Beyond Best of the Best - The Science of Breeding Excellence What does it really take to build, improve, and preserve a successful breeding strain? It's much more than simply putting two good birds together, or following the idea of "breeding the best to the best." In this episode, I reveal the 3 Laws of Selective Breeding that transformed the way I approached breeding: Selective Breeding & Systematic Breeding Programs, Evolutionary Biology, and Genetics & Inheritance. I'll share how I went from breeding what I thought were my best birds to understanding the importance of proper selection and culling, conformation, type, temperament, health, and breeding with a specific purpose and direction. I'll also explain why continually crossing and introducing new blood can sometimes move a strain further away from the traits you're trying to develop. You'll learn why breeding methods, such as inbreeding, line-breeding, and outcrossing are simply tools, and why knowing when, how, and why to use them is what makes a systematic breeding program effective. We'll also explore the breeding programs I developed and teach through the Breeder's Academy: The Founders Program, Gene Shopping Program, and Improvement through Reduction Program. Each program has a specific purpose in creating, transforming, improving, or maintaining a strain. Then we'll take a deeper look at evolutionary biology and genetic inheritance, including ancestry, uniformity, genetic variation, dominant and recessive traits, polygenic traits, sex-linked traits, and progeny testing. Understanding these principles gives breeders a greater ability to evaluate their birds, make informed mating decisions, and guide a strain in a deliberate direction instead of relying on luck or chance. The biggest lesson is simple: knowing what you want is one thing; knowing how to produce it is another. Once I understood how these three laws worked together, selective breeding finally started to make sense. I was able to put the power of selection in my hands and take both myself as a breeder and my fowl to the next level. Jim Sanford is a renowned trainer and breeder of Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, known for their intelligence and truffle-hunting abilities. His unconventional career began with two decades of elephant training across the globe before he settled in Tennessee. At Blackberry Farm, a luxury resort, Jim initially contributed to fly fishing and horseback riding programs. His career took a new direction in 2007 when he was asked to train a Lagotto Romagnolo to find truffles—despite not knowing what a truffle was at the time. This challenge led to the development of a breeding program, importing dogs from Italy and training them for truffle work. Over the years, Jim has delivered more than 300 Lagotto puppies to owners, emphasizing that proper training and ongoing involvement are essential. Syringomyelia in Cavaliers and Beyond: What Every Breeder Needs to Know Dr. Marty Greer joins Laura Reeves to answer a listener question and break down one of the most serious and underdiagnosed neurological conditions affecting small breed dogs. If you've never heard of syringomyelia, you're not alone — but if you breed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Brussels Griffons, Pomeranians or other small brachycephalic breeds, this episode could change how you think about your breeding program. Dr. Marty Greer walks Laura through the difference between Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia (SM), two conditions that often get lumped together but aren't quite the same thing. The short version: when the skull is too small for the cerebellum, fluid circulation gets disrupted and painful pockets of fluid can form along the spinal cord. The result is a dog in chronic, often invisible pain. The symptoms are easy to miss. Phantom scratching near the neck, sleeping with the head elevated, flinching when picked up or eating from a floor-level bowl — all of these can look like something minor. In Cavaliers especially, an ear condition with overlapping symptoms makes diagnosis even trickier. Only an MRI gives you a definitive answer, and that's where things get complicated fast. MRIs run anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000. Dogs need to be fully anesthetized. Cavaliers aren't the easiest anesthetic candidates for a variety of reasons. And even after all that investment, the genetics are multifactorial and polygenetic, meaning two "clear" dogs can still produce affected offspring. The numbers are sobering. When screening efforts launched in the U.S., the breed incidence was estimated at 60 to 80 percent. Careful screening cut that roughly in half — but that still leaves the breed sitting around 35 to 40 percent affected, and only a fraction of dogs are ever screened. Treatment options exist but aren't encouraging. Surgical intervention has a relapse rate of over 50 percent. Long-term management means gabapentin, steroids and other medications for the life of the dog. It's a heavy burden for dogs and owners alike. So what can breeders actually do right now? Marty and Laura make the case for breeding normal to normal as consistently as possible, tracking health outcomes across generations and pushing for group MRI clinics to bring costs down through volume. One breeder they profile used to pack 8 to 10 dogs into a vehicle and drive to Canada just to get affordable scans. That's dedication — but it shouldn't be the only option. Another year, another Overlook Film Festival, one of the premier genre festivals in the country. Unfortunately, this year, the main players of The Scariest Things were unable to attend the festival in person. Eric was able to get some of the films to stream, but, as is the norm, remote screeners were limited and did not include the showcase films. Fortunately for us, one of our loyal Patreon Contributors, Robin Marcotte, was in attendance again, and she helped fill in the gaps we missed. This year, there were a number of good films, and according to Robin, one GREAT film. This year, we watched fourteen films and thirty shorts. Give our recap a listen to hear our thoughts on the 2026 Overlook presentation. It pains me not to attend Overlook. It is one of my favorite events every year, but this doldrums economy forced me to be cautious with my funds, so I resorted to reviewing their films remotely. The pandemic spoiled stay-at-home movie critics, as nobody could attend festivals in person. All the films were remote. The times have reverted back, however, and one of the poorly held secrets is that film festivals rarely ever make their centerpiece films available for remote review. SXSW, Sundance, Overlook… the bigger films just don’t get the distributor go-ahead. However, some independent films were made available, and that was true for 2026. Fortunately for us, one of our valued Patreon patrons, Robyn Marcotte, was, as usual, in attendance, as she is a New Orleans local. Shockingly, many of the releases with known quantity actors and/or directors failed to connect with Robyn. Proof positive that The Scariest Things is not a shill for festival darling films! Still, there were a number of gems worth watching.
