The Research Lead with Agri-Food Economic Systems suggests with Canadian oilseeds under increasing trade pressure, an oilseed strategy could be helpful. An Independent Agri-Food Policy Note and accompanying Policy Concepts Paper, released by Agri-Food Economic Systems, examined the pressures facing Canadian oilseeds including China's 100 per cent tariff on canola oil and canola meal, trade action on Canadian peas from China, and now India - and issues with China and the U.S. over soybeans.Research lead Dr. Al Mussell says Canadian oilseed producers are extremely export dependent but that's not a bad thing. The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) have sent a letter to the provincial government, laying out their views on Saskatchewan farmland ownership. The numbers are brutal and they're hitting New Mexico families right now: average health insurance premiums jumping more than 35%, with some silver plans spiking over 50%. We unpack why rates are soaring, how subsidy design can unintentionally reward insurers, and why middle-income families often get hammered despite “help.” From malpractice pressures to physician shortages and thin competition, we connect the policy dots that quietly decide what you pay and what care you actually get.Safety takes center stage next. A new ranking labels New Mexico the most dangerous state for solo travelers, a gut punch to a tourism economy that depends on trust. We talk candidly about violent crime, the day-to-day realities for residents and visitors, and how enforcement, sentencing, and services either reinforce stability or erode it. That tension shows up in Bernalillo County's anti-ICE ordinance debate and in the Albuquerque mayor's race, where a controversial ad drew sharp pushback from police. When politics turns officers into villains or reframes violent-offender removals as fear campaigns, the public loses clarity—and safety. We close with kids and the attention economy. Drawing on Jonathan Haidt's work, we explore how adolescence migrated to smartphones and TikTok, why teen girls and boys are affected differently, and what parents can do right now to restore structure: later phones, device-free nights, shared screen spaces, real jobs, and faith or community anchors. The through-line is simple: policy and design choices matter. Health costs, crime trends, and youth mental health don't fix themselves; they respond to incentives, accountability, and honest leadership. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review. Marten Lodewijks considers the reasons for falling global alcohol consumption, noting that people are drinking less often and drinking less when they do. “Participation rate amongst Gen Z has been trending upwards for the past few years,” he notes, saying that maybe the generation is “late to the party” because of Covid-19 and economic pressures. He also discusses how Gen Z has more options for drinks and they approach consumption in a different way.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Options involve risks and are not suitable for all investors. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for November 14, 2025. 0:30 We dig into a surprising new analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco that challenges decades of economic dogma. For nearly a century, experts have insisted that tariffs raise prices and cripple economies—but a 150-year review of data from the U.S., UK, and France shows the opposite. We break down how tariffs can lower prices, strengthen domestic manufacturing, reduce foreign dependency, and expose the myths that fueled the rise of global competitors like China. And we look at how new trade deals and shifting economic power are reshaping American industry in real time. 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. The Prosecution against President Trump from Georgia will move forward with Peter Skandalakis as the prosecutor. California Congressman Eric Swalwell, who previously was accused of having an affair with a Chinese spy, is now accused of falsifying loans. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine announced this week he won't be seeking reelection to Congress. 12:30 Get Performlyte from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 13:30 We break down the debate over H-1B visas, fraud in the system, and the growing rift inside the Republican Party over immigration and specialized labor. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s proposal to cap visas and crack down on abuse faces pushback after President Trump argues that certain specialized skills simply don’t exist in sufficient numbers here at home. We explore why most H-1B visas aren’t going to top-tier engineers, how major tech and outsourcing firms have become the biggest beneficiaries, and why national security concerns are now shaping the conversation about who should—or shouldn’t—be filling America’s most sensitive industrial and defense roles. 16:00 American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson react to the backlash surrounding Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, Christie—a biopic about 1990s boxer Christy Martin—and why the movie world has turned on one of its brightest young stars. Despite keeping her politics private, Sweeney has been labeled “problematic” after reports surfaced that she’s a registered Republican. Now, after the film’s disappointing box office debut, some in the industry are blaming her for its performance. We explore the double standard in Hollywood—how major flops from firmly left-leaning stars barely make a ripple, while Sweeney’s misstep draws vitriol from actors like Ruby Rose. We also highlight Christy Martin’s heartfelt defense of Sweeney, pushing back against claims that she “ruined” the film. If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 22:00 We break down the economic pressures shaping young voters—and how those frustrations helped propel Zoran Mamdani to victory in New York City. We examine the growing resentment around rent, wages, and soaring personal debt, including the staggering $1.2 trillion in U.S. credit card balances. 