Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 102nd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. I open with a complicated correction that involves my having mixed up Rachel Nichols and Elisabeth Harnois, the shows they were involved in, their connections to Joss Whedon productions and also cross connections through "Criminal Minds." This set covers discs 1826 to 1850 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature, from Discs 1849 and 1850, comments on the pilot episode of Matt Nix production "The Good Guys," along with my 12th ever "VideoFuzzy the Video" posted here: https://youtu.be/aT5HIqRBS50 I also traced Cross Connections turning up in this collection for Golden Threads Michael O'Neill and Stephen Weber, plus Tahmon Penniket, William B. Davis, Gary Anthony Williams, Erica Gimpel, Ally Walker, Marion Ross, Chrisotpher Lloyd, Scott Bakula, Fred Willard, Swoosie Kurtz, Allison Janney, Terry O'Quinn, Marilyn Manson, Mitch Pileggi, Jon Waters, Bob Clendinen, Neil Patrick Harris, Molly Shannon, John Michael Higgins, Idina Menzel, Judy Greer, Kelsey Grammer, Saul Rubinek, Rachel York, Brent Sexton, Kevin "Repo" Thomas, M.C. Gainey, Kate Vernon and Wade Williams. Plus from "Mid-Century Modern" and elsewhere, I recognize my latest Golden Thread: Bruno Amato. In my Classic Collection, I encountered a few disc errors, suggesting my current DVD player may be wearing out. In the meantime, lots of high-drama season finales in this set. Comments on "Grey's Anatomy," "Fringe," "The Simpsons," "Chuck," "Breaking Bad," and a discussion on the Weeping Angels in "Doctor Who." In Old Business, I track down a musical comedy clip of Martin Short listing celebrities and other notables who refuse to appear on "The Late Show with David Letterman." I'd archived a portion of that one to disc 225 but hadn't seen the first half in perhaps ever until I found it on YouTube in a clip compilation of Martin Short appearances hosted by David Letterman and Paul Schaffer. I posted it here, cued to the 22-minute mark: https://bit.ly/3G52J9e In What I've Been Watching, comments on the Vernal Theatre's outstanding production of "Kiss Me Kate," the second season premiere of "Doctor Who" on Disney+, the first season of "Continuum" and pilot episodes of "Millennium," "Profiler" and "Mid-Century Modern." SPREADING THE WORD! "VideoFuzzy: The Video - Celebrating 100 Episodes!" is posted at https://youtu.be/eWfcCDiOZ2I. Please share as you're able to with anyone you feel might enjoy this production. Joan Allen is a senator nominated to fill an open VP slot who refuses to address any allegations of sexual impropriety in her past. Gary Oldman is a congressman trying to destroy her during the confirmation hearings.  Does anyone actually read these show notes? Do we need to mention that Christian Slater, Sam Elliott, William Peterson, Mike Binder, and Saul Rubinek are all in it, too, in order to game some search engines? You know, for all the Rubinek-heads out there? The episode title is a BIG LEBOWSKI reference, since Bridges and Elliott were in that movie. This week, we're saddling up and getting back to our old ways, shootin' some fellas who may or may not deserve it, but deserves ain't got nothin' to do with it either way. It's 1992's Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Saul Rubinek, Frances Fisher, Anna Thomson and a blink-and-you'll-miss-him Lachlyn Munro. A revisionist western primarily concerned with upending the myth of the great American frontier that its director and star built his career off of, it is a dark, bleak and dreadful film that took home Oscar gold for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Hackman) -- just the third time in the Awards' history that a Western had taken the top prize. Plus: we're both deep in our respective music bags this week, hyperfixating on tunes from Willow Avalon and Bruce Cockburn. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Unforgiven is currently streaming in Canada on and in the United States on Max at the time of publication. You can also find the show now on both BlueSky and Instagram, @adhddvdpod. Other works discussed on this week's episode include The X-Files, The Idea of You, Tenet, Canadian Bacon, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Superbad, Oppenheimer, Mission: Impossible 2, GoldenEye, Mission: Impossible 3, Alias, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles, Tomorrowland, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Rye Lane, Baby Driver, Jaws, The Fabelmans, No Country For Old Men, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, Juror #2, Heat, Tombstone and High Plains Drifter. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month by roping a few of our January features' top stars as George Clooney and Bernie Mac unite next week for 2001's Ocean's Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh -- one of the most rewatchable films ever made, as we can't wait to revisit it yet again as it gets welcomed into the ADHD-DVD podcast canon. Ocean's 11 is now streaming on Starz at the time this episode was released. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Mark Leiren-Young wrote Shylock in 1996, a play using Shakespeare's controversial Jewish character in The Merchant of Venice to explore modern-day cancel culture. While the script saw productions aorund the world, Leiren-Young was wary of giving the rights away too quickly, knowing it was complex, sensitive subject matter that required an intellectual approach. So when he met the acclaimed actor Saul Rubinek, who proposed that Leiren-Young rewrite the script to tailor it to his own real life, Leiren-Young jumped at the chance. A fan of blending fact with fiction, the B.C.-based writer began researching Rubinek's life and updating the nearly 20-year-old script to match a post-pandemic view of what "cancel culture" really means. The result is Playing Shylock, running at Canadian Stage until Dec. 8 in Toronto. Leiren-Young sat down with his old friend Ralph Benmergui to discuss how this show came to life, what it was like creating the production during and after Oct. 7, and how he got his start in writing—including an early break writing an unconventional pacifist episode of the '90s CGI cartoon Beast Wars. The Canadian acting legend Saul Rubinek has returned to the stage to explore one of theatre's most controversial characters: Shylock, the Jewish moneylender in Shakespeare's comedy “The Merchant of Venice.” Saul stars as a fictionalized version of himself in Canadian Stage's new production of “Playing Shylock,” which takes a poignant yet comedic look at cancel culture, representation and anti-Semitism. But for Saul, it's about more than that — it's about keeping an audience “off balance.” He sits down with Tom Power to talk about the play, and how “Q” actually ended up influencing the production.

It's a retro review this week for Movies Merica with the political thriller “The Contender” that flew under the radar when it was released in 2000. It's the story of a political figure that is going to shake things up in Washington D.C. in a way many D.C. power players don't want. As a result, those power players launch an all-out legal and media assault on them to drive them out of D.C. Sound familiar? Joan Allen plays Laine Hanson who is picked as a replacement for the Vice President to Jeff Bridges' President Jackson Evans. This pick causes a stir and Congressman Shelly Runyon, played by a slimy Gary Oldman, comes out guns blazing against Laine. President Evans and his Chief Of Staff, played by Sam Elliott, have to deflect the bullets coming at her especially a big one of an erotic nature from back in her college days. Will Laine withstand the massive smear campaign or will she crumble under the weight of the swamp? Is it worth finding out? Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. In this episode, discuss the 1990 comedy (??) - The Bonfire of the Vanities. Coming from the legendary director Brian De Palma, The Bonfire of the Vanities attempts to adapt the best-selling novel of the same name. However, problem after problem caused this film to fail at the box office and get hammered by the critics. The problems were so epic, a film critic wrote a bestselling book about all the behind-the-scenes drama, “The Devil's Candy: The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco.” As a bonus feature, we sneak in a quick review of a 2015 documentary on the director himself, De Palma. We are excited to welcome John from And Now Something A Little Bit Different YouTube Channel to help break down this utter failure. The Bonfires of the Vanities is directed by Brian De Palma and stars Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Morgan Freeman, Kim Cattrall, Saul Rubinek, and F. Episode 52: UNFORGIVEN We're delving into Unforgiven this week. Clint Eastwood's 1992 revisionist Western is about an aging, supposedly reformed gunslinger who mounts his saddle for one last hit job. The film explores vengeance and the consequences of violence. Eastwood is joined by a stellar cast that includes Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Saul Rubinek and Richard Harris. It won four Oscars including Best Picture. Unforgiven ranks #18 on our countdown.* Come back again next week for a discussion on Barry Jenkins' 2016 drama Moonlight. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

