On today's episode we got the pleasure of speaking with Ashlei whose son, Colton was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 11.  Colton is 17 now.  Something special that they do is go get donuts every year on his diaversary (diagnosis day).We loved recording with Ashlei!  She is the definition of a momma bear who is here to protect her children at all costs.  She tells us about Colton and his diagnosis and she also shares about his alert dog, Runner.  Ashlei shares some very interesting stories about Runner and how amazing he is at alerting Colton.  These alert dogs are astounding, and I love listening to their stories.   Colton was Talki Foundation's person of the year in 2021.  This episode will conclude our recordings with the Talki Foundation.   We have loved spotlighting them through November since November is Diabetes Awareness month.   A big thank you to the Talki Foundation for sharing their stories with the world through our platform. Jeri Miller, a high school guidance counselor who suffers from Type I diabetes, has been on insulin for 15 years, injecting herself four or five times a day. She discusses how children and adults in her situation can benefit from a Diabetes Alert Dog such as her Morgan. A half hour before her meter tells her that she must take her medication Morgan alerts her to the need, working every hour of every day. Ms. Miller describes in great detail how Service Dogs like Morgan alert their companions from a mile away, obey commands to get a test kit or juice, and dial 911 when needed. These special dogs start their training at 13 weeks old, and they can work with children as young as two years old. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

We’re taking about MINDFULNESS with musical inspiration from Pink. Mindfulness is a technique adopted to becoming aware of moment-by-moment thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in a non-judgmental way. ... In the US, mindfulness is being increasingly used for eating habits and diabetes management. Research has shown that mindfulness enhances clinical effect of glycemic control. Mindfulness can help break down the constant cycle of becoming stressed, anxious and depressed. Pressures and strains of everyday diabetes life cause an internal battle of avoidance. People strive to avoid ‘negative emotions’ such as guilt, sadness, frustration and anger and instead are attracted to feelings of happiness and contentment. Mindfulness allows you to accept the way you are feeling rather than constantly battling to try and change it. Guests include Chilbrook Kennels Breeder Author, Diabetes Alert Dog and Scent Detection Expert, Debby Kay, ‘Walking with Peety’ Author Eric O’Grey, Poet Lorraine Brooks, ‘Yoga for Diabetes’ Author, Rachel Zinman, and  the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach featuring Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE.  Throughout the podcast we will be featuring songs from the Pink’s ‘Beautiful Trauma’ album courtesy of SONY Music.

We’re talking about coping with diabetes, depression and feelings of shame during the holidays on December’s Diabetes Late Nite with musical inspiration from Leona Lewis. ‘Tis the season for family, festivity, and temptations that may disrupt daily diabetes health routines. That means it's also the season when eating healthy, staying active, and taking medication on schedule is harder to do.  The added stress and anxiety of staying on track with your diabetes health may cause even those who are usually content to experience loneliness, anxiety and a lack of fulfillment. Studies show that people with diabetes have a greater risk of depression than people without diabetes. Just like denial, depression can get you into a vicious cycle. It can block good diabetes self-care. “I have a best friend who has severe depression, who takes medication and still struggles, so I know how bad it can be,” says Leona Lewis. She describes herself as having “highs and lows” brought on by circumstance, not a clinical illness. In retrospect, frustrated and anxious might have been better terms to use, but she declines to dwell on it. If you are feeling symptoms of depression, don't keep them to yourself. First, talk them over with your doctor. Guests include Diabetes Alert Dog expert, Debby Kay CDT, CDTA, PDTI, Megrette Fletcher, MEd, RD, CDE, the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, Janis Roszler RD, CDE, LDN, Emmy winning Producer, Linda Bracero Morel, Poet Lorraine Brooks and Mama Rose Marie. Plus, we’re giving away 6 months access to mySugr Pro in our INSTANT WINNER challenge.   Throughout the podcast we will be featuring music from Leona Lewis’ “Christmas, with Love” album courtesy of SONY Music.
