And while the mainstream depiction is of a jolly old elf who's white and decked out in a red, fur-lined suit, some Native Santas are inspiring yuletide cheer in their own ways. Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire shadowed one across Oregon. At the Chifin Native Youth Center in Springfield, Oreg., a packed classroom welcomes Solte Santa, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, Peppermint the Elf, and others from the North Pole. Jerry Payne, the man behind the curly beard, explains his role. “'Solte' in Salish means 'warrior', so I wanted to honor that. And I'm a veteran myself. Every community has their own style of Santa so I wanted to make sure that the Indigenous Natives got to be represented as well.” Solte Santa has made nine appearances across Portland, Eugene, and other places this month, listening to kids' wish lists and posing for family photos. With a feathered bustle, candy cane staff, and festive beadwork, he contrasts sharply with the Coca-Cola Santa that's been widely iconic since the 1930s. But Payne says that's a plus. “The mall Santa or typical Santa that everybody knows like the Coca-Cola Santa … for whatever reason, kids are scared of that Santa. But I've had kids that … their parent would say that they would never come up to take a picture with me. Next thing you know, they're hugging me and jumping in my lap and we take a good picture. Their parents are crying because they never got a good picture with their kid.” A study involving an Oregon State University scholar looked at non-traditional Santas. Bori Csillag, Stirek assistant professor of management, said for many Father Christmases, spreading love and joy for the holidays surpassed the need to conform 100% to the mainstream depiction of Santa Claus. “They see the fit, they hear the calling in their heart, they know that they are able to portray their role successfully.” Besides Solte Santa, a First Nations dancer called Powwow Santa has been firing up social media, and there are many others across tribal communities, reminding people that the Christmas spirit exists for everyone. A Navajo children's television show returned this month with a holiday special. Jill Fratis reports. The “Navajo Highways” special is titled “Ya’ah’teeh Keshmish,” which is “Merry Christmas” in Navajo. It's the show's first full holiday themed episode. The creator of the series, filmmaker, and musician Pete Sands, says the show teaches Navajo language and culture. “Parts of it is my childhood, and part of it is how I wish my childhood was. It's a balance of both, and I think shining positivity on Indigenous cultures is important to do.” The series blends puppetry, storytelling, and Navajo humor, all set along the winding highways of the Navajo Nation. Sands says that a memory he had of a teacher using puppets to help children listen, gave him the idea to use them in his show. “Seen a teacher friend of mine who was trying to tell her first grade students to clean up, but they wouldn't listen to her, so she reached into her desk and she pulled out a hand puppet and started talking to her class, and they listened to her, through the puppet actually, and a lightbulb went off in my head like wait, maybe there's something to this. Maybe I can use this.” The holiday episode highlights traditional winter teachings, including family gatherings, gratitude, and the meaning of giving. Season two of the series begins production next year. Sands says there will be new puppets and new locations, but says the heart of the show remains the same: teaching children simple Diné words and phrases through everyday scenes and conversations. Remember "Just One of the Guys"? Remember "Mrs. Doubtfire"? Remember your high school class ON "Twelfth Night"? In fact, we got so confused we'd routinely forget the name of this movie, constantly but not purposely referring to it as "Just One of the Santas." What does that say about just how memorable this movie—whose title escapes us once again—is? Well, "Mr. Doubtfire"—which we now almost referred to as "Mr. Belvedere" and whatever happened to the actor who played youngest son Wesley on that show and now we've completely forgotten about what movie we're talking about. Again. That is to say this podcast goes off on A LOT of tangents because once a movie's main character seems to forget that both social security numbers and the Internet exist, we can only focus on it so much. Horns, Hostages, and Human Trafficking Santa – Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we go full Finland and unwrap a Christmas movie that answers the question nobody asked: what if Santa Claus wasn't a jolly gift-giver, but an ancient, horned, child-snatching nightmare buried under a mountain?Our main feature is Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (dir. Jalmari Helander), a wintery sci-fi/horror-dark-comedy that feels like The Thing wandered into a folk tale, got frostbite, and decided to start a black-market Santa operation.The setup is instantly great: a US drilling team blasts into the Korvatunturi mountain and hits something that absolutely should not be thawed. Nearby, reindeer herders start finding their animals slaughtered, children begin disappearing, and weird petty theft spreads through the village — radios, hairdryers, potato sacks… all vanishing like some grim Advent calendar of doom.At the centre is young Pietari, a kid who's convinced Santa is real… and that Santa is coming to punish him. While the adults argue about Russians, borders and compensation invoices, Pietari is reading ancient texts about a pagan “Santa” with horns, and building literal Home Alone-style defences because he thinks he's next.Then things get properly deranged: a naked, feral old man is caught in a wolf trap baited with a pig's head — and the locals start to suspect they've found Santa. Turns out they've found one of his helpers… and the rules are simple: no swearing, no aggression, no “bad behaviour”, because these elves replicate and escalate like gremlins with hypothermia. Suddenly it's old, nude men everywhere, and the film leans into it with alarming confidence.The finale goes full Goonies-in-a-blizzard: helicopters, a reindeer pen used as a trap, kids in sacks as bait, dynamite in the ice, and a plan so insane it only works because everyone is too cold to argue.And then the ending swerves again — from folk-horror survival to capitalism speedrun — as the village realises the “elves” are worth money, hoses them down, trains them up, and ships them around the world as mall Santas in crates like festive livestock. It's bizarre, dark, and very funny in a “wait… did they really just do that?” way.It's not cosy. It's not sweet. The last full week of work in 2025 comes to an end today! We'll be around next Monday through Wednesday, but we'll both be off on Christmas & the day after. Same thing the following week for New Year's. In the news this morning, an absolute tragedy involving NASCAR Champion Greg Biffle & his family as they all died in a plane crash yesterday along with three others. Also in the news, the Brown University shooter has been found dead in NH, Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan was found guilty of obstruction. And in more positive news…the $1.5 Billion Powerball drawing is tomorrow! To talk a bit more about the Greg Biffle disaster, we got Doc on the phone just after 8am, thanks to County Materials in Holmen. Elsewhere in sports, Week 16 in the NFL kicked off last night with a thrilling win in overtime for the Seahawks, the Bucks lost to the Raptors last night, the Badger volleyball team's run to a championship came to an end at the hands of Kentucky last night, and the Badger men's basketball team takes on Villanova tonight in Milwaukee. We also talked about the Bowl Game schedule and the entertainment at February's NBA All-Star weekend. Plus, more details about the firing of Ohio University's coach, and the details on next year's "Patriot Games". We let you know what's on TV and in theaters this weekend, and if you're planning on traveling for the holidays…here's some solid advice from the TSA. Discussed some of the worst gifts to get during the holidays. Had a story about a grandmother in Virginia who's trying to track down a woman who performed life-saving CPR on her back in November after she suffered a heart attack while in a park.
