Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious. This episode is unusual, in that Sara Karloff is not a musician. She is the only daughter of Boris Karloff, star of many films but famously the 1931 adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.Sara will join composer Michael Shapiro in London on 25 October as his original score is performed in London together with a screening of Frankenstein: commissioned in 2001, it has been presented in over 75 sold-out productions worldwide. I travelled to Milan in November 2021 and the experience of hearing Michael's music while watching such a genre-defining and ground-breaking film from nearly a century ago was extraordinary.I chatted with Michael in October 2020, April 2021 and October 2024.The music I'm playing alongside my conversation with Sara Karloff is from Michael Shapiro's In the Light of the Sun, performed by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Stathis Karapanos (flute). I was fortunate in being in the studio when this was recorded.Enjoy Frankenstein and Michael Shapiro's score, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall.Get in touch to let me know what you think!Thank you for listening to Harmonious World. Bec and John pitched Justin on the idea of assigning them ANY album from across Elvis's entire discography, from any time or country, and the two of them would have to try to make the case that their pick is better than the other's, even if it may challenge them to do so. So Bec was assigned the #1 2016 UK album "The Wonder of You with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra," the sequel release to "If I Can Dream," which we have not covered on TCBCast before! Produced by Nick Patrick, Don Reedman and Priscilla Presley, same as the first volume, which Bec really liked, can she make the case that it's a strong listen - or was there are precipitous drop-off in experimentation in favor of an overly safe, commercial follow-up, featuring recognizable hits like "Suspicious Minds," "Kentucky Rain" and "Always On My Mind"? John, on the other hand, being an avid study of Elvis' gospel music, was assigned the 2018 album "Where No One Stands Alone," a #1-charting album from the US's Top Christian Albums, which John had never listened to before except for the title duet with album co-producer Lisa Marie Presley. Although original backing vocalists who worked with Elvis such as Darlene Love, Cissy Houston, Bill Baize, Terry Blackwood, Armond Morales, Ed Hill, Jim Murray, Larry Stickland and Donnie Sumner were brought back to add authenticity to the project, the new arrangements by producer Andy Childs reflected contemporary changes in the field of American gospel music that when applied to Elvis' songs... well, let's say John will have his work cut out for him making a strong case for it being the better record. (Note from Justin: "Where No One Stands Alone" had been briefly reviewed at release on a very early episode of TCBCast, which Gurdip & I would probably re-evaluate our opinions from as well with hindsight.) For Song of the Week, John takes the opportunity of just having passed Easter to reflect on Elvis' interpretation of Shirl Milete's "Life," which was released as a single in 1971, and explores how its "Christianity-by-New-Age" approach may have resonated with Elvis' spiritual perspective on life, love and creativity. Then Bec digs into Pomus-Shuman's "Night Rider," featured on both the Pot Luck album and in the film "Tickle Me," highlighting its eerie lyrics despite its deceptively upbeat arrangement. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

I am reluctant to post much of anything about the current armed conflict in Gaza. As the saying goes, the first casualty in war is the truth, and the truth of this saying is manifest in Gaza. It is almost impossible to separate information from information operations by either side. The International Committee of the Red Cross cites allegations of grave beaches of the law of war by both sides. In previous episodes I described how war crimes make reaching peace even more difficult than it usually is. Nonetheless, if achieving peace seems insurmountable, a cease fire leading to non-kinetic conflict resolution may be possible if we listen and put pressure on each sides stated war aims.   These podcasts do not necessarily represent the views of the Department of Defense, the Army War College, or any other organization I am associated with     Music Liszt, F. and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Totentanz, https://download.stream.publicradio.org/podcast/minnesota/classical/programs/free-downloads/2020/10/27/daily_download_20201027_128.mp3?listeningSessionID=0CD_382_200__6cca22efd3d270af449f392040641d0331631df3 Copland, A. & United States Marine Band. I thought this joint needed some classing up.   So, settle in and get ready to hear the man who is said to have set music free in Volume 227: Beethoven's 4th & 5th.   For more information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it.    Here is the promised Leonard Bernstein video.    Credits and copyrights   Beethoven, René Leibowitz, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Beecham Choral Society – The Nine Symphonies Of Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven Label: Reader's Digest – RD 4-6 Format: 7 x Vinyl, LP Box Set Released: 1966 Genre: Classical Style: Romantic, Choral   This is record 3 of a 6 record set. Well, well, well. This week returns us to Midnight, but this time with Lombardo space marines on a search and recovery mission to a diamond mine that has gone silent. Another interesting future-tech gadget from the mind of RTD, with the TARDIS cracking the spacesuit selection for Belinda and the Doctor. But overall, David thought the Doctor's thinking and planning was sloppy and Ben thought the story was a bit choppy. Opening music is "Diamonds are Forever" composed and conducted by John Barry with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Closing music is a 1935 recording from Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians, "I'm Just an Ordinary Human". We recorded this episode on 29 April 2025.

Interpreten: Liya Petrova, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Duncan Ward, Alexandre KantorowLabel: MirareEAN: 3760127226918Virtuose Geigenliteratur hat es diese Woche wieder zu besonderen Ehren auf radio klassik Stephansdom gebracht. Die neue CD Momentum 2 von Liya Petrova hat Michael Gmasz überzeugt! Was er daran so herausragend findet? Lesen Sie selbst! GHOST MUSIC finds the fictional Orchestra of London beset by difficulties. Zimetski, their fiery Polish conductor, drives musicians simultaneously to greater performances and personal desperation, while Pete, the orchestral manager, attempts damage control. William Mellor, a cellist, buys an antique cello at auction only to discover that it has supernatural qualities. A mysterious young woman then joins the orchestra, captivates the conductor and attempts to captivate William, who's struggling to get back together with his estranged wife. In the end, no force, whether earthly or otherwise, can keep William from confronting the cello's true nature – as well as his own. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alice McVeigh has been published by Orion/Hachette in contemporary fiction, by UK's Unbound using a pen name in scifi, and now in multi-award-winning Austenesque fiction. (mg)

Nimrod Borenstein is a brilliant composer, who was a child prodigy as both a composer and performer. His often complex music is beloved by performers and audiences alike, and has been widely recorded and performed internationally. He is also a renowned conductor, and he spoke to me about his difficult decision to cut short his career as a violin soloist in order to find alternate career options as he developed his career as a composer. Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active champion of Nimrod's music, and you'll hear the charming story of their first meeting.  Ashkenazy first conducted Borenstein's orchestral work The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe op. 52 to great acclaim, and the Chandos label released a very successful album devoted to Borenstein's music conducted by Ashkenazy featuring his Violin Concerto and orchestral works.   Nimrod shares his insights about interpreting music for performers and conductors, the development of his compositional style and his views on creativity in general. The music composed for video games has come a long way. Once limited to simple tunes generated by early synthesizer chips, it now encompasses complex musical scores written for full orchestra. Video game music is now also considered a key access point to orchestral music among young people, and concert venues around the world are seeing new and diverse audiences attend live performances of gaming soundtracks. This could a development the classical music world will seek to build upon. A study by League of of American Orchestras suggests audiences for concerts have dropped by 26% since 2020, with young people being the minority of attendees. But the genre's not always been embraced by classical music lovers. In this episode, we'll hear about the origins of music written for video games; speaking to composers and orchestras who are embracing new audiences and exciting musical works. And we'll go backstage before opening night of a concert tour showcasing music from a major video game franchise.
