Welcome back to Martial Attitude Voice, the podcast where we explore the intersections of discipline, psychology, and performance across a variety of domains. I'm Mathias Alberton, and today we're diving deep into the origins, development, and implications of a fascinating tool in applied sport psychology—the Athlete Apperception Technique, or AAT.This is a special episode, not just because of the subject matter, but because of our guest: Dr. Petah Gibbs.Dr. Gibbs is a sport psychologist based in Australia, with an impressive career that spans collaborations with top-tier athletes and organisations in both hemispheres—from the AFL in Australia to the NBA in the United States. But what brings us together today is not just his applied experience, but his deep academic and psychoanalytic insight. Dr. Gibbs is the author and developer of the Athlete Apperception Technique—a projective test designed specifically for athletes, rooted in psychodynamic theory and inspired by tools like the TAT and the Rorschach. We first heard about the AAT through his PhD supervisor, Professor Mark B. Andersen, who called it a bold and much-needed addition to the field. But as Petah reminds us in this conversation—behind every supervisor's suggestion, there's an author willing to take the leap.In this episode, we talk about how chance meetings, lucky mentorship, and a lifelong love for psychodynamic theory led Petah to take on a PhD that would require him to bridge the gap between century-old ideas and modern elite sport. We explore how projective techniques—so often dismissed for being "too old" or "not empirical enough"—can actually give us access to the deeper layers of athletes' inner lives. Petah speaks candidly about referencing 19th-century sources in his thesis, drawing comparisons between Freud and Newton, and reminding us that while our environments evolve rapidly, human nature doesn't change all that fast. This is a rich, thoughtful conversation about theory, practice, and the humanity of sport—and I can't wait for you to hear it.Let's jump in.Also, If you are interested in Dr. Gibbs original research study, you can find it here: Gibbs, P. M., Marchant, D. B., & Andersen, M. B. (2016). Development of a clinical sport projective assessment method: The Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT). Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health, 9(1), 33–48. https://doi.org/10.1080/2159676x.2016.1180637AbstractWithin the field of applied sport psychology, there is an increasing appreciation for diversity of training models, research methodologies, and therapeutic approaches. For example, psychodynamic formulations and interpretations have begun to appear more frequently in the sport psychology literature. In keeping with emerging psychodynamic viewpoints, we believe the time is right to introduce a qualitative sport-specific projective instrument: the Athlete Apperception Technique (AAT). The AAT represents a new technique based on psychodynamic theory and established projective test construction principles. It was designed primarily as a clinical tool for practitioners and not as an instrument for quantitative research into personality. It does, however, have potential research applications, especially in clinical sport case study research and narrative analysis investigations. The AAT produces an idiographic understanding of athletes' characteristics, anxieties, and motivations (both conscious and unconscious). We briefly review the literature on the development of projective techniques, explain the rationale underlying the development of the AAT, and present three sequential studies to explain the AAT image selection procedures that led to the final product.---Discover all Dr. Petah M. Michael Malloy—also known as Mike the Durable—is the closest thing history has to a real-life Rasputin. In 1930s New York, a group of small-time crooks hatched the dumbest insurance scam of all time: take out a life insurance policy on a local drunk and kill him for the payout. Simple, right? Except Malloy had the constitution of a cockroach. Poisoned drinks? He asked for another round. Antifreeze? Tasted just fine. Rotten oysters marinated in wood alcohol? Delicious. Even running him over with a taxi twice wasn't enough. In this episode of The Lesser Known People Podcast, we break down the hilariously stupid series of attempts to take Malloy out, the absurd perseverance of one very drunk man, and the ultimate downfall of the criminal "masterminds" behind the plot. If you love true crime, dark comedy, and stories so ridiculous they sound fake, this one's for you.

Tread Perilously starts the new year with the Winter Patreon request month. First up: an episode of the cop drama Adam 12 called "Log 72: El Presidente." As the morning shift starts, Reed wonders if he can afford to buy a house. Malloy cannot contemplate why he would stop being a renter. Their first call of the day takes them to an apartment building with a unique living situation for three of its tenants. They also aid a cabbie who has been robbed and a busload of Mexicans looking to honor "El Presidente." But when a disgruntled homeowner starts firing at kids, the pair get the riot gun ready. Justin discovers, to his dismay, that he watched the right episode of Adam-12. A look at episode writer Robert H. Forward's IMDb page leads to a discussion of John Landis, fraternities, and a commitment to watch a certain show in 2025. Griffin Dunne gets some praise. Justin makes a determination about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. They also discuss the later 2D Disney movies, a properly cast version of The Black Dahlia, and the last great episode of The Simpsons. They also, eventually, discuss Adam-12 as its format and stars get examined. Jack Webb's worldview comes into the discussion and gun safety turns out to be very important.

