stephen deliver their typical non-sense including a sandwich on a pole conversation, leading us all back to the question we asked David months ago, have you gone to The Stuffed Sandwich located in San Gabriel, CA? What does he say? Listen to find out. After a jampacked WrestleMania week, the boys decided to combat content fatigue by switching gears and bringing back their pal David Steiman (director of Santa’s Slay starring Bill Goldberg) to lend his filmmaking expertise to a discussion about the 2016 WWE Studios horror turd “Incarnate” starring Aaron Eckhart. Then, the film leads to a number of other discussions including logic, Batman, tropes, exposition, demons, religion, Stephen’s formal family phone contacts, Mark Henry’s wasted cameo and of course electro-rock soundtrack providers AWOLNATION. Plus, Joey searches for “reasons” for literally anything in the movie, and Nick tries to sell everyone HARD on The Stuffed Sandwich located in San Gabriel, CA. In this very special Christmas miracle episode, Stephen ends up tracking down “Santa’s Slay” writer & director and former Brett Ratner protégé David Steiman (Red Dragon, Rush Hour 2) on Twitter, and swiftly invites him onto the show to a record a follow-up to the last edition of YSLW (featuring now yet AGAIN returning four time guest Joan Ford) to talk all about about the holiday horror cult classic he helped create. David offers up details about his initial pitch, set stories, editing woes, early casting possibilities, how B-Movie legend Roger Corman almost got involved. Plus, how WWE/WCW’s Bill Goldberg came to be cast. And, David answers everyone’s questions from the last episode while also discussing his own relationship with wrestling, and how his Jewish heritage influenced the movie. Then, everyone pitches on-screen deaths for a sequel that they definitely hope happens. Also, Nick and Joey bring up asswiping again.
