In this episode, Hazel reflects on the passage of time and the importance of moving from a state of compulsiveness to one of consciousness. They share personal experiences of a mixed week, emphasising the quest for true freedom—both external and internal. KEY TAKEAWAYS Awareness of Time: Life can often feel like it's rushing by, and it's important to become more conscious of how we spend our time and the experiences we have each day. Inner Freedom: True freedom is an internal experience rather than something dependent on external circumstances. It’s essential to recognise that the feeling of freedom comes from within. Direct Experience: Our only reliable reference point in life is our own direct experience. By focusing on the present moment and what we are experiencing, we can cultivate a sense of peace and liberation. Mindfulness Practice: Taking moments throughout the day to stop, breathe, and let go of distractions can help us reconnect with a sense of well-being and inner peace. Neutrality of Life: For most of us, life is generally neutral and peaceful. By acknowledging this, we can shift our perspective and reduce stress, recognizing that many of our worries are not as pressing as they seem. BEST MOMENTS"What I really notice... is that we can actually miss a big chunk of our lives by just going through and doing the usual stuff." "The only thing that we know is our own direct experience of life." "If you find yourself searching for a sense of freedom... just stop for a moment. Just literally stop." "99% of the time, life is actually pretty neutral." "Every single day is a gift. I wake up in the morning and I remind myself that which I'm truly grateful." She and her husband built a successful, multi-million-pound property business, next to their own careers, but soon realised that true freedom doesn’t JUST come from being financially independent… Having meant so much to her family, it has been her passion ever since, to inspire, educate and empower others on their journeys towards this 'Holy Grail'. During one particular property mentoring session back in 2009, she had a powerful recognition of exactly how to facilitate this. Nicknamed now, The Wealth Whisperer, she has a unique way of getting to the crux of what is needed to help fulfil this quest. CONTACT METHODS WebsiteInstagram

Hi, Do you have a question for us? Ask away!In this thoughtful Mailbox episode, Justine and Gemma respond to a listener's heartfelt question about navigating the confusion between green flags and subtle red flags in a relationship. 'Laura', the listener, describes her experience dating a man who seemed like a wonderful partner—kind, attentive, successful, and emotionally vulnerable. However, despite these positive qualities, Laura noticed subtle signs of emotional detachment and avoidance that left her questioning whether she was overreacting or misinterpreting the situation.Gemma and Justine guide 'Laura' through the process of recognizing that what she saw as subtle red flags were, in fact, pretty significant signs of deeper issues. They discuss how behaviors like rushing into intimacy, oversharing trauma early on, and withdrawing during difficult conversations are often clear markers of emotional unavailability. These red flags can be easily overlooked when our schemas—particularly abandonment or anxious attachment schemas—get in the way, making us doubt our instincts or take too much responsibility for relationship challenges.Gemma and Justine emphasize that Laura's experience is a common one, especially for those whose schemas may cloud their ability to accurately assess a partner's behavior. They offer practical advice on how to trust your instincts, stay attuned to how you feel in a relationship, and avoid the trap of self-blame when things don't seem to add up.Topics discussed:Emotional vulnerability vs. trauma bonding: Understanding when vulnerability feels meaningful versus when it's used to create a quick emotional connection that isn't sustainable.Rushing intimacy: Why too much attention or time too quickly can signal unmet emotional needs in the other person, rather than a healthy, steady connection.Emotional withdrawal: How detachment during sex, lack of affection, or avoidance of difficult topics are often red flags for emotional unavailability—even when a partner seems attentive in other areas. The role of schemas: How an abandonment schema can lead to self-doubt, causing us to overlook or minimize important warning signs.Balancing green and red flags: Why even a relationship filled with positive traits can be problematic if subtle, but significant, red flags are undermining emotional intimacy and trust. This episode is essential listening for anyone navigating the complexities of dating, especially if you're finding it difficult to interpret mixed signals. Justine and Gemma remind us that trusting your gut and recognizing your schemas can help you make clearer, more empowered decisions in relationships.Reach out to us by email if you are interested in our new exciting group coaching program "Date Differently".  Information about private coaching with Dr Gemma or Dr Justine email us: justineandgemma@goodmood.com.auThe Red Flag Project: a place for women to do the self-development they need to choose loving, respectful relationships.InstagramFacebookClick the link below to find out more about our online dating course, our course on schema chemistry and how to break free from love-traps.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/theredflagprojectSchema Therapy for Life: For anyone who wants to become their own pattern-breaker using the wisdom and clarity of Schema Therapy.Support the show

When the enemy starts shooting his fiery darts at your heart and mind, reminding you of wounds from your past, or arranging circumstances to make you feel that you are defeated, don't shrink from the attack. Don't become a wounded one, who falls prey to his lies, accusations, and schemes. Instead, be a warrior. Know the truth of who you are and the power of Christ in you. Stand firm, clothed (abiding) in the character and identity of Jesus Christ.  SUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:Your Daily Prayer: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-prayer/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: Becoming Strong in Our Struggles  by Cindi McMenamin, Crosswalk Contributing Writer  Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-11) Are you struggling through some wounds right now? What if you were to think about it as a season of strengthening rather than a season of struggle?  I was thinking the other day about how easily we can be wounded.  Hurtful comments from others, disappointment in relationships, or a circumstance that seems unfair can make us cower in feelings of weakness and failure. In addition to these common everyday wounds, there are serious wounds that may impact us as well—deep hurts from our childhood, abuse in any form, abandonment or betrayal from someone we trusted, the sudden or premature loss of a loved one, chronic pain, rejection, and more. But those wounds don't have to define us or dictate our character or our future.  