We now pull out the third record from this seven disk box set. A record that features a relatively unknown work AND probably one of the most famous works in music history. Talk about a dichotomy.   This is music from the immortal Ludwig Van Beethoven. His symphonies live on in performances to this very day.   Plus I decided to play three movements from each symphony. I thought this joint needed some classing up.   So, settle in and get ready to hear the man who is said to have set music free in Volume 227: Beethoven's 4th & 5th.   For more information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it.    Here is the promised Leonard Bernstein video.    Credits and copyrights   Beethoven, René Leibowitz, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Beecham Choral Society – The Nine Symphonies Of Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven Label: Reader's Digest – RD 4-6 Format: 7 x Vinyl, LP Box Set Released: 1966 Genre: Classical Style: Romantic, Choral   This is record 3 of a 6 record set. We will hear two movements from the 4th Symphony and three from the 5th.   Symphony No. 4 In B-Flat Major, Op. 60 First Movement - Adagio; Allegro Vivace Second Movement - Adagio Fourth Movement - Allegro Ma Non Troppo   Symphony No. 5 In C Minor, Op. 67 First Movement - Allegro Con Brio Third Movement - Allegro Fourth Movement - Allegro   I do not own the rights to this music. Well, well, well. This week returns us to Midnight, but this time with Lombardo space marines on a search and recovery mission to a diamond mine that has gone silent. Another interesting future-tech gadget from the mind of RTD, with the TARDIS cracking the spacesuit selection for Belinda and the Doctor. But overall, David thought the Doctor's thinking and planning was sloppy and Ben thought the story was a bit choppy. Opening music is "Diamonds are Forever" composed and conducted by John Barry with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Closing music is a 1935 recording from Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians, "I'm Just an Ordinary Human". We recorded this episode on 29 April 2025.

Interpreten: Liya Petrova, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Duncan Ward, Alexandre KantorowLabel: MirareEAN: 3760127226918Virtuose Geigenliteratur hat es diese Woche wieder zu besonderen Ehren auf radio klassik Stephansdom gebracht. Die neue CD Momentum 2 von Liya Petrova hat Michael Gmasz überzeugt! Was er daran so herausragend findet? Lesen Sie selbst! GHOST MUSIC finds the fictional Orchestra of London beset by difficulties. Zimetski, their fiery Polish conductor, drives musicians simultaneously to greater performances and personal desperation, while Pete, the orchestral manager, attempts damage control. William Mellor, a cellist, buys an antique cello at auction only to discover that it has supernatural qualities. A mysterious young woman then joins the orchestra, captivates the conductor and attempts to captivate William, who's struggling to get back together with his estranged wife. In the end, no force, whether earthly or otherwise, can keep William from confronting the cello's true nature – as well as his own. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alice McVeigh has been published by Orion/Hachette in contemporary fiction, by UK's Unbound using a pen name in scifi, and now in multi-award-winning Austenesque fiction. (mg)

Nimrod Borenstein is a brilliant composer, who was a child prodigy as both a composer and performer. His often complex music is beloved by performers and audiences alike, and has been widely recorded and performed internationally. He is also a renowned conductor, and he spoke to me about his difficult decision to cut short his career as a violin soloist in order to find alternate career options as he developed his career as a composer. Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active champion of Nimrod's music, and you'll hear the charming story of their first meeting.  Ashkenazy first conducted Borenstein's orchestral work The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe op. 52 to great acclaim, and the Chandos label released a very successful album devoted to Borenstein's music conducted by Ashkenazy featuring his Violin Concerto and orchestral works.   Nimrod shares his insights about interpreting music for performers and conductors, the development of his compositional style and his views on creativity in general. Nimrod has an infectious energy in his enthusiasm for the pursuit of beauty.  Nimrod has exceptional parents, and you'll hear how they met, and we start with Nimrod's close relationship to his father the renowned painter Alec Borenstein.  You'll be hearing excerpts from a couple of recordings, with thanks to both SOMM recordings and Naxos; links to Nimrod Borenstein's compositions and recordings below This episode is also a captioned video on YouTube, and you can read the transcript at this link as well: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/nimrod-borenstein Nimrod Borenstein website, for his discography, compositions and current projects: https://www.nimrod-borenstein.com/recordings To support this series, please either buy me a coffee or shop at my merchandise store Newsletter sign-up Catalog of Episodes Timestamps: (00:00) Intro (03:27) father Alec Borenstein, sharing ideas about great art and creativity (10:44) Un moment de sérénité Shirim, op. 94, no. 5  performed by pianist Clélia Iruzun with thanks to SOMM recordings (13:24) the importance of contrast (15:06) importance of dynamics, notation, interpretation (18:04) evolution of Nimrod's compositions,  decision to give up career as a violin soloist  (22:37)Concertos (24:51) piano Etudes (30:11) Tango Etude. op. 66 No. 3 on the Naxos label with pianist Tra Nguyen (32:32) piano Etudes, first symphony (35:24) Chopin performed very little, Nimrod's decision to prioritize composition (36:41)decision to conduct (43:47) excerpt from the 3rd movement of the Borenstein Concerto for Piano and Orchestra op. 91, performed by Clélia Iruzun and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Nimrod Borenstein conductor (47:11) conducting, composition and interpretation (55:35)past episodes you may enjoy, different ways to support this series (56:20) English Chamber Orchestra 2025 collaboration Shakespeare Songs (57:16)how Vladimir Ashkenazy became a champion of Nimrod's compositions (01:06:38) evolution of Nimrod's compositional style, use of polyrhythms, finding his voice (01:24:09) excerpt from the 2nd movement of the Borenstein Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, op. 91, performed by Clélia Iruzun and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with Nimrod