Have you seen the new 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and wondered if you should follow them? You may have seen talk about them on the news and social media, and don't know quite what to believe. The slogan of eating more ‘real foods' sounds good though, and the New Pyramid diagram seems to show that all foods - including butter, steak, whole milk and cheese – would be fine to eat and that we don't really need to worry about the amounts eaten. But DO we need to worry? And what about the recommendations about protein and nutritional adequacy issues in vegan and vegetarian diets? Let's talk about this. In this episode, we'll take a deeper dive into the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and look at 3 more KEY things you need to know about them, to inform your own health. We'll touch on protein, what the Guidelines say about vegan and vegetarian diets, and what has been found through research. Listen in! Forceful abdominal exhalations activate a brainstem circuit that tightens blood vessels and raises blood pressure, even in the absence of stress or exercise Slow, calm breathing quiets the nervous system signals that drive blood pressure higher, making it a powerful daily tool for regulation Long-term high blood pressure reduces blood flow to your brain and shrinks regions responsible for memory, focus, and decision-making Blood pressure control depends on cumulative daily habits, not single readings, which explains why short-term fixes often fail Practicing nasal, slow, and passive breathing once or twice daily helps lower blood pressure by calming the systems that control it at the source

On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken begin with a medical success story with a new cancer vaccine, the importance of a strong immune system, and how we are inadvertently aging ourselves faster. Next, Doug and Dr. Ken address an increase in life expectancy, a study showing night owls have a higher risk of heart disease than early birds, and the state of public health (specifically where we're at with measles outbreaks. Moving on, Dr. Ken breaks down how weight-loss drugs are being shown to have a positive effect on heart-health when helping with weight loss. Continuing on with the discussion on heart-health and optimal cardiovascular awareness, Doug and Dr. Ken discuss what the numbers of blood pressure mean and why spikes happen at various times. Then, Doug and Dr. Ken address listener questions with a strong focus on the MIT Smart Pill, a biodegradable antenna that transmits a wireless signal from the stomach to confirm medication has been swallowed. Designed to improve adherence for high-risk patients, the pill uses zinc and cellulose materials to safely dissolve within a week, leaving only a tiny, non-biodegradable RFID chip that is naturally excreted. Send a textDr. Michael Koren joins Kevin Geddings to talk about what the Super Bowl can teach us about medicine. The doctor discusses on how players get two weeks off to prepare (and heal) for the Super Bowl. He then relates this to a growing trend in investigational medicine where pharmaceutical companies are searching for longer-term medications for blood pressure and other conditions that only need to be taken once a month or less. The hope is that this "time off" from taking medicines will allow for better outcomes. Dr. Koren describes a specific investigational study looking at a potential monthly blood pressure medication and explains that the relaxed schedule may take the pressure off patients who take these medications.Be a part of advancing science by participating in clinical research.Have a question for Dr. Koren? High blood pressure remains a significant health concern. Nearly half of U.S. adults – 46.7% -- have hypertension. In Kansas, the number of adults diagnosed with high blood pressure is 34.7%. This troubling health trend prompted Kansas State University and K-State Extension to develop and offer a free program to help residents better understand and manage their blood pressure. The program, Hypertension Awareness and Prevention, has turned into a multi-part community health effort. The coordinator of the program, Stephanie Gutierrez, says home monitoring plays a key role in the success of the program. Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more. Send comments, questions or requests for copies of past programs to ksrenews@ksu.edu. K‑State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well‑being of Kansans. Supported by county, state, federal and private funds, the program has county Extension offices, experiment fields, area Extension offices and regional research centers statewide. Its headquarters is on the K‑State campus in Manhattan.

Regular energy drink use pushes your heart and blood vessels into a constant stress state that medications and fitness can't override while stimulants remain in your system Severe blood pressure spikes and dangerous heart rhythm events have occurred in people drinking energy drinks who appeared healthy and had no prior heart disease Energy drinks stack caffeine with other stimulants and added sugar, creating a combined strain that overwhelms normal cardiovascular control mechanisms Low cellular energy drives the urge to rely on stimulants, but energy drinks mask the problem rather than restoring real energy production Removing energy drinks and rebuilding cellular energy through food, movement, and daily structure helps your heart regain stability and lowers real cardiovascular risk