Journey alongside Saul Rubinek, a remarkable actor whose career spans iconic films such as "Unforgiven" and underrated gems like "Dick." Explore his dynamic talents in hit series like "Warehouse 13" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation," as well as his involvement in the captivating single-shot Shoah feature, "Shttl." Saul's enduring passion for acting shines through in every role, making him a true legend in both film and television.   Recorded prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.   My guest, Saul Rubinek, and I discuss: Saul Rubinek's play, "All in the Telling," delves deeper into his family story, building on the groundwork laid by the play and documentary, "So Many Miracles," which he was encouraged to pursue by a friend. Born in a refugee camp during the Holocaust, Saul's parents were saved by Polish farmers before settling in Montreal, Canada. Saul discusses his role as a Nazi hunter in the Amazon series "Hunters," his involvement in Project Paperclip, and his experience working with Al Pacino. "True Romance," now a cult classic, initially flopped upon release. In "Dick," a forgotten Richard Nixon/Watergate comedy, Saul played the role of Henry Kissinger, a classic yet overlooked comedy gem. "Shttl," a single-shot Shoah feature shot in Ukraine prior to the war, offers a glimpse into life in Jewish Ghettos, which have since been destroyed. Saul shares anecdotes and unique experiences from working with Clint Eastwood on the set of "Unforgiven" plus some great stories about screenwriter David Peoples.  Discussing "Warehouse 13," Saul highlights what makes it a great show and expresses his hopes for a revival. Saul's friendship with Brent Spiner and the tragic story behind how he landed his iconic role on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" are revealed. Saul provides valuable insights into the life of an actor and much more during our conversation.   You're going to love my conversation with Saul Rubinek IMDB Twitter Instagram   Follow Jeff Dwoskin (host): Jeff Dwoskin on Twitter The Jeff Dwoskin Show podcast on Twitter Podcast website Podcast on Instagram Join my mailing list Buy me a coffee (support the show) Subscribe to my Youtube channel (watch Crossing the Streams!) Actor Saul Rubinek was born in a displaced person's camp in Germany right after the Second World War. His Polish parents survived the Holocaust thanks to Christian farmers who hid them from the Nazis. After the family moved to Canada in 1949, Rubinek's father Israel used to blame Hitler for curtailing his burgeoning career in Yiddish theatre. That's why it meant so much to his son, now 74, to play the role of a Holocaust-era rabbi in the new movie Shttl, reciting his lines completely in Yiddish, his mamaloshen. Acting in a fully Yiddish film was a first for the veteran Hollywood star, whose Jewish credits include Barney's Version, Hunters _and _The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick. And shooting it in Ukraine, just before the Russian invasion, has imbued it with even heavier symbolism. Stttl has its Canadian debut at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival this week, and Rubinek joins _The CJN Daily _from his home in Los Angeles to discuss why filming it felt so personal. Show notes not written by a GPT3. For some reason the crew decides to discuss their future plans for thanksgiving during an episode scheduled to air THREE WEEKS LATER.Lethe: John is off drinkin' and fightin' and not gettin' therapy in this episode, so Shaw handles the number. VIGILANCE is looking for something in the cancer patient's memory. Samaritan??!?  Saul Rubinek carries this episode on his shoulders. Jude slanders the good name of Warehouse 13. Last time we saw Control she was played by a hand model. Fusco is the sterling example of how this project actually had positive outcomes. Law and Order has gone on WAY too long.Alethia: Fusco might be the best character, or at least the most likeable. Fusco/Shaw unlikely animal pairings. We actually think John's grief arc is good, if not fully healthy at the beginning. The Control/root conflict is a clash of true believers, in a fascinating way. "Shaw is a hammer and John is a scalpel" is proof that Finch is romantically entangled with John.Connect with the show at @babylonpodjectHelp us keep the lights on via our Patreon!Justen can be found at @justenwritesAna can be found at @The_Mianaai, and also made our show art. Both Ana and Justen can also be found on The Compleat Discography, a Discworld re-read podcast.Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude. Perhaps the creepiest portrayal of an abusive relationship on Star Trek. Saul Rubinek gets called in to guest star with aplomb and embodies an evil that's all too real. Data gets captured by malicious trader Kivas Fahjo, and put on display in his collection of unique items. At least 50% of the artifacts are from Earth, except for the knock-off Salacious Crumb. Data pulls the trigger on his Chekhov's varon-T disuptor and escapes with another captive, but there's always another Varria. Fahjo should receive more praise as a Star Trek villain, which special guest Susan Arendt (@susanarendt on Twitter) makes sure to point out!
