The cheerful-voiced Chestnut-collared Longspur shares their northern prairie breeding range with grazing cattle. Although heavy grazing can have adverse effects, breeding densities of longspurs jump by two, three, or even 10 times when ranchers graze their cattle responsibly on native prairies. Two centuries ago, the birds were probably more abundant on prairies used by bison than on untouched stands of tall grass.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Addiction doesn't begin with the drugs—it begins with a choice. For some, it's chasing acceptance, status, or a way to numb pain. What starts as rebellion can spiral into theft, violence, and dependency. Too often, people don't realize until it's too late that the friends, popularity, or money they were chasing never fill the emptiness inside. The result? Broken trust, wasted years, and lives left on the edge of collapse. Andre Chestnut—author of Young Hood to Our Father's Hood under the name Drew Castagna—knows this path all too well. His story begins with early bad choices and brushes with destruction, but it doesn't end there. Through near-death experiences, a persistent inner voice, and eventually a rediscovery of faith, Andre turned his life around. Today, he shares his journey to show others that no matter how far you've fallen, redemption and purpose are always within reach. Quotes: “I was born with one hand, and I learned early in life that when you don't fit in, you find other ways—sometimes the wrong ways.” “The voice never left me. Even when I ignored it, it saved me from death or prison countless times.” “We do drugs because we're searching. But the answer we're looking for isn't in the drugs—it's in the Lord.” “At some point I changed from the lamb to one of the lions. I had to learn to return to being a lamb.” “The purpose of this book is to reach the lost souls, to show them God never left—it's us who walked away.” Resources: Young Hood to Our Father Hood Follow Andre Chestnut on Facebook

She gets detailed with acorns—flour, starch, oil, and even liqueur—exploring their culinary versatility and cultural history. The conversation branches out into the rise and fall of the American chestnut, hybridization efforts, and the sometimes steamy dynamics of forest management, from masting events where trees “all go at once” to indigenous fire practices that keep ecosystems in balance. We reveal how mixed forests and diverse diets are not only good for the planet but also downright irresistible, leaving listeners nutty for more. All resources mentioned on florafungapodcast.com/183 Zbiotics: "FLORA10"Drink ZBiotics before drinking alcohol-Alcohol produces acetaldehyde, a byproduct that your next dayGaiaGardenGoodsRegenerating Ecosystems through AgricultureDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Microsoft's Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy and Carbon Removal, and Chestnut Carbon CFO Greg Adams share their perspectives as a major buyer and developer of carbon removal credits. Their 2025 deal is one of the largest carbon removal deals in the U.S. and seeks to deliver 7 million tons of nature-based carbon credits over 25 years.  Brian explains Microsoft's carbon negative strategy and targets, and the role of carbon removal credits. He also describes how Microsoft is using its Climate Innovation Fund and procurement efforts to “build missing markets” in decarbonized energy, materials, and transportation.  Greg describes how Chestnut Carbon combines afforestation, land ownership, and a private equity-backed project development model to deliver high-integrity carbon credits. He explains how their work is similar to long-term energy infrastructure contracts like power purchase agreements (PPAs), and how they are using proprietary tools to scale.   Brian and Greg also share their advice for those looking to learn more and work in the field.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comWhen it comes to soundwalks, it's unusual for me to let two years go by from the time of capturing audio until release. I had to leave this one alone for a while and come back to it with fresh ears. Dear reader, this is Ecola Soundwalk. There are a number of hiking routes at Ecola State Park just north of Cannon Beach, Oregon. It's an astonishingly beautiful headland chock full of seastacks and fog belt Sitka spruce coastal forests. It's a national treasure really, as far as state parks go.I went for the Clatsop Loop route, hoping the inland leg would provide for some quiet encounters with wildlife. It was quiet, and this ultimately informed the instrumentation I chose. When I finally came back to it, I realized the whole thing just needed to be softer and quieter. That's what was missing from my first pass at composing and arranging, over a year before. Not that any of my soundwalks are recommended for listening in a car or on a plane trip, but Ecola Soundwalk should come with a warning label: Do not attempt to listen outside a quiet environment. It won't sound good. There are even some passages that might sound experimental with their woozy, threadbare, textured minimalism. Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Chestnut-backed Chickadees eventually enter the soundscape after the five minute mark, and they come and go through the middle bit. Red crossbills fly over and Red-chested Nuthatches move slowly through the upper canopy. After a Barred Owl sighting, we once again hear the surf about 2/3 of the way through. It's distant. Below. This is not a beach soundwalk. It's a moody coastal forest soundwalk. And, it's a walk with periodic astonishing vistas. The lonesome Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is a sight to behold.Well, that's really all I can think of to say this week. Thanks for reading and listening. Thanks for sticking with me.Ecola Soundwalk is available on all music streaming services today, September 5th, 2025.