High blood pressure isn’t a disease—it’s a signal. In this episode of The Ask Dr. Ernst Show, Dr. Ernst explains why the 120/80 standard is misleading, why blood pressure rises in response to internal stress and resistance, and shares the four most effective ways to lower blood pressure at home naturally. You’ll learn how fasting rapidly reduces pressure, how nitric oxide restores healthy blood vessel function, why magnesium is essential for vascular relaxation, and how kidney stress silently drives hypertension—all from a root-cause, functional perspective designed to restore true heart health.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, Chris responds to a listener's thoughtful question: “Do we really need to check blood pressure on every adult patient?” What starts as a question about workflow becomes a much bigger conversation about how optometrists spend their time, what really changes patient outcomes, and how to break the habit of checking boxes just for compliance. We unpack: The clinical and administrative context behind routine BP checks Why MIPS might not apply to your practice—and what that means The opportunity cost of low-yield testing How to rethink what “comprehensive” really means in your exam The case for reclaiming time to do more of what matters Bottom line: If it doesn't change how you care for the patient, maybe it doesn't belong in the exam.
This week, we conclude our 4-part series on the #1 killer by talking about how to prevent Cardiovascular Disease. In this episode, you'll find out:—Why Dr. Prather says that preventing Cardiovascular Disease should be a top priority of every office providing holistic care, being responsible for one-out-of-every-three deaths.—How proper diagnostics are the key to preventing Cardiovascular deaths. And why you should seek diagnostics from a Structure-Function Care perspective.—When you should start being screened for Cardiovascular Disease. And why Dr. Prather is finding that it is earlier than recommended.—How there was an 85% improvement in outcomes and 60% reduction in costs when Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMO did a trial that featured Structure-Function Care as the primary health care model. —Why Dr. Prather gets better patient results from External CounterPulsation (ECP) Therapy than what the ECP researchers are seeing.—The reason Dr. Prather says that the bodies of those who are triathletes and marathon runners are "a wreck". —Why Dr. Prather says how deep you breathe indicates how long you will live. And why some patients complain that Dr. Prather breathes too heavy! —How it is harder to pump blood through fat than through muscle. And how obesity impacts Cardiovascular Disease.—The greater importance of fat percentage, not just weight, when it comes to a healthy and sustainable weight loss. —The importance of inflammation as the true cause of Cardiovascular Disease, not Cholesterol, in Dr. Prather's view. Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses the renaming of fatty liver disease to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (M-A-S-L-D) to reduce stigma and improve diagnosis. Dr. Mary Ella's efforts at the University of Chicago Medicine highlight how this change aids in better patient identification and treatment. Leyla emphasizes lifestyle changes like a low-carb diet to manage and reverse the disease. The episode also covers the prevalence of fake extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on the market, ways to identify authentic olive oil, and the importance of choosing quality over mass-produced options.
In this solo episode, Dr. Mike breaks down everything you need to know about blood pressure, why it's so commonly misunderstood, how to measure it correctly, and what optimal numbers really look like. He explains why 120/80 isn't ideal for everyone, why blood pressure variability can be more dangerous than steady high readings, and how sleep, stress, and undiagnosed sleep apnea quietly drive hypertension. The episode walks through a clear, practical framework for managing blood pressure using lifestyle interventions first, followed by supplements, and medications only when necessary. Dr. Mike covers exercise, weight loss, sodium and potassium balance, magnesium, breathing techniques, sauna use, sleep optimization, and evidence-based supplements like olive leaf extract, beetroot, citrulline, and nattokinase. Get real, true hydration with Redmond Re-lyte! Try it for 15% off, here. What if the real problem isn't salt itself but the way we've stripped it, feared it, and deadened the water we drink it with? We're sitting down with Darryl Bosshardt, a salt expert from Redmond, Utah, who grew up inside his family's mineral business. We had a lot of fun recording this episode because he's as intensely nerdy about salt as we are about birth and motherhood. We question how salt ended up cast as the villain and what that fear has quietly done inside us, especially when studies and headlines ignored context like water and overall diet. We open up the tension between the mineral-rich salt and spring water humans adapted to and the stripped, “dead” versions most people are leaning on today. Instead of handing you another protocol, we stay focused on how it actually feels when you give your body enough of what it runs on and stop fighting its design. You'll Learn:[00:00:00] Introduction[00:06:09] How ancient civilizations survived and thrived around salt deposits[00:11:52] The clever way our ancestors found salt and water[00:17:17] The fascinating science of salt crystal size and why it changes how salty food tastes on your tongue[00:20:30] The biblical origins of "kosher salt" and why it's called that (it has nothing to do with being blessed)[00:26:31] The 1954 mouse study that demonized salt[00:32:17] The shocking truth: consuming less than 2,300mg of sodium resulted in a 430% increase in heart attacks[00:34:19] The Brewer's Diet approach to preventing preeclampsia with unrestricted salt, protein, and water[00:40:16] What "dead water" is and why spring water contains the full electrolyte profile our bodies expect[00:47:32] The bottle experiment that proves RO water is aggressively trying to dissolve everything it touches[00:52:30] Drinking demineralized water makes your body pull minerals from your jawbone and teeth[01:03:05] The heavy metals question: understanding parts per billion versus actual micrograms consumed[01:13:04] How to evaluate ANY product with three simple questions about producer, source, and processingResources Mentioned:Find A Spring | WebsiteWater & Salt, the Essence of Life by Barbara Hendel and Peter Ferreira | BookFDA Total Diet Study | ArticleFind more from Darryl Bosshardt by following him on LinkedIn.Find more from Dr. Leah:Dr. Leah Gordon | InstagramDr. Leah Gordon | WebsiteWomanhood Wellness | WebsiteFind more from Dr. Morgan:Dr. Morgan MacDermott | InstagramDr. Morgan MacDermott | WebsiteUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 15% at RedmondFor 20% off your first order at Needed, use code HEALTHYMOTHERSave $260 at Lumebox, use code HEALTHYASAMOTHER

Together, we explore hawthorn's rich folklore, its potent heart-centered gifts, and the magic woven into its thorns, blossoms, and berries. Drawing from her Celtic heritage, Ruthie shares how hawthorn is not just a medicine, but a living bridge to old-world traditions and ancestral ways of healing.Ruthie brought us her recipe for Anam Cara Heart Opening Cordial, a delightful blend of hawthorn and other rose-family plants.
