13.8 Billion Years Ago to NOW In our last couple +1s, we talked about the Sun and the next-closest star, appropriately named Proxima Centauri. We did some quick math and realized that the Universe is insanely vast (yes, that's the technical description) and that 99.999% of the Universe consists of… ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Imagining the ineffable VASTNESS of our Universe should help us get a little perspective on our lives. Today I want to chat about just how OLD the Earth and the Sun and our Universe are. Why? In addition to being a fascinating intellectual exercise, it is, as Michael Singer points out in Living Untethered, an equally powerful SPIRITUAL exercise. So… Do you know how long ago the Universe was created? Somehow, scientists are able to peg the number at around 13.8 BILLION years ago. Think about that. Out of nothing came something. 13.8 BILLION YEARS AGO. My brain just exploded. !! Now… Next question. Do you know how old the Earth and the Sun are? The Sun is estimated to be 4.603 billion years old. The Earth is estimated to be about 4.543 billion years old—plus or minus about 50 million years. (Hah.) (God bless whoever did that math!) Now… Here's a follow-up question… What was happening during that 9 BILLION YEAR lag between the inception of the Universe and the creation of our solar system? Think about THAT for a moment as well. My brain just exploded again. !! Then, after a BILLION years, the first single-cell organism appeared on Earth about 3.5 BILLION years ago. Then it took another 3.25 BILLION years for dinosaurs to appear around 250 million years ago. Fast forward another quarter of a billion years and, a couple/few hundred thousand years ago depending on whose math you want to believe, early humans showed up. And… As Singer says, all of that led to your great-great-great-great grandmother meeting your great-great-great-great grandfather all of which led to EVERY SINGLE THING that had to happen EXACTLY THE WAY IT HAPPENED for the miracle that is YOU to come alive. And… Yet… In spite of the sheer miraculousness of every single moment that had to happen EXACTLY the way it happened for you to be here today… You complain about what's happening right now. As Singer says, that's so absurd it's almost funny. And that's the starting point of his philosophy. Quit arguing with reality. It's bigger than you and me. It's been around longer than you and me. It will beat you and me in an argument EVERY SINGLE TIME. We need to “surrender” to reality. We need to accept it completely. Not with foolish resentment and/or petty frustration. We need to RADICALLY accept reality as Phil Stutz would say. We need to LOVE what is, as Byron Katie would put it. This moment, with all its apparent imperfections, is a sacred gift. Let's accept it. Let's bless it. Then let's shake our heads in awe as we smile and go do what needs to get done. +1. +1. +1. All day. Every day. ESPECIALLY… Today.

When planning your retirement journey it is imperative that you fully explore and understand the options available. On this episode of Retirement Answer Man, Shane asks about the best ways to access his retirement accounts early. Taylor Schulte from Define Financial joins me in the listener questions segment to discuss Shane's question by clarifying the rule of 55 and 72(t), the ups and downs of using his fiduciary to prepare Jay's taxes, and how to fund the first 5 years of retirement. Don't miss out on the answers to questions from listeners like you. Tune in to hear if Taylor's response matches my own. Accept where you are now “We must be willing to give up the life that we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”--Joseph Campbell It is easy to look back with wonder at the plans you had for your life. Even if everything is going well, we've all had life plans that were interrupted by curveballs. While those curveballs can throw us off course, it's important to understand and acknowledge where we are now. Rather than ignoring or avoiding your present situation, accept your situation the way it is. Radical acceptance is fully accepting things as they are now. Only when you fully accept what your current reality is can you look forward to creating a fantastic life ahead. Recognize where you are starting from so that you can plan to rock retirement. What is the rule of 55? Shane is currently planning to work until age 55. He would like to use the rule of 55 to access his 401K. The rule of 55 is an IRS provision that allows workers who leave their current job to start taking penalty-free distributions from their current employer's retirement plan upon reaching age 55. Note that the rule of 55 does not apply to IRA accounts. It is only to be used for 401Ks. So if you think you may want to use