Happy Holidays all you goblins, ghouls, demon elfs, and zombie reindeer. Zach and Matt found a new reason to complain this season with All The Creatures Were Stirring (2018). We get to dissect an anthology.
Our main feature this week is Castle Freak, the age-old tale of a blind woman with a douchebag boyfriend inheriting a castle with a freak living in the walls. But before we get to that, we're talking Anything for Jackson, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight, The Lost Boys, Hellier, The Ninth Configuration, Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Porno, All the Creatures Were Stirring, Lost Highway, Existenz, and Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe.

Chris & Kelsey spend their Christmas in a series of spooky vignettes. The Classic Film: Tales from the Crypt (1972) "Five strangers get lost in a crypt and, after meeting the mysterious Crypt Keeper, receive visions of how they will die” (IMDb.com). A charming collection of EC Comics-style stories (including one about an escaped, psychopathic Santa), Tales from the Crypt is pretty much exactly what you'd expect. The Modern Film: All the Creatures Were Stirring (2018) "When an awkward date on Christmas Eve leads a couple into a strange theater, they're treated to a bizarre and frightening collection of Christmas stories, featuring a wide ensemble of characters doing their best to avoid the horrors of the holidays” (IMDb.com). Sometimes we watch a movie that's worse for how much promise it shows in an otherwise bad package. This is one of those times. Eric and I have almost made it to our destination - the Chattanooga Film Festival, 2019!! Our next stop along the way is our recap of CFF 2018! And while there have been amazing moments that I will never forget from each of the years that I've attended CFF, 2018 might have been the best year yet! With so much awesomeness to talk about, this episode is a bit longer than the episodes covering CFF 2016 and 2017. Even though this was a longer episode, we still weren't able to cover EVERY film that I saw in 2018. So, once again, we restricted the films that we focused on using the following criteria: 1) they are movies that I saw during the film festival that year, 2) they are movies that are available online (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), 3) they are movies that represented the experience of the film fest, rather than just being a good movie (there are some movies that are great movies, but you could get roughly the same experience seeing them in any movie theater...and there are other movies that might not necessarily be as "good," but it will be an experience that you are not likely to have outside of a film festival). With those criteria in mind, the films from 2018 that are covered in tonight's episode are: A Prayer Before Dawn, Lowlife, Let the Corpses Tan, Ghost Stories, All the Creatures Were Stirring, and The Ranger, along with some brief highlights about Wolfman's Got Nards, Summer of '84, Tigers are Not Afraid, Dementia: Part II, and my interview with Matt Mercer, Graham Skipper, and Kevin Sluder. We end the episode by discussing the second wave of films announced for CFF 2019*!! *We recorded this episode a few days ago, but weren't able to get it posted until tonight. When discussing the 2nd wave of films, we talk about not being sure if this is the 2nd of many waves, or if it was the 2nd half of two parts (it's the later). We also talk about not being sure when the schedule will be released. The schedule is now posted on the CFF website. For tickets or more information (including complete lists of films screened each year) go to chattfilmfest.org - and be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter to stay up to date on announcements for CFF 2019. And be sure to come back soon for more cinematic discussions on The Gargyle Podcast!! Up next, we continue our CFF 2019 pre-coverage with a very special guest. If you are even remotely excited about the Chattanooga Film Festival, you will NOT want to miss our next episode!! gargylereviews.wixsite.com/thegargyle music from besound.com

This week, things are not always what they seem. The grue-crew dive into a Yuletide anthology film and head to the psych ward for some demonic mumbo-jumbo. The first film this week is ALL THE CREATURES WERE STIRRING from directors David Ian McKendry and Rebekah McKendry, featuring a variety of horrific tales for the holiday season. The second film is THE HARROWING from director Jon Keeyes, featuring a rogue detective on the hunt for a demonic secret tucked deep inside an asylum. Doc Rotten and Vanessa Thompson from Horror News Radio along with Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era share their thoughts about this week's awesome collection of streaming horror films. Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 048 ALL THE CREATURES WERE STIRRING - THE HARROWING All The Creatures Were Stirring When an awkward date on Christmas Eve leads a couple into a strange theater, they're treated to a bizarre and frightening collection of Christmas stories, featuring a wide ensemble of characters doing their best to avoid the horrors of the holidays. From boring office parties and last-minute shopping to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons, there's plenty out there to fear this holiday season. "A Christmas horror anthology? I loved it. I had so much fun watching this!" - Vanessa "I liked this. I liked anthologies in general and the trouble with anthologies most of the time is that they’re uneven. … This one, at least for me, 4 out of 5 are thumbs up and the fifth one, I really liked the idea, but I wanted to see a lot more." - Jeff "It certainly is successful for what it is, what it sets out to do. I really like the tone and the feel and the execution of the interstitials, the little theater scenes. … Of course, as much Maria Olsen as you can put into your film, do it!" - Doc Director: David Ian McKendry, Rebekah McKendry Cast: Graham Skipper, Matt Long, Megan Duffy, Constance Wu Release: Currently available on SHUDDER The Harrowing Haunted by the ritualistic killing of his best friend, a vice detective determined to discover the truth goes undercover into a forensic hospital and is plunged into his own personal Hell where demons might be real. "It does a really good job at keeping you unsure as to what’s going on because you get two stories here and you have to decide who’s telling the truth and who’s not." - Vanessa "This is a really complicated character to play and … I thought Matthew Tompkins did a really good job. I was impressed with what he did." - Jeff "It’s a solid entry. It’s an impressive introduction to a new director (Jon Keeyes). It will be interesting to see what he does next." - Doc Director: Jon Keeyes Cast: Matthew Thompkins, Arnold Vosloo, Michael Ironside Release: Available on VOD and on Demand December 25, 2018 from Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment.

Ho ho ho! It's a very gothy Christmas at Parallax Views and we're celebrating the holidays in spooky-style with not one but two guests known for their work in the horror genre. So crack out the eggnog, cobwebs, and gingerdead men because the slay bells are ringing at Parallax Views! First up, filmmaker David Ian McKendry joins us to discuss holiday horror movies and All the Creatures Were Stirring, a new yuletide horror anthology directed by David and his wife Rebekah McKendry that stars Crazy Rich Asian's Constance Wu and House of the Devil's Jocelin Donahue among others. If you're looking for an unconventional way to cinematically celebrate the holidays this year look no further than All the Creatures Were Stirring. It's a collection of seasonal terror tales that turns such mundane horrors as last minute, holiday office parties, and awkward Christmas dinners into the stuff nightmares are made of! All the Creatures Were Stirring is cult classic in the making that'll be required viewing for horror aficionados during the holiday season. David Ian McKendry Constance Wu and Morgan Peter Brown in All the Creatures Were Stirring Jonathan Kite in All the Creatures Were Stirring Jocelin Donahue in All the Creatures Were Stirring Check out All the Creatures Were Stirring, streaming now on Shudder, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, and Vudu And be sure to listen to David's podcast, Fear Initiative As well as Rebekah McKendry's podcast, Shock Waves Then, in the second half of the show, Parallax Views is joined by the legendary British horror author Ramsey Campbell, the mind behind such nightmarish masterpieces as The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants, The Nameless, Demons by Daylight, Alone with the Horrors, The Last Revelation of Gla'aki, and many other goosebumps-inducing classics. Ramsey Campbell The conversation takes a turn into Christmas territory right off the bat as Ramsey explain how a holiday-themed children's tale served as a key inspiration for his explorations of supernatural horror and the uncanny. Moreover Ramsey also discusses how M.R. James, whose strange ghost stories have become a staple of the Christmas season in Britain, has served as a chief influence on his work. From there it's off to the races as we discuss Ramsey's early work going back to Ghostly Tales, which Ramsey wrote at the tender age of 11 years old. We then delve into how H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror stories were a pivotal discovery for Ramsey in his youth, Lovecraft's use of psychological realism, how that has influenced his own writings, and the encouragement he received from various parties to pursue his passion for writing in those formative years. We then move into discussing how Ramsey went from writing Lovecraftian pastiches during his early years to finding his own unique