I have to tell you about this one. James Patterson — who has sold more than 420 million books — and his longtime friend and collaborator Tim Malloy, a seven-time Emmy winner and veteran journalist, came on to talk about their book American Heroes, which chronicles the recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Service Cross. The stories in this book are almost impossible to put into words: acts of courage so far beyond what most of us will ever be asked to do that you find yourself reading on a plane and suddenly trying to hide the fact that you're crying. We also got into their earlier collaboration on Filthy Rich — the Epstein book they wrote before almost anyone else was paying attention — and the documentary that came out of it. With Memorial Day this week, I wanted to bring this conversation back because I think these are exactly the stories we should all be sitting with right now.00:00:00 Introduction — James Patterson and Tim Malloy00:01:20 How Patterson Got Started as a Writer00:03:41 First Novel, the Vietnam Lottery, and Leaving His PhD Program00:06:01 How Patterson and Malloy Met — The Epstein Story Begins00:08:16 How the Epstein Story Finally Broke — The Plea Deal and the Press00:10:34 Walk in My Combat Boots and Matt Eversman00:12:58 How American Heroes Came Together00:13:58 Woody Williams at Iwo Jima — A Medal of Honor Story00:15:15 Duty, Sacrifice, and Why This Book Should Be in Schools00:17:40 Woody's Grandson, Gold Star Monuments, and Veteran Support00:19:53 The Sergeant and the Napkins — Veteran Transition00:22:14 Finding and Interviewing Medal of Honor Recipients00:26:49 Cozy Earth Ad00:45:34 Alex Cross — Origin Story and the Prime Video Series00:47:43 On Screenwriting, Hollywood, and the Alex Cross Origin Story00:50:04 Patterson's Creative Process and What's Next for Tim Malloy00:52:27 OutroHosted on Ausha. On this sponsored episode of Power House, Zeb Lowe sits down with Carter Malloy to discuss why better land data may be one of the most important and overlooked pieces of solving the housing supply crisis. Malloy explains how his experience in land investing exposed a major industry problem: builders, developers, and investors were still making massive decisions using fragmented systems, outdated information, and hyper-local knowledge. That challenge eventually led to the creation of Acres, a platform designed to bring transparency, speed, and intelligence to land acquisition and development. The conversation explores how better visibility into zoning, infrastructure, ownership, and growth patterns can help bring housing to market more efficiently. Malloy also breaks down the difference between AI hype and AI that actually creates operational value, arguing that the real opportunity lies in combining high-quality geospatial data with intelligent systems capable of analyzing land-use variables at scale. When Pat Malloy was in about 6th grade, his mother noticed that the same genetic affliction that had struck his father had been passed down to him, and so when he was 15, she took a microcassette recorder into the local Department of Motor Vehicles, was walked through the eye test by the technician, and delivered the recorded cassette to Pat for memorization. Pat lived as a sighted person for nearly the next decade, despite not being able to read a Stop sign until he's already parked at it - and even then, not really - they're just - familiar. In his early 20's, Pat drifted into alcohol, and was fired from his job at his parents auto rental business - and spiraled.  When he was in his mid-20's, he was trying to get back on the right track, having gone through recovery and AA, and was 6 months into his now 30+ year sobriety, and had confessed his vision impairment.  On an after-Christmas trip, his parents were killed when a series of rogue waves off the Isle of Tortuga took out their scuba vessel - a heavy trawler - killing all but a lone survivor.  Against odds, the Franchisor for their auto rental business, and the executor trustee of the estate - allowed Pat to run the business.  Within 3 years, Pat was operating one of the top locations in the franchise network, was selected to speak at an annual conference, and was rolling in the back of a stretch mini-limo, and being shuttled around by rental car staff.   Becoming part of the “in” crowd had its perks - and its dangers.  A local ophthalmologist helped Pat get a medical waiver and get his driver's license back! - and he sold the rental business, moved around the country and traveled, started and closed or sold other businesses, got married, and lived again as a sighted person for a decade.  Eventually, Pat got divorced and moved to Eaton from the Lyons area, and nothing felt safe or familiar - and sacrificed his driving privileges again in 2012.   This is a wild one, with lots of moral ambiguity, inspirational entrepreneurship, and an almost-constant investigation of purpose and overcoming.  Pat's got a lot of talent in business and construction, and has time on his hands - so if you hear this conversation and have a new side-quest for Pat Malloy - and can provide transportation! - email him at pat.malloy@gmail.com Thanks for listening to The LoCo Experience podcast - if this episode inspires you in any way, please share it with a friend you think will enjoy it.