the rule of 55, then you'll want to make sure that you don't roll this account over to a Roth IRA. Although this provision seems cut and dry, there are a couple of things to look out for. First, you'll want to be clear about whether your employer will allow you to use the rule of 55 for your 401K. Next, you'll need to see whether the employer will allow you to withdraw the funds on a partial basis so that you don't have to entirely deplete the account. Lastly, you should note that the current tax filing rate for the rule of 55 is at 20%. The ins and outs of using 72(t) for qualified accounts Shane's backup plan in case he gets laid off is to use 72(t). Similar to the rule of 55, 72(t) allows workers to gain early access to their 401K or 403B without penalty. Typically 401K contributors cannot access their retirement savings before age 59.5 without penalty. However, the rule of 72(t) allows for 5 equally periodic penalty-free payments. These payments must be made according to the schedule laid out by the IRS. It is essential that the account holder not add or withdraw anything more during this time period. Using the 72(t) rule is tricky and it is critical that you carefully abide by the IRS's rules. Listen in to hear a tip on what you could do if you only want to access part of the funds in your 401K using rule 72(t). This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Colima Salt. There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing, yet as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, a fact that comes with serious consequences. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance, rejuvenate internal organs, halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease, and even straighten scoliotic spines. On today's mini-episode, Dhru sits down with James Nestor to talk about the forgotten power of breathing and how we can tap into it to dramatically improve how we feel. James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, the New York Times, and more. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, which explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly—and how to get it back. James has appeared on dozens of national television shows, including ABC's Nightline and CBS's Morning News and on NPR. He lives and breathes in San Francisco. In this episode we dive into: -How the way we breathe influences our health -The Stanford University breathing experiment-How our modern industrial diet has impacted the way we breathe -The connection between lung capacity and longevity -How to establish better nasal breathing -The importance of eliciting a parasympathetic response before you eat Listen to the full episode here. The “radical” early church we often hear about is really just radically devoted to the normal rhythms of Christian life. You don't have to actually be radical to be a radical church in 2022. You just have to be radically devoted to a few routine things. Part of our "Acts: Boldness and Power" series. Acts 2:42-47. Preached by Jared Kress on October 23rd, 2022.
This Real Life Theology conversation with Renée Sproles is inspired by Rosaria Butterfield's book "The Gospel Comes with a House Key: Practicing Radically Ordinary Hospitality in Our Post-Christian World." The discussion centers on how hospitality has changed lives and communities. She is joined by her friends Bonnie Blaylock, Bobbie Solley, and Cheyana Avilla.
Today I talked to Jim Wilson about his book (co-authored with Paul Daugherty) Radically Human: How New Technology Is Transforming Business and Shaping Our Future (HBR Press, 2022). Technology has evolved from device intelligence to data intelligence (big data) to now the new stage of a more human-centric approach where the user/worker's needs, wants and biases are being taken into account to make technology easier to deploy and more of an equal partner. That's the progression Jim Wilson champions in this book and on-air conversation. Covid-19 ushered in not only a host of human behavior changes, e.g., hybrid work arrangements and the Great Resignation, the pandemic also spurred the Great Acceleration as companies rushed to adopt technology that will transform their business practices. How to do so in a way that will democratize technology, empowering employees and rewarding customers along the way, is the challenge that Wilson addresses here. After all, technology innovations that don't also safeguard and enhance trust will instead create “algorithm aversion,” and undercut the promise of how technology can benefit companies, societies and individuals alike. Jim Wilson is the Managing Director of Thought Leadership & Technology Research at Accenture Research. Jim speaks to business audiences worldwide, is a long-time contributor to the Harvard