The Scriptures say our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against "the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12 NIV).  That passage tells me two things: 1) Satan and the powers of darkness seek to wound and debilitate us, and 2) We are empowered to be warriors...not weaklings who remain wounded. Scripture exhorts us in Ephesians 6:10-11 to "be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power" and to "put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes" (NIV).  Then as we're given details in how to put on those pieces of armor, we're told to take the shield of faith "with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (verse 16 NIV).  I started thinking about how many of us fall prey to the flaming arrows or "fiery darts" of the enemy because we believe his lies, like…  No one will ever really love you, so just face it   You are a pathetic example of a parent.   Your spouse doesn't really love you; they're just going through the motions. You call yourself a child of God? Just look at the way you behave!  You should be ashamed of all that is in your past.  Everyone knows what a fake and phony you are. Just give it up!  You can never live a life of meaning and purpose, so don't even try.  Those fiery darts pierce our hearts, they stab our minds, they condition our thinking. They convince us that God's words are lies and the Satan's words (which are sometimes our own thoughts or words spoken to us through other people) are true.  But Scripture tells us to put on the armor of God as a defense against these lies, accusations and fiery darts.  Intersecting Faith and Life:  For years, I wondered what the analogy meant and how to actually suit up in the armor of God. Then my husband, a pastor, explained it in a Bible study one evening. He pointed out that every piece of armor symbolizes Christ in some way. And therefore, putting on the armor of God is synonymous with clothing yourself in the character of Jesus Christ, or simply abiding in Him.  We are to fasten the belt of truth around our waist, which means to know at the core of our being that Jesus is the truth. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).  We are to wear the breastplate of righteousness, meaning we are to cover our heart with Christ who is called "The Lord our Righteousness" in Jeremiah 23:6. We are to take up the shield of faith in order to extinguish those fiery darts from the enemy. Psalm 84:11 tells us "The Lord is a sun and shield..." and Christ is the object of our faith.   We are to put on the helmet of salvation by guarding our heads and minds with Christ because Acts 4:12 says "Salvation is found in no one else.”  We are to take the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God—and John 1:14 tells us Jesus is the Word made flesh. Suit up, my friend. Wield your sword like a warrior and tell the enemy to bring it on! You have all you need to be victorious in Him.  Lord, Jesus, thank You that You have already declared my victory when I fight in Your strength alone. Help me to clothe myself in Your character so I have all I need to overcome the enemy's assault.   Further Reading: Galatians 5:22-23  For more on becoming a warrior woman, rather than a wounded one, see Cindi's book, When a Woman Overcomes Life's Hurts.  Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

97. This Hidden Schema Sabotages Success: Unmasking the Failure Schema

The Good Mood Clinic Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2024 32:05

Hi, send us a text message. Episode Summary:Dr Gemma Gladstone and Justine Corry dive into the Failure Schema, a schema that is often overlooked but can be profoundly impactful in many areas of life, particularly in achievement and work-related contexts. They explore how this schema manifests, its origins, and how it often intertwines with other schemas such as defectiveness, dependence, and even unrelenting standards.Key Takeaways:Understanding the Failure Schema: The Failure Schema is a pervasive belief that one is destined to fail or is inherently inadequate, especially when compared to others. It often surfaces in academic, career, and achievement-related areas.Origins and Development: This schema may develop from childhood experiences such as being labeled as "slow," having learning difficulties, or growing up with unrealistic expectations from parents. It can also be linked to feeling inadequate compared to siblings or peers.Coping Styles: The failure schema can lead to various coping behaviors, including avoidance (not trying new things due to fear of failure), surrender (believing fully in the schema and setting low standards for oneself), and overcompensation (attempting to prove the schema wrong by setting unrealistic goals).Self-Sabotage: One of the most significant ways the failure schema manifests is through self-sabotage, where individuals might avoid challenges, procrastinate, or engage in behaviors that ensure they fail, thus reinforcing the schema.Interrelation with Other Schemas: The failure schema often does not exist in isolation. It may be accompanied by schemas like defectiveness (feeling inherently flawed) or unrelenting standards (setting impossibly high standards to avoid failure).Practical Advice:Challenge the Schema: Start by identifying the origins of your failure schema. Reflect on past experiences that may have contributed to its development and consider alternative explanations for these experiences.Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway: Overcoming the failure schema requires pushing through the fear of failure and taking risks. Setting achievable goals and gradually exposing yourself to new challenges can help shift this deep-seated belief.Break the Cycle: Recognize the coping behaviors that reinforce the failure schema and actively work to change them. Whether it's avoidance, surrender, or overcompensation, addressing these patterns is key to overcoming the schema.CONNECT WITH USThe Red Flag Project: a place for women to do the self-development they need to choose loving, respectful relationships.InstagramFacebookClick the link below to find out more about our online dating course, our course on schema chemistry and how to break free from love-traps and our online membership The Schema Circle.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/theredflagprojectSchema Therapy for Life: For anyone who wants to become their own pattern-breaker using the wisdom and clarity of Schema Therapy.InstagramFacebookLinktree: https://linktr.ee/schematherapyforlifeInformation about private therapy/coaching with Gemma or Justine email us: justineandgemma@goodmood.com.auSupport the Show.

