Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
Care of a Former Analysand with Dementia with Maxine Anderson, MD (Seattle, Washington)

“I think that my analytic awareness of denial and projection and the concreteness of psychic reality when executive function wanes, that I could help the other caretakers to understand some of what was going on - to give them a way to understand that relieves their sense of frustration and uncertainty. I think that the analytic awareness of denial, of projection, that these things are not generally recognized by many caretakers, but it does reorient and make the caretaking function much more tolerable. It expands the understanding of what goes on in the waning personality. I also think that analytic work fosters the capacity to tolerate ambiguity, uncertainty, pain and frustration and in that way may allow us, the analytic mind, to tolerate some of the intense affect - as sort of the phrase I love from an Italian analyst, as “writings waiting to be completed” - by the analytic mind. We can hold and metabolize the difficulty and offer that kind of function rather than unpleasantness just to be rid of. These are some of the things that I felt are useful as a psychoanalyst.” Episode Description: We begin with describing how dementia is a cloud over our field both for individuals and for institutes. Maxine then introduces us to 'Sally' who was her analysand 40 years prior to recontacting her to care for her cognitive decline. Maxine mentions that just hearing her former patient's voice instantly brought alive her past experiences with her. We discuss how she approached the issue of caring for her and her neurological condition. We consider the at times overlap between psychogenic and organic symptoms and she shares with us her countertransference experiences of herself losing her memory. Maxine also shares her approach to answering Sally's questions about the possibility of recovering. We close with her describing how she feels that being an analyst aided her care of Sally and what she learned from that experience that she brought to her other patients -"to face the pain of difficult truths."   Our Guest: Maxine Anderson, MD, is a training and supervising analyst at the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society. Originally trained in psychiatry, she pursued psychoanalytic training in Seattle in the early 1970s and then pursued post-graduate work at the British Psychoanalytical Society for 8 years, returning to Seattle in 1992.  Thereafter, she became a Founding Member of the Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Maxine has published several articles, and chapters and 3 books, the most recent being The Hardest Passage: a psychoanalyst accompanies her patient's journey into dementia (Karnac, 2025). Feeling herself now to be an Elder in life and in her field, Maxine hopes to continue to think and write about this phase of personal and professional life.   Recommended Readings: Balfour, A. In this episode, Dr. Petah M. Gibbs returns to unpack the thinking behind the supplementary set of images in the Athletic Apperception Technique (AAT). We explore why selecting specific cards can risk shaping the narrative, the importance of using the full set, and how grief, arousal, and self-diagnosis often surface in unexpected ways. Petah also shares insights on balancing emotional intensity across cards and what happens when elite athletes mislabel performance arousal as anxiety. Also, an evocative story from Paul's early career involving a response to a projective image helped us delve into how such techniques allow access to unconscious material, often unfiltered and deeply personal. Dr. Gibbs highlights the significance of silence in therapeutic work—how it invites genuine reflection and unprompted free association, echoing the principles of classic psychoanalysis. We also touch on the nuanced themes that may emerge in such assessments, including identity, sexuality, and interpersonal dynamics, illustrating that responses often transcend any fixed domain, including sport.A thoughtful, rich continuation for anyone using or curious about the AAT.Also, If you are interested in Dr. Gibbs original research study, you can find it here: Gibbs, P. For example, psychodynamic formulations and interpretations have begun to appear more frequently in the sport psychology literature. In keeping with emerging psychodynamic viewpoints, we believe the time is right to introduce a qualitative sport-specific projective instrument: the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT). The AAT represents a new technique based on psychodynamic theory and established projective test construction principles. It was designed primarily as a clinical tool for practitioners and not as an instrument for quantitative research into personality. It does, however, have potential research applications, especially in clinical sport case study research and narrative analysis investigations. The AAT produces an idiographic understanding of athletes' characteristics, anxieties, and motivations (both conscious and unconscious). We briefly review the literature on the development of projective techniques, explain the rationale underlying the development of the AAT, and present three sequential studies to explain the AAT image selection procedures that led to the final product.---Discover all Dr. Petah M. In this third episode with the Athlete Apperception Technique's author Dr. Petah M. Gibbs, we unpack the art of crafting projective images for the AAT, exploring how ambiguity opens a door to the athlete's internal world. From latent stimulus meaning to the powerful pull of interpersonal relationships, we unpack what makes a picture more than just a picture. Why focus on relationships before performance themes? What does it mean when an athlete doesn't mention anyone else at all? This episode looks at On the Waterfront, the celebrated 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg. The film stars Marlon Brando as the ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman Terry Malloy. Malloy struggles to stand up to mob-affiliated union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) after Malloy is lured into setting up a fellow dockworker whom Friendly has murdered to prevent him from testifying before the Waterfront Crime Commission about violence and corruption at the docks. The pressure on Malloy rises as he falls in love with Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the murdered dockworker's sister, and as Edie, along with local priest Father Pete Barry (Karl Malden), urge Malloy to do the right thing. Malloy ultimately testifies against Friendly and challenges Friendly's leadership at great personal risk. While the film is about a courageous fight against a corrupt power structure and injustice, it is also influenced by director Elia Kazan's own controversial decision to act as an informant against fellow directors, writers, and actors during the McCarthy-era Red Scare.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction2:20      Corruption on the docks9:18       Boxing: I could have been a contender17:07     The priest on the waterfront23:44    Testifying before waterfront crime commission32:10     Informants34:48    Elia Kazan and the House Un-American Activities Committee47:04    The film's relevance today48:39    Some people who stood up to HUAC50:40   Separating the art and the artistFurther reading:Demeri, Michelle J., “The ‘Watchdog' Agency: Fighting Organized Crime on the Waterfront in New York and New Jersey,” 38 New Eng. #219: Why and how to use The Athlete Apperception Technique - Dr. Petah M. Gibbs