24:30 We Dig Deep into a new Gallup report showing one of the sharpest drops in religiosity anywhere in the world—and what that means for America’s future. We break down the 17-point decline in Americans who say faith is an important part of daily life, and why the Founders believed a moral and religious people were essential to preserving freedom. We look at how this vacuum of belief is being filled—not by God, but by government. From New York City’s Zoran Mamdani declaring that no problem is too big for government to solve, to the rise of political and ideological substitutes for religion, misplaced faith in bureaucracy threatens liberty itself. 31:30 Get Prodovite Plus from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 32:00 We break down a sprawling, mob-linked sports betting ring that stretched across college campuses and pulled in student-athletes. We discuss how the explosion of legalized sports gambling, combined with the massive money flowing through today’s NIL era, has created fertile ground for corruption and chaos. From point-shaving schemes to young athletes being pressured by organized crime, we look at how institutions once built on discipline and merit have drifted into moral relativism and cash-driven incentives. And as New Jersey authorities uncover a multi-million-dollar criminal pipeline tied to college programs, the warning signs are getting harder to ignore. 35:00 Plus, it's Fake News Friday! We're putting you to the test with our weekly game of headlines—are they real news, fake news, or really fake news? From TSA bonuses and collapsing bridges, to chart-topping AI-generated music, Tiktok scandals, and even Tucker Carlson's interview with Bigfoot, can you spot the fake news? Play along, keep score, and share your results with us on Facebook page: facebook.com/AmericanGroundRadio. 39:00 We take a look at the Democratic National Committee’s latest internal drama: staffers being ordered back to the office after years of remote work. Long-distance governing may have contributed to the party’s recent missteps, but they aren't too happy about returning to the office and we're saying, "Whoa." 41: And we finish off with a young man with integrity. After turning in some lost cash, he was rewarded with a job. The salient point of our discussion centers on the nuanced dichotomy within the furniture market, where a reported year-over-year sales increase of 4.9% in October belies a troubling decline in actual transaction volume, which fell by 6.1%. This phenomenon indicates that the growth is largely attributable to escalated prices rather than an uptick in consumer purchasing activity, a situation exacerbated by tariff impositions and inflationary pressures that weigh heavily on the industry. We also delve into notable corporate developments, such as J and K Home Furnishings' strategic acquisition of Infinger Furniture, which not only signifies market expansion but also emphasizes a commitment to sustainability through substantial renovations aimed at achieving a 93% eco-friendly operation. Furthermore, we examine the evolving landscape of supply chain dynamics, particularly the significant reductions in global container freight rates, juxtaposed against rising costs on transcontinental routes. Lastly, we address pressing consumer safety issues arising from recalls in the sector, underscoring the imperative for manufacturers to adhere rigorously to safety standards to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children. The intricate landscape of the furniture industry is currently experiencing a confluence of growth and challenge, as evidenced by the latest data released by Fiserv. The reported 4.9% increase in sales at furniture stores for October paints a picture of burgeoning market vitality. However, a more granular examination reveals a disconcerting 6.1% decline in actual transaction volumes, indicating that the sales surge is not a result of increased consumer activity, but rather a consequence of elevated prices driven by ongoing tariffs and inflationary pressures. This dichotomy prompts a critical reflection on the sustainability of such growth amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainty, highlighting the need for industry stakeholders to recalibrate their strategies in response to these evolving market dynamics. In a significant corporate development, J and K Home Furnishings has strategically acquired Infinger Furniture, a well-established retailer in South Carolina, thereby expanding its market presence into the Charleston area. This acquisition is not merely a transactional event; it represents a broader strategic initiative aimed at enhancing operational efficiencies and embracing sustainability within the retail framework. J and K's ambitious plans for a comprehensive remodel of the Infinger location, including the installation of solar panels and a commitment to achieving a 93% green certification, exemplify a forward-thinking approach that aligns with contemporary consumer values surrounding environmental responsibility. Furthermore, the establishment of a local warehouse is poised to streamline logistics and improve service delivery, thereby positioning the company favorably within a competitive marketplace. As the discussion progresses to supply chain dynamics, the podcast elucidates the recent downward trend in global container freight rates, particularly a notable 15% drop for shipments from Shanghai to New York. This decline can be largely attributed to the completion of pre-holiday import activities by U.S. retailers, resulting in diminished demand for container space. In stark contrast, rising shipping costs on Asia-Europe routes signal the complexities and variances inherent in global logistics. Such fluctuations necessitate agility and foresight from retailers as they navigate the evolving landscape of supply chain management. The podcast also brings to light critical consumer safety concerns, particularly regarding the significant recalls of non-compliant clothing storage units, which underscores the imperative for manufacturers to adhere to safety regulations. The convergence of these themes ultimately reinforces the necessity for industry vigilance and adaptability in...