This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Welcome back to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight, where we tackle the technical challenges and innovations in wind energy. I'm your host, Allen Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxum. We're excited to welcome back one of our most popular guests, Cory Mittleider from Malloy Wind. In his previous appearance, Cory shared his expertise on main bearing failures. And many of you reached out asking for a deep dive into gearbox bearings. Today, Cory returns to do exactly that. As Malloy's business unit manager, he and his team have diagnosed and solved countless gearbox bearing issues across different turbine platforms. Having spent over 15 years in power transmission, Cory has become a specialist in understanding why these critical components fail and, more importantly, how to prevent those failures through better bearing selection and maintenance practices. Cory, welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight. Thanks for having me again. All right, so we've got a lot of requests to hear about gearbox, bearing, and what the issues are with those bearings. Gearboxes is something I know a little bit about. But you're the expert. I hear a lot of complaining from the field. What is happening to gearbox bearings at the minute? Cory Mittleider: Sure. Gearbox bearings has been an interesting one for me. So when I started in wind in 2011, it was generator bearings and gearbox bearings is where I started learning about this stuff. A lot of the generator stuff was electrical fluting damage. That's pretty well figured out how to avoid that. The gearbox one was a little more complex than that. And I don't know if you've heard of. NREL's Drivetrain Reliability Conference that's happened for the last 12 plus years now. That's a recurring topic for the last every single year, right? Is gearbox bearing failures. A lot of the conversation that started back in the day and is still going on is around what they call white etching cracking or white etching failures. And back, in say, 11 and 12, A lot of the conversation was around was around that. It was around, the oils in the gearboxes. It was around coatings and bearing types and how they could affect the bearing itself to improve the life. And, specifically when it comes to gearbox bearings That was really hard back in the, the service providers and the operators themselves weren't used to having to replace gearbox bearings. They maybe weren't even planning on having to replace gearbox bearings, right? But they started to see these problems. They started to get their head around the scope and how to identify them early and started to dig into it.

Allen Hall: This is the progress powering tomorrow. I'm your host, Allen Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we're tackling a critical issue that's affecting wind farm operators across the industry, main bearing failures and the evolving solutions to combat them. Joining us is Cory Mittleider business unit manager at Malloy Wind, who brings over 15 years of hands on experience in power transmission and bearing technology. Cory has built his career at Malloy Electric where he's become their go to expert for complex bearing challenges. His journey from technical sales support engineer to wind business unit manager has given him a unique perspective on the evolution of bearing technology and the real world challenges faced by wind farm operators. Malloy Wind, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been at the forefront of developing solutions for wind turbine bearing issues, particularly focusing on advanced materials. and designs to combat common failure modes like peeling damage and premature wear. Cory, welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast Spotlight. Thanks for having me. You are our go to guy for Anything bearing related. And as Joel and I travel around the United States this summer, we ran into a lot of people with bearing issues and now main bearing issues. And we've seen quite a bit in the press this summer about main bearings and coatings on main bearings and what is the right kind of main bearing to use and a lot of operators looking at different solutions at the minute, and we figured. Cory will know. So let's just ask Cory what his thoughts were on main bearings and try to get a sense of what can be done. Cory Mittleider: Yeah. We've definitely spent a lot of time looking into main bearings, main bearing failures. Joel Saxum: So let's dive into this, Cory, then what is the. Just for our users or users, for our listeners can you give us the rundown basically of what the main bearing is, where it sits in the turbine and what it does? Cory Mittleider: On the wind turbine drivetrain, you've got the blades and the rotor hanging out front, and then ultimately that's connected to a shaft. Which then connects it to the gearbox and the generator. And on that shaft, that's what we'll call the main shaft. On that shaft, there is a really big pillow block. And it's got the main bearing inside. So we'll call it the main bearing, the main shaft bearing, a couple of different nomenclatures there. But that's what helps support that load of this very heavy drive train, but also connect it and allow the rotation to generate the power from the turbine. Some turbines do have two. main bearings on this main shaft.

In 1991, Randy Malloy started as an unpaid college intern at WWCD-FM in Columbus, an independent, alternative rock radio station cut from the same cloth as 97X. He held a variety of positions at the station, including promotions director, marketing director, and operations director, before buying the station in 2011. Together with a dedicated band of staffers, they kept the independent/alternative flame alive for 33 years as the station moved around the radio dial from 101.1 ("CD101") to 102.5 to 92.9 before eventually signing off on February 1st of this year. We talked to Randy about the"Ran-sanity" of his radio career, how WWCD looked up to 97X, how they programmed the music to let the listeners "pass through them" and why being part of the community was so important to them.