voice. This opens us up for a discussion about the how literature not traditionally considered part of the horror genre has impacted Ramsey's writing. In this regard Ramsey goes on to explains the revelation that reading the Russian author Vladimir Nabakov, specifically Lolita, was for him. Additionally we discuss how horror often arises in places many would not initially recognize in film and literature such as Herman Melville's Bartleby, the Scrivener and Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. From there we delve into the themes of urban decay, alienation, distorted perceptions, and psychologically disturbance that pervades many of his stories. During this portion of the discussion Ramsey details how his personal experiences of living in post-war Britain with his mother informed these preoccupations. We then dive into Ramsey's explorations of sex and death in his erotic horror anthology Scared Stiff, which tackled the relationship between the two taboo themes head on. We begin to wrap up the conversation by returning to H.P. Lovecraft in the form of the Gla'aki mythos, which is Ramsey's personal contribution to the Lovecraftian universe. Then Ramsey takes some time to tell listeners about his latest work including By the Light of My Skull, Way of the Worm, Think Yourself Lucky, and Thirteen Days by Sunset Beach. Then Ramsey gives his advice to young writers and gives his take on the enduring appeal of the horror genre. KEEP UP WITH RAMSEY CAMPBELL'S LATEST WORK AT HIS WEBSITE Parallax Views hopes you enjoy this episode as a special treat during the holidays. This week Dan goes to his first WWE Smackdown Live and runs into his oldest friends and the night gets crazy. We then have a discussion about life, friendship, and why it's important to keep those old lines of communication open. We also give some opinions about the Golden Globes nominations. Now we have some catching up to do on a lot of these movies as several of them haven't hit our area. just take them with a grain of salt, folks. It's all in fun anyway. Once that's all said and done we move on to our reviews. First up: We give some quick thoughts on the new Hellboy trailer, Steve has finally purchased Shudder and gives his energetic review. Dan has watched Dumplin' and speaks his mind on that one. We've both watched All The Creatures Were Stirring and discuss that in detail. But then, people.... We talk Aquaman. BOY do we talk Aquaman. However, while we do get into it quite a bit, for the most part this is a spoiler-free review. Strap in. We wrap things up with some strong feelings about Alfonso Cuaron's Roma and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. People, we've been wanting to bring you a longer show for quite some time and we brought it. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. This is the part where you push play. If you like what you're hearing, please share this. Help spread the word. We'd really appreciate it. Alright, let's do it. This week on the show Kyle and Matthew welcome Rebekah and David McKendry to discuss the madcap world of exploitation cinema. Rebekah and Dave are incredible sources on the topic and in this episode they barely even scratch the surface. Folks, we got ourselves another going series here! But this episode has some FANTASTIC info if you have ever been interested in the topic. Go beyond the scratchy film filter of iMovie and dig into what defines an exploitation film. Learn that exploitation goes all the way back to the earliest days of motion pictures. They explore early “educational” films that featured dubious information about taboo subjects, plus the group analyzes why everybody at nudist camps plays so much volleyball. This episode is a lot of fun if you love the underbelly of the film world. Check out Rebekah and Dave's upcoming holiday horror film All the Creatures Were Stirring which is out on December 4thon VOD and perfect for your holiday movie list! Weekly Rads: (Man we had a whole lot of weekly rads this week!) Welcome to another episode of The Gargyle Podcast! Continuing our coverage of the Chattanooga Film Festival, tonight Daniel, Tim, and I discuss some of the most "fun" movies of the weekend. All of the movies discussed in tonight's episode were either horror or violent in nature, some of which were very, very bloody...hence the "fun" being in quotes. They were violent and bloody, but they also look like they were a lot of fun to make and they are definitely fun to watch (if you enjoy horror)! Even though these were some of the most fun movies of the weekend (and personally some of my favorites of the weekend!)...just talking about them is nowhere near as much fun in comparison as watching them. So, hopefully our discussions did justice to just how much fun these movies were and how much we loved them! Tonight's movies include The Ranger, My Monster (short film), All the Creatures Were Stirring, Rock Ste