Jesus is the Christmas gift who God sent to the earth 2,000 years ago. Through him, we receive the gift of eternal life, sonship, forgiveness of sins, and the gift of righteousness. These are things that we cannot earn, but are freely given to us, because of Jesus and his sacrifice on Calvary. If you have to work to receive something, it is no longer a gift. It is an obligation. But God gives us a free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I encourage you to receive all that God has for you in Christ Jesus today. NOTES: Jesus, The Christmas Gift ““For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, MEV) Main Thought: God in His love has given us a gift to receive, not to be earned. Jesus is God's Gift to Humanity “Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name,” (John 1:12, MEV) Salvation is Given, Not Earned “The Example of Abraham What then shall we say that Abraham, our father according to the flesh, has found? If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to him who works, wages are not given as a gift, but as a debt. (Romans 4:1-4, MEV) They Which Receive Will Reign in Life “For if by one man's trespass death reigned through him, then how much more will those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17, MEV) Jesus is a gift. Sonship is a gift. Eternal Life is a gift. Righteousness is a gift. All the benefits of salvation are a gift. We are His Workmanship “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10, MEV) Conclusion: Make  a decision today, to not depend on your own righteousness, but to believe in Jesus, and all that he has done for you. Cristina Robinson is the founder and designer behind The Lovely Geek, a web design studio aimed at elevating women in their online presence. Her passion for the web started in high school and led to an internship with Intel, followed by several years of freelancing. Armed with her Bachelor of Science degree in Web Design & Interactive Media, she spent nearly a decade working for local Sacramento agencies before ultimately becoming her own boss. Her experience from the big agencies inspired her to help small businesses, and now she works almost exclusively with female solopreneurs making their brands shine.    Here's what we covered on the episode:   How Cristina Got Her Start in Web Design How I met Cristina through Paty Ventura, who was on episode 193 of the podcast  Cristina was inspired to create her own website after meeting a friend at summer camp who had a website on Yahoo Geocities and an online journal  If you wanted to customize any text or put in any images, you had to learn HTML, so Cristina started teaching herself a lot of the basics  In high school, Cristina took a beginning HTML class, and the teacher saw she was passionate and showed a lot of promise, so he asked her to be his teacher's assistant for her senior year  While being a teacher's assistant, Cristina got the chance to redesign and maintain the school's website Other school staff members noticed Cristina's work, and then she found out about an internship for high school students with Intel, which her teachers encouraged her to apply for During her Intel internship, Cristina met a lot of other students, got a great learning experience, and it gave her insight into the corporate world   Unfortunately, most colleges at the time didn't offer a web design degree, the closest they had was majoring in communications or computer science, but that wasn't the route Cristina wanted to go Cristina started looking at more specialized schools, like The Art Institute, where she was able to find a web design and interactive media major  How Cristina's first freelance client was the traditional nightmare client who made her question if she actually wanted to freelance  While in college, Cristina was able to get her first paid internship with a local agency, and after she graduated, it turned into a full-time role Most of the people at the agency Cristina had gone to school with, so she knew their work ethic, and they were able to collaborate well together  This agency is where Cristina met Paty because they both went to The Art Institute and worked at this agency together  The agency was big into tourism, so Cristina got to work on a few projects for Yosemite, the state fair, and a lot of local businesses in the Sacramento area   Cristina says she had a lot of great learning experiences and met a lot of people from working at the agency Because Cristina grew up 45 mins away from Sacramento, she didn't really know her major city until she started working at the agency, which made her appreciate it After working at this agency for a few years, Cristina got a job at another agency where she was able to focus on design - she got to do website design, interface design, print design, and dabble in app design     When Cristina got pregnant with her daughter, she decided to stay home and went back to freelancing, which is how she ended up where she is today  All of Cristina's clients have been referral based and have been people that she's worked with already in some capacity  Most of Cristina's freelance work has been with small business owners, usually solopreneurs, and she shares she only started working with companies when at the agencies   Cristina has done enough work to realize her sweet spot is working one-on-one with women - women much like herself who want to be their own boss, and Cristina comes in to help with the online portion  How Cristina started branding this year because she found that the people coming to her either had a brand they created but weren't happy with or they had nothing  Branding isn't Cristina's preferred offering, she can do it, but she would rather partner with someone so she could send clients to that person for the branding experience and then have clients come back to her to take care of their website  Cristina shared she just found someone she would like to partner with who does branding   Staying Organized + Keeping Clients for Life  For project management, Cristina uses Dubsado because it has a great client portal option, but she also uses Notion and has found it very handy for her retainer clients - with Notion, Cristina creates content and calendars, tracks hours, tracks projects, and