In this episode, I reunite with Australian psychologist Dr. Petah Gibbs to delve deeper into the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT) — a powerful projective tool developed to foster meaningful dialogue with athletes beyond performance. Together, we explore the importance of the person-first perspective, the value of context and narrative, and how AAT can help practitioners work more effectively by uncovering the lived experiences athletes project onto storytelling. We reflect on the origins of the technique, the meaning of apperception, and the influence of past psychological research. Whether you're a sport psychologist, therapist, or simply curious about innovative methods in mental health and sport, this episode invites you to rethink how we understand, connect, and work with those who play sport for a living — as people first.Importantly, Petah emphasized the flexible nature of the test's administration. There are no rigid rules: it can be used in one-on-one settings, in written form, over Zoom, or asynchronously by having clients take home the images and respond at their own pace. Some practitioners prefer using only a subset of the 10 standard images, depending on client needs. Observational data such as body language, spontaneous utterances, or emotional reactions during story generation can also add interpretative depth. While some may argue for strict procedural controls, Petah maintains a client-centered stance: “You do you. Use it how you want to use it and get the best information you can possibly get.” This philosophy aligns with his belief that the complexity of working with human beings doesn't always lend itself to rigid administration protocols.Ultimately, the AAT is proposed not as a standalone diagnostic instrument, but as a complement to other tools—questionnaires, interviews, and behavioral observations—offering nuanced, context-rich insights into athletes' emotional worlds. It invites practitioners to listen, to reflect, and to integrate, supporting a more holistic understanding of the person behind the performance. Also, If you are interested in Dr. Gibbs original research study, you can find it here: Gibbs, P. Welcome back to Martial Attitude Voice, the podcast where we explore the intersections of discipline, psychology, and performance across a variety of domains. I'm Mathias Alberton, and today we're diving deep into the origins, development, and implications of a fascinating tool in applied sport psychology—the Athlete Apperception Technique, or AAT.This is a special episode, not just because of the subject matter, but because of our guest: Dr. Petah Gibbs.Dr. Gibbs is a sport psychologist based in Australia, with an impressive career that spans collaborations with top-tier athletes and organisations in both hemispheres—from the AFL in Australia to the NBA in the United States. But what brings us together today is not just his applied experience, but his deep academic and psychoanalytic insight. Dr. Gibbs is the author and developer of the Athlete Apperception Technique—a projective test designed specifically for athletes, rooted in psychodynamic theory and inspired by tools like the TAT and the Rorschach. We first heard about the AAT through his PhD supervisor, Professor Mark B. Andersen, who called it a bold and much-needed addition to the field. But as Petah reminds us in this conversation—behind every supervisor's suggestion, there's an author willing to take the leap.In this episode, we talk about how chance meetings, lucky mentorship, and a lifelong love for psychodynamic theory led Petah to take on a PhD that would require him to bridge the gap between century-old ideas and modern elite sport. We explore how projective techniques—so often dismissed for being "too old" or "not empirical enough"—can actually give us access to the deeper layers of athletes' inner lives. Petah speaks candidly about referencing 19th-century sources in his thesis, drawing comparisons between Freud and Newton, and reminding us that while our environments evolve rapidly, human nature doesn't change all that fast. This is a rich, thoughtful conversation about theory, practice, and the humanity of sport—and I can't wait for you to hear it.Let's jump in.Also, If you are interested in Dr. Gibbs original research study, you can find it here: Gibbs, P. Petah M. Michael Malloy—also known as Mike the Durable—is the closest thing history has to a real-life Rasputin. In 1930s New York, a group of small-time crooks hatched the dumbest insurance scam of all time: take out a life insurance policy on a local drunk and kill him for the payout. Simple, right? Except Malloy had the constitution of a cockroach. Poisoned drinks? He asked for another round. Antifreeze? Tasted just fine. Rotten oysters marinated in wood alcohol? Delicious. Even running him over with a taxi twice wasn't enough. In this episode of The Lesser Known People Podcast, we break down the hilariously stupid series of attempts to take Malloy out, the absurd perseverance of one very drunk man, and the ultimate downfall of the criminal "masterminds" behind the plot. If you love true crime, dark comedy, and stories so ridiculous they sound fake, this one's for you.