Business Review and has been cited as one of the top 50 Business Innovators by CODEX. With Yoda and Laird In our last +1, we revisited our thinking on our Targeted Thinking practice. As you may recall, we added a Step 0 to the protocol that involved accepting our reality COMPLETELY before we shift to figuring out how we'd like to create a better reality and what, specifically, we will do RIGHT NOW to create it. Today I want to chat more about acceptance. We'll bring my Yoda, Phil Stutz, back to the party to tap into more of his near-infinite wisdom. Btw. Phil and I have been working together for nearly six years now. It's remarkable to me just how deep we can go these days as I have fun truly practicing my and our philosophy at deeper and deeper levels. Btw2. The reason I'm able to practice even more deeply is because I have taken on bigger and bigger challenges—as Phil says, I'm dealing with “real bullets” now. And, as another dear friend and mentor (Matt McCall!) puts it: I'm officially working out in “the big boy gym.” (Lifting Real Weights vs. Styrofoam Weights for the win, folks!!) Now… Phil doesn't tell us to just *accept* reality. He tells us that we need to RADICALLY accept reality. One of the metaphors he likes to use is to imagine that you're a surfer. When you're surfing, you have ZERO control of when and how the waves show up. (Right?) But… You have pretty much COMPLETE control over how you choose to respond to any given wave. (Right?) That's Part 1 of this +1. The wise, eudaimonic surfer embraces that fact. How? By not complaining about the waves. They are what they are. And, the wise life-surfer knows that the waves, when viewed properly, are what make the whole experience FUN!! No waves, no fun. Now for Part 2. Question time… Two parts to the question. First, if you're REALLY committed to becoming a REALLY great (!!!) surfer, do you go to the beaches with the tiniest waves? Or… Do you find the beaches with the right-sized big waves to have the most fun challenging yourself with your current level of skill? Note: Finding the right-size waves is an important distinction that's part of a longer chat. We want to make sure we find our flow channel—not too little or too much stress or we'll be bored or anxious! (Superyou for the win!) Second, when you arrive at the beach and swim out to start catching the right-sized (appropriately big!) waves, do you COMPLAIN when a big wave approaches or do you smile and get after it, seeing just how well you can ride it while—very importantly—ENJOYING the thrill of the experience?? Of course, unless you're crazy, you ENJOY those (appropriately) big waves. That's the whole reason you showed up at the beach in the first place, right?! And THAT is how we want to approach our lives and all the inherent “waves”/challenges that show up on our heroic quests. Friendly reminder: THIS IS WHAT WE'VE TRAINED FOR, HERO!! So… Got any waves in your life right now? Awesome. Surf's up. Let's go get it as we enjoy the ride!!! +1 +1 +1
Stephen Heuer joins us from Synergistic Nutrition to talk about how to prevent cancer and how oxygen plays a dynamic role in preventing cancer. Stephen is a nutritionist and has been practicing nutrition since 1990 and helping people regain their health. We talked about how seed oils help to open the cellular membrane of the cells to deliver oxygen so the cell becomes aerobic instead of anaerobic. When a cell becomes anaerobic its energy doesn't come from oxygen. This is the case with fungus, cancer tumor cells, yeast and mold. These things don't need oxygen to survive or grow. When you can get oxygen to the center of the cell, then the cell metabolizes oxygen properly and the body is healthy. When the cell start using sugar as fuel instead of oxygen, the disease process has begun. None of us want to be in that boat. So today we talked about seed oils and how most oils on the market today are pressed using hexane extraction processes that expose the delicate oils to high pressure and very high heat. This heat and pressure destroys the carbon chain bonds and molecular structures of the medicine. Not only that but secondary metabolites and compound alkaloids also get denatured, pulled apart and destroyed in the process. We need these enzymes to work in their original raw state. When the oils are not rancid they can help deliver oxygen to the mitochondria of the cells, improve ATP energy production and much more. If your Instagram feed or Explore page looks anything like mine, then you likely see a preponderance of posts about personality types, conditions, or other self-knowledge. We're hooked on learning about ourselves! And perhaps even more hooked on sharing what we've learned—which means that the Instagram algorithm (as well as TikTok's and Pinterest's