says you can create whatever you want   How Cristina recommended Notion to her husband, who is a Twitch streamer and content creator, and now he uses it to organize all his YouTube videos and TikToks and even writes his scripts in it  In Notion, Cristina will create a content calendar, and within that calendar, she has different templates for each content type - blogs, emails, Instagram posts, Reels or TikToks, etc. For example, Cristina will look at her calendar and see that on Tuesday, she wants to do a blog post, so she'll select her blog post template, which already has all the fields she needs in it    Within the database in Notion, Cristina can see a list of all of her content, and as she's brainstorming, she can put all her ideas in one place so when it comes time to map out her content, it's very easy to do and well organized   Cristina says she's always been a blogger and likes to create that content when she has time   One tool people should be utilizing the power of LinkedIn because their algorithm can get you a lot of exposure - Cristina recommends using LinkedIn's section where you can write articles  One thing Cristina likes to do is create an article on LinkedIn that's similar to a blog post she already has, so if someone wants to read more, they can click over to her website to read the blog post, so she's still driving traffic to her website  Cristina offers a retainer service after she's worked with a client on their project because she finds that people end up wanting to be very hands-off and want someone to help maintain - Cristina says it's really up to the client what they want her to do A lot of times, Cristina's retainer clients will write up blog posts by throwing their content in a word document, and then she's responsible for scheduling it, putting together the graphics, and making sure it goes on all the right platforms Cristina always designs her websites with the intention of the client saying, thanks, I've got it from here, but a lot of times, the clients want her to continue to help maintain     In Notion, Cristina has a client-facing content planner for her clients to see what content is scheduled - then they can make decisions on adjustments or adding on  Clients have appreciated seeing their content scheduled out so they can see where they're at and what they need to provide Cristina has found that most clients have worked with another website designer who worked with them one time and then disappeared, which makes Cristina sad because then the clients don't have the tools they need to maintain  It's important to Cristina that she emphasizes no matter what, even if it's been days, months, or years since she's worked on a client project, they are a client for life, so they can always reach out to her  There was a time while working at the agencies when Cristina was not taking on freelance work, but she still took care of and helped her current clients  When people feel taken care of, they're going to have nice things about you  The biggest tip Cristina has is to build a routine based on what works for you and know what time you have blocked off for certain tasks  It's important for Cristina to balance work while being a mom - her kids are up from as early as 6:00 am and take a nap around 1:00 pm, so she knows that the tasks she's working on during those hours need to be ones where it's okay if she's interrupted or ones where she's not being paid hourly  Knowing which tasks require your full, entire attention vs. which tasks can be interrupted a little bit is important  Check out Cristina's website, The Lovely Geek.com, and connect with her on Instagram     Links mentioned: The Lovely Geek Website Episode 193 with Paty Ventura  Connect with Cristina on Instagram Connect with Cristina on Pinterest   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. Sacred Stories | Prayer of Surrender at the End of Life “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” - Ecclesiastes 3:1 A young woman breathing with the help of a ventilator lay unconscious in the Intensive Care Unit. For many days, her mother and other family members participated in multiple conversations and interdisciplinary conferences. Doctors gave a very poor prognosis and recommended comfort measures. The patient's mother was a faith filled Christian who passionately insisted she could not give up on her daughter. The chaplain had built trust with the family. One day, the chaplain shared that a prayer of surrender with raised, open palms can have a profound visceral effect. He demonstrated the contrast between closed, clenched fists and open palms. The family was interested in participating in such a prayer around the bed of their loved one. The chaplain gave thanks for God's Spirit being present in the midst of all circumstances; offered surrender and prayer for God's highest good for the young woman; and acknowledged that an answer to their prayers could mean complete cure or passage into Heaven. In the midst of the shared silence with raised hands and open palms, the patient's mother was able to say, “Not my will, but thy will be done.” It was a bittersweet breakthrough that brought new peace to a mother's fierce, dedicated love, and offered freedom. The act of surrender with raised, open palms helped this mother loosen the tight grip she thought she needed to maintain in order to advocate for her daughter. This began a new conversation about what the young woman herself would want, and her mother was able to let go. Some time later, the mother returned to the ICU to thank the staff for the care her daughter received and the support that she had been given. Submitted by Dan Olivieri Questions for Reflection Take a moment to experience the contrast between tightly clenching your fists, and gently raising your open hands in receptivity. Try this as you think about a dilemma you are facing. What does “surrender” mean to you? How does one's physical posture help or hinder a person's practice of surrender? ACT NOW - While You still can and the opportunities are right before you! - Do not procrastinate your time to ACT, lest the devil rob and destroy you before you can ever repent or have another opportunity to be right with GOD. NOW is your TIME to shine as children of