conducting. The music composed for video games has come a long way. Once limited to simple tunes generated by early synthesizer chips, it now encompasses complex musical scores written for full orchestra. Video game music is now also considered a key access point to orchestral music among young people, and concert venues around the world are seeing new and diverse audiences attend live performances of gaming soundtracks. This could a development the classical music world will seek to build upon. A study by League of of American Orchestras suggests audiences for concerts have dropped by 26% since 2020, with young people being the minority of attendees. But the genre's not always been embraced by classical music lovers. In this episode, we'll hear about the origins of music written for video games; speaking to composers and orchestras who are embracing new audiences and exciting musical works. And we'll go backstage before opening night of a concert tour showcasing music from a major video game franchise. In an in-depth interview, Devin Patrick Hughes speaks with former ITN journalist, ClassicFM host, and biographer John Suchet discusses his transition from journalism to classical music as a career because of his connection to Tchaikovsky's music. He shares his initial love for Tchaikovsky's melodies, developing an understanding of music through learning jazz trombone, and his eventual passion for writing about classical music composers. John touches upon Tchaikovsky's struggle with his identity and homosexuality, and how it influenced his symphonic works. Additionally, he considers the debate about Tchaikovsky's dubious death and the bizarre relationship that Tchaikovsky had with Nadezhda von Meck, his best-known patroness. John believes his approach to understanding music is through the man and not the music, and shares never before heard anecdotes about Tchaikovsky's relationships with other men.  00:00 Introduction and Early Life 00:16 Transition into Classical Music 00:34 Tchaikovsky's Early Musical Journey 01:49 Tchaikovsky's Career in Journalism 02:57 Tchaikovsky's Love for Classical Music 03:43 Tchaikovsky's Writing Career 04:13 Tchaikovsky's Love for Other Composers 05:47 Tchaikovsky's Self Doubt 08:13 Tchaikovsky's Struggles with Homosexuality 10:27 Tchaikovsky's Marriage and its Impact 11:57 Tchaikovsky's Influence and Legacy 28:28 Tchaikovsky's Death and its Controversy 38:47 Conclusion: Tchaikovsky's Enduring Impact As the host of The Classic FM Concert with John Suchet for 12 years, John Suchet is a household voice in classical music and broadcasting. "The question I had to ask myself was, 'Do you want to change who you are as a composer just so can match a particular sound that is in fashion or is expected of you in the concert hall world or do you want to say true to yourself as an artist?'" Time and time again, whenever this question pops up, it's always you turn towards yourself and ask yourself who you are and you stay true to who you are. You don't change your sound based on what is in vogue in the music world. Be true to yourself. Be the best version of yourself and don't try to be a second-rate version of anyone else."Christopher Tin is a two-time Grammy-winning composer of concert and media music. His music has been performed and premiered in many of the world's most prestigious venues: Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, the United Nations, and Carnegie Hall, where he had an entire concert devoted to his music. He has also been performed by ensembles diverse as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orkest, and US Air Force Band. His song "Baba Yetu", originally written for the video game Civilization IV, is a modern choral standard, and the first piece of music written for a video game ever to win a Grammy Award. His debut album, the multi-lingual song cycle Calling All Dawns, won him a second Grammy in 2011 for Best Classical Crossover Album, and his follow-up release The Drop That Contained the Sea debuted at #1 on Billboard's classical charts, and premiered to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. His third album To Shiver the Sky also debuted at #1, and was funded by a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that raised $221,415, smashing all previous classical music crowdfunding records. His fourth album, The Lost Birds, is a collaboration with acclaimed British vocal ensemble VOCES8 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023.Tin is signed to an exclusive record deal with Universal under their legendary Decca label, published by Concord and Boosey & Hawkes, and is a Yamaha artist. World-renowned pianist and composer Chad Lawson, in the past two years has been working to reshape the role that music plays in our daily lives, forging a powerful new pathway for healing. On his luminous new double album breathe, he expands on the extraordinary intentionality he first brought to his massively streamed 2020 effort You Finally Knew, transforming his decidedly modern take on classical music into a conduit for stillness, serenity, and self-reflection. Partly informed by his work as creator and host of the iHeartRadio Award-nominated podcast “Calm It Down” (where he guides listeners through techniques for breathing and meditation while tackling mental health subjects) breathe ultimately establishes Lawson as an essential new voice exploring the intersection of music and wellness—all while delivering an exquisitely crafted body of work whose melodic beauty transcends all genre boundaries. With his latest endeavors including undergoing certification to teach breathing techniques, Lawson has recently begun to integrate breathing exercises into his music and live performance. For Mental Health Awareness Month, he released breathe (guided breathwork edition), a new deluxe edition of his latest album which includes a series of guided breathwork tracks, with Lawson's soothing voice guiding listeners through simple techniques.  Co-produced by Lawson and London-based orchestrator Geoff Lawson, breathe came to life at the legendary Abbey Road Studios (the same facility where he recorded You Finally Knew, whose standout track “Stay” held steady in the top 25 on the Billboard Classical chart for 80 consecutive weeks). So while the album features guest appearances from cellist Peter Gregson, violinist Esther Yoo, and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, breathe embodies an understated elegance that allows a tremendous depth of feeling to shine through every moment. Lawson has been featured by CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, Forbes, GRAMMY.com, Financial Times, and many more. Connect with Chad: Website YouTube Instagram Facebook