algorithms) has learned to love this kind of content, too.In this episode, I explore discovering ourselves versus making ourselves, why self-knowledge is big business on Instagram, and how creating viral personality content can wreak havoc on the creator's psyche. About The Little Way of LIving with Less by Laraine Bennett From the publisher, Sophia Institute Press website: https://www.sophiainstitute.com/products/item/the-little-way-of-living-with-less Do your possessions “spark joy”? In our materialistic society, we are often plagued with the slow torture of accumulated stuff, which creates disharmony, prevents us from living in the present moment, and keeps us from setting our eyes upon Heaven. The Little Way of Living with Less is a spiritual journey guided by St. Thérèse of Lisieux toward a “less is more” manner of living. It shares one couple's effort to downsize, declutter, and detach — and the challenge of growing in virtues that is associated with this process. Indeed, this book serves as a practical antidote to the consumerism and commodification of daily home life today. Through the words and example of the Little Flower, you will find peace, joy, and security as you learn how to overcome disorder — whether physical, mental, or spiritual. St. Thérèse will help form you in single-mindedness to complete the ordinary with extraordinary, selfless love, and you'll soon find yourself becoming intentional about making God the center of your life and your home. Best of all, you will discover that “everything is grace” (St. Thérèse) and will begin thanking God for your many blessings and experiencing His miraculous favors with greater mindfulness. Inspired by the Little Way, you will more confidently seek the things above and “choose all” in holiness. Let “the greatest saint of modern times” show you how to: Let go of clutter, unhealthy habits, vices, and sin Simplify your life and manage fear and anxiety Create order, beauty, and vibrancy in your home Detach from the world, cultivate poverty of spirit, and attain Heaven Find the happiness and gratitude that come from within Become humble and small, trusting in the mercy of God By living an integrated life that is free of materialistic pleasures, you will develop the freedom of a child of God to abandon yourself to the Father's will. Enter into the Heart of Jesus and make room in your heart to experience the wonders of His love! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support
This week we're covering the artists behind the official White House portraits, the artist and singer-songwriter Issy Wood, enslaved pottery artists, and American outsider artist Nellie Mae Rowe. Official Obama Portraits Unveiled at the White House The White House held a ceremony to unveil the official portraits of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Better late than never, right? Artist Robert McCurdy painted the official portrait of President Obama. He tells his subjects not to smile and to look directly into the camera to capture a transcendental moment. Michelle Obama selected artist Sharon Sprung. Mrs. Obama's statement about how a girl like her was never meant to be in the White House is inspiring. For more information on the Smithsonian portraits, check out podcast episode 127, Rise of the Black Portrait Artist Portrait Artist Sharon Sprung The identity of the presidential portrait artists is top secret, and it's usually revealed about a year after a former president leaves office. Sharon Sprung painted the official portrait of first lady Michelle Obama. Although she completed it in 9 months, she had to keep the portrait and the fact that she'd done this important work secret for over 5 years! She was inspired to paint portraits by the early death and memory of her father. Her art and her music are provocative, and like the trial-blazer she is, her album is titled My Body Your Choice. She's outspoken, opinionated, talented, and not afraid to let her art reflect her passions. Schein Enslaved Potters There is a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina. One of the items exhibited by artist Dave Drake is a piece of pottery signed with his name Dave and the word “concatenation” When I was researching and writing my book, Artpreneur, I was intentional about being inclusive. Too many books about art only talk about white, cisgendered men. Sharing the story of artists like Dave is important to inspire the next generation of artists. The Art of Nellie Mae Rowe The American artist Nellie Mae Rowe was in her 60's when she began to transform her Atlanta home into what she called her playhouse. It became a destination for artists until she passed away in 1982. Check out her art in the book Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe.