GOD, children of the Light of GOD in Jesus Christ our eternal LIFE and KING. Know, Greater is JESUS in You than the devil - but YOU must BELIEVE INDEED with you Action, acting daily on GOD's WORD with a pure heart of faith, lead by GOD's LOVE. Seeking he first the Kingdom of GOD and his Righteousness with a humble repented heart of FAITH seeking after GOD's Heart, to increase in the knowledge and manifold wisdom of GOD in Jesus Christ. Remember! “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." - James 4:6-8,10 MEV Take Heart, "...I say and testify in the Lord, that from now on you walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their minds, having their understanding darkened, excluded from the life of God through the ignorance that is within them, due to the hardness of their hearts. Being calloused they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn about Christ in this manner, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off the former way of life in the old nature, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that you put on the new nature, which was created according to God in righteousness and true holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, let every man speak truthfully with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. Do not give place to the devil. Let him who steals steal no more. Instead, let him labor, working with his hands things which are good, that he may have something to share with him who is in need. Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you are sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outbursts, and blasphemies, with all malice, be taken away from you. And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you." - Ephesians 4:17-32 MEV BE BLESSED in Jesus name. Tools of Life is written and produced by Julie Ford of Julz of Life where we've been supporting parents and teens as they navigate the challenging richness of raising the next generation. This stage of life is full of our own "remember when" and "oh boy, here we go" moments that we can choose to either DREAD or RELISH. No stage of parenting (or life…) should need to be endured. Let's enjoy every stage. Today's Tools of Life is focused on Navigating the New Normal in the face of COVID 19 distancing orders. Parents and teens are navigating a tremendous number of uncharted territory on a normal day. With all the cancellations, postponements and uncertainties, those challenges have been amped up exponentially. We've asked Dr. Lara May to join us to talk a bit about energy and immunity and also to lead us in a grounding meditation. Dr. Lara moved to Lake Tahoe after completing her residency in Clinical Pharmacotherapy. She has worked as a clinical pharmacist in emergency rooms and adult acute care for a decade. Lara started studying and practicing reiki and energy medicine in 2014. Her passion has since grown from “band-aid medicine” into empowering people to truly heal themselves on the physical, mental and spiritual levels. Now, as a Functional Medicine Specialist, Lara has expanded her coaching practice to encompass energy medicine, intuitive healing and functional medicine. All with the intention of empowering the healing of her clients on multiple levels to restore their health and happiness. --------------------------------- At Tools of Life we offer you something to ponder, to practice and to play with. Here are today's: Ponder- “One day when you wake up, you will find that you have become a forest. You have grown roots and found strength in them that no one thought you had. You have become stronger and more beautiful, full of life-giving qualities. You have learned to take all the negativity around you and turn it into oxygen for easy breathing. A host of wild creatures live inside you and you call them stories. A variety of beautiful birds rest inside your mind and you call them memories. You have become an incredible self-sustaining thing of epic proportions. And you should be so proud of yourself, of how far you have come from the seeds of who you used to be.” – Nikita Gill, You Have Become a Forest Practice - Honor and mourn/acknowledge the loss of OLD Normal Be open to the possibilities and ways to thrive in NEW Normal Choose to take small, do-able steps toward creative solutions in NEW Normal. Laodicea: Be Wholehearted Revelation 3:14-22 The image of warm water being spewed out of the mouth of the Lord is an unforgettable picture. We think of this image of a lackluster faith of complacency. But what is the real disease? The City of Laodicea • A very wealthy city built on three industries: banking, clothing and medical • A city famous for manufacturing black woolen cloth used for expensive garments exported all over the world • The whole goal of the city was one of pride Disconnected for the Source of Life • For all the economic advantages, its one outstanding shortcoming was its poor water supply • The water supply was piped to the city from six miles away making it weak and undesirable Material Prosperity and the Spirit of Self-Sufficiency • There is a link between spiritual complacency and material blessing Opening the Door to Wholeheartedness • Confessing the need for divine presence • God is looking for people who are willing to say “I’m all in”

REASON #1: RecognitionOn the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”If I do not recognize the mighty things God has done to bless me, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #2:  For My FoundationFor by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”  (Ephesians 6:8 ESV)If I do not recognize the grace that has allowed me to enter my relationship with God, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #3:  For My New Start“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)I have been given the freedom to start a new life. If I received the gift of this freedom and yet still live in darkness, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #4: For the Gift of God's Word“How can a young person live a clean life? By carefully reading the map of your Word. I'm single-minded in pursuit of you; don't let me miss the road signs you've posted. I've banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I won't sin myself