We're talking about matters of the heart related to diabetes with music from Celine Dion. Heart disease is common in people with diabetes. The National Heart Association reports 65% of people with diabetes will die from some sort of heart disease or stroke. In general, the risk of heart disease death and stroke are more than twice as high in people with diabetes. However, by managing your risk factors, you may avoid or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease. Divabetic's Diabetes Late Nite podcast guests include Janis Roszler, PhD, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND, Mila Clarke Buckley aka The Hangry Woman, and Bella Krueger. Throughout the podcast we will be featuring music from Celine Dion's Falling Into You album courtesy of SONY Music. One of the surprising things I've found out about myself while interviewing people for Diabetes By The Numbers is that I'm one of the worst pronouncers of names I've ever met. That's horrible, especially when I have a guest as special as Renza Scibilia. Renza is a diabetes superhero worldwide, with her blog, her work for a large diabetes organization in Australia, and her presence at the forefront of the most important issues facing all of us. After Renza gets me straightened out on the correct pronunciation of her last name, we talk about the upcoming ATTD conference in Berlin, the importance of #LanguageMatters, and how critical the Spare a Rose campaign is. Which is timely, because this episode of Diabetes By The Numbers is part of Diabetes Podcast Week, February 10 through 16. All of the podcasters and video bloggers are throwing their efforts this week behind the Spare a Rose, Save a Child campaign through the International Diabetes Federation's Life for a Child program. As I've mentioned before, the cost of one rose (about $5 USD) saves the life of a child for one month. The cost of a dozen roses gains a child in another part of the world an entire year to play, go to school, and be with their families. Who doesn’t love that? There are children all over the world who are depending on us. So please, take time right now. Go to LFACInternational.org/SpareaRose and make your life-sustaining donation. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Renza! Celebrating Diabetes Podcast Week 2018 and the launch of the Spare a Rose campaign, I'm joined by Renza Scibilia for a conversation about patient communities crossing borders, and oceans. We cover Renza's diabetes diagnosis, the value of peer support locally and abroad, how Australia's healthcare system matches up with the rest of the world, and the importance of language and word choice when we talk about the patient experience. Keep up with Renza on Twitter @RenzaS and diabetogenic.wordpress.com. Learn more about Diabetes Podcast Week here and visit sparearose.org to make a donation to Life for a Child. Guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, Jaye O'Grey, Janis Roszler LMFT, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND, Diabetes Podcast Week founder, Stacey Simms and Mama Rose Marie. Hello, and welcome to my little part of Diabetes Podcast Week. This week, eleven diabetes podcasters and video bloggers are taking part in a week-long diabetes information-fest, and centering once again on the Spare A Rose, Save A Child campaign. So listen to this episode, then use the giving link to make your donation and save the life of a child living in a developing country who is also living with diabetes. More information on Spare A Rose, Save A Child is at the beginning of this episode, and there's an additional link below. My guest for this episode is one of my best friends in the world, Karen Graffeo. But that's not why you should listen to our conversation. You should listen because Karen, in addition to leading Diabetes Sisters' Virtual PODS (Part Of Diabetes Sisters) group, is helping to lead Diabetes Sisters Voices, a collaboration between Diabetes Sisters, the Johns Hopkins University, the University of North Carolina, TrustNetMD, and the Diabetes Sisters stakeholder advisory board of women and diabetes advocates. If you're a woman living with diabetes, there is an easy way for you to participate in this groundbreaking research, and Karen is going to tell you all about it. There's also a link below. I think I also may have inadvertently convinced Karen to reprise Diabetes Blog Week this spring:) I hope so. This week: OpenAPS, Looping, Happ - a bunch of weird sounding terms that are changing the way many manage diabetes. Tim Street has lived with type 1 for 28 years, he writes a blog called Diabettech. Tim talks about the DIY systems out there right now (he's tried almost all of them) and about all the new choices for people with diabetes available now an in the next few years. Lots of conversation in this show about the “art of the possible." It's also Diabetes Podcast Week! This is the second year of Stacey's campaign to bring together podcasters and video bloggers to benefit Spare a Rose, Save a Child. Diabetes in developing countries can be a death sentence. This Valentine’s day, considering donating the cost of just one rose. That can keep a child with type 1 alive for a month. A dozen roses? That cost can cover a year. Spare a Rose benefits Life for a Child, an International Diabetes Federation Program.
This week's guest, Julie De Vos has been skiing about since she could walk. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 11 she’s now a coach with Riding on Insulin & program director for Connected in Motion. Julie was determined to keep skiing after her diagnosis and shares the challenges she faced as a young competitor. As an adult, a Google search led her to Connected in Motion, a Canadian diabetes athlete group and then Riding on Insulin, which encourages kids and adults with T1D to participate in action sports. Julie talks about the importance of metal health in diabetes management, looks back on her years living with T1D and offers some advice for parents and caregivers of people with diabetes. In this episode, Stacey also talks about the American Diabetes Association's new statement and petition in support of affordable insulin and previews Diabetes Podcast Week, which starts 2/6/2017.
Wil Dubois has written a weekly diabetes advice column for DiabetesMine for more than ten years. Called "Ask D'Mine," Wil answers questions with straight-talk, a blunt attitude and understanding that comes from experience. Diagnosed type 1 as an adult (and first misdiagnosed) he's also a diabetes author and community educator. Stacey & Will talk about the column, Wil's diagnosis and about working in an area of the country where diabetes educators and endos are few in number and access. Wil also shares which columns generated the strongest reactions from readers. This episode also features information about Diabetes Podcast Week. Plus a way you or your business can help the Spare a Rose campaign get life-saving diabetes supplies to children in developing nations while also getting a mention on the show.
Three of the advocates behind the Spare a Rose charity campaign explain how it helps children with diabetes in the developing world. Kerri Sparling, Scott Johnson & Bennet Dunlap also play a few diabetes-news games with listeners. This episode is our contribution to Diabetes Podcast Week, a first of its kind effort organized by Stacey.

Insulin should not be a luxury. This episode of Diabetes By The Numbers features the Superwoman known to her friends and compatriots as Merle Gleeson. In our opening round question, she describes herself as vivacious, committed, and reliable. She's that and a lot more.Merle has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for over 50 years. Around nineteen years ago, her and a few friends started something called the Type 1 Diabetes Lounge, which holds regular meetings, fundraisers, educational sessions, parties, and more in the Chicago area. It's quite an operation, and if you're looking to kick start a local diabetes meetup or amp up the meetup you already have, you can do a lot worse than listening to Merle. One other thing, though we don't talk about it during the podcast: Merle Gleeson was one of our first Champion Athletes With Diabetes medal winners. She does it all, and I chronicled some of that back in March of 2014. It's worth a read. Here then is my conversation with Merle Gleeson, and a special message about Spare a Rose, Save a Child.Help save the life of a child living with diabetes in a developing country by donating to the Spare a Rose, Save a Child campaign today:http://www.p4dc.com/spare-a-rose/give/Reference Material - Click below for more information on this topicMerle Gleeson is founder and CEO of the Type 1 Diabetes Lounge in the Chicago area:type1diabeteslounge.com/More about Diabetes Podcast Week can be found at Stacey Simms' blog:staceysimms.comSpare a Rose, Save a Child is an initiative of the non-profit Partners for Diabetes Change.