Host Dr Russell Thackeray interviews Todd Malloy in Huntersville, North Carolina, about his journey from a marginalised upbringing to nearly 30 years as a mechanical engineer and then to becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist and sexuality educator, and former pastor. Malloy describes how his corporate experience (including product design and managing P&Ls) helps him support C-suite clients by blending business realities with psychological safety and coaching. He argues therapy is part of the solution to a culture of “suffering in silence,” discusses triggers and “neural hijacking” (using Will Smith's Oscars incident as an example), and emphasises evidence-based approaches and using emotions as data. He also explores redefining manhood to fit modern realities and promotes tools on ToddMalloy.com, including discussion cards for those who can't afford therapy.00:00 Welcome and Introductions00:36 Todd's Origin Story02:24 From Engineer to Therapist05:57 Why Therapy Matters07:55 Culture and Emotional Expression10:03 Stress, Health, and Evidence12:30 Engineering Mindset in Therapy16:10 Modern Manhood Redefined18:29 Letting Go of Old Scripts19:31 Politics, Resources, and Wrap UpYou can contact us at info@qedod.comResources can be found online or link to our website https://resilienceunravelled.com

At age 78, while still doing mentoring, clinical work, and scholarship, Michael Malloy, MD, found time to discuss his journey with contemplating an “intensely personal” decision with the Faculty Factory Podcast this week. In what can only be described as the ultimate pre-retirement conversation, Dr. Malloy brings the emotions, intangibles, and ethical considerations, when weighing a decision of this magnitude. "I've been on a glidepath to retirement for about the last 5 or 6 years," Dr. Malloy said. With UTMB in Galveston, Texas, Dr. Malloy serves as Professor in the Division of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics and is the Emeritus John P. McGovern Chair of Oslerian Medicine. He decided to step aside from the rigors and intensity of the NICU roughly six years ago and continues to work as an attending physician in the mother-baby service in the hospital. As mentioned in this interview, Dr. Malloy has enjoyed the transition while still maintaining close contact with the NICU. As a self-described "hanger-on'er," Dr. Malloy discusses how he got to this point, his future plans, and gives us a candid look into his decision-making process that has been influenced by many factors including the loss of a loved one. This conversation is a “must-listen” for any faculty member kicking around the idea of stepping down from 100% full-time employment.

Super Rugby Pacific's decision to stage three rather than five competition matches over Easter has been justified by the powers-that-be. Chair Kevin Malloy has defended the move, despite the AFL, NRL and A-League hosting a full slate of fixtures. Malloy told Mike Hosking the fact that clubs have struggled to get crowds, which is a big part of their revenue, is a big element, and with 11 teams in the draw, they'd either have one weekend with three games or two weekends with four, so strategically it made sense to give teams a break over the weekend. Also, he says, six grounds were also unavailable, and two teams didn't want to play due to religious reasons. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Writing isn't just about getting words on the page, it's about finding a way to express what your day-to-day self can't always say out loud.” — Caroline MalloyThis episode asks you the question, do you really want to write a book? I'm joined by Caroline Malloy, a Chicago-based book coach, editor, and historian. Together, we explore what it takes to move from idea to manuscript and why not every idea needs to become a book. Caroline explains why trying to write for “everyone” dilutes your message and how staying deeply rooted in one specific reader makes your work more powerful and widely relatable. She also unpacks a causal, page-turning narrative that keeps readers engaged. If you feel stuck in your writing or creative work, Caroline offers practical wisdom: Sometimes the most productive thing to do is walk away. You can also shift your focus and work on different parts of a project to maintain joy and creative flow.Whether you're writing a book or deepening your creative practice this episode will remind you that creativity thrives when it's supported by the right people, those who help you shape your ideas, stay accountable, and bring them to fruition.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform while you cook, clean, or create. “Iron Mike” Malloy survived not one, not two, but more than nine attempts on his life before he finally met his end. Malloy became the target of a group of acquaintances later dubbed the “Murder Trust,” who conspired to kill him for insurance money. What followed remains one of the most astonishing strings of failed murder attempts in history. The conspirators served him cocktails laced with poison, swapped in antifreeze, turpentine, and even rat poison—none of which seemed to affect him at all. When that failed, they tried abandoning him in a snowbank to freeze, and later even staged a taxi hit-and-run. Each time, Malloy recovered, defying their plans and cementing his status as a near-mythic figure in true-crime lore. Writer Riley Knight has chronicled the story of Mike Malloy along with some of history’s other strangest deaths. Some true crime, others simply unbelievable. You can read his book, History's Strangest Deaths, here and listen to his podcast, Half-Arsed History, here. SURVEY Want to win a $1,000 gift card in just 3 minutes?