bankrupt.” (Psalms 119: 9-11 MSG)God carefully gave His Word over several centuries and through several writers so that I can be led in the right way. If I do not embrace what He did for me by seeking His wisdom from His Word, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #5: For the Gift of Life“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalms 139:13 ESV)The passage above is one of the best esteem-builders known. Just think of it. I have been literally formed by Almighty God. He blended all of my cells, molecules, chromosomes, personality traits, talents and all aspects of my life while I was still in my mother's womb. Do I really believe that I am wonderfully made? Do I thank God for my life? If I do not am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #6: For the Gift of Wisdom“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” (1 Corinthians 2:12 ESV)As I look back on life, do I see a special time that I was able to understand something of great importance, and I didn't know how I could? It was not my norm. It came from nowhere. But it didn't come from nowhere. It came from the Lover of my soul who wants to teach me how to use His wisdom instead the limited wisdom of the world. If I do not seek His wisdom and obey it when I find it, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #7: For the Gift of Peace“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV)Peace is a gift, but will I accept this gift from God? Peace is also a “fruit of the Spirit.” But will I allow His Spirit to speak peace into my heart and mind? If I will, then I will experience a peace that surpasses all understanding. If I will not trust Jesus with what I am struggling with even though He has told me that He will take my burden, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #8: For the Gift of LaughterA cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. (Proverbs 17:22 NLT)Laughter is good medicine, but laughter must be a fruit of a “cheerful heart.” What does that mean? My heartis described as my emotional center. It is really what I believe and hope for. It is my deepest love, and my deepest feelings. If I do not have this cheer in my heart, is it because I do not believe it, or I do believe it but will not receive what is offered? If I will not receive that which has been granted to me, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #9: For the Gift of Significant People“I thank my God every time I remember you.” (Philippians 1:3 NIV)A wise person becomes wise through their experiences and the experience of others. We don't just become wise without some help. The Lord provides such experiences and people in our life to instruct us, and to form us. If I do not recognize these significant people in my life and thank God for them, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #10:  For the Gift of Parents or Guardians“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12 ESV)Does the honor of my parents or guardians only fall on them if they deserve it? Do I see any condition attached to God's commandment that exempts me from honoring these people? I am simply told to just, “DO IT!” If I will not obey my Heavenly Daddy who tells me to do this, do I really appreciate His perfect love for me? If I withhold giving honor to my parents for any reason, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #11: For the Gift of My Church“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,” (Ephesians 4:11 NIV)Do I thank God for my church, my pastor, and our leaders? Are they ministering to me God's word accurately and shepherding me as they should? If they are this way, am I grateful enough to thank God for them?  If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #12:  For the Gift of God's Friendship“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”  John 15:15 ESVWhat does it mean to be a friend of Jesus? More importantly what does it mean to have Jesus as my friend? If I do not tell Him how much I appreciate His friendship, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #13: For the Gift of DisciplineMy dear child, don't shrug off God's discipline, but don't be crushed by it either. It's the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects. (Hebrews 12:6 MSG)When it comes down to it, God is preparing me for something better when He disciplines me. That is enough of a reason to thank Him isn't it? Will I take a step of faith in my prayers right now and thank Him for what is going on even if I am hurting from His discipline? If I will not, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #14: For the Gift of TrialsCount it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4 ESV)God uses trials in my life to produce steadfastness in me, which also perfects me. It is His process of development. Do I thank Him for His process, even though it may include trials? If not, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #15: For the Gift of the Crown of LifeBlessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.  (James 1:12 ESV)God keeps His promises. He is true to His word. Do I thank Him for the crown of life He has promised to me? If I do not, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #16: For the Gift of LIGHTEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:17 ESV)Jesus is the “light” to the world. He gives us light in darkness. Light causes darkness to flee. Do I thank God for the many times He has shed light on my path and directed my steps? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #17: For the Gift of ProtectionEven when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (Psalms 23:4 NLT)I have been given God's protection from many difficulties that are known and unknown by me. The assurance of God's presence in my life has given me comfort. Do I thank Him only during an apparent threat, or will I thank Him even though I do see a threat coming? If I do not recognize His protection of preventing things that could hurt me, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #18: For the Gift of God's ShepherdingThe LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalms 23:1 ESV)God watches over me! What a promise. What a benefit. What comfort. Do I believe this? Do I rely on this? Do I find my comfort in His sovereign oversight of my life? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #19:  For the Gift of God's Complete ForgivenessAs far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. (Psalms 103:12 ESV)Do I retain any thought that God has not forgiven me of sins that I've repented of? If so, I am probably listening to the Accuser's voice rather than the One who I sinned against. God's voice tells me that I am totally and completely washed of my sins and He will remember them no more. Do I thank Him for His complete forgiveness of me? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #20: For the Gift of My FoundationThough the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. (Matthew 7:25 NLT)Jesus is my foundation, and no storm in life will take Him out from beneath me. Do I recognize Him as my constant and complete bedrock that He builds my life on? If I do not, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?REASON #21: For the Gift of being a Good Shepherd“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:14-15 NIV)There are good and bad shepherds and the sheep know the difference. However, the sheep of the good shepherd may take it for granted for they know nothing else. Jesus is my Good Shepherd. Do I take this for granted? Do I forget to recognize how good He is to me? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #22: For the Gift of a Full LifeThe thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)Jesus restored that which was lost. What was lost? Mankind lost the intimate fellowship that we once had with our Creator when sin came into the world. But Jesus restored it. Do I thank Him for this restoration? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #23: For Heaven's Treasures that Await Me“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Matthew 6:19-21 ESV)Am I storing up treasures in heaven? If so, they await me. Now is the time to store up. Do I thank God for Heaven's Bank that keeps my treasure safe? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #24: For All These ThingsBut seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33 NIV)What did Jesus mean when He said, “all these things?” He meant all things that I worry about or am concerned about for living my life. He said all those things are taken care of by my Father in Heaven. If I worry and stew over things that I think I need but do not have, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #25: For God's Tender care of MeWhen you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (NIV) Proverbs 3:24Do I thank God for His watch over my life? Do I sleep a sweet sleep because of His care? Do I thank Him for it? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #26: For God's Steadfast LoveLet your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise;  (Psalms 119:41 ESV)I don't use the word steadfast much. What does it mean? It means “resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering.” God is all those things to me. He is resolved. He is always on duty. He is firm and unwavering in His love for me. Do I thank Him for this faithful characteristic of His? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #27 For God as My Hope and My TrustFor you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. (Psalms 71:5 ESV)What can I trust or put my hope in that will never fail me? Nothing is this world can provide such hope … even the best people or the best investments or the best governments. Only the Sovereign King of the Universe can provide complete trust and hope for me. Do I take the time to thank Him for this hope and trust that He provides me? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #28:  For Knowing All the Details of My LifeBut even the hairs of your head are all numbered. (Matthew 10:30 ESV)God knows, He cares, He is willing, and He is able to take care of me, for He knows all the details (in detail) that concern my life. Nothing escapes His attention. Do I recognize this about Him and thank Him for it? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #29:  For My Daily BreadGive us this day our daily bread, (Matthew 6:11 ESV)Have I ever missed being given my “daily bread?” Has not Father proven to me over and over that He is faithful? Do I complain that I want more, or that I want to store it up, so I will not fear? Is my real reason being that I don't trust Him on this level? Am I not content to eat from my Father's hand the diet He wants me to have? If this is true, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #30: For My JobMake it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. (1 Thessalonians 4:11 NLT)Sure, I might not like my job. But am I exempt from doing my work as unto the Lord? My job provides resources for living, and my Sovereign God uses my difficulties in it to grow my faith in Him and reshape me. If He wants me out He will change my job. Until then I think He wants to change me to accept my present situation as coming from Him. If I will not thank Him for my job and praise Him during my stay in it, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #31:  For Answered Prayers“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7 ESV)I might not realize it, but God answers all my prayers. How so? “Yes – No – Wait – Something else instead,” are His ways of answering prayers. But He answers them when I pray and ask of Him. It might not be what I want at the time. But He answers them all. Will I thank Him for all my answered prayers even if they fall in a list that I think are unanswered? If I will not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #32:  For His purpose for Answered PrayerUntil now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. (John 16:24 ESV)Do I understand that Jesus wants me to ask of Him anything I think I need? But does He have a greater purpose with His answer than I realize? It is not for me to just get what I want, but rather what He thinks I need. Do I see in the promise He made that His purpose for answered prayer is to give me JOY? If I will not thank Him for the unknown answer before I am granted a clear understanding of His answer, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #33: For the Future HarvestSo let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. (Galatians 6:9 NLT)A farmer understands that he must sow to reap. There are things beyond his control such as the weather and other things. But he must do his part and can celebrate that he did his part until the harvest, and then it will be a big celebration. However, it begins with sowing. Am I weary of doing good because I see no return from my work? Maybe it is because I need to have faith that it will come.  