Some stories begin with a single alarm bell. This one begins with dozens of small ones—nonprofit leaders quietly signaling the same thing at the same time: the ground under them was shifting, and shifting fast. Because the France-Merrick Foundation funds discrete, one-time capital projects across Baltimore, they hear from an unusually wide cross-section of organizations. And in early 2025, all those cross-currents pointed in the same direction: instability, delays, burnout, and a crisis arriving faster than anyone had planned for.France-Merrick chose to act. In this conversation, Amy Gross walks Carrie through how her foundation made the rare choice to increase its payout and launch the Meet the Moment Fund, dedicating 40% of their annual giving to rapid-response support. The board shifted from quarterly to monthly meetings. The application process was streamlined to a single stage. And the goal was simple: respond before inaction made the moment worse.Along the way, Amy offers a window into the larger questions philanthropy is wrestling with this year—how nonprofits survive when government contracts become unpredictable, why earned revenue has gone from “nice to have” to essential, and what it means for funders to collaborate when the sector is feeling squeezed from all sides. Her own hope rises and falls with the day's news, she admits, yet intention and community remain steady guides. This episode makes a perfect connection to this season's theme of hellos, goodbyes, and the space between. Amy's answers—focused on connection, recognition, and leaving behind an impact that outlives her—echo the very principles her foundation brought to its decision: see people clearly, respond with purpose, and do the most good you can with the moment you're given. "2025 has been a pretty interesting year for the auto industry," says Kevin Roberts with CarGurus. He has a particular interest in the used car market, noticing a rise in vehicle sales under $30,000 and/or with cars seven years or older. Kevin sees similar trends in the EV space after the Trump administration axed the EV tax credits. With interest rates remaining high and new vehicle prices increasing, he says it's critical a middle ground forms to draw prospective car buyers toward new vehicles.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. AI infrastructure spending is rapidly increasing, with major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon projected to invest over $300 billion by the end of 2025. This surge is primarily driven by the demand for data centers and GPU capacity to support artificial intelligence initiatives. While the Federal Reserve indicates that current investments differ from the dot-com boom due to stronger earnings among leading firms, analysts caution that excessive debt-fueled expansion could pose risks if AI does not deliver the anticipated returns. The insurance sector is particularly optimistic, with 67% of CEOs expecting returns on AI investments within three years, a significant increase from 20% the previous year.Alphabet reported a quarterly revenue of $102.35 billion, exceeding expectations, with a notable 34% growth in cloud revenue. Amazon's cloud division, AWS, also showed resilience, generating $33 billion in net sales despite a global outage. Microsoft reported $49 billion in cloud revenue, with Azure experiencing a 40% year-over-year growth. However, Microsoft faced challenges with capacity shortages, which could limit revenue potential. Additionally, OpenAI reported a net loss of $11.5 billion, impacting Microsoft's financials due to its significant investment in the AI company. In the small business sector, sales transactions increased by 8% in the third quarter of 2025, although owner confidence has declined due to inflation and rising operational costs. Many small business owners are motivated to sell before conditions worsen, with a notable number of buyers identified as corporate refugees seeking stability in essential service sectors. This trend presents an opportunity for IT providers to offer tailored technology solutions to these new business owners, who may lack expertise in setting up necessary systems. For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT service leaders, the current environment presents both challenges and opportunities. As AI drives infrastructure upgrades, providers must help clients navigate the complexities of AI investments, ensuring they understand when AI initiatives are financially viable versus when they may be overhyped. Additionally, the increase in small business sales indicates a demand for reliable technology setups, providing MSPs with a chance to offer essential services that facilitate smoother transitions for new business owners. This Day in Legal History: Volstead ActOn October 28, 1919, the Volstead Act was passed by the U.S. Congress over President Woodrow Wilson's veto, laying the legal foundation for Prohibition in the United States. Formally titled the National Prohibition Act, the law was intended to provide for the enforcement of the 18th Amendment, which had been ratified earlier that year and prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors. The Volstead Act, named after Representative Andrew Volstead of Minnesota who introduced it, defined what constituted “intoxicating liquors”—a key point of contention. It set the threshold at anything containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume, thereby banning even beer and wine, which many Americans had not expected to be included. The law also outlined penalties and enforcement mechanisms, giving the federal government new policing powers.Prohibition officially began in January 1920, sparking a surge in bootlegging, speakeasies, and organized crime. While intended to curb alcohol consumption and related social problems, the law instead fueled a vast illicit economy. Enforcement proved difficult and inconsistent, and public support for Prohibition declined steadily throughout the 1920s.The Volstead Act remained in effect until the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition in 1933, marking the only time a constitutional amendment has been entirely undone by a subsequent amendment. The legacy of the Volstead Act lingers in ongoing debates about federal regulation, moral legislation, and the limits of enforcement. In a push to speed up electricity access for the fast-growing data center sector, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has directed federal energy regulators to consider a rule that would streamline how new projects connect to the electric grid. The proposed rule, sent to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), would allow customers to file combined requests for both energy demand and generation at the same site—cutting study times and costs. Wright also asked FERC to explore completing grid project reviews within 60 days, a sharp departure from the years-long timelines currently common. This move comes as U.S. power demand rises sharply, largely due to artificial intelligence workloads, prompting the Trump administration to seek expanded capacity, particularly from fossil fuel and nuclear sources. Though the Energy Secretary cannot compel FERC to act, the Republican-led commission will now weigh the proposals. Industry groups like the Edison Electric Institute praised the initiative as a necessary step to stay competitive, while environmental advocates criticized the fast-tracked timelines as reckless, especially during a government shutdown.Wright also urged FERC to ease the permitting process for hydroelectric development, drawing praise from the hydropower industry, which sees regulatory delays as a major barrier to growth. The proposals reflect the administration's strategy to meet surging energy demand quickly, though they raise concerns about environmental oversight and procedural rigor.US pushes regulators on connecting data centers to grid | ReutersTexas's new Business Court, launched in September 2024 across five major cities, is quickly becoming a boon for law firms, attracting a wave of high-stakes commercial litigation and prompting staffing increases. Major firms like Jackson Walker, Norton Rose Fulbright, and Baker Botts are leading the charge, with over 220 cases already filed—far exceeding early expectations. The court, designed to compete with Delaware's Court of Chancery and bolster Texas's business-friendly reputation, is drawing interest from corporate giants like AT&T, BP, and Exxon Mobil.Lawyers are treating the venue as a prestige arena for complex business disputes, and firms are responding by hiring, publishing guides, and producing media content to market their expertise. For example, Norton Rose launched a video series on court developments, while Haynes Boone created an internal task force to track rule changes. The court's promise of faster timelines—often under 18 months compared to multi-year waits in traditional courts—is one of its major selling points. Judges are aiming to build out a body of corporate case law to make Texas a viable alternative to Delaware for resolving business disputes. Despite no trials yet, over three dozen cases are jury-bound in the next year, signaling strong demand. The court's rapid rise suggests it could reshape where and how major commercial litigation happens in the U.S.Law Firms Join Early Winners in ‘Very Hot' Texas Business CourtThe head of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the largest federal worker union, is urging Senate Democrats to help end the nearly month-long government shutdown—the second longest in U.S. history. AFGE President Everett Kelley called for an immediate reopening of the government through a “clean” short-term funding bill, aligning with a version passed by the Republican-controlled House in September.Democrats have resisted that approach, instead demanding that Republicans first agree to renew subsidies for Obamacare insurance plans. Kelley's statement increases pressure on Democrats, as federal employees begin to feel the financial strain—many missed their first full paycheck last week, and essential services like food aid and air traffic control are being impacted.Kelley also called for guaranteed back pay for all affected workers and urged bipartisan efforts to fix the broken appropriations process and address rising costs. A senior Senate GOP aide noted the union's position might signal a turning point in negotiations, potentially encouraging Democrats to reconsider the short-term funding route.Federal Worker Union Calls to End Shutdown, Pressuring DemocratsMy column for Bloomberg this week looks at Italy's decision to raise its flat tax on wealthy foreign residents—a move that reflects the unsustainability of luring the rich with short-term tax deals. Italy isn't backtracking because its plan failed outright; it's doing so because it succeeded just long enough to paper over a deeper revenue gap. The original policy, a 100,000-euro annual payment to exempt new wealthy residents from foreign income taxes, was a bold but limited solution that boosted luxury markets without delivering long-term fiscal stability. Now, Italy is bumping that fee up to 300,000 euros by 2026 to keep the scheme afloat. That's a warning for the U.S., where the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act followed a similar path—offering generous upfront tax cuts to high earners with no lasting funding mechanism. Rather than building resilience into the tax system, both countries are layering short-term relief on top of structural deficits, leaving future policymakers to scramble for temporary fixes. I argue for automatic sunset provisions that scale back preferential tax treatment when equity or revenue metrics worsen, allowing tax codes to serve as stabilizers instead of giveaways. Metrics like tax revenue as a share of GDP or the Gini coefficient could trigger phaseouts without requiring political intervention.Italy's flat tax is a case study in what happens when fiscal policy becomes a subscription model for the wealthy: the price keeps going up, and the returns diminish. The U.S. is running a version of the same play, just with fewer disclosures and rosier assumptions. This is a public episode.