It is an honor and a privilege to introduce my next two guests, James Patterson and Tim Malloy. James Patterson is one of the most successful authors of all time, having sold over 425 million books. He is perhaps best known for his Alex Cross series, which has been adapted into films such as Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. In addition to his fiction, Patterson has collaborated on New York Times bestsellers with notable figures, including Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, and Viola Davis. Recently, he has ventured into nonfiction and co-authored Filthy Rich alongside Tim Malloy, which explores the life of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Tim Malloy is a seven-time Emmy Award winner and a veteran reporter with extensive experience in local and network television. He has worked as an investigative reporter, documentary filmmaker, and author. Malloy and Patterson are friends and neighbors in Palm Beach and have collaborated on various projects, including a documentary that highlights underserved communities in Florida. They both appeared in the Netflix documentary based on their bestselling book, Filthy Rich. Their latest collaboration, American Heroes, pays tribute to some of the greatest heroes in the United States Armed Forces. American Heroes emphasizes the courage, bravery, character, and patriotism of recipients of the three most significant military awards: The Medal of Honor, The Silver Star, and the Distinguished Service Cross. In this episode, Patterson, Malloy, and I discuss their incredible book American Heroes, their past collaborations on Filthy Rich, how they began their careers, and why these inspirational stories about real American heroes are vital for us to hear.Patterson and Malloy are not only brilliant but also hilarious. It was a joy and privilege to sit down with them both. I am very excited for you to listen!

As the morning shift starts, Reed wonders if he can afford to buy a house. Malloy cannot contemplate why he would stop being a renter. Their first call of the day takes them to an apartment building with a unique living situation for three of its tenants. They also aid a cabbie who has been robbed and a busload of Mexicans looking to honor "El Presidente." But when a disgruntled homeowner starts firing at kids, the pair get the riot gun ready. Justin discovers, to his dismay, that he watched the right episode of Adam-12. A look at episode writer Robert H. Forward's IMDb page leads to a discussion of John Landis, fraternities, and a commitment to watch a certain show in 2025. Griffin Dunne gets some praise. Justin makes a determination about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. They also discuss the later 2D Disney movies, a properly cast version of The Black Dahlia, and the last great episode of The Simpsons. They also, eventually, discuss Adam-12 as its format and stars get examined. Jack Webb's worldview comes into the discussion and gun safety turns out to be very important.

This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Welcome back to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight, where we tackle the technical challenges and innovations in wind energy. I'm your host, Allen Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxum. We're excited to welcome back one of our most popular guests, Cory Mittleider from Malloy Wind. In his previous appearance, Cory shared his expertise on main bearing failures. And many of you reached out asking for a deep dive into gearbox bearings. Today, Cory returns to do exactly that. As Malloy's business unit manager, he and his team have diagnosed and solved countless gearbox bearing issues across different turbine platforms. Having spent over 15 years in power transmission, Cory has become a specialist in understanding why these critical components fail and, more importantly, how to prevent those failures through better bearing selection and maintenance practices. Cory, welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight. Thanks for having me again. All right, so we've got a lot of requests to hear about gearbox, bearing, and what the issues are with those bearings. Gearboxes is something I know a little bit about. But you're the expert. I hear a lot of complaining from the field. What is happening to gearbox bearings at the minute? Cory Mittleider: Sure. Gearbox bearings has been an interesting one for me. So when I started in wind in 2011, it was generator bearings and gearbox bearings is where I started learning about this stuff. A lot of the generator stuff was electrical fluting damage. That's pretty well figured out how to avoid that. The gearbox one was a little more complex than that. And I don't know if you've heard of. NREL's Drivetrain Reliability Conference that's happened for the last 12 plus years now. That's a recurring topic for the last every single year, right? Is gearbox bearing failures. A lot of the conversation that started back in the day and is still going on is around what they call white etching cracking or white etching failures. And back, in say, 11 and 12, A lot of the conversation was around was around that. It was around, the oils in the gearboxes. It was around coatings and bearing types and how they could affect the bearing itself to improve the life. And, specifically when it comes to gearbox bearings That was really hard back in the, the service providers and the operators themselves weren't used to having to replace gearbox bearings. They maybe weren't even planning on having to replace gearbox bearings, right? But they started to see these problems. They started to get their head around the scope and how to identify them early and started to dig into it.

From making music in caves to documenting indigenous stories on 16mm film to live scoring films, Matt delves into the art of creating immersive experiences, before answering Instagram questions and the infamous Lightning Round.