I did my part and God will do His part? Am I not willing to celebrate the harvest that He will bring even though I do see it now? If not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #34: For His Plans for MeFor I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11 ESV)God has a plan for all His children. Will I believe this for my life, or do I doubt that He is involved with my life. Do I think He either doesn't care, or He is too busy for me? If I think this, there is no scriptural basis to believe it. In fact, to believe this is contrary to what God's Word promises me. It is the belief of those who do not even know God. Will I believe Him and His promises to me only if I see proof of it? If I do this, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #35: For Being the Bride of ChristAs a young man marries a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. (Isaiah 62:5 NIV)Male or female, as a member of the Church, I am a “bride” of Christ. As a “Bride of Christ,” He promises to rejoice over me. I may not understand how this relates to me. But I understand what it means to rejoice over something or someone. Do I rejoice about my relationship with Jesus? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #36:  For Jesus' Return“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:3 NIV)Do I look forward to Christ's return to claim me? If I did, would it will help me to not take this life as serious as I do? Maybe most of my conflicts come because I put too much importance on this temporary life? Do I put more importance on this life than the one Jesus has prepared for me? If so, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #37: For My Heavenly Home“ My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2 NIV)What kind of house or setting can I secure for myself in this life that would ever match what Christ has been building for me the last two thousand years? Do I thank Him for the work He is doing even now to prepare for my arrival? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #38: For Making the WAY Known to Me“You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:4 NIV)Before she received her name, the Church was known as “The Way.” Jesus made it clear that He is The Way. He is the way to God. He is the only way to God. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Do I thank Him for helping me know that He is the Way? If not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #39: For the HOLY SPIRITAnd I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17 ESV)I have received a tremendous gift because I trusted Jesus with my soul. This Gift is God's Spirit who lives within me. Do I fail to recognize Him? Do I fail to thank Him? Do I fail to listen to His still, small voice? If I do not, am I also one who does not come back to thank Him?REASON #40: For My National Leaders and Country“Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” (1 Timothy 2:2 NLT)There is a great benefit for praying for our nation's leaders, whether I support their party, their positions, or even dislike them. I have no greater reason than the instruction scripture gives to me to do so. I might be asked to pray for godless, angry people who detest my prayerful concern for them. I might be asked to pray for leaders who are fervent about their disbelief of God and who feel my prayers are a product of ignorance and superstition. Though they see themselves as enlightened intellectuals, the truth is they are ignorant of God and His love. They need my prayers above all, for their souls need Him, and my country needs them. All my national leaders need to help create peace within our boundaries by joining hands with each other and work for a common cause. Our country and its leaders need my prayers. Have I thanked God for my country and our leaders and have I been sincerely interested in asking God to bless all of them?  If I have not, am I also one who does not return to thank Him?THANK YOU…For joining us in prayer these past 40 days, offering our Lord the thanks that He is due.  With your grateful spirit, may you enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday and may you let your thankfulness pour out on your family and friends and other spheres of influence.

What is Life? For centuries, the greatest minds in science, philosophy and theology have endeavored to answer that most unanswerable of questions. We’ve grappled with its meaning, questioned its purpose and cursed its inevitable end. While the experience is universal, it’s the ineffable nature of it has baffled us all. A satisfying answer, it seemed, was never to be. But then, in 1999, like a bolt of lightning, an answer came: Life is a prison-set comedy with dramatic overtones starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Chuck Hayward (Step Sisters, Dear White People) joins Phil and Kenny to discuss this most momentous of discoveries.

JB White read by Classic Poetry Aloud: http://www.classicpoetryaloud.com/ Giving voice to the poetry of the past. --------------------------------------------- To Night by Joseph Blanco White (1775 – 1841) Mysterious Night! when our first parent knew Thee from report divine, and heard thy name, Did he not tremble for this lovely frame, This glorious canopy of light and blue? Yet 'neath a curtain of translucent dew, Bathed in the rays of the great setting flame, Hesperus with the host of heaven came, And lo! Creation widened in man's view. Who could have thought such darkness lay concealed Within thy beams, O Sun! or who could find, Whilst fly and leaf and insect stood revealed, That to such countless orbs thou mad'st us blind! Why do we then shun death with anxious strife? If Light can thus deceive, wherefore not Life? For hundreds more poetry readings, visit the Classic Poetry Aloud index.
